Steve, seeing as you are benchmarking just about everything this month, I also have a request for you. When the good RX5700 series models finally arrive, could you bench a few games with both the 9700K and the 3700X? There is some chatter around that Navi preforms better with a Ryzen CPU than an Intel. I am not sure which games might show a difference, if there is any. I guess BF5, but that game already preforms extremely good on Navi.
There is been that "chatter" since the first Zen launch. Reality is it doesnt really matter. The cpu will give you the performance its capable of. Doesnt matter if AMD or Nvidia card. There no "dark magic" between AMD CPU and GPU's that will give better performance.
No company makes their CPUs or GPUs run better with certain other components. It all depends on drivers and optimisation for both devices in games. AMD would just shoot themselves in the foot if they have worse performance with Intel CPUs when all review test benches use a 9900K.
@@leonro I don't think you understand the point being made...they don't"choose" to make performance less or more on a particular platform. They just have more control over "their" platforms which allows them to take advantage of their architecture better.
FYI, the retailer will most likely be getting rebates for Ryzen 1000 and 2000 parts in order to be able to still make a decent profit when selling them at the new discounted prices, that's why they're able to do something like this. AMD wouldn't be able to lower prices on stuff already in stock at various retailers if they didn't do this. It's a common practice (and usually the customer doesn't have to deal with doing the rebates themselves, though obviously sometimes they do, with those super annoying mail-in rebates).

I grabbed a 3600 and 16G DDR4 3200 ram for $170. It was really nice to find a really good deal since buying a GPU these days is like getting bent over. Ended up paying $350 for a 1080 Duke to get by for a few years. Not comfortable paying 2X MSRP for new gen. I'm pretty happy with what I got over all.
In Canada, the 3600X now comes with a choice of a free game (out of two choices), and it's also slightly reduced in price. The 3600 doesn't come with a free game, so, if you want one of these games, the 3600X is actually a good deal now, especially if you also want to use the stock cooler. I think it's probably the same in many other regions as well. The game choices are Borderlands 3 and some other big shooter title.

I have had no stability problems or heating issues with the stock cooler. Cpu 100% stress test keeps temps to mid 80s. Running on cheapo 3200mhz cl16 ram I ran a userbenchmark test and achieved a 99.4%! Which is almost 10% faster than a stock 3600x. I don't know if I got lucky or if this is normal but the benchmark showed 9700k performance. AMD for life.
Its already been done, they are very equal in gaming performance with SMT / HT off. Ryzen wins by 5-10fps in some games, and intel by 5-10 fps in others! But I wouldn't mind another channel doing that as well, the more info we get the better!
I got my Ryzen 3600x practically on release, I remember it ran hot, I bought a twin fan tower cooler, it did the trick, but as the years have gone by since, there have been some bios updates, my CPU now runs cool, only generating heat when underload, making it a much nicer quiet system, than when I first put it together.

@@vasilije94 The wraith stealth is a mediocre cooler as is the new wraith spire. For the same price as a 3600x, you could have a 3600 and a good air cooler. Given the benchmarks, I make the comparison with the intent of showing the value proposition of a 3600 with a good air cooler vs 3600x.
@@vasilije94 The stock cooler may not be that noisy, but you can get a better acoustic profile from an aftermarket cooler. Keep in mind that it can also potentially make a big difference in performance depending on how hot the case is, what the ambient temperature is, and what the workload is. Furthermore, a good CPU cooler can last for many different computer builds, and future upgrades are likely to benefit more from an aftermarket cooler, especially if they are higher TDP CPUs, which a 12 or 16 core cpu is likely to be. I'm using an old Noctua cooler which I've used with multiple previous CPUs, going back to when I was running Phenom 2's on an AM3 motherboard (Noctua sent me a free conversion kit so that my cooler would work with my AM4 board).
Thank you Steve...this was an extremely helpful 'buying decision' video! The performance comparisons under the different coolers made the point... but introducing the AIO tests made it especially clear. Makes one wonder what a similar comparison done for 3700X and 3800X would reveal!
Bro i dont understand you. You say that the 3600x and 3600 are basically the same at performance but at least in most benchmarks the 3600x sits right in the middle of the 3600 and the 3700x sometimes closer the 3700x sometimes to the (more often) 3600 isnt this where it should be considering the 3700x being another 100$ on top? (Btw in germany the 3600 is 170€, the 3600x 190€ and the 3700x 290€ atm so i think the 3600x is not a bad deal in that case.)
While the performance gains look big on a graph there is virtually no difference. A 20 euro difference is much better than a 50 dollar difference for a 4 - 6 percent performance bump it really isn't worth it. Just get a better cooler and auto OC the 3600, you'll get similar performance.
Thank you very much for this video. It puts me at ease a bit. I had already ordered a 3600 for my new build, but I was worried if I made the right choice or at least a good choice. (I have to wait for shipping from the US as I live internationally).

