    Thanks for this.
    For those wanting to plant immediately you don’t need to dry them out. I planted some freshly fermented seeds and dried ones at the same time, both worked well with the non-dry seeds appearing a day or two sooner

    Thanks from the UK! We had the best cherry tomatoes this year and with your help we'll be having them again next year!

    You can also use parchment paper. That is what I use and the seeds once dried do not stick.

    Same process, extract the seeds and ferment them anyways. I actually have a photo of two tomatoes plants growing out of a tomato. I extracted them, fermented and they grew wonderfully the following year.

    What would you suggest to do if the seeds already have little sprouts when harvesting from an over ripe tomato? Same process

    Nice, did not know you should do it like this, I also thought you should not eat the skins as they are undigestible and it's the equivalent of eating plastic.
    Is there ever a problem with fungas gnats, and I suppose wild yeast it doing the fermenting, could you add bread yeast?

    If you keep the skins they make excellent additions to pasta sauce. They even freeze well.

    Just out of curiosity, are tomatoes like peppers in the way that they can cross pollinate and produce seeds that are hybrids instead of the type of tomato they came from? I grow both peppers and tomatoes in a greenhouse and would like to save some of my seeds for next year but I don't want hybrids.

    Hey Brother, I thought to get the best tomato seeds, you needed to let them almost rot on the vine, that's the way my grandpa taught me and the way I always do it, just leave the very best on the plant until the fruit is almost ready to fall on it's own weight, if I'm mistaken please let me know..
    Thanks!

    Hey great video, when you say they'll be good for next year, you mean I can't use them right away, after I dry them a week?

    could i skip the fermentation part

    Why is fermentation part of this process? This is a 10 year old video so I don’t even know if you’ll see this. But I have sungolds that I’ve never had before this year, my neighbors gave me a plant and boy are they delicious. They mentioned something once that you can buy seeds but they aren’t like this guys. Not sure why his are special but it sounded like there won’t be any more so I definitely want to save seeds. Thank you for the info and for the person that suggested parchment paper, I will do that. And how long will dry seeds be good? Or do I need to do this yearly?

    • @Growyourheirlooms
      @Growyourheirlooms  9 месяцев назад

      Fermenting kills certain seed-borne diseases reducing the chances of the plant dying from pathogens that may have been introduced. However, you could just clean the seeds and dry them but there is always a risk. The seed will easily last 5 years or more

    Can you do it with the Sun Sugar variety which is a hybrid? Why must they ferment? Other seeds just require you sort the good from the bad in water. I just started selling these on a bigger scale this past year with my edamame and CRESBI crates but I loved the little sun sugars so much I named my farm/business after them!
    Thanks,Linda

      Linda Fritz You mean you have a farming business and you don't understand why you don't save seed from hybrids? Surely you jest!

    Peppers can cross with other peppers just like tomatoes can cross with other tomatoes, however, they can't cross with each other (sort of a pomato LOL)

    Why do u need to ferment

    • @Growyourheirlooms
      @Growyourheirlooms  2 года назад

      It is common theory that fermentation reduces pathogens on the seed. However there are those that claim it doesn't need to be done. But I'm a strong advocate of it.

  • @Growyourheirlooms

    It's not that you're mistaken, it's just not necessary in my opinion. The only requirement is to make sure they are FULLY ripe. That's why I wait for about a week after they are ripe. Has worked for me the last 30+ years. I've never let them almost rot but it surely can't hurt the seed IMHO. However if we're talking cucumbers, then picking them ripe will only produce white immature seeds. Cukes MUST be left on the vine way past the picking stage, but that's another video.

    There's a drought. When rinsing stuff I prefer to do it over a bowl and take that water out to the garden instead of just down the drain. Call me OCD if you want but I hate to waste water these days. But I DO live in the desert. Each drop of water is previous commodity for my garden and animals. :•)

      Yuu-chan Kawaii Sure, they'll sprout and grow, but God only knows what kinds of tomatoes, if any, you'll get!
