What a debut from Sam Raimi. I was blown away the first time I saw this as a kid and it traumatized the hell out of me. A horror masterpiece.
Also, the first one is a dark, brutal and gruesome movie. "Evil Dead II" (1987) is a mixture of horror and humor. "Army of Darkness" (1992) is a fun mixture of horror, comedy, action and fantasy movies. The entire "Evil Dead Trilogy" is one of the best movie trilogies out there and I can't wait for you guys to react to the entire trilogy.

One Hundred Percent!! This movie was an absolute masterpiece of film and horror when it came out. I was a kid getting psyched out by this the first time along with an older brother, and it only outdid itself with Raimi in the sequel, which only highlighted Bruce Campbell's status as "King" and the chosen one of the prophecy.

This movie is proof that sheer ingenuity when it comes to filmmaking is second to none in making a great movie. Even the final shot is a camera on a bike pedaling towards Bruce Campbell with a sound effect laid over it in post production and it really feels like a monster roaring through the woods.

@@christinaflagiello3930Yeah, the series was awesome! It's too bad Starz cancelled it after the third season. It was a crappy combination of not enough promotion, too many people pirating it instead of watching it for the ratings and internal infighting with the two main creators of the show with one of them leaving after the second season. Apparently, one of the creatives wanted a more serious tone while the other one wanted a more of a comedic tone and Bruce Campbell and the rest of the cast and crew being caught the middle. It's such a damn shame it went down the way it did, but at least we got the three incredible seasons and I'm just grateful for that.

Army of Darkness is actually the third movie but a direct sequel to this movie. The third movie is a lighter comedic sequel. Bruce Campbell is funny as hell as Ash in that. Bruce Campbell was in all three of the original Spider-Man trilogy movies. Playing three different characters in each in small supporting roles. He was also in Dr.Strange II at least in the end as Ash too. He plays a hot dog vendor in NYC near Dr.Strange's HQs.

This is my favourite horror movie. The effects, the sound design, the camera work, and Baby Bruce. Linda's iconic "We're gonna get you.." is on par with Nightmare on Elm Street's "1, 2, Freddy's coming for you..". The fact this was basically a low-budget student film is astonishing, considering its execution and cultural impact on the film industry, creating the whole "cabin in the woods" horror genre. FYI, Part 2 has a 10 minute recap of part 1 as the opening, but due to Sam Raimi not having rights to footage from the 1st film, they had to reshoot, recast, and simplify the storyline so people who hadn't seen it could catch up. So that will assuage your confusion. I make sense of it by thinking of it as Ash having a nightmare about the events of the first film (up until he wakes up in part 2 in the chair), and dreams are often not a faithful retelling of events. The fact that Ash's mind is also greatly impacted makes him a semi-unreliable narrator, so that works too. Ash is one of the best final girls ever. Imagine having to kill your best friend, sister, and girlfriend? His character development throughout the franchise is iconic.

This movie was actually filmed in Morristown, Tennessee. I live in Northwest TN, so it's quite a drive from me. A little over 6 hours. Bruce Campbell was asked about how he felt about fans saying they wanted to go to the location where it was filmed and see the cabin (which is still there). He said, "I told them those people dont play in Tennessee and you dont need to be trespassing on anyone's land. They actually own guns there." LOL Great reaction. I've read Bruce Campbell's autobiography: 'If Chins Could Kill: Confessions of a B Movie Actor' where he talks in depths about his experiences working with Sam Raimi. They were still students when they began to make films. It's an entertaining read. They had a miserable experience filming Evil Dead. They decided to make it in Tennessee because they thought it would be warmer than Michigan. It turns out Tennessee happened to have a very cold winter that year. There was just a tremendous will behind the scenes to finish this film and get it into theatres.

The lead guy in this movie invented the camera to run through the woods. Which is now used in a lot of movies.

The "heavy" car is a '73 Delta 88 that has appeared in virtually every Raimi movie ever made...even the western "The Quick And The Dead" where a covered wagon was built over it's chassis. It was in all Evil Dead movies, Raimi's three Spiderman movies (uncle Ben's car), Darkman,...all the way up to the latest Doctor Strange movie.

Sumer (where the Sumerians come from) was in the Middle East, in what is now Iraq. It is one of the first human civilizations, one of the first that could write. The guy who owned the cabin was a researcher who brought the book (and the demons) to Tennessee.

You're in for a treat when you get to Evil Dead 2 and its direct sequel Army of Darkness. Evil Dead 2 isn't really a sequel but rather more of a Re-Imagining of the 1st Evil Dead. Evil Dead 2 is in my Top 5 favorite Horror movies.

Sam Raimi liked putting his friends in movies, often cameos. Spiderman had Bruce (who was also in his Hercules/ Xena series as king of thieves), Ted (his brother who was also the old lady in the cellar, also played Joxor from Hercules/Xena, and cameoed in Spiderman), Lucy Lawless played Xena also cameoed in Spiderman as the punk rock girl interviewed "A Spiderman, imagine all those arms around you". By the way, they made "The Evil Dead... The Musical".

"Within the Woods" is the short film that inspired this take on the series. Its a rare film which I proudly own on dvd, but if you are interested its free to stream here on RUclips.
The film itself is a reimagining of the 1970 film, Equinox. The film was directed by Jack Woods, and starring Edward Connell, Barbara Hewitt, Frank Bonner and Robin Christopher. Though uncredited, producer Dennis Muren also served as a second director. The film focuses on four young people picnicking in a California canyon, where they stumble upon an ancient book used to conjure demons; soon they unleash a plethora of evil creatures which doesn't has the darkness of Raimi's Evil Dead films you can totally see the inspiration from the Book of the Dead, the stop motion, the demon creatures of the woods, and more!!

In case you didn't know, the Raimi's were friends with Bruce so when Hercules: The Legendary Journeys (Joxer the Mighty, a recurring character, played by Ted Raimi) and Xena came along, they found a recurring role for Bruce.
He's also had cameos in all of the Marvel movies where one of the Raimi's was director (Spiderman, Doctor Strange and the Multiverse of Madness...).
He had a supporting role in the USA network series, "Burn Notice".

Bruce Campbell said in an interview, that the scene in the second movie similar to this one's ending is infact where things pick back up.
