Went out to Lake Koshkonong State Wildlife Area K-9851 (now US-9851) to do a quick POTA activation from the car using my Icom IC-7200, Hustler 40 Meter Super Resonator and Bioenno 15ah LiFePo4 Battery, but the band conditions were a bit rough, not to mention the local noise on the band. Not sure what exactly what was causing the ticking noise but it was really a bummer. Next time I'll give a few other bands a try instead, but I still ended up with 11 QSOs on 40 meters.

HEY KEVIN! Usually I run the heat on high until I get to the park, while I setup and then cut the engine before I activate from inside my car. I was only out once when it was REALLY cold & windy this winter. Other times it was semi cool or actually warm enough to be outside... 73!

There have been a few times when it was really cold I had to start the car back up to warm up during an activation this winter, most of the times I do the same thing and just blast the heat for the 10 minutes or so before I get to the site and hope it keeps me warm lol! 73! -Kevin

Kevin: In cold weather I use a tri mag mount with the Hustler 22” MO4 with either a hustler resonator or a ham stick and operate from my vehicle. I’m into being comfortable. I don’t string wire antennas that can take some time in the cold. I’m more interested in spending time operating than I am using using time to set up in cold temperatures. I try to streamline everything to be as easy as possible when I activate a park. POTA on.

I'm the exact same way! Thanks for watching and commenting. I haven't tried the 22" Hustler Mast, do you like the performance of it. I've been using the 54" fiberglass mast for quite some time now with great success. 73! -Kevin

The 7200 looks cool. I don't think I've seen one in person before.

It's a great radio, although heavy! It is pretty no frills but honestly when doing POTA I just need something that I can count on working and the 7200 does that. Plus the built in sound card allows for easy one plug CAT control and digital operation which makes things so much easier. 73! -Kevin

I do quarter wave chameleon telescoping pole vertical or emcomm2 dipole into 25 ft cable and Yaesu FT-710 AES. I. Also use Life04 30 amp battery for a whole day use

Thanks for watching! The telescoping whip vertical is one antenna that I have not experimented with for POTA, except for the Buddistick Pro which is a coil loaded vertical. 73! -Kevin

Even though its huge, its been a great radio for me. I ended up on it by accident, I met up with a local ham to buy an FT-857 and he asked if I was also interested in his 7200, I've since sold the 857 but have kept the 7200.. 73! -Kevin

Love my 7200. Not fancy, but it works. Plus it's water resistant, a nice plus for outdoor POTA activators. k4jdf

I think what sold me on the 7200 was the built in sound card and cat control over a single USB, plus it is super rugged. It's heavy but for setup in the car or areas near the car park it works great. Now lugging it around in my backpack thats another story hihi. 73! -Kevin

I notice no difference between the 22 inch and the 54 inch mast

Thats good to know! The 54 is nice and easy to use but it sure isn't very portable when paired up with the resonators. I might have to look at getting one of the shorter masts and giving it a go. 73! -Kevin
