Basil Rathbone was probably the best fencer in Hollywood during this era. Tyrone Power was also well qualified. Their duel in this movie is classic and holds up well even today because it was performed without stunt doubles.
BASIL RATHBONE was a magnificent fencer.
I fenced for about a year before enlisting in the Air Force and then picked it up again after 15 years in government service.
My fencing coach afterward was a master fencer and had just missed out on the US Olympic team. He told me that Basil Rathbone could well have been one of the finest fencers in the world for decades had he not chosen to have been an actor.
During one of his tours in later life, to paraphrase, he said I could have cut Errol Flynn to ribbons any time I wanted!
He was so witty and charming.
He's my favorite cinematic Sherlock Holmes, edging out RDJ slightly.
Great comment!
Basil Rathbone taught both Errol Flyn and Tyrone Power to fence and said that Tyrone Power was an excellent swordsman.
@justthink5854 Yeah, I've seen footage of that somewhere in my travels.
Great comment!

Basil Rathbone had the most magnificent facial profile I’ve ever seen.
What a timeless classic masterpiece...This is the sixth time I'm watching it in my life...That scene where he jumps off a bridge on his horse and escapes through a barrage of bullets made my day when I first watched it when I was 6, I've just turned 45 and it hasn't changed 🙂🙂
The best Zorro film ever made. Great cast.
The only one where Diego's mother is alive.
I was going to make a comment saying the same thing, you beat me to it!
Diego's mother is alive in the '74 , Frank Langella film.
@@spikespa5208 And played by 1940s sexpot Yvonne DeCarlo.
I first saw this almost 60 years ago. What a fun movie that has held up remarkably well!!!!!!!!!!! Can't wait to show my grand girls!
I watched thus for the first time as a 16 year old. Normally old movies like this i would finf boring but its one of my favourites. What a movie
I own the color version. One of mom’s favorite as well as Errol Flynn’s Robin Hood. The dancing, fencing and horse riding. Perfect for families. Thank you so much for sharing ❤
Your Mom has good Taste
I knew an IBM engineer who served in the Marines during WW2. He told me that Tyrone Power was always considered to his fellow Marines and they all liked him.
Do you mean considerate?
@@jaengen Thank you -- I was always bad at spelling in school and still am as you can see.
Tyrone Power is one of the great actors of old Hollywood. It is a shame that he has largely been forgotten and is not thought of as one of the greatest stars from the Golden Age of motion pictures. He was laid to rest with full military honors. In other words, he was a genuine hero who served his country during WWII. Which would have been the height of his movie career.
Rest in peace, Tyrone Power. A true icon to the motion picture industry as well as an officer a gentleman.
Well said! Excellent comment! I love Tyrone Power always and forever! ❤
"THE ABSOLUTELY" best/GREATEST(!!!) sword-fight scene in Hollywood film history!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Basil Rathbone, A REAL-LIFE FENCER/considered the best in Hollywood, taught BOTH Tyrone Power AND Errol Flynn how to PROPERLY sword-fight; it's athame that he was NOT allowed /permitted to play a sword-fighting hero/good-guy.
Well, Basil's reward (not that much) later on was he ended up portraying the most memorable Sherlock Holmes pre Benedict Cumberbatch...something he was justly proud of.
@@jasonstegallco.960I think his Sherlock Holmes is superior to Ben's. Basil Rathbone informed every iteration of Holmes afterward, as far as I'm concerned.
One of my all time favorite films with two of my favorite actors - Tyrone Power and Linda Darnell (with whom I shared a birthday).
I loved this film - I’m always impressed with the high caliber of the films of the past - they don’t need all the special effects, violence, and excess. They have a special quality because there were such amazingly talented actors and directors.
This is the second film but in much better quality than the other one here on RUclips. Thank you 😊
They are distorted.
@@josephvitielo1693 No! Go watch the other one on RUclips and I promise you won’t watch 5 minutes.
59:07 -- "My dear Esteban is forever thrusting at this and that." Then Don Diego immediately gives a sidewards glance at Inez.
I almost missed the implication: The alcalde's wife is one of the targets that Esteban is forever "thrusting" at.
What a great, subtle touch!
That swordfight is epic. No speeded up action. No doubles. The editing is on the dot and that thrust into the chest! Very very good and downplayed but that is exactly why it feels real. Perfection!
Linda Darnell..."...what Nature intended". Quote from another of her movies...and all about Simona too.
Linda too young for the role, at a still tender age of 17.

