The sheer animosity, viciousness that Donna showed to her only daughter asking if “she’s ok” when her sons, carmen anyway, asking similar questions like “are you good” etc shows how much daughters get the absolute brunt of the anger and malice from their mothers. Natalie was the most emotionally abused out of all the berzettos, and it’s disappointing how many fans don’t see that. I kinda have to disagree with the favoritism bit (at least in the show since I'm ignorant on such subjects in rl) since we open that episode with the brothers asking her not to ask that question. Then we see Carmen basically be his mom's whip boy the entire episode, obviously trying to curry favor with her through his acts of service. Up to this point in the show, i found Natalie to be too much. Too needy, too pushy, too motherly? Can't quite put my finger on it, but I didnt love her character. This episode truly did a lot for developing every character. Richie, Carmy, Sugar and Mike. I grew to love Sugar so much after this and understood why she is so anxious about her pregnancy. It also explains why her husband feels so odd - her chaotic upbringing is why shes dating such a sweet and "phony" guy. Hes nice, supportive, calm, and smiley. It's the complete opposite of what she grew up with.

This is what triggered me the most about Natalie. Growing up in a dysfunctional household, i was very much the mikey (minus the drugs) and having a natalie for a sibling where they always feel like they can fix the situation no matter how many times history dictates that it’s not gonna work can be a much more stressful job for the mikeys.