If you get the worst 3600x it certainly isn't worth it, just as if you did with a normal 3600.
+1
Well i got my self an 3600x being extremly Lucky though. I returned my 2600x and got me an 3600x without extra cost 😝 thats what i call a good deal
It's a common practice (and usually the customer doesn't have to deal with doing the rebates themselves, though obviously sometimes they do, with those super annoying mail-in rebates).
can you some test using air coolers? 30$, 50$, 70 $, 100 $ cooler? thanks great work dude.
I would also like to see that.

@@notoriousbig3k Not really, it would show when you get diminishing returns on air coolers so you can keep from pushing your budget very much.

Thank you!
My Windows 10's calculator tells me 3600 non-X model has better price/perfomance ratio
What about the win 3.1 calculator?
I grabbed a 3600 and 16G DDR4 3200 ram for $170. It was really nice to find a really good deal since buying a GPU these days is like getting bent over. Ended up paying $350 for a 1080 Duke to get by for a few years. Not comfortable paying 2X MSRP for new gen. I'm pretty happy with what I got over all.
A 3600 and 16GB DDR4 3200 ram, that's a great deal for $170. 👍
on amazon Prime day the 3600x was cheaper than the 3600, damn right i bought 1 !

Recently just ended up getting the X because the non X’s were all out of stock where i live (Canada,Manitoba) due to the low shipments from the covid. But at least the dude was nice enough to price match it down to the non X, really happy camper! 💪💪
So a 3600 + a 212 Black performs better than a 3600X for $25 less? Cool.
my setup lol
Ok so idk if I hit the silicon lottery or anything but I am running an r5 3600x overclocked to 4.4ghz on all cores using 1.35v to the CPU and 1.375v to the socket on my cheapo mini atx b450 ASRock motherboard.
Can you do Intel i9 9900k (HT Off) vs Ryzen 9 3900x (SMT Off)
Its already been done, they are very equal in gaming performance with SMT / HT off. Ryzen wins by 5-10fps in some games, and intel by 5-10 fps in others! But I wouldn't mind another channel doing that as well, the more info we get the better!
i want to see this too even if it's a stock to stock comparison
I want to see that one also
Gamers nexus allready sortof did it on his r9 3900x review. He compares smt on vs off against the 9700k on his graphs
A benchmark channel already did it, but the 9900k had smt on, while the 3900x had smt disabled. It still won by a consistent margin.
So 3600 with a dark rock 4/H5 ultimate or Noctua NH series. Not bad for around $250.
Why would you pay extra money for a different cooler if you are not going to gain anything from it? Like wtf? Whats the logic behind this thinking?
@@vasilije94 212 Cooler Master se ne cuje dok radi na 600/700 rpm-a a hladi odlicno dok novi wraith spire pravi buku kao avion kada se poveca temperatura, cak i kada radi na ispod 2000 rpm-a se cuje
@@vasilije94 The wraith stealth is a mediocre cooler as is the new wraith spire. For the same price as a 3600x, you could have a 3600 and a good air cooler. This would give a lot more thermal headroom for productivity tasks which neither stock cooler is realistically able to match.
Given the benchmarks, I make the comparison with the intent of showing the value proposition of a 3600 with a good air cooler vs 3600x.
@@vasilije94 but you do get something from it? Cooler CPU, potentially even higher clockspeed.
Dear Steve, please do a video about Ryzen 3000 and per CCX overclocking.
Thanks for including the 3700x scores. Now the question is the 8 core CPU worth the extra money over the 6 core.
With the 3600X and 3800X, is AMD charging us MORE or is actually charing us LESS with the Non-X versions?
The 3600 costs $50 less than the 3600x. Same with the 3800x. It costs more.
@@dylanneff8338 Think about this.
What is the "default" CPU in each tier, the non-x or the x version?
AMD first did the non-x and then added the x version for an extra or it first aimed for the x version and then added the non-x with the "lower quality chips" for the "peasants"?
What was in their mind, "we can ask more for this" or "let's make a cheaper version to make sure it'll sell"?
@@deathdoor There isn't a difference in capability between them. They just activate the X features on the X SKUs and put another cooler in the box for the 3600X or deactivate some cache for the 3700X. Binning isn't really used to differentiate between CPU kits. As long as they can reach advertised speeds, they're good to go.
Panino Manino the default is definitely the non x. But it’s because there’s no difference between the two chips if you know what you’re doing. On top of that, ryzen sees a very minuscule difference in games when overclocking. Not just ryzen 2 but even the 1st gen ryzen. It makes no sense to buy the x variant and people know that. They’re clocked very similar and will see about the same wall of 4.3 ghz. The cooler is better but that’s about it. Is it worth $50 for roughly the same temps? If you already have a aftermarket cooler, no. Get the non x.
@@dylanneff8338 Ryzen is configured to give the max that it can, so the x version is pointless because no matter how higher the base frequency, in the end both versions will work at practically the same frequencies.
It's a good thing, but claims for less skus.

