My favorite response to deliberately disrespectful insults is to calmly ask the perpetrator "what would motivate you to say that?" This lets them know you don't reflexively accept the premise behind their insult, and it suddenly and unexpectedly turns the moral spotlight on them.

Mastering my anger at being disrespected is by far the hardest part of stoicism for me. In fact, as I was watching this video, I was cursing a coworker who consistently makes my job more difficult. This video playing in the background as I was literally banging on my keyboard helped me to calm down. Thanks for being there in the moment!

The anger is anger at yourself for not stating and upholding boundaries. Listen to the anger's message, take responsibility for your part, and adjust your behavior and communication.
Learning NVC (nonviolent communication) makes you better at stating your boundaries.
Ultimately nobody respects you but you.

I'm experiencing that with my direct superior right now.
Nick picking every little thing. Write me up and exaggerating everything citing policy while my peers get away with doing the exact same things I'm being scrutinized for.
I filed a complaint against him initially but to no avail but I endured and now I have earned the respect of others who are aware of what I am going through.
Now I got news from his superior that I am being transferred to another location doing the same job but with a different team and a different superior.
    Stoicism works. It really does.

Ive been struggling with my boss who was being very disrespectful and I began by addressing it directly in a calm manner and after a few weeks talked to upper management who talked to him about it. Things have been better for a week since.
However, I was still mad, thinking about how he treated me before and how I dont trust this. It would provide me with more serenity to have a short memory.

I've been meditating for over 15 years and doing" self work" for just as long!!. I was always in the middle of something or wanted to be the center of attention (I was a real hard head). But I've learned through life!!. I just started listening to the stoic ways!! It's not hard to do if it's just anybody!! But how do you take disrespect from people near you!!(your brothers and your own family !!)! You still love them and you're not going to walk away from them !! I learned to understand everybody sees things at different levels!!They don't see what we see !! They are still blind! I CAN'T JUST LEAVE THEM !! SO EVEN WITH ALL THE WORK !! SO PEOPLE Y WILL DISRESPECT YOU AND YOU NEED TO TAKE IT OR HANDLE ( IF THEY TOUCH ME ).. IT CAN'T BE A GOOD THING THAT RELIGION (THAT WAS MADE TO CONTROL HUMANS) NOW IS SPIRITUALITY EVERYBODY IS SAYING JUST ACCEPT EVERYTHING, IF SOMEBODY COMES TO YOU AND SMACKS YOU IN THE FACE, SPITS IN YOUR FACE !!JUST SMILE AND WALK AWAY!!. AFTER ALL THIS YEARS OF TRYING TO BE GOOD I REALIZE THAT'S A LOT OF EVIL IN THE WORLD YOU CAN ONLY DO SO MUCH!! THEN YOU NEED TO ALSO BE TRAINED IN WAYS OF SELF-DEFENSE!! SOMETIMES VIOLENCE IS THE ONLY WAY.. WHOEVER DOESN'T THINK THAT HASN'T BEEN IN A HARD ENOUGH PLACE OVER AND OVER AND OVER AND OVER AND OVER AND OVER AND OVER AND OVER AND OVER NOW

    • @Martyn_Wolf
      @Martyn_Wolf Год назад +1

"!They don't see what we see !! They are still blind!" - This is what could be called spiritual egotism in play. You assume someone else blind for not knowing what you yourself now know, when you were once in their place. On a different note about disrespect and family.
To not take disrespect from your own family is a simple ad easy one, you have to stop giving a fuck about what they think of you. You care way more than you believe you do about their opinons. As an example: If your parents interupt you when talking - simply look them in th eye and state "I find it disrespectful and rude that you interupt me when I talk, you didn't raise me to interupt others when talking, take you own advice and use it." and then walk away.

Totally agree with you hun in the end you owe me the only thing that works with these demons to reach them a lesson is a taste for their own medicine I tried turning the other cheek for years their behaviours just for worse once I reacted the same way they treated me they backed off finally! Bullies are basically low lives getting off on abusing people they’re like energy vampires makes them feel good to make others feel bad! Sadly there is no changing them so have to reloads when to walk away or run! They’re narcissists and many are actually psychopaths!

"You teach others how to treat you by what you tolerate". This one statement goes against the majority of advice in this video. Walk away, turn a blind eye, consider the source of information, etc. Yes, by taking the High Road in most events you don't waste energy on a negative person. However, by not addressing their actions you teach people it's ok to walk around insulting everyone, making it much harder to reverse in the future.

