Mirna Garcia I live in the U.K. It’s definitely day/month/year. Yes it’s the language but you tend to have a choice between English U.S and English U.K which not only have a different date format but also different spelling for certain words.

It’s so sad to see a small designer like Gabrielle Chanel who has tragic childhood and went through a lot of challenges to present mobility in women fashion to have people wearing something from her fashion house and made it look like it’s something that just created for no reason. Because it’s really hard to do that
I think it was in part because 1. she wears so much of it instead of just using one item per outfit as a statement piece and 2. there's no unity to what she wears and everything clashes, and when your pieces don't work together, it cheapens your whole outfit in general.

I like her fashion but she definitely wasn't a good person, she actually gave names of Jews to the nazis who were deported and sent to their death because of her. Yet even today she is one of the most celebrated designers and held in high regard, it's sad.
This show is basically American fantasy of coming to Europe and becoming some massive sensation to natives just because you're American. It's almost like American fantasy of coming to Asia and becoming sensation over being American. Or coming to Africa and... you know what i'm starting to see pattern here.
That's so true haha It reminds me of Sex and the City where it was a big deal being a "New Yorker" and an American and people all over the world were so enthusiastic about meeting one.

It's funny too, because as an American that has travelled a lot in Europe, that is not at all what happens. Like people ask questions, but no more so than when I say I am from Canada (dual citizen and sometimes it is better to be Canadian when travelling). And if there was any country where people really did not give two craps about what country I was from it was France. And I found most of the time, people there were NOT happy if I didn't even try to speak French. And when I lived in Denmark for a year, no one really cared. And if they did it was not really positive (not that it was negative either). It was more just questions about US health care or politics and why do we care so much about football. And then it became old news after a conversation or two.
I sadly agree I live in America and it's embarrassing to have unmature people who think a contrary is a certain way it's like some of us think South Korea is like K pop and it's sad because I used to think that but know I learn about more about South Korea and what's it's downfalls and know it's not just kpop. I'm happy though when my family went to Germany we respect them and didn't expect them to know english we were quite and we try to learn German so we can talk to them a little bit if we need help.

Emily’s character is so unlikeable. She doesn’t have any flaws, never gets upset (didn’t cry after breakup with long term bf), too prim. Ugly Betty was better because she was human and relatable
I mean she's unlikable because she has plenty of flaws. She's selfish, lazy, uses people and she is bad at her job. The issue this series has is that her flaws never have consequences for her. Everyone around her takes her shit and lets her get away with everything so she never grows as a character.

This! Every single person in this show is a caricature. They paint unrealistic awful claims about how french people are and then say that Emily is supposed to be "appreciative" of their culture. At that point I would prefer being insulted to my face rather than watching such a bad show that portrays a culture so badly.

In Europe is more like "this is what we offer, if you don't like it then go to another restaurant" while in America is more like "the costumer is always right". Of course we try to be as respectful as possible but it's very different than the fake-smiling waiter who ask you every five minutes if everything it's okay. As a french person the scene in the restaurant where she insists about sending back the steak while being so entitled was so uncomfortable... she actually represents what Europeans thinks of Americans: entitled, preachy, and hypocritical. (And I know it's not an accurate view of all Americans, it's just what media often show us)
I thought it was weird for a few reasons 1) she doesn’t like have any remorse and the whole action isn’t likable at all 2) a lot of people have talked about how when even the chef messes up a dish people have too much anxiety so they just eat it so idk why they would include it bc it wasn’t even relatable 3) i’m pretty sure she tried to order in french and SHE messed up once again showing her as disrespectful
Sending back food is somewhat of a normal thing here but like it’s rare that a chef messes up and you aren’t supposed to be rude about it either like she was normally if I ever have had food sent back it’s because the waitress asked me if something was wrong with my order not because I demanded something be cooked longer etc.

Mindy should’ve been the main character. Her story is actually amazing, leaving her rich family to come babysit in Paris, her love for learning languages - also they could’ve explored so much about what being Asian in a European city is like. Can we give up with the white main character norm I’m bored (I’m copyrighting this in case Netflix decides to steal my idea and ruin it)
That would’ve been so much more interesting! As an Asian girl myself who loves France and is in college majoring in French to be an French teacher or English teacher in France, it would’ve been so cool to see an Asian in a European city. I guess that’s why it’s annoying watching Lily Collins who I really like, play such a ridiculous role and not adapting to the French culture. When I went to France, I didn’t speak any English and practiced my French with everyone I spoke with. I hate that this show didn’t incorporate more of the French language, but instead solidifies the fact that Americans push being American on everyone.

