Using Tool Grid to Organize 3,000 Hand Tools in My Home Garage

- I have every tool that Sonic makes, but unfortunately they have just been laying in my Saber cabinet drawers. I bought all of the tools to use as a test for how to organize them using the Tool Grid organization system but hadn't gotten around to doing it just yet. The OG Facebook Group Moderators were in town last weekend and agreed to help me take on the project.

I bought 4 sets off of the MAC truck almost a month ago now. I have spent hundreds if not thousands on tool organization over the years. What I just replaced was a full billet machined set up for socket organization. This is hands down the best set up I have found for a heavy workflow professional mechanic. This even beats the foam inlays for aviation imo.
Cripes, I own half that and have been working on German cars for almost 30 years, for a living. Talk about rolling out the red carpet for your visiting mechanics
Me too, audi has been my life for years now. I'm pretty interested in this grid system
Thanks Matt, I just had a good 30minute snooze very therapeutic.👍
haha! Only at Obsessed Garage do you have a team of people working on aligning tools in drawers. Love it.
Boom!
Epic use of toolgrid. This project definitely shows where toolgrid could create some new holders such as crowfoot. I did like the use toolgrid cam holders to hold really large wrenches that don’t fit in the toolgrid wrench holders. Also the use of toolgrid containers to hold milwaukee drill bits and accessories rather than keeping them in their case taking up space and taking longer to access.
I don't know I have looked at organizer over the years and I'm a fan of foam over anything else.. much quieter and keeps things in place better. I know it probably wasn't available for your set up unless it was fully custom.
Jesus man, just watching simple videos like this or your car washing videos are just so enjoyable to watch. Keep doing your thing boss!
Love the layouts and great job organizing everything. And awesome tool collection!
Can’t wait to see when you setup the buyback program so I can jump into this system to go with my current foam inserts. Thank you!
You are very fortunate to be able to afford this amount of tools. Some very good mechanics work their entire lives and don't have that many tools.
ye but they only buy the tools they need and will use :-))
First, it's highly unlikely that he paid full retail for everything in there and second, it's all a tax write-off for the business. By no means am I being negative, I love the videos.
@@Valkyrie1911 This type of conspicuous wealth makes me cringe.
Well, you will use 30 or 40 of these, but as marketing strategy it is genious, Awesome !
As a shop owner with toolboxes full of tools, I can say this is hands down the best setup I have seen. I have looked at foam, unless you have tools from a single manufacturer you will be tracing and cutting for a long time, and there is so much wasted space.
While this is also a time consuming project, the end result are great. I bought a good start, and just placed another order to continue the organization.
It is well worth getting the membership to Obsessed garage, for the shipping and discount, so thank you for taking care of the people that follow you.
I went with this. Was very easy to do and looks awesome
Great post and very detailed shoot. I'm glad I found the video cause I work so much better when everything has a place. I might change my mind down the road although just my two cents it's almost too organized " is that possible" bottom line I truly appreciate the insight and thank you for your time..
And I thought I was ate up with tool organization, I feel like a Rookie compared to what you have done. Amazing, I love it. Congrats.
Thanks for sharing.
This looks amazing!!!!!
Thank you
FYI TGP 4 Grid Panels in Saber only need to be cut once if you never will need to get them out. I cut the depth 19-1/4 and leave the 26" side alone. its is tight and takes a little to get them in but they are super tight in the bottom and do not move at all. This stuff is really cool i mean i fit just about every thing i had into 12 drawers! (6-shallow 6-deep)
Inspiration. Inspiration. Amazing work Matt. One day I hope to have a similar setup. Maybe with just one Porsche and few Ducati’s. 😋
I hope Matt’s son is stoked for this some day! Haha!!
I would get one full drawer of just 10mm sockets hahaha
Incredible
IMHO with all of that drawer space it would be hard to find the right drawer when looking for what you need.
I have the HF tool boxes and I labeled each drawer so I know where my metric or standard 1/4. 3/8, of 1/2
sockets are. All of the sockets are labeled and marked also All of my drawers are labeled too i used a label
maker to mark them. HF has plastic strips and paper inserts that slide inside the handle for visibility.
I used the tool grid awesome system set up rather expensive but well worth it.
My thoughts, too.
Love it!
🙏❤️ Love from Scotland ❤️🙏
Just did 3 drawers with ToolGrid from OG, screwdrivers/pliers/ratchets, cost was $368/3: $122.66 per drawer. So even on a (much) smaller scale, $120-ish per drawer sounds accurate.
Thanks for the confirmation!
Setup looks 🔥
Damn boy! Got some tools there! :)))
Nice tools galore 👌
LOL even the hammers are spotless!
That many torque wrenches lol. I'm spoiling myself with 2
Seems like OG spec would be custom CNC milled foam inserts...
