You ARE a proper artist, Helen - and a loving, thoughtful daughter.
I think so too and loving the materials is respecting them and makes you a even better artist in my view.
I agree, I’m not sure why you don’t see yourself as an artist, but then again, I don’t think of myself as an artist. And I do understand it when she says she enjoys the supplies more 😂.
Thank you! I think I don't feel like a proper artist because I'm not really trying to communicate anything through my art, I'm just playing with nice art materials and colours!
@@helencryer Same here 🙋🏻♂️
I'm pretty sure I read somewhere that a wannabe artist thinks about making art but doesn't actually make any. Then there's supply collectors that buy all the bits but never use any of them so everything stays pristine. An actual artist makes art, experiments with supplies, styles and techniques from other artists, which you do, a lot. 😉 Loving the supplies and loving making little travel kits and trying different mediums and papers is just a part of the learning process. A big fun part 😄 Using those things is what makes you an artist Helen and sharing what you learn on here also makes you a teacher. Embrace it 😃
Lovely gift idea. I did something similar for my Mum for her birthday.
Thank you!! I think in my mind, subconsciously I've felt that an artist is someone who is putting down emotions or experiences on paper, or trying to communicate deep meaning through their art, while I'm over here thinking something like 'Oooh! It's so creamy and turquoise!!'
@@helencryer I understand that. Every time an artist is interviewed it seems they are asked some questions about how they feel about their work and what they are trying to communicate with a piece. I don't think I could answer those questions about my own stuff, because I don't think of it that way. I think everyone that creates anything, puts some of themselves into what they do, mostly subconsciously. It would be impossible not to. I'm sure we all pour our hopes, fears, and grief etc into our creations, I just think most of us don't give it a second thought though, I know I don't. That doesn't mean we aren't professional or don't take our art seriously though, we just have different priorities. I guess some artists are just more attuned to their emotions and are able to harness that energy in ways I can't imagine, and I'm sure some of them love the sensation or feel of their chosen medium while they work, or have a love affair with a special type of pen and paper or color or brush. I couldn't imagine a potter not enjoying the feel of working with clay. We are too hard on ourselves these days. Enjoy your creamy turquoise and have fun. I have a thing for turquoise at the moment too, that and my DIY purple/grey shadow color I'm trying to perfect. Just don't ask me what I'm trying to say with my shadow color 😂
What a lovely, thoughtful gift. I love playing with the art materials also. Swatching, color charts, mixing charts. Such fun! Thanks for another enjoyable video.
What a sweet gift! Even if he wasn't interested, I bet he'll give it a go now.
What a lovely gift
That’s a lovely gift idea, gifts with thought behind them are so lovely. X
Really nice gift idea for your dad, nice palette as well. I hope he gives watercolor painting another try :) thank you for your videos!
Thank you! I hope he does too!
What a wonderful, thoughtful gift…I’m sure your Dad will be delighted, and unable to resist painting with it! You’re a lovely artist *and* person, @Helen Cryer…your videos always bring me joy and awe, and are my favorites to watch. 😊
PS - I noticed your tube of DS Buff Titanium was running low…can I send you another one (or any other color)? I live in the states, and it would be my pleasure to do something so small in comparison to what you do for us so often!
This genuinely touched me so much!! Thank you, truly! I didn't realise when I started doing RUclips that one of the nicest things would be hearing people say they enjoy my videos (I guess my hope was that they'd be 'informative' or 'useful' in some way) - that is thanks enough!
@@helencryer Thank you for such a lovely comment, Helen.
May I ask your longer-term opinion of the Mijello pure pigment set? Specifically, if they have a strong odor? I got one of their smaller, cheap sets for my daughter several yrs ago, & many tubes smelled…putrid. (Tbf, I get severe migraines, so sometimes it’s a “me” problem; that said, even *she* found the smell to be “gross.”)
I love the idea of single-pigment paints, & use them most often over mixes, so this set has been calling me for years. idk if I got a “bad batch,” or if they have something in their makeup that results in a strong odor.
If you have time to lmk your thoughts on that, & the overall set now that you’ve had them a bit, I’d love your thoughts. If you DON’T have time to spend replying to comments all day, that’s 💯 fine too! Thank you again, for ALL you do for us!
I haven't noticed any particular odour about them stronger than other watercolours (though I'm not particularly smelly sensitive).
I actually really like the paints and am kind of surprised they're not more popular than they are. I find the colours smooth and clear, and probably the closest comparison would be Senneliers. The Mijellos stay quite moist in the same way, and rewet very easily, and are very pigmented and vibrant.
I'm slightly less keen on their browns - I just have others I like more.
What a lovely gift for your dear dad I am sure he will love it
I applauded when you said you get immense joy out just dealing with Art supplies! Me too, friend! So glad I’m not alone. ❤❤ thanks for the video, your dad will be thrilled!
Haha, thank you!!
I too enjoy messing with art supplies whether I’m swatching, organizing or actually using it to make art. I think it’s all the colors 🎉. Doesn’t matter whether it’s a creation, pencil or paint 🎨 ❤. Hope Dad loves his palette 😊
What a lovely present 😊
This is such a sweet and thoughtful gift. ❤
Your videos are always such a delight. I feel like I’m visiting with a friend. What a thoughtful lovely gift.