I’m studying French and my grandparents have been to France and she said that they appreciate when an effort is made to use the language. i have no idea, it was a realllly weird plot point. it added literally nothing at all to the story and it was never mentioned again after it happened, it seemed like they were trying to overcompensate for the fact that there was no shock factor in the show

Of course some people will speak it, like people in some hostels, and she was in Paris so there may be more people who speak English than in other parts of the country (because, tourism). But there is also a lot of people who don't get English at all. I think I know more people who don't speak English than people who does. Even I, I can read English, write English, but I am unable to speak it. Maybe it would work with other countries, I don't know. But as a French person, the idea that someone can come to our country thinking everyone will understand her because she speaks an universal language... Yeah I would stay in the back and wait for the desillusion to come.

As a French man, the one thing that immediately seemed ridiculous about this show was how all these Parisian men are obsessed with this American girl. Americans are already seen as sloppy, rude, ignorant tourists in France in general - Paris is worse (Parisians have a reputation for being snobbish and elitist). There isn't an endless stream of educated, wealthy, attractive Parisian men who are just drooling after American women who they see as stupid, loud and embarrassing. It's weird that the show is able to portray her coworkers seeing Emily that way, but it doesn't translate into the way all these men see her. This isn't to say that it's accurate to see Americans that way - and I've personally dated more Americans than French people! - but it's not accurate to pretend Parisians aren't like that, and I feel like it's part of this American egoism where Americans feel like everyone all over the world is obsessed with them and sees them as desirable and important, when that's just how those Americans see themselves.

i dont think its egoism. quite the opposite. its escapism because its so impossible. its a fantasy that they want their audience to indulge in. the idea that they could travel to paris, go to fancy events and attract a chef that looks like a male model but also grab the attention of a multitude of handsome sensual cultured french men. the point is that its an unattainable fantasy to most american girls, not that its plausible for an american girl to attract in as many handsome men as emily did.
my favorite character was this ginger receptionist (?) at the restaurant who said "no, YOU reverse the dates". he was seething with passive agression and i loved his little smile. that's how i feel about emily most of the time

I actually thought that the show was going to be smart about Gabriel (like the only thing they would do properly) and send him away. Given that there is no way to twist their relationship into something ok, unless they make his girlfriend a mass murder cheater. But no, they do a “twist” and keep him. WHO on this Earth is team Gabriel? He is a douche! (and not a shower one)
One annoying thing was how in one scene that dude says "I like american p****" and she's disgusted, but then one or two scenes later she and Mindy both say she needs "some french D". I didn't know if the irony was on purpose but based on the general tone of the show I didn't think so. It's literally the same thing but just flipped, and that suddenly makes it okay? just inconsistent

you know, I think you're right. Especially since there was a chance the French guy was using the word inappropriately due to the fact that it was NOT his language, and it's NOT a given that French people would be such excellent English-speakers all around. Whereas Emily and Mindy don't have that excuse with English. Although, I'm still wondering where Mindy is supposed to have learned such impeccable English. She doesn't have an accent at all, that's pretty much impossible if she'd grown up in China as it's said. But maybe I'm forgetting something about her story.
Being from Serbia, the thing that really annoyed me was the scene with the Serbian gold-digger supermodel stripping naked on the street for a perfume commercial in front of a bunch of men - I thought we left hypersexual stereotypes about Slavic and Eastern European women in the past, where they belong. Just because Emily's character preached about it later in the same scene doesn't make it any better or less cringy.

the only decent part of the show is when Sylvie makes a speech at Emily where she basically says, "you come here, make no effort to learn the language, try to shove your american habits down our throat then wonder why none of us want to be around you." (@ 4:47) but of course they all had to fall for her quirky american ignorance in the end. This girl ends the show with fewer french skills than Eloise
A perfect example of this is also the scene where she mails the rules to all of them and one is about relationships at work. I'm not from France but from Germany, but when somebody here would try to say that to me even while I don't have a relationship with a colleague I would literelly say that we aren't in America where this MAYBE is normal (I watched some videos where it's said, that it is normal to have this rule in America) Like - Literally no one cares here as long as it doesn't affect your work.

It really doesn't matter as long as it's not a boss-employee thing because then there's abuse of power concerns but I mean people still don't care that much honestly. If it lessens productivity then yeah eventually you can file complaints but other than that, it's so weird. You don't owe your employer to stop yourself from pursuing a good relationship. The rule about relationships was actually one of the reasons, because based on our laws about work you can't get fired or other things because you have a relationship with a workmate. There is this lesbian couple at my old school. Nobody really knew they were together till they told us AFTER we left school. They weren't married or something like that. Everybody kind of knew it but ... nobody cared. Or rumours about other relationships. It was just a story-thing for us as schoolkids but ... not something important.

