It's incredible how these trucks, after more than 50 years of being on the market, and despite the obvious deterioration, still continue to fight. A masterpiece of Italian engineering.
The engine sound just brought back some beautiful childhood memories,,, as kids we used to watch such fiat trucks along the Jinja-Kampala highway, driven by Somalis all the way from Mombasa. Thank you for sharing!
...i lived right next to the main garage where they were serviced in the Somali dense Eastleigh neighborhood in Nairobi and heard that sound daily.....i can still smell the exhaust and oil smells in my sleep 30 years later 🤣. I remember as a child traveling to western kenya and passing these on the hilly areas on the highway to Uganda going so slowly that the turnboy helpers would jump out and walk next to them all the way up...🤣
Notice how clean it's running - little to no smoke at all despite the heavy load and working hard. This engine in very well tuned an in good condition. Don't be deceived the the trucks appearance.
...great point...and indeed, it is a properly tuned diesel, no wasted diesel being blown out the exhaust as black smoke.. I remember as a kid living next to a garage filled with these beasts..i can go to sleep listening to the music coming out of the pipes and i can still smell the diesel fumes and hot oil wafting off this...35 years later.
@@tomm487 I grew up around these too, next to a garages where they would service them. In those days (mid 80's) they were already becoming obsolete in Tanzania for the long haul trade still they remained in at the time. They were being superseded by Scanias in particular, which still remain the mainstay for heavy long haulage until today, albeit Chinese makes are rapidly increasing. But quite a large number of Fiat 682s were still doing the heavy long work in those, complete with 6 axle trailers. I remember they used to have distinct exhaust smell different from all other trucks, and generally would not be smokey compared to other non-turbo contemporaries, unless in really poor state. Those who drove them still swore by them although they were far slower than the turbo charged Scania 111, 112 etc.. They used to say if the Scania did 3 runs to the coast, the Fiat would do only two. They sounded great though as most be fitted with straight through-pipes coming out to the side right behind the rear axel. That engine has a distinct sound by nature and I guess combination of rather large displacement and not turbo just added to their their loud raspy exhaust note. Today a respectable number are still in use, and have found a niche hauling sand and logs into the city of Arusha from quarries and forest reserves in the cities vicinity. These days they no longer pull trailers though and most have mufflers on the exhaust. Most still seem in decent condition though many even sporting various customisations. I often see engines being overhauled and cabs being redone, so clearly the owners still have long terms plans for them.
Çocukken hayatımda bu kamyonu 1994 senesinde sadece 1 defa yalova topçular feribotunda görmüştüm.Dev gibi gelmişti gözüme. Abartısız aşağı yukarı 25-30 ton civarı tuğla yüklüydü. Gördüğüm fiat 682 veya 650 modeliydi diye tahmin ediyorum. O zamanlar bilmiyordum.
The Fiats 682 were initially made popular within the East Africa region by the East Africa Railways which bought them in fleet numbers and later by Kenya Breweries. Haulage operators in Kenya & Somalia bought the used units and were utilised to transport loose cargo and fuel within Somalia, Kenya, Uganda and even Eastern DRC. The Fiats were also used in the famous "Hell Run" hauling from Zambia to Tanzania. When Zambia could no longer access sea ports in Southern Africa. Due to restrictions by the then South African government.

Most of this trucks were previously used in Kenya for decades and miraculously still working in Somalia. Don't even start with the sound, Heavenly music.
.. ti entra dentro ti fa sentire uomo 😱😎
They called it Fiat Simba in Kenya, its rroarr is unmistakable..... its a wonder how they made 180 old horses to pull all that mass😮 through such a punishing terrain😢😢😢
Pour conduire le fiat 682 il fallait avoir une bonne connaissance de la bête en cause de la maniabilité de vitesse, embrayage et l'accélérateur, c'est difficile pour celui qui conduit les camions d'aujourd'hui.
What are saying then? That the truck & trailer aren't overloaded, but just that they're high?😵💫⚗️😵 Maybe that's why the exhaust appears so clean...a close-up of the driver might show the exhaust pipe is routed right down his throat!🥵🚬🤪🚬🥴🚬🧿🪬
How many times has that engine been rebuilt ? Both truck and trailer are clearly overloaded. A significant amount of energy is being wasted in noise and heat !
Questi motori erano masicci semplici pulire iniettori mettere in gase la pompa mettendo dei spessori(ranelle) anno demolito solo perché non facevano economia per le case autobolostiche
Epic Reminds me of travelling overland in East Africa more than half a lifetime ago. Buses heavily overloaded often the engine uncovered with an oil monkey putting a few drops of oil here and there. Old roadmasters I believe. When tomorrow was a promise not a threat. Alas seeing this now makes me sad thinking about the lost generations of Afrika. Dear God allow the people to find peace and prosperity.

For real, minimal electronics makes it easy to fix.
😊😊
Fiat started to make them in 1952
probably been replaced with a later Daihatsu diesel engine from the 80s
