Though Beethoven's Sonatas No. 30, No. 31 and No. 32 were promised to publisher Adolf Martin Schlesinger as a set, they would eventually be published separately in three successive years, beginning in 1821. The three works bear the hallmarks of Beethoven's late style: complex, tortured counterpoint, challenging harmonic relationships and prominence of variations forms. In the case of Op. 109, the scale of the closing variations movement is such that it dwarfs the first two movements combined. The sonata was dedicated to Maximiliane Brentano, daughter of Antonie Brentano, whom Maynard Solomon has proposed was Beethoven's "Immortal Beloved". In the case of Op. 110, delicates melodies are juxtaposed with elaborate counterpoint and in Op. 111 the fugue and variation forms reach their apotheosis.
The Grammy award-winning pianist Daniel Barenboim has been active on the concert stage since the age of seven when he made his stage debut in his hometown of Buenos Aires. Well known for his work with the East-Western Divan Orchestra, a group of young Arab and Israeli musicians, he is currently the director of the Berlin State Opera, La Scala (Milan) and the Staatskapelle Berlin. Barenboim is described as "one of the few musicians in the world today who could accurately be describe as legendary".

That 2nd movement is the most profound, otherworldly, spiritual and ethereal piece of piano music ever written in my opinion. I honestly believe that Beethoven was and will remain utterly unique in human history; how any man, made of the exact same stuff as the rest of us, can have music like that inside of him, is simply astonishing. He soared to heights at this time of his life never surpassed before or since. I don't believe any other artist has ever communicated on an emotional level with quite the same degree of intensity, passion and honesty as Beethoven continues to do, almost 200 years after his death.
Agreed this music does seem to be an objective view of humanity stated from another world. How Beethoven did this beats me completely
Wonderful music and wonderfulinterpretation y Barebboim
People say the tempo is “too slow “ but this is no ordinary sonata !
It’s one that takes the soul to the highest level !
this last one always amazes me,something very magical about it.
Maybe this is the best Sonata I've ever listened to, by the genius that was, is, and will always be Beethoven.
I had to hear this having just read the description in Thomas Mann's Dr Faustus. I knew Barenboim was the version to choose. Incredible performance, incredible piece. I've never heard before.
I felt exactly the same way ..must hear that sonata after reading Thomas Mann..because it's an unbeliveable description..and to hear it is to love it..this Beethoven touches deeply, he breaks all patterns , leaves all behind, and without any hearing..he follows the inner sequenze of tones and rhytmen, or the music of the spheres or the universe
Yeah. I've been reading Mann's Doktor Faustus, and he's forced me to listen to Beethoven's 32nd sonata 😅.
Thank you, Euro Arts Channel. This is a World heritage performance. It is not exaggerated to say that it is perhaps the most profound performance of the most profound music ever created by our species. Knowing the world nowadays, it is not surprising, either, that there are so few views on a platform for the average human around right now.
I am very glad to appreciate Bill Deef says. I am 9O and listened to all the Sonatas when Mr Barenboim played them when being quite young. Nowadays his playing is even more profound. I never have been to listen to anything as gorgeous rendering my favourite composer´s compositions as this Master. In addition it is perfectly natural, as if Beethoven played it. Thanks for loading it. Littlejohn.
Well, there are too few of us watching this channel, but it's the kind of company I like to keep! :-)
I'm glad to be in your company, so to speak, listening to this sublime music. This speaks to all ages and to our times.
@@kareljanecek7089 The late Beethoven makes life worth living. I am 70 and will always think so.
@@jameshadley3014 we may be dispersed, but maybe there will be a day when this music is appreciated by a greater number of our species.
My mother used to listen to this sonata as well as others of course. I was desperate to find it again.
How can all that come from ONE MIND! It is impossible!

Absolutely, sounds like Scott Joplin
Theres also a little Boogi Woogie in it.^^

Wunderbar!
This is the best
This is the haven music
Beethoven is alive.
That's it. Always alive. I think somehow, of all the arts, music achieves this past-present-future effect. As Keats said of the Grecian urn, "a friend to man".
Nunca murió!!!
No a close up on his hands?? How is It possible!
you ought to look better

Roll over Beethoven!🎼🎶🎵🎶🎹
Guys a deaf man wrote this…..
Interesting melodies and ideas, but it dosen't groove!
The groove is in the heart, my friend!
It was composed in 1822. It wasn't meant to 'groove'.
So he was a boring pianist when he was young too. Good to know.