The last point about the older boss being sexy and stylish shows one big difference between Americana and French culture. In France, there are many older women being celebrated as charismatic beauties up to their 60's. If you watch French movies and TV shows, the sultry and self-assured older woman is a recurrent character and no one bats an eye at the idea that a younger man might find her alluring. I mean even the French president's wife is way older than him. Whereas in the US only the young can be sexy, if you believe what you see on screens.
I think because of capitalism. In America they shame you for looking old and having wrinkles so they sell women all these gimmicky products to feed into their insecurities
it's so disappointing that they turned mindy into the stereotypical "i'm asian so i can bash on asians" character because i feel like her story was genuinely interesting and the way that she adapted to french culture and cared a lot more about it than emily would have made for a better lead. but no, we just had to have another poc best friend that's a stereotype.
i felt like this show was made 10 years ago and forgotten about, and then someone found it and released it now. everything about it was seriously out of date and i cringed all the way through. also all of her social media posts were AWFUL and that’s supposed to be her job?? and thousands of people are following her? i couldn’t even make it past 3 episodes

I'm so glad someone pointed this out!! I thought it was weird how she got over it by posting one sad caption on Instagram and then it was like it never happened? Completely pointless to the storyline to have her go through a breakup when it gives her absolutely no character development. And she's supposed to seem loyal to him in the beginning but can't be loyal to her friend and respect their relationship. Or when she tells her work not to have unprofessional romances but then dates a client? She's hypocritical throughout the entire show
This is what confused me about the show. It tried so hard to keep that peppy facade up. Even after she got fired or learned something troubling at work, it would zoom in on her face for 5 seconds before moving on to something else
That "customer is always right" moment is horrible. Being a jerk to food service workers makes absolutely no one look good, and if I didn't know any better I would have assumed that moment was there to set Emily up as the antagonist or prissy rich girl archetype. To think that she's supposed to be the protagonist, and a likable one at that, is mind-blowing.

I mean to be honest I did find that part quite realistic - I lived in Paris for several years in my early 20s and I got a lot of attention from men. That's not a humble brag - a lot of them were creepy and gross cat calling me on the street, and many of them were smarmy rich French guys who only had one agenda (especially once they found out I was English, since English women apparently have a reputation of drinking a lot and being easy). However I never once found them charming, I found them all creepy. But in Emily in Paris the offensive thing was that this constant male attention was romanticised and normalised, and Emily encouraged it or engaged in it. Even the client who sent her underwear, she challenged him but she still ultimately was flirting with him and feeling charmed by him (she just was a bit ethically conflicted). So what's unrealistic is that she only gets attention from rich white conventionally-attractive men but never gets cat called or hit on by randos in the street or indeed anyone who isn't white.

Yes!! I’m an American living in Germany for four years now, and Europeans really value that time for their families and their own well being. Businesses are usually closed on Sundays too. They’re just not as overworked and obsessed with being open every hour of the day to make money.

The thing with Emilia Clarke in "Me Before You", is that her fashion was intentional. People comment in the movie that she dresses like an eclectic old woman, and also acknowledge how weird she is for liking black and yellow bee striped tights. Emily is meant to look fashionable and "hip", and the lack of self awareness makes it worse.

Cause she IS a ringgarde, who spends heavily on expensive pieces she don't know how to style, and would probably style it with something from Pretty Little Thing, in real life. That's what the show got wrong - there was nothing wrong with her having a few chanel pieces and bags here and there, but shouldn't have been so much and it should only have been accessories.

Emily's cross cultural attitude is horrific. Arriving at another continent and forcing her language, culture and customs on everyone there...? That's not just a bad character trait, that's highly problematic. It seems like this series is promoting some cultural superiority of Americans.

I think that says a lot about how the writers of this show perceive foreign cultures.

Yeah, she is nothing like Blair. Blair is an educated young woman, who would study French before she moves to Paris and would be able to communicate in French. Blair would have enjoyed the culture and would educate herself about the people and history of Paris and Blair would outperform everyone on her job. She would have rocked her marketing Job like noone else. Emily is infact more like Serena. Only she is lacking Serena’s charm and charisma to be this ignorant. I also wanted to add that Emily said that her parents weren’t wealthy. She mentioned that her mom was a teacher so it honestly made no sense that she had no many expensive pieces in her wardrobe. (Both my parents were teachers in NYC, so trust me I know lol) She was a twenty something, who is still beginning her career. Her wardrobe made no sense!! There were so many cute pieces but they were styled sooo wrong. Camille had the best wardrobe in my opinion!