Great movie. See The Scarlet Pimpernel for an earlier story with a similar character (played by Leslie Howard). Sometimes called the first superhero.
"The Scarlet Puh-Puh-Pumpernickle!"
California was named supposedly by the Conquistadors who came up Baja California after crossing the Sea of Cortez into California believing possibly that California was an island. As legend goes the Conquistadors named it after a mythical island of giant amazons (tall warrior like women) ( not yet named) . That is one premise. 😊
Gee TYRONE POWER isn't Bad this is only the 2 film I've seen him in, forgotten the other..He's more physical then i remember😮

Black and white, but with sound!

Zorro crossing the foot bridge at a full run on horse back is one of the most unsung stunts ever.
That and getting the horse to jump into the water from that height! No CGI there … that seemed real.
It's at 38:32 and the bridge jump is at 39:01
No words, this movie represents the values and origins of this beloved character ZORRO and Tyrone Power was amazing on this role!!!!
I totally agree, also it is incredible to see how respectful, polite and educated with manners people were in that era, something most people are lacking today specially the young crowd!
❤whoa at that time I was not born yet ❤
I've got to say, this is even better seeing it again this morning and paying attention more closely, and the fencing is even better than I first noted.
Rathbone and Power are fantastic in their duel, though, were it a real fencing match, Rathbone would've run Power through, without question.
Also, Basil Rathbone was a war veteran, which not many people know.
He served as an Intelligence Officer during World War I, and was twice the Fencing Champion of the British Army, which during World War I was nothing short of phenomenal!
Rathbone taught both Tyrone Power and Errol Flynn to fence in their films.
There's far more to Basil Rathbone than most people know. He was quite a man and actor. He's also another hero of mine and for good reason.
Rathbone's own words, on Errol Flynn and Tyrone Power:
“Power was the most agile man with a sword I’ve ever faced before a camera. Tyrone could have fenced Errol Flynn into a cocked hat.”
I LOVE Basil, SO versatile, AND funny, with a dead pan approach, i.e., The Court Jester.
Basil was 48 years old in this film.....but fenced like a 20 year old.
To this day he is still the best Sherlock Holmes
@brianjones7907 I'm in complete agreement with you Brian.
I think he was also the BEST ACTOR to have portrayed Holmes EVER as well. And no, Cumberbatch is NOT a BETTER ACTOR than Basil Rathbone was, not a chance.
Rathbone was able to portray such a broad range of characters over a very long career. For me too, I appreciate the fact that he brought his war time experience into his acting realm, it informed his characters.
The man was just astounding and I'm continually surprised by how he incorporated even the tiniest moments of reflection into his roles.
Great comment.
This is the first and best of all Zorro movies. Thank you Tyrone Power!
Not quite. Douglas Fairbanks did (at least) one about 20 years before this one came out.
Definitely the best!
I agree -- this is a great version of the Zorro saga ! Thoroughly enjoyable and Tyrone Power played the lead to perfection. Thank you for posting.
No one plays Zorro like Tyrone. Powor the rest are all imitators . The charisma lives on even today.
Guy William had better charisma. Tyrone Power seems too straight and stiff. Overrated because the women love his " pretty boy face.
Only Antonio Banderas
Antonio was great but I think Frank Langella came closer to Tyrone Power. I love all three!
@@greggnovotny3492 but Antonio Banderas played as Alejandro not Diego, so basically it's a different Zorro.
George Hamilton was my favorite in Zorro the gay blade!!!!
What kills me is how Powers character instantly puts on a foppish persona and starts thinking of a plan the moment he finds out what really happened and why people are afraid. You can see it in his face when he's first talking to Rathbones character.
Excellent! I noticed that as well.
THE definitive Zorro, Tyrone Power. One of a trilogy of amazing swashbucklers by him (this one, Son of Fury and Black Swan)

My Dad met Tyrone Power during WWII. My Dad was a Marine and Mr Power graciously flew Dad and several other Marines back to their base.
@JesseOaks-ef9xn What a great story!
Thank you very much for sharing it with us.
I'm a Native combat veteran and whenever I have the honor of meeting a World War II veteran, I feel privileged to shake their hand, veteran to veteran.
The people who served in that war literally SAVED THE WORLD.