Just shows why and how you have no emotional intelligence to have a true understanding of what the video is trying to specifically teach as best contextual and expressively as it stoically can but you reacted relatively too quickly by commenting unwisely before thinking it fully through and understand the different various perspectives of thinking and understanding the all possible facets of responses to the disrespect and intelligently making the best decision for the best possible outcome for your path in terms of the highest standards and values for one’s genuine purpose in their lifepath, how smooth and graceful your journey will equate to the level of wisdom and patience one has, for those qualities are VIRTUOUS❤,
Someone who goes around constantly disrespecting people just tells you the level of person that is so why would you be hanging around something that pathetic anyhow, in other words, pointless and after telling once second time you a wise person would and should just avoid and ignored in the future, get it that’s what emotional intelligence entails since you can’t easily change anymore if even possible, for people are set in their habitually ways but odds of changing is very low and not worth it in terms of emotional frustration and a waste of energy, thereby avoiding and having “emotional intelligence” to crossing the red line DISRESPECT, and understanding emotionally that idiot will programme his emotional and mental reality towards Men-tally-ill, too much (tally) of anything (mental) and one becomes I’ll. Too many men (tally) (bodies), and females can become BIPOLAR, especially MORE than ONE within A menstrual CYCLE, after FIVE on average science says females cannot pair bond anymore😵‍💫😂 🤔❤♾

Now i am always calm with disrespect, but i failed in the past when i was young. Universe just give you what you deservem if you respect every living soul, and respect yourself in every second of your life, nobody will be able to disrespect you. No one can break you if you are resepctfull 100% of time even when you are alone with yourself... Sincere Respect (not the shallow one lol..) is a gift of the universe for those who really deserve it.... Also the hardest part to master is to never talk badly of people even when it is true, unless there is an unfair situation you want to get out of...because when you talk badly even when it is true, the universe and your karma get lower respect, then the universe want to disrespect you.... in contrary, if your tongue is fully mastered, you will get ultimate respect from universe...

2:30-- Note that the there are essentially two possible explanations for any possible "insult":
    1. The person is wrong and projecting their own fear, pain, etc. This is no insult to me. It is harmless. Let my distress be for this other person who is in pain.
    2. The person is correct and has noticed a way that I can grow. This is also no insult to me. It is helpful. Let my discomfort be temporary; having realizing my shortcoming I have an opportunity to improve and this is a reason for happiness. Or, at least, seeing my own shortcoming, I can more easily forgive the shortcomings of others.
In short, no one can be "disrespected" by either a foolish insult or wise counsel; this means that the only disrespect is what I do to by myself when I allow myself to be manipulated into anger by a foolish insult or when I futilely ignore wise counsel.

I believe to master the Stoic ways is to live it and breath it , and to bring back the traditions society use to follow when a lady gets up from a dinner table the men should stand up , say good morning or good evening speak with a high intellect good vocabulary live by rules as in the people of the 1950s and the 1960s ladies dress like ladies and men like men they were concerned about what there neighbors would how they look in there clothes these are the back bone of anyone to carry themselves with dignity self respect things would be better as to the things we are talking about here in this GREAT! To handle disrespect, we should make a rule that people who show deliberate disrespect towards others get instantly punished. But don't be confused, sometimes it's just anger but there's a difference between being angry and outright disrespectful.

Seconded. However, as tempting as that rule may be, I fear that it would only further incite recalcitrance, for humans are a stubborn species and our deepest, darkest desire is to dominate and prove ourselves stronger than any man-made rules….

Ancient knowledge (by now), but still worth more than gold. Is this because we continue to be too cocky for our good? We haven't forgotten it. Which proves that humility pays in the sense of wisdom, which leads to the ability of humility, which might be the only path to true wisdom? Am I incorrect in my understanding of this advice?

What I like about stoicism is that it is realistic and pragmatic without crossing the line into victim-blaming.
There are other schools of thought on the topic of self-help that frequently try to excuse or minimise the misdeeds of others and your suffering that follows, the idea being to persuade you to “forgive” those people and thus let go of your anger. To this end, they espouse all kinds of intellectually dishonest strategies, such as the old “oh come on everyone does that from time to time” excuse, or accusing people suffering real hardship of “wallowing in self-pity”.
The problem is that, sometimes, people really are just assholes and you know damn well that you would never treat people the way they do. So the idea that what they did was not a big deal doesn’t wash, and nor does the suggestion that “Everyone(TM)” does this.
Stoicism shows us that another way is possible. You can recognise that what someone did to you was unjust and inexcusable but nonetheless make the *strategic* decision not to cripple yourself by dwelling on it.

Yes this is very true and a very accurate assessment of stoicism.
