I'm almost certain they used two drums when I saw them, with one piano less, though. And, although I agree the "hammering" of the pianos adds heft to the performance, the two drums kicking felt like you were getting punched. AND hammered. It was glorious.
I agree. So much so that I'm doing my Doctorate in Sacred Music on Nick Cave. It was approved last week. I've already sent his agent an email for an interview.
I went to bed last night and my moral code code jammed / I woke up this morning with a Frappucino in my hand! I nearly fell off my chair the first time I heard that. It made me spit my Frappucino all over my legs...
The sun is high up in the sky and I'm in my car Drifting down into the abattoir Do you see what I see, dear? The air grows heavy. I listen to your breath Entwined together in this culture of death Do you see what I see, dear? [Verse 2] Slide on over here, let me give you a squeeze To avert this unholy evolutionary trajectory Can you hear what I hear, babe? Does it make you feel afraid? Everything's dissolving, babe, according to plan The sky is on fire, the dead are heaped across the land I went to bed last night and my Moral code got jammed I woke up this morning with a Frappucino in my hand [Verse 3] I kissed you once. I kissed you again My heart it tumbled like the stock exchange Do you feel what I feel, dear? Mass extinction, darling, hypocrisy These things are not good for me Do you see what I see, dear? The line the God throws down to you and me Makes a pleasing geometry Shall we leave this place now, dear? Is there someway out of here? Verse 4] I wake with the sparrows and I hurry off to work The need for validation, babe, gone completely Berserk I wanted to be your Superman but I turned out such a Jerk I got the abattoir blues I got the abattoir blues I got the abattoir blues Right down to my shoes
I keep on being amazed at how good Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds are live. I've got the Live at Paradiso DVD and I must say I prefer several songs live. Great stuff.
This is for all you amateurs out there, the uninitiated... Learn from one of the Masters. This is exactly how you do it. This is how you Fucking ROCK!!
There is something about the simple piano chords that really makes this song powerfully melancholic. I'm really liking it. Are there any other songs by this guy that anyone recommends?
He's got all kinds of stuff, I think tender prey is a great album, but he's also got Dig Lazarus Dig, that's a PHENOMINAL and yet pretty experimental album (somehow one of his more out there and yet more accessible albums tbh, it's amazing), and other than that it really depends on what you like because his 2000s material is so different from his previous works. His music was much more punk/goth/folk prior to dig Lazarus dig, he madw some insane music in jis earlier career (just check out his first band The Birthday Party, check out their first album or their 2nd, its pretty crazy stuff. It's like avant garde noise rock/punk/Australian gothic twangy music lol. It's a pretty crazy vibe overall). His music has a strange modern vibe to it ever since dig Lazarus dig, Abbatoir blues is from his album Abbatoir blues/The Lyre of Orpheus (I believe the album right after dig Lazarus dig?), and for me I preferred dig Lazarus dig overall but the songs on Abbatoir blues can hit harder. Abbatoir blues is personally my favorite song of his but if you want another one that's sad and/or dark but still has a comforting feeling to it somehow, Lover Lover go by is an incredible track (from tender prey)
Loom of the Land Hard On For Love Let Love In Come Into My Sleep Stagger Lee Also, search for Tyler Hartfield from Western Australia performance on ABC channel 2020
Whenever I hear or see anything new about the political climate in America or see people arguing about the same old song and dance yet again, I get a healthy dose of them Abattoir Blues. And I turn up this song.
Momus has a sense of humor and is armed by an exceptional vocabulary. Pong is a great album. But I wouldn't be comparing a poetic satirist to a balladeer. Cohen and Cave operate in entirely different arenas from Momus.
@MIKEDURSTEWITZ I didn't think so but you're right! Warren, Conway and I think James... How cool. I dont think there is an instrument that Mr. Ellis can't play come to the think of it, haha!
Ok so I'm usually pretty good with the lineups since I've been a Cave fan for decades, but the three pianos got me here... I see Warren Ellis playing on the left, and Conway Savage on the piano in the back (right in front of the backup singers)...but who is that on the front piano, screen right? James Johnston? Was he with the band in this period?
it's the italian form of the world famous greek coffee frappe originated from thessaloniki ,which became famous from the tourist all over the world that tried even once when they're on vacations in greece ...take a look how similar theyare but they different in the way doing it....greek coffe itis easier to do it and you need coffe sugar ,water ice and a shaker.and no like the italian version it that you want for the foamcream , and other just to look alike
Please, please could someone rename this video so that the spelling and punctuation is not stupid...try "Nick Cave & the Bad Seeds - Abattoir Blues (Live on Later)" as an example...that gets around the copyright Gestapo...the way the title is at the moment is annoying...
Sorry, this is nothing but boring, Nick Cave should stop making music. He used to be really good, but meanwhile his music is just boring well-selling mainstream.
"Masterpiece of minimalism?" Three pianists to play two chords? That's not minimalism; it's utter ineptitude. His music DOES speak for Cave. It knows one word. That word is 'Rubbish'. The 'humour' is puerile. The 'intelligence' is only apparent by its absence.
I remember watching this when it was first aired thinking it was pretty special, 19 years later and it still is.
Fantastic song. I love that there's three pianos on it, all thundering the chords down in unison - gives it all that extra, glorious weight
They do.
I'm almost certain they used two drums when I saw them, with one piano less, though. And, although I agree the "hammering" of the pianos adds heft to the performance, the two drums kicking felt like you were getting punched. AND hammered.
It was glorious.
I only see two pianos
My bad, wasn't looking close enough 😮
I say this as a straight man: His moves make me tingle
I agree. So much so that I'm doing my Doctorate in Sacred Music on Nick Cave. It was approved last week. I've already sent his agent an email for an interview.
Love how Nick gets into the music! This is a great live performance of a great song.
My heart tumbles like the stock exchange... Best lyricist in my lifetime!
Shot, cigarette, shot, cigarette and this song is still playing...
This is one of the best songs EVER
Fuck, this bloke is an absolute Lord. What a tune
I have the feeling that the music Nick hears is even better than what we hear. I wish I could get into his head for an hour or so!

