Actually, they don't really need to follow the entire continuity of the original film. These are not prequels to the 1968 film, they're a rebooted narrative. Meaning they could retell the events of the original as a direct sequel where only 400 years have passed as opposed to thousands.

Watching War, you obviously root for Caesar and the apes since they are shown to be compassionate, intelligent, and relatively peaceful beings, however you totally understand the antagonist, the Colonel. If the Apes had time to grow in number and build, humanity would be overtaken. You are left wondering who to root for, the main character, or your own race. Of course, if it were real we'd be choosing our own race, but still, amazing movie.

There was no stoping the verbal language taking virus, so killing infected human beings was just plain wrong. What humanity needed to do was use their existing resources to adapt to the virus (such as mass learning sign language). Instead the Colonel forced the last of the military to be destroyed. There is something missing. From all humanity, five continents, only some people form the US would have survived? Ceasars gang were less than a thousand apes based around SF. They couldnt even take over 1 US state. Even after 300 years, they seem to still be a medium size tribe in a region of north california. What about the other regions of the US? What about other countries? Russians, for example, are tought people, they could trhived. There arent many apes in russia, for example. What about people from island places, like japan or ireland or new zeland?
What about south america? Considering that only big apes like chimps, gorilas and orangotangos would become smart and if they had contact with humana, the world population of big apes is around 1 million. Maybe only 20/30% of them are in contact with human. Most of them are the jungle. So probably only these population got smart.

In the original continuity it was a gorilla named Aldo who lead the great Ape uprising when he publicly said "No".
Though even within the original series when they went back in time, this is retconned within the narrative with Caesar leading the uprising. Though instead of him first openly saying "No" against oppression, the first ape to publicly speak "No" is Caesar's wife Lisa, who says so as a plea for Caesar to not turn into a monster like the humans.
