Then we sang again, to our own recording. We were in Liverpool aboard tall ship Zebu. It is much too windy at the River Mersey to get a good enough live sound recording for a film. You're right Jay. The last pumping shanty, the crew free to curse about the rotten tub they sailed on. A great first -hand story from Frederick Pease Harlow aboard 'The Akbar'. The crew already drunk from whisky that runners had brought aboard from the local inn, and the shantyman literally dancing on the pumps as they pumped and sang out.

Look up any shanty history, or listen to any 20 versions, and you'll find variations in them all. The best shanties are made up on the spot! Ahoy shipmate. I don't know exactly what you ask but to explain. We were making a film. We recorded the song live. Then we sang to our own recording. We were in Liverpool aboard tall ship Zebu. It is usually too windy there to get a good enough sound for recording. We do sing live aboard that ship occasionally in the summer, to encourage the visitors. Please see our Facebook page, Port Sunlight Sea Dogs. Lots of other live video recordings there. But there is nothing better than the live sound. Also we love people to sing along. Look up any shanty history, or listen to any 20 versions, and you'll find variations in them all. The best shanties are made up on the spot! Ours vary nearly every time we sing, depends how many tots we've had...