I am a European and this show is a perfect summary of why no one here likes stereotypical Americans lol EDIT: apparently I need to clarify, I don’t mean all Americans nor that these behaviors are exclusive to Americans I do mean that there is an attitude that America is the greatest which is not healthy. It’s not even something I blame the people for, it’s just how American schools teach. I lived there when I was younger and the school taught that America invented the car and just about every other big thing of the last century and I was shocked. I really don’t blame Americans, and Europe certainly has a ton of its own problems, I mean our tourists are also obnoxious abroad, but the big difference is that I think most Americans expect the world to adjust to them whereas here there are so many cultures we learn to adjust to eachother and keep an open mind. We are also blunt and critical of eachother and of ourselves, and I wouldn’t say most Europeans think they come from the best country in the world. I know tons of wonderful Americans, but even they often fall to this mindset. I don’t judge because in America this is what’s taught, but I do hope that Americans can recognize the issues someday as recognizing the problems is the only way to make changes for the better. I don’t hate America, I don’t even hate American culture, granted it’s not my thing but I will still be accepting of it as long as it is not required of me or others to adapt totally to it. That’s what this TV show does. It shows an American who expects everyone around her to adapt and when they do, BAM, instantly all the problems go away. In many ways it is somehow propaganda and I don’t like that the show says ‘Europeans are snotty and rude and stubborn because they won’t change everything about themselves to fit one girl’. Criticism of Europe is fine, everyone here does it all the time, however saying that if we changed to be like America all our problems would go away is plain rude and egoistic. It’s a shame.

I remember sitting in a restaurant in Paris, eating and reading a book, minding my own business, when out of nowhere this French lady at the table next to me adressed me, realised that I didn't speak French, switched to heavily accented English, only to give me a sweet compliment for my hat. So much for "French people refuse to speak English and are mean to strangers".

Emily is one of the worst protagonists in TV. She continually makes mistakes and never learns. It would be a great show if it was an American who learns about the culture and gradually becomes more involved in the culture and her fashion could represent that by becoming better throughout the show.

Everything i hated about this show: 1- her personality is terrible, she's not funny, she's not a good friend, she's obnoxious and not interesting at all, but somehow every man falls for her 2- I know nothing about any of the characters besides who they are horny for 3- i hate the fact that she takes pictures of people without their permission and mocks them (????) 4- she's in a different country and yet doesn't even try to learn the culture 5- she's not that clever or good at her job, to be honest most of her accomplishments were by luck or things that in real life would never work 6- 90% of the jokes were about words in french that in english has another meaning, most likely something sexual It's a poor written show, but to be honest we watch almost anything that got romance + beautiful people
To be fair the selling point was the whole phrase "Emily in Paris" which was meant to give the hint that this was a story set in Paris but using the 'fish out of water' trope of someone who knows nothing about the environment that they're in and the entertainment is meant to come from watching them flounder. So we got what they promised on that front. However the writers failed because that trope is meant to 1) have the 'fish out of water' character be endearing in their confusion and therefore likeable and charming and make you want to root for them and 2) have that character grow at least a little by the end of the movie or season to be less of a fish out of water because they are meant to have learnt more about their surroundings. Emily was neither likable nor did she learn to assimilate into French culture more so the use of the trope failed.

It's such a shame because Paris is so diverse so many arabs, asians and africans in the city and we hardly saw that. I'm disappointed they didn't give any hobbies or interests to Emily it seemed like all she did was be obnoxious to the french culture and horny. This show had SO much potential but I carried on watching it because we hardly get any fashion related shows anymore. Well Emily's characters is pretty much the American stereotype. This show plays on that. As an American who worked in Paris, i can say ive heard several of things that were told to emily before. Its a light and fluffy show and yes Paris is extremely diverse. Its truly a beautiful city.
As someone’s who’s been to Paris, especially working in the business area it was actually surprisingly accurate with customs, non friendliness, distaste for Americans (I’m Australian thankfully but they would get annoyed at me if I said anything wrong when speaking French lol) however, it definitely did have stereotypes and mainly just didn’t explore the main characters or the side characters lives at all

Because they were so accurate, but you also got shown that th3 stereotypes are just surface level and first impression. But then they show you that getting to know people take time and the sterotypes dissapear.

It sucked but I still enjoyed it. It was fun trash like Wattpad, every guy she ran into kept falling in love with her! I couldn't stop screaming, "This is SUCH a TV show!" While watching it. And then I'd click the next episode. But my love for it is juxtaposed by my hate for how unrealistic it is. I wish my job would transfer me to Paris where I could just run into a hot neighbour. Plus, I know quite a bit of French and I've still never made friends with francophones in my area because my true personality can't shine through,I can't joke in French. How the hell does Emily charm all of those people, while being so insufferable? Ugh. I much preferred Camille, she was such a breath of fresh air compared to Emily.

