  • Oh, I thought I heard the old man say
    Leave her, Johnny, leave her
It's a long, hard pull to the next pay day
And it's time for us to leave her
    Chorus:
    Leave her, Johnny, leave her
Oh, leave her, Johnny, leave her
Oh, the voyage is done and the winds don't blow
And it's time for us to leave her
Oh, pull you lubbers or you'll get no pay
Oh, pull you lubbers and then be lay
Oh the skipper was bad, but the mate was worse
He'd blow you down with a spite and a curse
And I thought I heard the old man say
It's a long, hard pull to the next pay day

The meaning of the song is that a voyager named johnny misses the voyages on his ship with his crew. The "her" is the ship.

I thought we could already tell that. 😉
I think being glad to come home after a long voyage is in this too.
For those that *have* a home, that is.
I suppose for some of the old sea dogs the sea probably *is* their home.
So then leaving it would be more sad.
Even just leaving for a while.

He's supposed to be glad to go home, but sad to leave the ship, at the same time, so it's nostalgic.
(Which also seems like it should probably go without saying, but as long as we seem to be already in the business of stating the obvious here, I figured, well then, why not. 😉)

There is something rather profound in the simplicity of this song. It's a eulogy to life. The "winds don't blow" = the breath/spirit is gone. You are bidding farewell to your body.

This one is really good for finishing up a camping trip or *any* kind of trip. Doesn't necessarily have to be by boat. (Yes, I know it was originally written for that, I'm only saying it has other uses. ^___^)

For instance it reminds me a bit of when Rosie O'Donnell was singing "Leaving on a Jet Plane" at the end of her TV special/film/whatever about "Rosie's Family Cruise".
Different song, different memories, different context, but still, it was the end of a voyage and she was singing about leaving, so therefore, similar idea. ^____^

This was the traditional chantey sung at the end of the voyage. While the chorus didn't change, the verses were tailored to describe the voyage. The crew was being paid and dismissed so they could make any comments they wanted without fear of retribution by the officers. This version can be considered a generic version of the chantey.

A few of the words are not correct. i.e."spite" should be "spike as in marlin spike" be lay should be belay as to turn up a line on a belaying pin to secure the line. Sorry but the seaman in me had to correct that.

In reality, this was a pump out shanty. The sailors on the pumps sung this to keep in rhythm when they pumped out the ship for the final time as they returned to the dock. Sorry, but it had nothing to do with press gangs or mutiny. It did had to do with work though.

actually.. every time you hear an old drinkin song, general folk song, or shanty, the lyrics are always different. hard for strangers to sing along for the first time but its fun to hear the differences. Know the song I'm A Rover? i know it as "I'm a rover, scarsely sober, im a rover by decree" yet ive heard others say "im a rover, SELDOM sober, im a rover OF HIGH DEGREE"
used to be my job to do these songs and i never heard the same version twice by others.

At first I though this song was about a broke man with multi-personality disorder having to leave his girlfriend. Then I thought it was about leaving Ireland. Only recently did I realize it’s about a sailor leaving his ship.

As with all folk songs, there are a million versions available. And naturally everyone's going to prefer different ones.
I enjoy the shit out of Makem and Clancy but when it comes to sea shanties I'd rather hear a mass of men singing along.
