After I saw you doing the starch routine I have implemented this in my sewing routine. There is a marked improvement in my piecing for my quilts. Always starching, thank you.
Hi Kimberly - I have taken on your technique of heavily starching, drying. pressing fabrics before cutting and piecing them. I love how the stiffness helps so much with cutting and especially with piecing. I have a question for you. After you have pieced your quilt top, do you wash it to get rid of the starch before quilting it OR before gifting the quilt? I started making baby quilts using this starching method and wonder if they should be washed before gifting. Please let me know. Thank you so much!
I absolutely love starching! Thankfully I started quilting because of the this You Tube channel I am not trying to be contrary, but I feel like I have seen Kimberly starch precuts!
Awesome! And the video stops right as you were about to talk about my big question … You do not wash first! How do you keep your fabrics from bleeding once constructed?
Hello Sherri! This clip is from an older livestream. Kimberly typically does not have that problem and she does not pre-wash her fabric. You could try purchasing a color catcher to throw in your washer.
Can you do a video explaining if you prewash or don’t I’m not understanding that. I see clothing and prewash but want to see a quilt as a beginner so I’m confused on the process. Do you only starch and that’s it? Please help!
@@eileenmc4746 Bluing is an entirely different product, & as you know, isn’t popular any longer. Bluing is a combination of water & a chemical commonly called Prussian blue. It was used to make white fabrics that had faded or yellowed look whiter & brighter. There are some dangers when using Prussian blue.
What do you do if your pattern uses a precut and yardage? I started starching after watching you and my yardage cuts are much better. What do I do if a pattern uses both?
Thank you, I starch and I was practicing on some starched fabric and one of my squares on one side was bigger than the other so I had to pin all the way down on that side to try and get the wrinkles and take up all the slack. So what I wanted to know if using different rulers make a difference? Still going to keep practicing
Hello Susan! We recommend using Creative Grids because their rulers have grips on the bottom. www.fatquartershop.com/quilting-notions/quilting-rulers?notion_manufacturer=247 You can add grips to your ruler if you'd like.
@@FatQuarterShopTX I am in the process of just getting all new creative grid rulers but I was wondering if their is a difference in the cutting size of the different rulers and if that might have had something to do with my fabric being off so much one one side because when I cut the fabric they both looked the same. But yes I have some of the rulers in my cart ready to replace
Many ways to starch fabric, but my preferred method is to mix up some liquid starch in water in my sink or a bucket, soak my fabrics (like colors with likes), and then either hang them on my clothesline or drying rack. Inexpensive. Gallon of starch goes a LONG way.
I'm confused. You mentioned not starching precuts in this video, however in your tutorial videos, you recommend starching precuts. Could you please clarify?

Hi, I am having trouble using the spray starch on digitally printed fabrics... the starch just drips right off rather then abosrbing into the fabric. Have you encountered this??? Any suggestions??

The starch is less expensive at Walmart, you can order 12 at a time.
I often go to the Fry's grocery store or starch and find the shelf "empty".
Welp, wish I had seen this before a recent project using layer cakes. I learned, but too late now!! 😀
Kimberly have you tried Walmart for the specific starch that you use? I see it's available on their website.
Hello Susie! No, Kimberly has not tried Walmart for her starch.
Do you have the pattern for the quilt behind you? It so magical!
Hello Claudette! Yes, the pattern is available here: www.fatquartershop.com/quilter-s-cottage-book
Kimberly have you ever used a liquid starch that you mix up and dip your fabric in?
Yeah. Was it also called bluing? Old fashioned rural stores have these things.
Hello Teresa! Kimberly has tried other starching methods but has found that this way works better for her.

If I need the whole precut, I do not starch it even if I have starched yardage.
Was that it? It stopped in the middle of when you were talking.
Hello Dee Ann! This is just a clip from a livestream.
I have been asking all around and have yet to get any answer. Are we starching for the Christmas Mystery? Is there enough fabric to do that?
Hello Cheryl! Yes, you can starch the kit for the Christmastime Mystery QAL.