This is so nice! Thank you!
a painting session with your Dad would b fab when u next visit him x love Alli XXX
Lovely gift!
Love this. Always enjoy seeing others' choices for a palette, gift ones included. Thank you for sharing.
Thanks!
What a lovely and thoughtful gift. ❤️
Hi Helen, Dad here. I got up early, excited to open your present sent earlier in the post and was delighted with the card and art set including the 3 paint brushes. I have just watched your RUclips post and am proud of you!!! Love, Dad
Hi Dad! Happy Father's Day!!! Thank you! xxx
I so get you 😊. Love to work with and arrange art materials 😊. So fulfilling.
It's just delightful! Sometimes I think I feel a bit 'less than' for it, or like I don't deserve to have all the nice things, but it is what it is!!
@@helencryer yes, our society has taught us to put a price tag on everything to decide its worth. I mean, if it doesn’t make money, don’t do it - kinda. One has to go first some time through life, to find out that worthy can be seen from many different angles. 😊
Lovely idea for a gift! I’m with you, I *love* selecting colours and making up new palettes; it’s just as much fun as painting 😊.
What a thoughtful & personal gift for your dad, I'd say he'll love it! 👏🏼 btw.. you are definitely an artist!
Thank you!
One of your wonderful creations 😍
I love choosing which paints to put together for a palette it’s so relaxing and really enjoyable swatching them out,I can spend an age doing this. Such a great idea for a gift, wish I was your dad 😂😂😂,lucky dad.
What a lovely thoughtful gift for your father. I love your color choices and I’m sure he will too!
Lucky dad! We all like swatching, sorting & seeing how others prepare their paints & mediums & general art stuff ! Thanks.
Lovely gift for any dad who needs a bit of a nudge to paint.😊
Wish I could do the same....but being an invalid on a benefit, that keeps being cut...its hard enough to afford groceries.
I did get Dad to come over and we spent a lovely day painting together for a few hours.
Perhaps we can do that again.
Jo Massey, from New Zealand.
That sounds a wonderful thing to do with your Dad! I'm sorry you're facing such challenges.
What a thoughtful gift... your love of materials in no way detracts from your artistry. I so enjoy your videos and your art. Watching you create is a real pleasure
That's really lovely - thank you!
What a thoughtful gift and a lovely choice of colours. He will love it! You are an artist! 🙏💜
I hope your Dad enjoys opening your gift as well as having a dabble! 🐨👍
Thank you!
That is a sweet little gift. 💚
You are an artist! This is a fantastic gift for your dad. I did this for a work friend who was starting watercolor and who couldn't afford all good quality paints out of the gate. If you Dad likes these colors, he can buy paints as he runs out so that it's not a huge initial expense. I think including several greens was a great idea. Just a suggestion if you haven't sent this off yet, I think adding the brand (an abbreviation under the colour name) might be helpful if your dad wants to replace paints as he goes (I get not overwhelming him with pigment info).
Thank you!!
Again, this was such a nice video to watch, Helen! I really love your casual "YouTubing style". Your videos always convey such a relaxed and happy atmosphere. I'd love to think that your everyday life is like this all the time. And I must admit that had a good laugh when you said you don't consider yourself to be a "proper" artist, because you love your materials so much. I think that would be like Lewis Hamilton saying he's not a real racing driver because he likes cars almost as much as driving them real fast. Or Eric Clapton saying that he likes guitars just as much as playing them. Honestly, I guess a lot of artists are more or less art supply addicts. That's totally okay, it's part of the game. You're a proper artist still.
Thank you!!! It's the atmosphere I'm lucky to enjoy a lot of the time, but definitely not all!! (For example, I spent most of Saturday in a hospital Emergency Department helping with a friend having seizures, and a good chunk of yesterday on the beach as a Coastguard responding to a potential explosives device that had washed ashore, and my teenage son came to me a few minutes ago saying he thinks he's dislocated his finger!)
What a great gift! The only thing I would have done differently, due to my own personal preference, is give a block of cold pressed watercolor paper. However, hot pressed paper does have the benefit that it can double up for usage with watercolor pencils and coloring pencils. BTW my Derwent 0.5mm leads work perfectly and they do not break in my non-Derwent mechanical pencil. My Derwent mechanical pencil is the problem and breaks leads.
Thanks! That's really interesting about the leads!
@@helencryer you’re welcome!
I made my dad a palette just like this and when he died I got it back. Now it’s in my drawer 😭 edit: I’m just the same with playing with materials and making palettes and sets. But I see you as an artist your art is beautiful
I'm so sorry!! Thanks for your kind words!
Great video, I just have a question... How long will the colors from the tubes on the palette last... If I put them on the palette with a lid... how long can I use them... Thank you and greetings from the Czech Republic 🌞☀️🎨 🖌️
I used watercolours, so the idea is that you let them completely dry out, and they will just allow a good amount of pigment to be lifted when you re-wet them as needed. They will last like this for years.
You can do this with watercolour and gouache paints, but not acrylic or oil paints because they will dry and not be able to re-wet.