And it was really fun to see Emily strugglem especially with the 5th floor thing, because my american friends and me, a european had the exact same talk, where i told them i was on the 2. floor and they went to the first 🤣 so it was really good with those kind of things and it was cute and feel good and you could just turn your brain off.
When I moved to Australia from France I learned the language and learned the culture and customs here, because I can’t expect a whole country to change their customs and culture for me and my family

I live pretty close to Paris and had a boyfriend there so I've spent most of my time there and this show was FULL of cliches. I don't understand why they portrayed French people being mean? I met so many people and everybody was welcoming and very polite. Not everybody smokes, in fact, smoking is forbidden inside public buildings since 2006 (or 2007?). However, I recommend everybody to go there at least for once. It is magical. The history is interesting and Paris is full of great art! Pls don't watch this show and assume people act that way. I mean frech people, not always, are kinda difficult to deal with, especially the males. They are usually really full of themselves, and to me, a young 19 girl, the weren't precisely polite. They would stare shamelessly to me and my friends while we were walking down the street and also, they were really touchy and kinda molested us on a busking concert. I mean if she can Americanise the pronunciation of French words that have no American counterpart there was no way in hell she was going to even attempt to properly pronounce French names that have do an American version to the pronunciation lol. You could see that even having someone show her proper pronunciation was a lost cause in the scene where she and the boss were repeating the same thing over and over and over again. The girl is a mess but I think that was the point. I can only hope that they made her this bad so that she can grow over the course of a few seasons and have real character development because honestly there's nowhere to go but up for her it seems.
exactly, whenever i travel i make sure to pronounce names the way they’re supposed to (i have an ethnic name that’s never pronounced right too) along with words i know in their language that i add in to conversations. it’s the bare minimum

I’m a Chinese American and I think Mindy Should’ve been portrayed as Korean like the actress. It might just be me, but I don’t think the actress looks Chinese. She looks Korean or at the least, Cambodian.

I don't understand how people defend this show saying it's escapism, in my escapist fantasies I at the very least look stylish and come across as intelligent. Why would anyone want to be Emily.
Emily does not need to come across as intelligent. She is the most lucky person in the world. She posts one quirky line on Instagram and everything and everyone is falling into her lap. Somehow she has all this designer clothes even though she is supposed to have only one drawer in her apartment. She never even thinks about money and she has 3 boyfriends at once. She lives in a nice neighborhood in paris. She never even sees a homeless person on the streets. She never gets tired to walk on cobblestones in high heels. And also there is no global pandemic. That's great escapism!

But still she could have designer clothes but where does she put them in her apartment? When Mindy moves in she asks 'can I claim a drawer' and Emily responds with 'there is only one drawer'. This woman must have a magic drawer since she is never wearing anything twice! I wish I had a magic drawer like that. This movie is not supposed to be realistic I think. It's still fun to watch.
Because she gets everything she wants and more. No need to make a character likeable or smart when you can just sheel them in plot armor and make them wear outfits that could pay the entire country’s health insurance.
What bothered me the most was the fact that Mindy didn't exist outside of the "white girl's supportive BFF" role, and they clearly added in the "disgraced pop singer" subplot *after* casting Ashley Park (who is Korean, not Chinese) because she's a Broadway actress. And they phoned it in on her dialogue because other than existing to patiently explain French customs to Emily, she mentions she's from China and makes jokes about communist China and speaks Mandarin (with a horrible accent, sorry Ashley) and that's it. It 100% feels like Mindy was an afterthought and they made her Chinese because a PR person noticed there was only 1 non-white person in the show (in *Paris...* right...), and instead of making her Korean after hiring a Korean actress they just figured white Americans wouldn't notice. Either that or she was Chinese the whole time and they just couldn't care less about giving her proper dialogue... I don't know which one's worse.
I agree that was very sloppy and insensitive on how they had cast Ashley to play a Chinese role instead of just keeping her real ethnicity. Mindy could of talk about the intense pressure of the K-pop industry and high beauty standards and it would of worked too . Honestly I would of rather see a show about Mindy, an Au Pair living in Paris than what we got.
Oh vei. As an Asian-American I understand the frustration when they swap cast one Eastern-Asian ethnicity for another. Memoirs of a Geisha and etc. It makes no sense. Would it have really made a difference to the story or plot if she had been Korean-american? They were probably too lazy and just 'had to keep the bad China-related jokes'.
I really hope the review just pulled the worst “in China we do this” lines, because those ones in the video were gross and wrong. “One child policy”? I guess if you’re a 14 y/o white Redditor, that’s the extent of your China knowledge, but anyone who has spent time in China knows they don’t “all have one kid.” It’s sad, because that could’ve been a great moment for some different fashion. The fashion coming out of Shanghai, Tokyo, Seoul, etc has a noticeably different flavor than Parisian fashion. Also, Chinese fashion, especially, is looked down upon. It would’ve been fun to deconstruct the obsession that SO many western women have with being a “chic” Parisian girl and shown that there’s more than one way to create an outfit.
I honestly felt like this show highlighted more problems with Americans than anything. I liked watching how well they represented our lack of respect, research, and language learning when we travel and how we expect the rest of the world to conform to our morals and ways. It also highlighted our hypocrisy and flaws in some of our believes like when they discuss the American idea of happiness or work ethic.
It represented it but didn't challenge it, or at least not enough. A lot of her ignorant actions were just brushed off and therefore made it seem like her behavior was ok.
Before my first trip to Paris (prior to Covid, I was spending a couple months a year there), I made damned sure to learn what I could about the culture and to try my best to learn French, and then booked a place on the outskirts in a non-tourist area so that I could live as much like a local to learn about the true culture, not the tourist culture. I found the French people to be really nice as long as you're polite. You say "bonjour" to the bus driver or you'll get a deservedly nasty look ("bonjour" means so much more than "hello"). You say "pardon" if you accidentally step on a foot in the metro. At least makea. real effort to speak French. That effort goes a LONG way, and those who speak English there are usually very happy to help as long as you've shown a true attempt at their language. Incidentally, Americans tend to have the attitude that those who come to America should acclimate to American, yet when not Americans travel to other countries, expect those countries to acclimate to Americans.
As a French person (also from Paris), I totally agree with everything you said. It's like they tried to make Paris like they wished it was for an American to move there, rather that how it really is. I think it would have been so much more interesting if they had been just a little more realistic.
Her outfits and the whole premise/characters/everything seemed very early 2010s...it’s as if the show’s creators wrote up in 2011/2012, left it, and rediscovered it recently and thought “this could work today!!” It really took me back to that time :// honestly, we don’t need to go back, what with the beautiful fashion trends we have now and the momentous strides taken for fleshed out characters, namely women/minorities/LGBTQ.

