Almost every year of James Harden's career features a "what if" to make his whole career a gigantic "what if". For instance, 1. What if James Harden decided to take a pay cut to stay in Oklahoma City seeing the potential future success of a young Big 3 of Westbrook, Durant, and Harden? 2. What if James Harden was never traded from Oklahoma City to continue to play alongside Russell Westbrook and Kevin Durant on the Thunder? 3. What if Jeremy Lin panned out in Houston so that Lin and Harden becomes Houston's backcourt of the future? 4. What if Dwight Howard was his Orlando Magic self when Dwight Howard went to the Rockets to pair up with James Harden? 5. What if Damian Lillard's game winner to beat James Harden's Rockets in the first-round series of the 2014 NBA Playoffs missed? 6. What if James Harden was able to get past Manu Ginobili in Game 5 of the 2017 Western Conference Semifinals against the Spurs so Ginobili couldn't block his shot? 7. What if Chris Paul had not landed awkwardly to get hurt during Game 5 of the 2018 Western Conference Finals as James Harden's Rockets were going up 3-2 against GS? 8. What if James Harden's Rockets hadn't missed 27 consecutive threes in Game 7 at home in the 2018 Western Conference Finals versus Golden State? 9. What if the Rockets never traded for Russell Westbrook from the Thunder to be what would become Harden's final co-star in Houston? 10. What if Clint Capela was never traded from Houston, given he paired well with James Harden when they played with each other in Houston despite the fit with Westbrook? 11. What if the 76ers initially traded for James Harden in 2021 before the Brooklyn Nets traded for James Harden prior to Harden evenutally being traded to the 76ers in 2022? 12. What if Kyrie Irving had not gotten hurt during the Eastern Conference Semifinals against the Milwaukee Bucks in 2021? 13. What if Kevin Durant's toe was behind the line in Game 7 of the Eastern Conference Semifinals to beat the Bucks in 2021 so that Harden and the Nets get to the ECF? 14. What if James Harden had not quietly grown frustrated in Brooklyn during the 2021-22 NBA season? 15. What if James Harden, Kyrie Irving, and Kevin Durant played more than 16 games together for the Nets when they were on the same team together? Nearly every year is another "what if" in the career of James Harden, each in its own unique manner.
Much love from Australia 🇦🇺 Your content’s absolutely incredible man. How you don’t have a million subscribers I’ll never understand. But I’m subbed, got notifications on, click like on every video and have watched every single thing you’ve ever posted. Twice. Keep up the great work and it’ll all pay off.
Another excellent examination into an intriguing & intricate NBA historical concept. Well done! Personally, I think while there's been many unfortunate incidents that have plagued Harden's postseason success, there's a glaring consistency that was somewhat overlooked here: the man himself. Go back and look at his performance in series deciding games. He completely disappeared in about half of them and actually set the turnovers in a game record in another! Up until the last few years, he was also a complete matador on defense on top of that. His brand of basketball in Houston was not really conducive to winning *playoff* basketball, but again, some of *if not the majority of* that blame can be shared by D'Antoni & Morey, as when he went to the Nets, Harden's game flowed perfectly into what was needed there with two all-world offensive talents sharing the court. I was a huge doubter in the Brooklyn thing, and Harden was a huge part of that going in. He quite quickly quieted my doubts, but the biggest part of that was Kyrie, aka half-man, half a season himself. At the end of the day, I'm not sure I've seen five more brilliant offensive players than James Harden and it's going to be a damn shame if he goes into the annals of hoops history as a "what if" guy. I'm rooting for him to turn the narrative around. Video idea along the lines of "What If" - take a look at some of the major trades in NBA history that DIDN'T happen (like Barkley to the Lakers, Jordan & Drexler to the Rockets, etc).
You’re absolutely right. My motivation for making this video was to investigate the crazy extenuating circumstances around Harden in his career… but at the end of the day, if he’s better in certain moments, he could’ve changed the narrative himself!
I always think CP3 is the biggest what if. The trade denial, injured in Conference Finals twice, New Orleans got a team again and it included Anthony Davis. Plus OKC was kind of good and definitely had potential
I don't think it's a what if I think he goes into the conversation of greatest to never get thr he does have an mvp but he so far can't get to the promise land
all ima say is Chris Paul, Joel Embiid, Kawhi Leonard are the big viruses in harden's career all he needed from them.....is just availability during postseason
Dude has been the most overrated player in the last 6-7 years.. even more so than Russ. He is better than Russ, no doubt, but he is playing so poor rn; there’s not much of a difference. Averaging 20 ppg on 41 and 32% from the field and 3.. what’s sad is he only has had 1 stretch averaging over 45% from the field, and that was his time w Brooklyn last yr. let’s plz stop calling dude a superstar, which he’s never been bc he chokes every playoffs. Paul George is prob my fav player, but he’s on that same level as harden. A top tier star.. but there’s only 5 superstars. Lebron, KD, Steph, Giannis, and Kawhai.
Agreed. I will never respect his game. Can't stand players who play no defense and just jack up way to many 3s. He's nothing more than a poor man's Mitch Richmond.