There’s always 1 guy in ever shop that has every tool.
That guy probably makes more money, has great ambition, and will be an outlier.
I don't understand all of the hate. Amazing setup.
What hate
Note to self: If you have a lot of tools, it makes some people loose their do-do.
Lol
"You loser! You are never going to use all of them!" Ha, ha... Those comments make me feel special, and makes me want to work harder.
Sort of ironic Matt hates peg board, yet he comes up with a whole beg board system inside of the drawers. 🤣 . Not hating, just find it funny. Love the videos and the organization ideas.
Matt do you have any in car/ on the go reccomendations for tool organization? I know its obsessed "garage" but what if we want to take some of the garage to go?
God those draws look beautiful!
Pretty sure those pliers with the little round jaws on the ends are for automotive hose clamps.
Tool grid….is it just me or does it feel like we’re stalling on the Georgia trip footage! Haha
💯
Matt quick question. When using a jack on a car. Like a manual jack the floor tiles..do they fail easily? I presume they would right? If your pushing 600kg on a jack in a small point the tile would fail I presume.
Iam looking to add the tool grid set up for the wrenchs how tall is the holder with a 15/16 wrench in it without the base plate ?
I so want to jump in and help with that. I hate wasted space. I am a Tool Grid Tetris Master Organizer
I don't think even some master mechanics have that many tools!
Tool Grid looks great. My only question is do you think they can work in a tool cart? What I mean by that since we use our tool cart’s to move around our hangar will the tool stay in place? I know they work in a stationary position just wondering can I use it rolling around in a tool cart. (Tool cart like the Mac maximizer tool cart.)
The fact that the dude organizing those screwdrivers didn’t face all the labels the same way is messing with my OCD.
We actually did rotate them into proper alignment, but only all the pieces had been screwed down. Couldn't leave it looking like that.
What are the little holders being used for individual screwdrivers, pliers, etc...?
Those are tip holders and handle holders.
Personally I like this organization setup but I prefer the foam. Plus, I have foam already so … 😊
"I'm gonna start doing all my car repairs at home. I'm tired of car repair bills from dealerships. So I invested 50.000 dollars in Sonic cabinets and tools."
It would be cool if we could just buy things in kits like 1 drawer at a time.
There are at least two other online retailers that have better prices (especially on the boards), free shipping, and sell kits. National tool warehouse and fat monkey tools.
is there any usa made tools in there?
Meet and greet butttttttt. 😂
Cool idea, but not always the most efficient use of space. For example, a regular wrench rack is far more space efficient and still completely organized.
Wrench racks would take up way more space than how his wrench drawers are setup.
@@Patrick94GSR No, not even close. You can put wrench racks tightly together side by side if you alternate their direction.
I see in your garage you have varying configuration of the Saber cabinets; a majority "floating" and some just laying flat on top of the Swisstrax flooring. If I was to use the leveling feet that come with Saber cabinets will the Swisstrax flooring support the cabinets on their feet without bowing, cracking, etc.? Thanks!
You would want to cut out that area where the foot contacts the floor. It will settle and bow the tile.
@@ObsessedGarage Many thanks for that suggestion!
@@ObsessedGarage Sorry I forgot to ask a part II to same question - if I did not use the feet and lay cabinets flat on top of Swisstrax, will that be fine?
wow 3000 tools are they all sonic ? the other video was 1850 tools that one cost 70,000$ how much would 3000 tools cost if all sonic ?
You could just cut the grid into two pieces and then drop them in the drawer.
Should be called " Expensive Garage" well I guess that's what I can call my garage 🤣 nice stuff though. You're getting me in trouble with my wife btw lol
Time to clean that OG HQ door. 😅
If only they had access to some cleaning products.
Tool Grid to me just doesn’t look as clean as foam…. But that’s why there are different flavors of ice cream.
I would use Tool Grid for misc stuff. Which is 50% of what I use (air tools, dremel accessories, etc)
How many torque wrenches does one man need anyway?
I'd say, at least 3-4.
But man, he got the whole set lol
@@j.rjunior5584 Pretty sure he's got at least two of each...maybe more.
What toolboxes/cabineys are those good sir?
Sonic
That’s a lot of work what if I want to reorganize my tools ?
Tool Grid is completely modular in design. If you want to put something in another spot, just move them.
I saw the $3500 number and though, huh that seems manageable for all those tools....then I realized that was just for the plastic tool holders. lol. Yikes. What do all the tools cost? 35K?
Probably more like $350k. I've got $100k in tools as a 20 year auto dealer tech, and it almost all fits in one 11 foot long tool box.
Spent most of the video shaking my head and wondering why.... I know its product you sell, but you're never going to use 95% of these tools.
Everyone of us would...if we could...
@@viggenz24 I would buy as I need if I had all the money in the world, it's just too much and too much clutter. It's a waste of money no matter how much money you have.