Your father has my sincere admiration and gratitude for his service, not only to our country but to the world.
Again, my thanks for sharing a family story about 2 of my heroes, Tyrone Power and your father.

@ElmoUnk1953 Although I was never a United States Marine, I have nothing but respect for them.
On more than one occasion, when our team had been pinned down and close air support was unavailable, the USMC came to our rescue.

To get to CA from Spain, he would probably have to have gone south of SA. There was no Panama Canal. Must have taken several months and no pleasant journey. Another excellent adaptation of the Zorro series. This one treats the religious aspect much better than the 1974 version.
Looking at the film from 5:16, definitely via Cape Horn

Very good knowledge.
The swordsmanship fight is better than the other Zorro films I’ve watched. Also, TP is drop-dead handsome. I’ve enjoyed watching immensely. Thank you for sharing..much appreciated❤️
No wonder, Basil Rathbone was a WWI British Army intelligence officer and twice British Army fencing champion. His swordsmanship was unparallelled, not just in Hollywood. And he taught Power (as well as Errol Flynn) and had great praise for Power's swordsmanship. Stands to reason that the 2 of them is behind probably the greatest fencing scene in movie history.
@@lorindawehrly6305 My wife agrees, Tyrone Power was a very handsome guy and a better actor than he ever got credit for while living.
This is the BEST ZORRO MOVIE IN MY OPINION
Easily.
Si señor. La mejor!.
This is also my favorite Zorro film as well, but I must say the 1920 silent film 'The Mark of Zorro with Tyrone Power Sr. is just as good. I saw that at a special showing a few years back at the Arlington Theater just nearby where I reside in my hometown of Santa Barbara, California. Also Disney's TV series 'Zorro' (short lived 1957-1959) with Guy Williams as Don Diego Vega/Zorro is good as well. For me by far the 1920, 1940 and Disney's TV series are the best films of 'Zorro.'
Yup. Back in the day when movies relied more on script and acting and less on explosions and mayhem.
@@spikespa5208 Quality actors, camera filming was an art form when it came down with light and shadowing when it was Black & White during the 1930s, 1940s and 1950s. Even with many of the B-films.

The tv series with guy williams was very good too one of my favorites as a kid
I also liked Guy Williams charisma.
I’ve always been a big fan of Tyrone Power in High Seas swashbucklers. This was a swashbuckler of another sort, still a stellar performance, nonetheless. My gratitude 🙏🏽
THE BLACK SWAN is my favorite Tyrone Power swashbuckling film because it also has the amazing Maureen O'Hara playing his love interest, and they make quite a pair. With Ms. O'Hara being feisty as ever.
Plus, The Black Swan is filmed in color!
It's here on RUclips as well, which I'm sure you're aware.
By the way, another reason my wife and I are huge fans of Tyrone Power is that she's from his hometown of Cincinnati, and that's where we met. I was an Army brat and spent 2 years in school there, 2 important years, otherwise, I'd never have met my wife.
We were only friends back then and went off to lead our lives, only to have bumped into each other 35 years later.

Be well, blessings to you.
The curse of capistrano? Now I'm going to have to go find that. Okay back from Wikipedia that took 1 minute. 1919 novel by Johnston McCulley featuring The Character Diego Vega. First appeared as a five-part magazine serial. Cool.
Tyrone Power is splendid, Linda Darnell is beautiful, but the real hero of his film IMHO is Basil Rathbone - what a deliciously evil « bad guy »! And this from the same actor who could play Sherlock Holmes, the ultimate « good guy », as well!
Montague Love plays the father of Zorro.
Linda too young for the role, at a still tender age of 17.

The dance scene between Tyrone Power and Linda Darnell is such a beautiful scene with two of the most beautiful people ever to appear on the silver screen.
@GeneRogers-di6cl I was truly astonished to learn that Linda Darnell was a mere SEVENTEEN YEARS OLD when this film was released in 1940, which might have made her a baby of SIXTEEN while filming!
Ms. Darnell held her own filming with Tyrone Power and Basil Rathbone, even gaining 2nd billing, ABOVE Basil Rathbone!