well that actually is described in the show as americans = emily being shocked by the love, sex affairs and romance that europeans represent :D so if you are american, this really kind of makes sense as europeans are way more open to such scenes as for example in rome/ paris / prague there are statues of naked people all over the city. we just dont care.

She herself has mentioned later in the show that she would've never thought she would've worked in Paris, that her dream was Chicago. Second of all, she accepted that job immediately, without a second thinking about her partner that was supposedly her fiance. Such big decisions need to be discussed beforehand with your partner. That's how long term relationships work. In the beginning of a relationship, you're supposed to share preferences, dreams and aspirations with your partner. That's how you decide if you pursue a long term relationship or not. So if it would've been her dream, he would've known from the beginning, and she would've known that it wasn't his dream. But it wasn't.

the story is too white. First of all Paris is a city that is verry diverse. Where are the arabic people ? the people from portugal, spain ? The people that from eastern europe ? Why is there only one black person ? ya'll realise Paris and France are full of diversity. A lot of french people have parents that aren't from France.

Go to Paris when Algeria, Tunisia or Morocco is playing football and you'll how crazy big the Arab population is! Etc. This is ridiculous to have a show that takes place there to be that white. It's absolutely infuriating that the show is completely oblivious of the fact that they are insulting every aspect of French culture while trying to "educate" the main lead about the same culture they just insulted. It's also painfully obvious that the show thinks its viewers are as clueless and naive as the main lead. There's nothing wrong with campy/cheesy shows as long as the characters are funny, relatable, and endearing with genuinely heartfelt and emotional messages that pays respect to its story, characters, and themes. THis could've been a great comedy if the show framed Emily as clearly in-the-wrong. She tries forcing the French locals to adapt around HER; rather than the other way around, but it just puts her on a downward-spiral.

In one episode antoine’s brand was making a commercial where a model was nude. Emily thought It was sexist and so they decided to upload it on Instagram and asked wether or not it was sexy or sexist. In reality this would create too much controversy and would be damaging towards the brand. Also during an influencer contest she made a pun saying “berry” instead of “very”. The CEO saw this and was like “ wow such a smart lady” lol 😂

It seems like the writer(s) is/are people who travelled in the 90s or earlier to places like France and China for a short period of time (1 or 2 weeks) and they're pulling info from their limited knowledge to craft this script. I think it was in part because 1. she wears so much of it instead of just using one item per outfit as a statement piece and 2. there's no unity to what she wears and everything clashes, and when your pieces don't work together, it cheapens your whole outfit in general.

It's funny too, because as an American that has travelled a lot in Europe, that is not at all what happens. Like people ask questions, but no more so than when I say I am from Canada (dual citizen and sometimes it is better to be Canadian when travelling). And if there was any country where people really did not give two craps about what country I was from it was France. And I found most of the time, people there were NOT happy if I didn't even try to speak French. And when I lived in Denmark for a year, no one really cared. And if they did it was not really positive (not that it was negative either). It was more just questions about US health care or politics and why do we care so much about football. And then it became old news after a conversation or two.

As an Asian girl myself who loves France and is in college majoring in French to be an French teacher or English teacher in France, it would’ve been so cool to see an Asian in a European city. I guess that’s why it’s annoying watching Lily Collins who I really like, play such a ridiculous role and not adapting to the French culture. When I went to France, I didn’t speak any English and practiced my French with everyone I spoke with. I hate that this show didn’t incorporate more of the French language, but instead solidifies the fact that Americans push being American on everyone.

