To be honest, I'm still somewhat conflicted on this topic, but I agree that black individuals straightening or altering their natural hair texture plays into perpetuating racist beauty standards. Our society still privileges Eurocentric ideals of what hairstyles are considered "acceptable" or "professional." By conforming to straight hairstyles, even unintentionally, it upholds the same norms that have historically rejected and shamed Afro-textured hair. While an individual choice, straightening one's hair does feed into the bigger picture of legitimizing white supremacist concepts of what hair is deemed "neat" or "desirable." So in that sense, yes - opting for straight over natural hairstyles among Black people does contribute to racism on a systemic level. We need to learn how to love and take care of our 4c hair. It's a shame that the people who encourage this ideology are in the minority.
That being said, wonderful video. I'm glad that more black people share this perspective. I'm going to subscribe :)

      Firstly,
I want to thank you for subscribing to this channel!
The things I talk about are things I have noticed over the years from childhood to adulthood.
I appreciate any form of positive support and proof of challenging things around us.
Every support goes a long way. I hope to see changes in the black community and as well as termination of racism.
      Once again thank you!
      I really appreciate it!

I loved this video!! I've been watching a lot of videos of this sort recently and it's like a real conversation that matters and needs to be had. I love my natural hair texture as curls, but I also straighten my hair and like it that way too. Sometimes after I wear my straight hair for a while, it's secretly hard for me to switch back to my curls, but when I do go back, I feel the most beautiful. This is a deeper problem we're having and I love that you bring up how social media is strongly influencing the youth. That's all we see in the "it girls" and the "dimes" is them with makeup, altered bodies, and an unnatural hair texture to them. There's a lot of if, and's, and but's when it comes to things like this.

Exactly what this video is saying is black people dont have the right to wear their hair as they see fit because they are black
I straighten my hair because it breaks in its natural form
Thats why my hair is now armpit length

@@CyberMachine some ppl do straighten their hair to please others nd fit in don’t get me wrong. Unfortunately I do think that we probably wouldn’t wanna straighten our hair had we not be pressured from the white man but I don’t think that we wouldn’t have straightened our hair at all in the future either or found out that we can add extensions and weave to it as well. There’s so much that we can do with our hair that if someone simply decided they didn’t wanna be natural, why be mad at their decision I guess. Or why assume that their decision will always be based on the history of oppression against our hair.

@@CyberMachine honestly sometimes straightening your hair and not wanting to wear it in a Afro has nothing to do with society and fitting in. For some it’s a preference. Maybe they fill like it’s easier, or they lack knowledge on how to take care of it or simply do not care.