not everyone can justify the price of a 3900x but want better performance in multi-threaded apps then what the 3600/x can offer.
also remember that one thing that no reviewer can benchmark is everyday usage. In order to keep things consistent it would be a somewhat fresh install without stuff like virus scanners and auto-updaters along with countless unknown garbage your relatives may have installed in order to get a free screensaver.
What i'm trying to say is, as an OS gets older and slower, more things running in the background... the more power you have in reserve, the better it will perform in these "less than ideal" situations, so 8 cores is the sweet spot for me while not being overkill for extra cash like the 12core is.
The justification is you get more cores so more future proof, and considerably better productivity performance, same for 3900x

There is something wrong with AGESA. AMD needs to fix it.
@John Doe yeah perhaps one of the reasons, I tried 3x shifting to performance mode but everytime I reboot it always goes back to AMD Balance .
Asus x470 itx and 3600x on balanced mode with nothing going idle voltage is below 1.0v and clocks are around 2.0. As soon as I open a program or game boosts voltage to 1.4 and clocks on all core go to 4.3-4.4. So balanced mode seems to work on that board. So basically your paying for a better cooler and maybe a tiny better bin that will not likely translate to better performance
Non of those is worth 50 bucks... And it`s definitely not better bin for X model... The X model is there just to accommodate price gap between 3600 and 3700X!!!! Same performance, same power consumption. My 3600 draws around 90w stock with PBO so 65w is just a marketing scam to justify smaller cooler..
@@theexorcist982 kind of my point
@@theexorcist982 >65W is just a marketing scam
But it's not. The 3700X is also a 65W TDP part, and it gets a Wraith Prism, and also is configured to pull up to 90W from the socket. The thing is, you're buying a cheap CPU. Therefore, you get a cheap cooler. Want a better CPU and cooler? Spend $130 more. Want a better cooler? Just spend like $40-80 more for a separate cooler and enjoy the cheap CPU.
If the 3600x and 3600 are the same processors, just that the X has better clock, then why such a higher TDP? why not in be in the middle like 75W?
Thank you for including wattage and cooling data. I was gonna buy the vanilla 3600 but then the 3600XT came back in stock for not that much more money, so I snatched that instead. However, I'm worried my cheapish motherboard (Gigabyte B550M S2H) and the supplied cooler (Wraith Spire) won't keep up with the 95W TDP. But I suppose it would be strange if the 30 extra watts were only to boost the base clock 200 MHz further.
I'm currently running a 1600 with an RTX 2060 GPU. After seeing just how much IPC gains and 3000 series has over first gen, it looks like a worthwhile upgrade for 200 bucks. I would buy either the 3600 or 3700X, since I do a bit of video and sound production from time to time, and some streaming while gaming. The 3700X would serve me a bit better, but the price jump is quite a bit more than I'd like to get an 8 core CPU.
Seems pretty clear there's no binning between these or the 3700x and 3800x. Some people will just buy based on the higher clock speed put on the box, but since AMD doesn't guarantee the boost clock, it doesn't mean anything.
So the best value proposition is to buy a discounted R7 2700X instead right?
This info is what I needed! Thank you!
Thanks for the great review. Been waiting for this one.