Of course some people will speak it, like people in some hostels, and she was in Paris so there may be more people who speak English than in other parts of the country (because, tourism). But there is also a lot of people who don't get English at all. I think I know more people who don't speak English than people who does. Even I, I can read English, write English, but I am unable to speak it.
Maybe it would work with other countries, I don't know. But as a French person, the idea that someone can come to our country thinking everyone will understand her because she speaks an universal language... Yeah I would stay in the back and wait for the desillusion to come.

As a French man, the one thing that immediately seemed ridiculous about this show was how all these Parisian men are obsessed with this American girl. Americans are already seen as sloppy, rude, ignorant tourists in France in general - Paris is worse (Parisians have a reputation for being snobbish and elitist). There isn't an endless stream of educated, wealthy, attractive Parisian men who are just drooling after American women who they see as stupid, loud and embarrassing. It's weird that the show is able to portray her coworkers seeing Emily that way, but it doesn't translate into the way all these men see her. This isn't to say that it's accurate to see Americans that way - and I've personally dated more Americans than French people! - but it's not accurate to pretend Parisians aren't like that, and I feel like it's part of this American egoism where Americans feel like everyone all over the world is obsessed with them and sees them as desirable and important, when that's just how those Americans see themselves.
But it's Lily Collins, she is beautiful whether she is American or not lol She is 31 but looks 18... so her beauty usually appeals to young guys lol

you know, I think you're right. Especially since there was a chance the French guy was using the word inappropriately due to the fact that it was NOT his language, and it's NOT a given that French people would be such excellent English-speakers all around. Whereas Emily and Mindy don't have that excuse with English. Although, I'm still wondering where Mindy is supposed to have learned such impeccable English. She doesn't have an accent at all, that's pretty much impossible if she'd grown up in China as it's said. But maybe I'm forgetting something about her story.
Being from Serbia, the thing that really annoyed me was the scene with the Serbian gold-digger supermodel stripping naked on the street for a perfume commercial in front of a bunch of men - I thought we left hypersexual stereotypes about Slavic and Eastern European women in the past, where they belong. Just because Emily's character preached about it later in the same scene doesn't make it any better or less cringy.

the only decent part of the show is when Sylvie makes a speech at Emily where she basically says, "you come here, make no effort to learn the language, try to shove your american habits down our throat then wonder why none of us want to be around you." (@ 4:47) but of course they all had to fall for her quirky american ignorance in the end. This girl ends the show with fewer french skills than Eloise
A perfect example of this is also the scene where she mails the rules to all of them and one is about relationships at work. I'm not from France but from Germany, but when somebody here would try to say that to me even while I don't have a relationship with a colleague I would literelly say that we aren't in America where this MAYBE is normal (I watched some videos where it's said, that it is normal to have this rule in America) Like - Literally no one cares here as long as it doesn't affect your work.

It really doesn't matter as long as it's not a boss-employee thing because then there's abuse of power concerns but I mean people still don't care that much honestly. This rule never made any sense to me. It's very weird to try to control people's private life when it's completely irrelevant. If it lessens productivity then yeah eventually you can file complaints but other than that, it's so weird. You don't owe your employer to stop yourself from pursuing a good relationship. The last point about the older boss being sexy and stylish shows one big difference between Americana and French culture. In France, there are many older women being celebrated as charismatic beauties up to their 60's. If you watch French movies and TV shows, the sultry and self-assured older woman is a recurrent character and no one bats an eye at the idea that a younger man might find her alluring. I mean even the French president's wife is way older than him. Whereas in the US only the young can be sexy, if you believe what you see on screens.
Sylvie is my favorite , older women are sexy, and she is wonderfully so.

I'm so glad someone pointed this out!! I thought it was weird how she got over it by posting one sad caption on Instagram and then it was like it never happened? Completely pointless to the storyline to have her go through a breakup when it gives her absolutely no character development. And she's supposed to seem loyal to him in the beginning but can't be loyal to her friend and respect their relationship. Or when she tells her work not to have unprofessional romances but then dates a client? She's hypocritical throughout the entire show
This is what confused me about the show. It tried so hard to keep that peppy facade up. Even after she got fired or learned something troubling at work, it would zoom in on her face for 5 seconds before moving on to something else

That "customer is always right" moment is horrible. Being a jerk to food service workers makes absolutely no one look good, and if I didn't know any better I would have assumed that moment was there to set Emily up as the antagonist or prissy rich girl archetype. To think that she's supposed to be the protagonist, and a likable one at that, is mind-blowing.