Great film of Tyrone Power and the fantastic Basil Rathbone!
The fencing they perform in this film brings the action here to great levels.
Power was such a great actor and held his own with Rathbone here in their non-action scenes.
Linda Darnell is incredible too, both in her acting and beauty. She's younger than anyone else in the cast, at age 17, yet maintains her poise quite well.
This film holds up very well, even though it lacks the CGI special effects of today's hits, and so much the better as far as I'm concerned.
Hollywood has come to rely on computers far too much for my taste. Some actors have begun to speak out on this tactic as well.
Speaking as someone who has friends and family in the film industry, the use of CGI needs to be reined in if we are to have actors and actresses continue to provide us with performances that can bring us to our feet in applause or weep with them in sorrow.
I'm so glad this was not colorized. The black-and-white photography is sublime. Adding color would have only detracted from the stark beauty.
I haven't noticed if this film was chosen to be saved for its historical value, if not it certainly deserves it.
Blessings to you all.
I bought this FANTASTIC movie on DVD several years ago! One side of the DVD was in B&W, the other side in color! I preferred watching the B&W side MUCH more! Tyrone Power was sooo very handsome and skillfully handled the sword! Linda Darnell was so very lovely and feminine, and Basil Rathbone was just brilliant! I remember when Mr. Power died in 1959, I think, and I was very sad! But he lives on in this GEM of a movie!!!😊
@@jayonnaj18 Very well said. Tyrone Power was a fine actor and should've received far more recognition for his talent.
I WOULD agree, CGI is the down foll of acting!

Still my favorite movie of all time, and I've seen lots and lots and lots of movies! It's far from perfect, probably seems a little fake and silly in spots to younger viewers, but like other great works of art, its strengths far exceed its weaknesses. With one of the most brilliant scores ever written, classic and memorable dialog and of course the best sword fighting scene in all of cinema between the incomparable Tyrone Power and Basil Rathbone - as well as one of the most beautiful dance scenes, following the fantastic dinner scene....when I learned Ty Power wasn't even nominated for an Academy Award I've never had any use whatsoever for that bunch of phonies

the consumers should assign the awards,

Really funny, when in the cellar, where all the brandy barrells are pouring brandy all over the floor, nobody has the sense to turn them off! 🤣
Best sword fight in classic Hollywood, and possibly overall. Basil Rathbone wrote in his memoirs that Tyrone Power was the best swordsman he ever fought in his career. He said Power "Could have fenced Errol Flynn into a cocked hat",
Rathbone should know, since he taught them both. As an unparallelled master it mustve been difficult for him to find proper training partners!
If my memory serves me correctly, Power's mother, Maria, was an Olympic fencer and had taught Tyrone Power much of his fencing skills.
Fred Cavens was the choreographer for the fencing scenes and was a skilled swordsman.
His son, Alfred Cavens, doubled for Power in most of the longer shots in the climactic and memorable swordfight with Basil Rathbone.
Fred Cavens also worked with the likes of Errol Flynn and Maureen O'Hara.
Excellent. The best Zorro.
Linda Darnell was definitely one of the best and most beautiful actresses ever.
Not to sound too crass but.......hubba hubba. But a truly sad and tragic end. I was only 12 at the time but remember hearing about it, having noted her in this and a couple of other films.

Commentary from film historians indicates that while Power did MOST of the fencing duel scene as a good fencer (Rathbone in contrast was a superior trained fencer) a few camera shots with Don Diego's back to the camera were done by a stunt expert fencer. But TP did most of the duel scene.
I haven’t seen an actor fawned over in a movie; not unlike Elvis Presley movies. I guess Tyrone was very likable and easy to work with…

Linda Darnell was so beautiful. She and Tyrone Power make a lovely couple.
This film has one of Alfred Newman's best and most memorable scores. Unfortunately, the original score nor a complete re-recordng has ever been released; a shame indeed!!

This version of Zorro was wonderful I forgot how stirring violins can be in a fight scene tip if the hat to Randi Newmans father.
Bill Finger and Bob Kane were inspired to create Batman after watching the mystery-horror film The Bat Whispers (1930) and Douglas Fairbanks in The Mark of Zorro (1920). But after the Tyrone Power version of The Mark of Zorro came out in 1940, the year after Batman had first been published, they began adjusting Bruce Wayne to be more like the Tyrone Power version.

This should've been shot in color, as "The Adventures of Robin Hood" was two years earlier.
There is more contrast in black and white picturaization than colour.
Black and white does nothing to detract from this great film.
