Great video Jon. I always love learning about your new finds and wondered if some of these might actually make their way into your regular carry or perhaps updating some of your various EDC kits? The grappling hook and self defence foam certainly got my attention along with the Exotac ripspool you featured in another recent video! As always keep them coming Jon. Cheers from Canada
I'm a fan of AAA torches (currently carrying a Lumintop EDC02) and to alliviate my anxiety about running out of battery I use a Gusmade Original Pill Fob key ring which fits a AAA perfectly. Not cheap but an absolutely elegant solution if you like carrying minature stuff.
As an Aussie, we aren't allowed guns, bear sprays or knives, so milk crates are the main weapon. Though once a shopping trolley was used to take down a man with a knife attacking people outside a train station. I like the idea of the defence spray, does it come in other colours?
That were some cool gadgets. I love the multiple Edc's in one Video presentations that you do. I could watch this for hours 😅 (i just ordered the oreo xD)
I used to carry a monocle as a fine print reader when traveling. I also hacked a circular pill case by removing the chambered interior creating a single chamber and cushioned via glueing in thin foam within the lid and bottom case interior. The average sized monocle fits perfectly and the case is small enough to fit in the watch pocket of your jeans. Eventually I moved on from the monocle, and currently use a product called ThinOptics. It's a super thin, flexible reader that grips the bridge of your nose. It's small enough with carry case to fit in your wallet. The carry case is the size of a credit card, and about 3 or 4 credit cards thick. I still use the monocle if I dress up and want some extra style points.
I was given a plastic magnifying lens at a trade show & carry this in my coin pocket of my wallet. Rarely I need to use it but for the most finest print I MAY use it. Sometimes the finest print challenges the youngest eyes.
That lighter reminds me of my ol pipe zippo. The holes let you hold the flame over a pipe, then pull it in with puffs. Less chance of spilling kerosene on your tobacco. I quit smoking but it is still a really clever design, thought you might like that nugget.
I’m laughing so hard. My stepdaughter just, two days ago, got Maced, carelessly, by a jail coworker. Ruined her day. I have several tritium devices too. Very nice to find the sights in a handgun or shotgun in the dark. One downside, the tritium has a 15 year half-life, and gets pretty dim after that.

Well Jon, only last night found your videos and I have to say, one of the best channels I have see in a very long time. Very well made. Here I have to say the self defence spray is very good... unique I have to agree, but a very good idea.

Thank you for bringing monocles back. I’ve had one for a few years now, it’s invaluable when wearing contact lenses and I need to read something. You didn’t mention that it’s compulsory to speak the words “I say!” when you put it in, preferably in a Terry-Thomas voice.
The radioactive dose given off by the tritium key fob is inconsequential next to taking a long flight, living in Edinburgh (yes, the granite is radioactive), or in Cornwall (same reason). I've worked with radiation for over 20 years, and although it can be seriously harmful, there's a lot of fear around it if you don't understand it. You only need to be concerned about dose over time. High dose over a short time, or small dose over a very long time. This fob's emission means it doesn't last long enough, and your life is too short, to it to cause you any harms.
Thank you . I just got delivery of the steampunk lighter. Perfect for the ends of paracord I think. I know that a tea light candle would work too but that's not beautifully engineered. Aa always - only the best gear on here.

@@JonGadget Here's another interesting item - a 4mm thick power bank. TNTOR 2500mAH. For those that don't need to carry a lot of power, just enough for the emergency only.
Hi Jon, the self-defence foam might be of minimal use against a single assailant, as you rightly indicate, but worse than useless against more, because of the time taken to properly discharge. Conversely, even a one second squirt of pepper spray can incapacitate a determined attacker, so it is dangerous to suggest there is any comparable stopping power. Alternatively, here the UK, we are limited to a brolly, a tickling stick, or a blinding flashlight. 👍

People with wives/daughters: My sister wouldn’t carry a blade for safety no matter what I got her. Buying a Pepper Spray kit on Amazon that came with an extra can that was water (to learn to practice) she’s used and actually keeps in her purse. I’ve trained her to use it and she knows to only pull it when it’s getting shot. Do not pull as a deterrent or you’ve just given up your element of surprise. I digress.. get and train your more venerable family to use OC Spray. I recommend Sabre brand CS Tear Gas. It works and can save a life. One thing.. it doesn’t spray how you’d imagine.. so get the practice shooter kit and you’re set. Sabre on Amazon sends brandy new cans with a six year shelf life.. $40 gets you four cans and can save your life so consider buying some to have around the house, car and purse.
For lighters, can’t say enough good about the IM Corona old boy. I’ve collected lighters for decades and it’s by far the nicest soft flame butane I’ve found. Extremely well put together and every aspect is impressive apon close inspection. Have owned one for 6-7 years, use it daily and have run many cans through it. It also has a nice capacity, holding about as much as a bic, stays lit hands free and doesn’t heat up much with extended use, meaning it’ll work as an emergency candle for a few minutes if you need.

