  • Red dot sights are the answer to so many firearm-topping needs. Pistol - red dot. AR for close-to-medium engagements - red dot. Shotgun - red dot. Double rifle - red dot. Bolt gun for driven game or dense forest - red dot. Fast, light, compact, and effective, red dots provide the ability to stay target focused for optimal performance down range. Mark Boardman and Adam Maxwell (Vortex Law Enforcement Sales/Competitive Shooter) talk red dots, including an at-press-time new model, until they are blue in the face.

Vortex hand an episode a couple years ago when they interviewed two professional long-range shooters and asked them both, if you could only have one magnification on an optic, what would it be? Both professional long-range shooters chose 1x and 2x as their optic, because you can still hit targets out to a couple hundred yards with 1x and 2x. I'm not against LPVO's, but as an RSO for a Black Rifle League I've seen several shooters going from a red dot on their long gun to an LPVO, and then back to a red dot again for faster target acquisitions at closer range targets.

Amen bro. I had a couple grand to put into an optic last year to almost complete my dream 14.5 build. I wanted an LPVO for the longest time and last minutely changed my mind. Put an NF 2.5-20x50 f1 on it over a trijicon sco 1-8. I used a badger comm mount and now I’m saving for a sig Romeo 4XTPro for a piggyback. The lack of parallax for long range and how much better I am with a red dot over an optic made me come to the conclusion going with an MPvO and an offset red dot is the best of all worlds. LPVO is amazing and great but it’s too many compromises. I want something that’s purposed for both

This is timely. I just bought a Ruger Max 9 that has the factory mounted Crimson Trace red dot and a Rossi RS22 that I put a red dot on.

I have a Max 9 with the CT red dot. Didn't like the blacked out rear sight, I replaced it with a tritium sight.
      Was raised on iron sights,
Ended up taking off the red dot until I have more time to train with it.

Born in 1959, I wouldn’t have thought of the video game influence but it makes perfect sense. I wish that you addressed LED vs. holographic vs. prism systems.
Is anyone using a red dot for sporting clays, trap or skeet shooting? I have a red dot on 2 of 3 lever action rifles chambered in .30-30, so I’m not opposed to the technology. However, I’m having trouble imagining swinging through a difficult waterfowl shot using one.

I asked a guy the same thing a few months back, who claimed he had one and loved it. But I imagine it would cover the target in some cases when leading birds, but I am curious as to how it would be. Dove is about the only bird I hunt though.

    • @baker90338
      @baker90338 5 месяцев назад +1

@@jakemarley5783you have the ability to lose them just as much as a bead. However with a red dot, I’d argue that if you use both eyes open, you’ll see the red dot in your vision of both eyes combined. Look at the bindon aiming concept some time to kinda get the idea I’m trying to explain to an extent.
As for the way you’d use it, I’d explain it as basically “if the bird is covered with the dot, that is a guaranteed hit” assuming usage of bird shot. That said, I can’t hit clays at a skeet range either way using a CZ over under, so I’m probably not qualified to talk on the subject. But I mostly learned this from a guy whom did 3 gun with a saiga.

I agree with the benefits of a red dot on pistol. I think if you can afford it then you should have one. At the same time the misinformation around red dots vs iron sights is ridiculous and is hurting the evolution of the firearms community. The smallest iron sights being 69 moa according to this individual is just dumb and incorrect. The ring in a holographic sight is 68 moa and there’s no way that is smaller than even basic iron sights on pistols. Stop with the lies and just stick to the facts. The facts are good enough to justify its existence.

If you took the glass from the red dot out and painted or etched a dot on it then made a simple mount for it would it work the same way as a red dot? Like a red dot without any batteries. You could have a piece of glass with a fiber optic or tritium dot instead of using batteries

69 MOA front sight post!? Check your math. Your standard front sight post is about 10-12 MOA held at a basic arms length. Obviously many factors, but it’s no where close to 69 MOA.

So, I received a a red dot, somewhat similar to this defender you are showing...
However, it has noticeable, cursor drift relative to face /eye position...
    Is that parallax?
Inside 50 to 100 meters(yards), not even at long range.
Does a higher quality optic, eliminate that problem?
Point would be to have a stable Point of aim, not a wandering cursor...

I've never been a big fan of Red Dot's. Maybe it's because I bought an Aimpoint back in 1974 ( their first commercial model when it first came out and it kept shutting off from the recoil with every shot). Not much recoil with a .22 L.R. Rifle. Right after I got it I joined they Army not realizing the sight had a problem. 3years later I got my Discharge in Oct 1977 and found out my Warranty wasn't worth the paper it was written on .Bad Switch . Now Red Dots are so expensive I can buy a new Gun for Less. and Iron Sights have never let me down in over 50 yrs. I do have a Vortex Scope on my .30-06 Rem.and it does well for me.

Lots of features that make it competitive with the major players. So why go with the DPP footprint instead of the RMR footprint which is ostensibly the industry standard? Even if you do believe that modular mounting on pistol slides are the future, a large share of the current market is RMR cut. Was that an intentional design choice or some byproduct of the design?

So, video games gave us one thing...
    Infinite potential testing and variety...
Very very few iron sight packages, 'compete' with the upgrade... The precision, of the red dot.
    Its almost universally superior.
And that translates to the real world.
That said... Optics need to be calibrated well, either way,
And dead batteries can be a problem...

In most ways. Unless if it’s a night vision setup (where the optic might be too bright, or aiming might be impossible with the optic’s eyebox) , or if the laser is there for intimidation (such as a prison tower sniper) the red dot sight has basically beat the laser.

Whereas, you have grandpa sticking with tried and true, 40 years of his tradition...
Especially If like mine, yours served in military for any Amount of time. (29 years, international postings)
They know what worked well for them and don't need to change, especially when it comes to hunting deer.
If it does the job. Why change?
    But.
Training a new generation of soldiers, why not begin with the best available at the time.
Why handicap your force, with outdated tekk.
30-06, .308, were revolutionary... In their own time.
Lever action, was revolutionary. Bolt action, reliability was revolutionary.
It is not the Supreme entity for all combat applications, now.

Electronics fail iron sights don't, generally speaking. I think it's bad to start with red dots. I also think it's bad to equip guns of any kind with something that can permanently fail. The fundamentals are important because they are fundamental to your skill as a expert marksman.

    • @jonathanbennison9220
      @jonathanbennison9220 5 месяцев назад

      @@nadajohn
      Fair,
Practice with old-school, on principal, but.
Iron sights are not themselves, inherently fundamental to marksmanship.
      Aim is.
Any one type of aim aid, sight aid, is not.
      Its certainly traditional,
      But so is a musket.
And you don't need to practice with a musket to become effective with a Glock or a Tikka.
That said, if you learn fundamental principals, if you study the ballistic process to understand the forces at work, the trajectory, etc...
You should be able to transfer your fundamentals, to something like a musket with some practice.
For example, I grew up a city kid loving summer camp archery.
Lived in south Texas in Jr high and didn't get to shoot. Played wide receiver and half back. But didn't get to shoot.
Joined Canadian Armed forces at 18.
Found that my archery principals, transferred to rifle marksmanship.
Totally different tool of course, but ballistics, aim, adjustments, etc,
      All the fundamentals apply.
Position is unique. Ammunition is unique.
Assembly of an assault rifle, seems complex, at first.
      But the fundamental principles transfer.
I don't mind having iron sights, for an emergency 8f zombies won't stop long enough to swap a new battery or replace a broken scope.
      But.
I prefer a modern rifle to a musket,
And I prefer modern superior optics to old school iron sights.
