Excellent as Curley in the 2017 BBC Proms Oklahoma! From this clip, I'd guess that this concert version (clearly narrated and not fully staged) had less rehearsal time.

Quite simply a good voice but like dozens of other singers in musical theatre. This performance lacks emotion, subtly and nothing distinctive in his lyric interpretation. This song was cut out of "On the Town' when it was filmed, so Frank Sinatra never had the chance to record it.He had a good, but not exceptional baritone voice, but his voice had a unique quality and his lyric interpretation, emotional subtly always to the forefront.Listen to his rendition of 'Lonely Town' from 'On the Town' recorded 1957 on album 'Where are You' a masterclass from one of the greatest singers of popular songs of the 20th century.

Peter Howill you cant compare Nathaniel Hawkins with Frank Sinatra .you can compare him with Gordon Mc Rae no with Sinatra.Frank wanted to sing Lucky to be me in the movie but on Broadway it was sung by John Bottles who played Gabi the Gene Kelly role in the movie. As they cut many songs from the Berstein score they could have given this song to Sinatra but Kelly directed the movie and didnt let Sinatra sing it but he also didnt and sang Main Street composed for the film instead Frank later sang and recorded the other On the town Gaby song Lonely town

@@dianaaljadeff2983 Frank might have sung 'Lonely Town' in the film (he certainly wanted to) but the word from Louis B. Mayer was that most of the score couldn't be used, if what I've read is correct.

Guy can sing a lovely song but his rendition sadly lacking in emotion and 'telling a story', sounds 'churned out'.Superior versions by Tony Bennett and Andy Williams.

Tony leaves a lot more space and sings it as a ballad they way it should be sung. It was Bill Evans who made it famous in the late 50s the way we know it today. My favourite version is by Monica Zetterlund accompanied by Bill Evans Trio.

@@svensvensson6705 Pop singers have far more leeway when they perform songs from musicals to alter the tempo, etc. In any case, I dispute the notion that in the context of the show this should be considered a "ballad": surely it's closer to being an uptempo number, as Gabey is flying high because he's made a date with his "dream girl" Ivy Smith, and is awaiting her in Times Square. (Gabey's "ballad" comes earlier in Act I: "Lonely Town.") The tempo and mood in this performance seem just about right. Also, instead of referencing pop singers, how about considering the composer's own 1960 recording -- the best of his studio versions of his musicals -- with baritone John Reardon (an opera singer who occasionally crossed over to Broadway) as Gabey? ruclips.net/video/wKJxoQ_IlS4/видео.html
Or how about the terrific Tony Yazbeck in the 2014 Broadway revival: ruclips.net/video/6TCtjdUXzew/видео.html

@@treesny So well stated, and I could not agree more with your points, especially as to show-appropriate tempo and mood. Until discovering this performance, John Reardon's was my absolute gold standard. Perhaps it's simply the difference between listening to a consummately fine studio recording and seeing video of a live performance, but I was impressed both by Nathaniel Hackmann's voice and his contagious enthusiasm not only with the notes but in acting out the joy of someone in Gabey's enviable state.
Ditto, Tony Yazbeck, in a more NYC way, based on watching a promotional video shot at NYC locations. BTW, none of my recent discoveries knock Mr. Reardon off the pedestal - just happy to see current young performers getting it so right with this remarkable song.
If you or anyone else knows of the availability of this program in its entirety on DVD, I'd love to have that information!