Good video! I like the chameleon tape, if you have a job where you use a measuring tape, it's a good conversation starter, really neat...the repair kit is very useful & practical as is the pill case...the lighter is beautiful - can't use it to light your favorite brier, but it would certainly look very impressive when you fire up a good stogie after a great dinner and with a nice brandy! Question: would you use paracord or a metal chain for that neat looking "retriever"? Thanks!
That Chamaleon is cool! Galen Leather also make a really nice brass tape measure, it's a bit more affordable, but unfortunately it's sold out most of the time
Re: Vintage-style lighters. Have you tried a rope lighter, also called a sailor’s lighter? It uses a piece of literal rope as the fuel, instead of kerosene or butane fuel. When you light it, you get more of a smoldering ember than a flame, but it’s still good for lighting a pipe or campfire tinder or whatever. The great thing about it is that the ember simply will not blow out. It is the closest thing to totally windproof I’ve ever seen. Besides, you can pretend you’re on the deck of an old clipper ship.
For me something I am curious about is how you keep your desk organized and avoid the clutter. You clearly have a lot of toys (as do I - though not as many it seems). This is something I struggle with as my little gadgets seem to find their way into my workspace as if by gremlins so its a constant chore it seems to keep my workspace tidy. Also what is your most precious gadget if you could select only one?
Check out ThinOptics or similar for "emergency" eyewear. I have a very thin piece stuck on the back of my phone case and it's been incredibly useful without adding any significant weight or volume to my edc. Also, I'm so glad I don't live in a country that makes it illegal to defend myself and I have to consider "painting" an attacker. 🤦🏻♂ That retro lighter is awesome. Love that style, too.
Jon, The Monocle in 3.00 is $52.00 USD and shipping to the USA (standard shipping) is a crazy $52.00 USD and using the discount code only gives 5% off not 10%. Could you advise why the shipping is so seeing the monocle is so lightweight and why the discount is 5% not 10%. I think the shipping is wrong and I know the discount is incorrect. Could you check this out and advise? Thank You Charlie
Hi Charles - I asked your question and here is the feedback: The discount is correct at 10%. It doesn't discount the shipping costs which will be why he has calculated it to 5%. The shipping cost is high because we only use UPS tracked service as we stopped using Royal Mail due to many shipment errors going abroad and poor tracking internationally. We don't do a non tracked option because we have been burned with that on too many occasions internationally. I know this doesn't really help but they have had so many packages lost in the past that they will only now used tracked UPS to the USA 🙁
I love the radioactive nonsense keyring, but I also love the self-defence spray. Which one is better?? There’s only one way to find out… Seriously tho, that classy monocle is my “Dad fave” of the lot. Nice vid!
I don't know how well sealed the steam punk lighter is but the problem I have with Zippos is that the fuel evaporates so unless you regularly use and refill it there's often no fuel left when you come to use it.
@@Rick-ve5lx I need to try this! I never carry a zippo anymore as the unreliability makes me twitchy. You generally get a couple of days before it’s back to dry again

Speaking of tritium, have you heard of the company, Marathon? They make automatic watches which have tritium on the hands ands and each hour. I have the GSAR model and love it. They are issued (or used to be?) to Canadian and US military forces.
Hi Jon, time for me to revisit some of your olders videos...I spent a few days away from big city, and on many occasions i found that using my smartphone as a torchlight was not good enough... Also one of my co travellers broke her glasses and desperately needed a glue stick to fix them (I am not making that up) -; The filtered water bottle would be nice too /) So i am going to look into your survival kit :-)
Glad to see I'm not the only one who thought of using monocles in the modern world I'm considering getting some but I'm short sighted, so in a pinch I can just use my phone as a magnifier if I need to see something far away I definitely agree on kerosene lighters. There's just something about them that's very cool. I carry a matte black zippo everyday, even though I don' t even smoke haha I don't have any use for the sewing kit, but I do have some tape around a credit card sized cardboard that I can use to fix random things in a pinch
about lighters, i asume you know the Austrian brand IMCO who makes nice looking vintage kerosene lighters. but i think they are not made in Austria anymore...