@@Bweanlsh not when you want to show whats available out there
no one gets mad at home depot or autozone having tons of stuff to show and sell
tell me what is the difference
@@bekiro28 well perhaps if he's going to do a full run down of every tool then fair enough but at the moment he's only showing the organisation system
@@Bweanlsh keep on following closely
The only issue I see with this is the lack of labeling on the sockets since they just get covered up
Tool Grid has a labeling system to keep track of everything.
obsessedgarage.com/products/tool-grid-identification-labels
@@ObsessedGarage yes but it is beneath the socket on any sockets larger than like 15mm right?
Shouldn’t it stick through the middle of the socket with the size?
3000 tools, uses maybe 12 on a regular basis. The other 2,988 will gather dust.
Was thinking the same thing what a waste of money 😂
Conspicuous consumption
Agreed, you probably only need 4 different draws of various size and shaped tools to show the system and sell the product. I would think obsessed garage is more about simplicity, minimalism organisation and getting the best single thing of what you need and only need. At least that's my idea of an obsessed garage, no matter how neat and organised its still clutter gathering dust.
@@hmt-0764 there's no such thing as having too many tools.
All great and I love trying to keep my tools organized. But I cannot help thinking he is only going to use about 2% of all of those tools.
I’ll use more than that, but what is your point?
where can i get that tool grid?
You can find all of the parts here:
www.obsessedgarage.com/collections/tool-grid
Someone must have a good memory here. I'd spend half my time opening and closing...
what was the cost of the tool?
Ones of dollars.
Hillarious 😂👍
More tools then actual mechanics who make a living off them have, 3/4” stuff is such a waste of money along with 90% of that stuff just for oil changes and tightening lug nuts
Not the point but i do agree.
Matt makes a living off tools as well.
Do you skip 3/4 and go straight to 1 inch? Sometimes we use 3/4 drive so much that 1/2 drive feels like 3/8.
Mistake not having drawers that are wide enough.. A mechanic would be able to tell instantly.
You have tools for any kind of work on cars, but no lift. As is you can't even make an oilchange in that home garage. Get a lift in there, Matt!
Yeah...that's a good point. I'll get one.
Two words Screw that 😆
You lost me at not knowing what the tools are used for 🤦🏻♂️
Appreciate the attention to detail however
And he will use 3% of it. Going to suck when you move. Hope the next buyer wants all those tools. Looks great. Nice to show your friends . But not realistic.
Not when you (he) has a clan of servants 😂
He will never use any of them . He need husky 10 piece harry home owner rich boy set. 😂
Do you know how I got "rich?" Using tools on camera.
"I'll probably be here for a couple years at least", moves 2 months later smh
Make sure to heavily grease/oil those tools since you'll never ever use 95% of those tools. I mean, it'd be a shame to let it all rust away.
You know, I'm a mechanical engineer, I also have OCD, just like you. One of my hobbies is collecting tools I don't need, just like you (The only difference is that all of the tools I buy will get used at some point).
The thing is... You don't impress anyone with your overpriced and bought shit, start using your tools and make some decent toolholders all by yourself for the tools that you'll actually use. Making your own is extremely satisfying since you can make it exactly as you need or want it to function and look, while that overpriced bought shit never looks good, is using 5x the space that is needed and still doesn't work as easy als self-made holders.
Why don't you send me a photo of how the stuff you made looks. That might help me.
@@ObsessedGarage very kind response to a cranky comment. you are the man mr matty
some dummies will never understand you are doing all this to show more than go
here whats available out there just picked the ones you need and only pay for the right stuff
i bought everything to show you so you only buy the shit you want out of this
the amount of information and demonstration you provide is priceless
person with a healthy brain appriciate it dummies like the one above gets jelaous and cranky
the end of the day job well done sir like always what you doing is not an easy task but some will never understand
some of the stuff i found out about and purchased from obsessed garage are the most loved and used tools in my arsenal i want to thank you again for those item
Who hurt you?
Am I really watching a guy open and close drawers?
So many tools, are you are mechanic? 😂 if not what's the point of having so many tools and not putting them to use
To demonstrate what is possible for those that would use all those tools.
He's in the business of organizaiton, detailing, and dialing in garages just to name a few. Why not have a showroom to help show his customers whats possible?
@@Gbeard94 3500 dollars just for show I'm a mechanic i know we don't use that many tools
Because he’s a dealer for all that stuff. The tools, the cabinets, the tool grid. That’s why he has it all. Not that hard to understand.
what a colossal waste of time, space and money.
the way he makes money is by wasting money and he is been doing this for years so get use to it :)
Why is this so hard for people to understand. Some people use some of these tools. Other people use others like the 3/4 stuff or whatever. He’s a dealer and sells all this stuff, so therefore owns all of it.
Waste of money
