  • Lots of folks like Fromm for their dogs. So how do the three lines compare to each other...and to other well known brands? Let's take a look at their website and their nutrient levels.

    Before I found you and AnimalDocRae I was spending $300 a month to feed my 2 cats and 1 pug!!!! Now I spend way less, and according to you they are eating better. Science Diet for my pug (along with kibble toppers like bone broth because he is so very picky), Fancy Feast and Purina Uinary Care kibble for my cats. It feels so good to be more informed as a pet parent, and not be taken advantage of by these "natural" "holistic" diets that were costing a fortune!! And wouldn't you know it, my pug was suffering from reflux issues and since switching him to Science Diet he has been doing way better!!

    The last 2 adopted dogs i had coincidentally were young and had both of them on fromm puppy formula (bright pink bag) and the other dog, fromm puppy large breed (bright blue bag) . Its specifically puppy. Both dogs grew big and strong, great coats etc for the first year or so of their life. Ive personally seen good results off this brand. Im speaking only kibble, they did also eat some various canned varieties fromm and other ones. Once on a adult diet theyre tummies are stronger and then do a rotational different brands, different types, can, kibble, raw frozen, home stuff, dehydrated, air dried etc...this rotational method i have had now 8 dogs eating this way and 4 still have, 4 have past but lived long enriched lives the longest at 18 yo. The oldest i have now is a large breed rottweiler/pit bull whose almost 16 yo in July thriving. Coats exceptional, poops healthy.

      Isn't that the kind of marketing that Glen and Dr. Rea don't like? In fact, Dr. Rea has a couple of videos, humorous, where she redesigns pet food bags to reflect their true ingredients. One example: she changes a picture wolves running through the forest to some dogs eating out of a dumpster. LOL

    • @George.J
      @George.J 7 месяцев назад

      @@edschulhof6303 No, they don’t like marketing that insinuate untrue things. My point was that science brands have the luxury to be more artistic while still using honest marketing. I’ve seen Dr Rae’s videos; I don’t believe there would be much to change in a science brand’s bag.

      @@George.J My comment was more for Glen than for you. I'm probably the only one who likes him, who is not a fan of Hill's. Thank you for your videos! I watch, along with other sources, to keep an open mind. I am confused by this video, where you go on about the virtues of the Fromm family operation. (I agree-refreshing to not sell out). I thought in a prior video, you criticized the Fromm ingredients ("Why are we putting cheese in our dog foods?") and these Fromm bags are labeled for all breeds and ages. You have said that's feeding puppy food. We rotate Fromm 4 Star chicken a la veg, duck, beef kibble varieties. We also feed cooked meat, salmon, farm eggs, homemade bone broth-no salt and Weruva wet foods. Our dog is 9 and thriving, but your prior comments have me seeking a more "Senior" formula.

      The cheese comment must be from someone else. Yes, I like the company but you are correct about all diets being All Life Stage. That means excessive nutrient levels.youre feeding an awful lot of different things. I would try consolidating a bit. Publishing a review on Weruva cans tomorrow!

      Danielle, I did a video on large breed puppy foods but not regular puppy. I would trust any of the main puppy food brands out there. The high levels of nutrients are high and easier to achieve than the restricted nutrients in adult foods, which are more critical.

    I am feeding my 10-month old Boston Terrier Blue Buffalo Life Protection puppy food. Is there a similarly priced or lower priced kibble you’d recommend instead?
    My senior chihuahua is currently getting Nature’s Recipe because it had a lower protein count than the senior foods I saw at the store, and she is refusing the Purina Pro Plan Kidney function food. It may shorten her life, but I had to choose between death by kidney failure or death by starvation, and I refused to starve my pet another day. Is there a kibble that isn’t kidney function food, that might be a better option? The Natures Recipe has a crude analysis protein level of 24%.

      Dale, any of the name brand puppy foods are fine. I’m more concerned about your pup in kidney failure. If she won’t eat the NF there are a few varieties of Hills kidney diets and Royal Canin kidney diets. They all come with a money back guarantee. I really want her on one of those. If not, I am willing to bet the Science Diet Senior foods would be lower in protein and phosphorus and sodium to reduce the workload on her compromised kidneys.

    IAMS contains by-products. I would not put that in the same category. I also look at things like recalls. Of these 4, our vet nutritionist says a firm no to 3 of these 4. She recommends home cooked if you are able, or adding canned to a good quality kibble. (For a 20 minutes video, there’s not a lot of substance to the review.)

      I called Health Extension and they could not give me actual nutrient levels. But they did tell me all their Adult diets are All Life Stage which means the nutrient levels are high enough for growing puppies so they would be excessive for an adult dog. It is amazing to see the obvious care, concern and cost that goes into these companies these days and then they ignore optimal nutrients after all that! Sorry but I can’t recommend an All Life Stage food but would have been interested in seeing the actual numbers.

    Glenn. Love your videos. But do you know Fromm is one food highest on the list for DCM. Even their gold has had cases and that’s grain inclusive. Last I heard their “head chef” was a chemical engineer. Not a food I would feed. Diet associated dialated cardiomyopathy in dogs is a science based group on the forefront of the research. If you like canine nutrition and dog food discussion as a group, you’ll love the DCM group. Tons of stories of dogs with DCM diet related verified by cardiologists fed Fromm

    • @PetFoodPuzzleGuy
      @PetFoodPuzzleGuy  4 месяца назад +2

      Stephanie, I’ve been asked to do a video on DCM but I feel I’m just not qualified. I do believe the FDA over reacted but though no one can find a causal link, there seems to be some link. Just too many questions to answer. I would not feed Fromm simply because it’s All Life Stage.

    • @giraffezebra2698
      @giraffezebra2698 2 месяца назад

      The Tufts “study” on DCM is interesting reading if you look at the entire paper, not the so called conclusions. Much of the data was self-reported, not based on a controlled study, and only about 70 dogs. Some of the dogs had heart conditions other than DCM. Some dogs were fed multiple foods. My vet doesn’t put a lot of trust in that sensationalist paper.

    You joke about feathers in pet food. The FDA considers meal used in pet food to be a rendered product. The North American Renderers Association guide, "Essential Rendering" actually includes feathers. It says, "Hydrolyzed poultry feather meal (FeM) is pressure-cooked, clean undecomposed feathers from slaughtered poultry, free of additives and/or accelerators." " Modern feather meals greatly exceed the minimum level of AAFCO required digestibility." Who wants seconds?!

      Patrick, did a video on Sundays. Not impressed. Watched a few videos on the owner of Carna4. Nice lady, very commuted, but knows nothing about nutrition. But in reality both those foods and Fromm included, are All life Stage foods, so they are in fact puppy foods. There is no nutritional reason to feed to your adult dog or worse, your older dog.