Too many to list here, but my favourite atm is Into My Arms. Gave me so much after I lost a family member

3 pianos + all the musical instruments, 3333 Nick Cave and The Bad Seeds.
"Entwined together in this culture of death."
beautiful singing zombie
Whenever I hear or see anything new about the political climate in America or see people arguing about the same old song and dance yet again, I get a healthy dose of them Abattoir Blues.
And I turn up this song.
Trump playing president, 2020. even more relevant this song! Trump is so wrong.
This is a 100% Man song....!
Genius.

holy shit i can't believe i never noticed, THREE PIANO'S!
me gusta mucho este tema
please someone upload a really good live version like this _ actually excellent - of the cannibal song
@MIKEDURSTEWITZ

3 pianos - Warren, Conway and I think James...
Wow, look at that: a self actualized human being... How refreshing.
@TROUBLEWATER is a capuccino with frappe
peaky blinders :D
It could be easily argued that all four are in the same echelon.
it's the italian form of the world famous greek coffee frappe originated from thessaloniki ,which became famous from the tourist all over the world that tried even once when they're on vacations in greece ...take a look how similar theyare but they different in the way doing it....greek coffe itis easier to do it and you need coffe sugar ,water ice and a shaker.and no like the italian version it that you want for the foamcream , and other just to look alike
So honest, so today...
2020: even more relevant this song! Trump is playing president and he’s all WRONG!
In spanish: "Puto Amo".
At the start he actually reminds me of Elrond for some reason...
As a fan of both I have to concur
basically a coffee milkshake.
If this doesn't turn you into a Nick Cave obsessive, nothing will.
The Agent Smith
Did they really need 3 pianos?
he looks a bit like Kevin Beacon at abou 0:42...:)
i'm sincerely sorry to have hurt your feelings. that was never my intention.
Please, please could someone rename this video so that the spelling and punctuation is not stupid...try "Nick Cave & the Bad Seeds - Abattoir Blues (Live on Later)" as an example...that gets around the copyright Gestapo...the way the title is at the moment is annoying...
@wwxoxww A frozen cappuccino.
pretty good but you still killed morpheus
Is it me, or is the tempo way too fast... Still, Only Nick could write a song dark enough to need 3 pianos...
these dance moves have nothing on the stagger lee music video dance moves
Nick Cave is definitely in Tom Waits' corner, but I'd say in terms of poetry, Cohen and Young are slightly above both.
fo shiz
wanted to be a superman.... but turned out such a jerk
Nah ya beautiful baybee...
Fine - even ti be recommended - for 6th formers. Trouble is, this twerp is last generation's 6th former.
Indeed you're not, Tokaida. I just wonder when his fans are going to wake up and realise how poor his stuff actually is.
Nothing?? hahahahah! TOM WAITS LEONARD COHEN NEIL YOUNG to name just three. Why be so myopic? Why be so exclusive?
Sorry, this is nothing but boring, Nick Cave should stop making music. He used to be really good, but meanwhile his music is just boring well-selling mainstream.
boring. give us back good ol' junkie nick.
this music sucks
6th form poetry (at best) melded to primary school music to produce 4 minutes of utter rubbish. As Mr Holland says - "Three pianos!"
What utter tosh! 6th form 'poetry' over music so tedious that it gives a bad name to 'moronic'. This man is not in the same universe as Tom Waites.
Wow 🥂🍻🥃
