    The basic aim of steering is to ensure that the wheels are pointing in the desired directions. This is typically achieved by a series of linkages, rods, pivots and gears. One of the fundamental concepts is that of caster angle - each wheel is steered with a pivot point ahead of the wheel; this makes the steering tend to be self-centering towards the direction of travel.

    What is not shown here is the geometry of alignment at turning. There is a common center of curvature of all the four wheels during turning. This is to prevent any of the wheels from side sweeping. Note that the front wheels open at an angle during turning but goes back to parallel when straight forward. If the wheels are parallel at turning it will be misaligned because there are more than one center of curvature.

    Hi Ramesh. In the Ackermann system, the wheels swivel at equal angles when driving along a curve. At low speeds, this may cause scrubbing of the wheels and heavy steering loads. A French carriage builder, Charles Jeantaud, modified it in 1878 to overcome this problem. Ackermann steering as we know it today includes the Jeantaud modification. The video shows this modified mechanism in which the axes of the steered front wheels to intersect on the axis of the non-steered rear wheels. Am I right?

    Dear Yashwanth, Thank you for your feedback. I run the animation for given design and it took the same amount of rotation angle in both direction. So, the answer to your question would be that the value of rotation angle in both direction would be the SAME, wherever you put the box.

    exactly what i was looking for...new to driving and just wanted to know...how many rotation to give a steering wheel to make a wheel turn a certain degree. so 180 degree steering is 30 degree turning.

    Almost all vehichles today still use a mechanical linkage. some now adays in the year 2014 are now coming with a steering system called "Drive by wire" which completely disconnects the rack from the steering wheel, -Soto-

    Very nice linkage model. Do you know why the steering mechanism returns to the straight direction when moving and load is applied to the steering wheel? Someone asked me that a while ago and I could not answer.... Thanks in advance.

      +ashish sahu Depends on your application. For small utility vehicles, rack and pinion or the one suggested in the video are good enough. If your load is high though, power steering is necessary.

      do you know about bevel gears? it is used here to transmit the motion of steering column to the drop arm. bevel gears quite common in transmitting motion in perpendicular axes. hope it helped!

    • @odouls779
      @odouls779 8 лет назад +1

      +Subhani Mohammed This is done with worm and sector combination. The worm gear is on the steering shaft and the sector is in the steering lever. When the steering wheel is turned the sector gear is moved by the worm foreward or rearward depending on which way it is turned. Then the steering arm, being on the same shaft as the sector, oscillates with the sector gear.