I use a metal filing cabinet normally used for documents with lots of drawers. I can't name one!
@@JonGadget Thanks John!
there's the cap gun lighter you can find on hackaday by that name, and there's also rope lighters
The Douglas field L and S lighters are pretty nice
If you're going to get more lighters, you can never go wrong with a vintage Ronson Princess. It's what James Bond uses in the novels. Lol
thanks for that 👍 a classic!
That retro lighter is awesome. Love that style, too.
Great feedback thank you - Thin optics are a great wallet option and I've referred to these in some other videos
Yes, you might be crippled for life, but at least you painted the attacker so the police might find him easier in a few days. lol
@@SeraphsWitness Crippled. Raped. Dead. Either way. 🤷🏻♂️
Jon,
The Monocle in 3.00 is $52.00 USD and shipping to the USA (standard shipping) is a crazy $52.00 USD and using the discount code only gives 5% off not 10%. Could you advise why the shipping is so seeing the monocle is so lightweight and why the discount is 5% not 10%. I think the shipping is wrong and I know the discount is incorrect. Could you check this out and advise? Thank You Charlie
Hi Charles, yes - that sounds wrong - I'll check it out and feedback
@@JonGadget also interested...I am from France.
France I think will be much more cost effective than USA at a guess
Hi Charles - I asked your question and here is the feedback:
The discount is correct at 10%.
I put 2 small butter fly sized needle in the rip spool for sutures cuz that sail needle would hurt just a bit lmao
I love the radioactive nonsense keyring, but I also love the self-defence spray. Which one is better?? There’s only one way to find out…
Seriously tho, that classy monocle is my “Dad fave” of the lot. Nice vid!
Great feedback - thanks Dan
That defence spray would certainly be classified as an offensive weapon in the UK!
That spray is a mini can of Christmas tree flocking 😂
That monocle …Jon aka Klink from Hogan’s Heroes!
I don't know how well sealed the steam punk lighter is but the problem I have with Zippos is that the fuel evaporates so unless you regularly use and refill it there's often no fuel left when you come to use it.
I know what you mean. Will be interesting to see.
Cut a small piece of bicycle inner tube and put it over the join. No more fuel evaporation.
@@Rick-ve5lx I need to try this! I never carry a zippo anymore as the unreliability makes me twitchy. You generally get a couple of days before it’s back to dry again
I recommend looking at the im corona pipemaster lighter. Very slick and vintage look
Do they still sell the bata lites.
"Ahh, Mr. Bond, I've been expecting you!"
....sprays red paint
Take a look at the IMCO lighter
Need that grappel hook in my life but no idea why?? Don't suppose there's a roadtrip special planned is there? Me and the missus spending 3weeks driving across France mid June throwing in a bit of camping every so often and I fancy some car EDC to bore her with! Great channel btw
Thanks Dan - as it happens car EDC in the works - should be just in time!
@@JonGadget no way! Looking forward to that then! Cheers
Speaking of tritium, have you heard of the company, Marathon? They make automatic watches which have tritium on the hands ands and each hour. I have the GSAR model and love it. They are issued (or used to be?) to Canadian and US military forces.
Will check it out 👍
I have also seen it on luxury watches. But the half-life time is a bit short for me.
Hi Jon,
time for me to revisit some of your olders videos...I spent a few days away from big city, and on many occasions i found that using my smartphone as a torchlight was not good enough...
Also one of my co travellers broke her glasses and desperately needed a glue stick to fix them (I am not making that up) -; The filtered water bottle would be nice too /)
So i am going to look into your survival kit :-)
Thanks for sharing Joe, these things do happen!
Monocle + lighter, steampunk indeed :-)
😁
That trench lighter would be a perfect companion for a proto pipe....
The Douglass field s lighter's. Love my collection.
a popular choice - thanks for suggestion
Nordmende made a very cool lighter as a bonus when purchased with their record/international band radiogram. Had both, but still have the lighter.
Glad to see I'm not the only one who thought of using monocles in the modern world
I'm considering getting some but I'm short sighted, so in a pinch I can just use my phone as a magnifier if I need to see something far away
I definitely agree on kerosene lighters. There's just something about them that's very cool. I carry a matte black zippo everyday, even though I don' t even smoke haha
I don't have any use for the sewing kit, but I do have some tape around a credit card sized cardboard that I can use to fix random things in a pinch
2:49 looks like straight out of a zombie movie.
I know 🤣
Originally that type of lighter is a pipe lighter because the flame can be pulled down from the bottom hole.
The funniest you've made
about lighters, i asume you know the Austrian brand IMCO who makes nice looking vintage kerosene lighters. but i think they are not made in Austria anymore...
I'm familiar with one of the designs but only after checking them out
Erm, it’s not kerosene but a form of clean burning petrol (gasoline.)
Poor Edd :( I like the look of that light up key ring tube. Might buy one if I win some cash 😊 entertaining vids as always John
Matthew 6:19-24 - "Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust[a] destroy and where thieves break in and steal, but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also."
Start working for God, you can be stacking up treasure in heaven RN. If you are not a follow of Messiah I would recommend becoming one. Call on the name of Jesus and pray for Him to intervene in your life. This world and the things in it are temporary. Belief in Messiah does not grant you salvation, you have to follow His commands and Obey Him also - Matthew 7:22, John 3:3, John 3:36
Imco lighters are very neat, and pretty cheap
a lot of people have mentioned this - thanks for sharing
In the US, we prefer lead over paint or Mace!