The amount of attention Emily gets from french guys is the most unrealistic part of the show.
I mean to be honest I did find that part quite realistic - I lived in Paris for several years in my early 20s and I got a lot of attention from men. That's not a humble brag - a lot of them were creepy and gross cat calling me on the street, and many of them were smarmy rich French guys who only had one agenda (especially once they found out I was English, since English women apparently have a reputation of drinking a lot and being easy). However I never once found them charming, I found them all creepy. But in Emily in Paris the offensive thing was that this constant male attention was romanticised and normalised, and Emily encouraged it or engaged in it. Even the client who sent her underwear, she challenged him but she still ultimately was flirting with him and feeling charmed by him (she just was a bit ethically conflicted).
So what's unrealistic is that she only gets attention from rich white conventionally-attractive men but never gets cat called or hit on by randos in the street or indeed anyone who isn't white.

The thing with Emilia Clarke in "Me Before You", is that her fashion was intentional. People comment in the movie that she dresses like an eclectic old woman, and also acknowledge how weird she is for liking black and yellow bee striped tights. Emily is meant to look fashionable and "hip", and the lack of self awareness makes it worse.

There were so many cute pieces but they were styled sooo wrong. Camille had the best wardrobe in my opinion!

I do mean that there is an attitude that America is the greatest which is not healthy. It’s not even something I blame the people for, it’s just how American schools teach. I lived there when I was younger and the school taught that America invented the car and just about every other big thing of the last century and I was shocked. I really don’t blame Americans, and Europe certainly has a ton of its own problems, I mean our tourists are also obnoxious abroad, but the big difference is that I think most Americans expect the world to adjust to them whereas here there are so many cultures we learn to adjust to eachother and keep an open mind. We are also blunt and critical of eachother and of ourselves, and I wouldn’t say most Europeans think they come from the best country in the world.
I know tons of wonderful Americans, but even they often fall to this mindset. I don’t judge because in America this is what’s taught, but I do hope that Americans can recognize the issues someday as recognizing the problems is the only way to make changes for the better.
I don’t hate America, I don’t even hate American culture, granted it’s not my thing but I will still be accepting of it as long as it is not required of me or others to adapt totally to it. That’s what this TV show does. It shows an American who expects everyone around her to adapt and when they do, BAM, instantly all the problems go away. In many ways it is somehow propaganda and I don’t like that the show says ‘Europeans are snotty and rude and stubborn because they won’t change everything about themselves to fit one girl’.
Criticism of Europe is fine, everyone here does it all the time, however saying that if we changed to be like America all our problems would go away is plain rude and egoistic. It’s a shame.

Emily is one of the worst protagonists in TV. She continually makes mistakes and never learns. It would be a great show if it was an American who learns about the culture and gradually becomes more involved in the culture and her fashion could represent that by becoming better throughout the show.

Everything i hated about this show:
1- her personality is terrible, she's not funny, she's not a good friend, she's obnoxious and not interesting at all, but somehow every man falls for her
2- I know nothing about any of the characters besides who they are horny for
3- i hate the fact that she takes pictures of people without their permission and mocks them (????)
4- she's in a different country and yet doesn't even try to learn the culture
5- she's not that clever or good at her job, to be honest most of her accomplishments were by luck or things that in real life would never work
6- 90% of the jokes were about words in french that in english has another meaning, most likely something sexual
It's a poor written show, but to be honest we watch almost anything that got romance + beautiful people

The entire movie selling point is the word “Paris”, yet the main character doesn’t know shit about it. How genius!
To be fair the selling point was the whole phrase "Emily in Paris" which was meant to give the hint that this was a story set in Paris but using the 'fish out of water' trope of someone who knows nothing about the environment that they're in and the entertainment is meant to come from watching them flounder. So we got what they promised on that front. However the writers failed because that trope is meant to 1) have the 'fish out of water' character be endearing in their confusion and therefore likeable and charming and make you want to root for them and 2) have that character grow at least a little by the end of the movie or season to be less of a fish out of water because they are meant to have learnt more about their surroundings. Emily was neither likable nor did she learn to assimilate into French culture more so the use of the trope failed.

It's such a shame because Paris is so diverse so many arabs, asians and africans in the city and we hardly saw that. I'm disappointed they didn't give any hobbies or interests to Emily it seemed like all she did was be obnoxious to the french culture and horny. This show had SO much potential but I carried on watching it because we hardly get any fashion related shows anymore. Also this show really painted the french in every stereotype it could not sure how they got away with that

Well Emily's characters is pretty much the American stereotype. This show plays on that. As an American who worked in Paris, i can say ive heard several of things that were told to emily before. Its a light and fluffy show and yes Paris is extremely diverse. Its truly a beautiful city.
As someone’s who’s been to Paris, especially working in the business area it was actually surprisingly accurate with customs, non friendliness, distaste for Americans (I’m Australian thankfully but they would get annoyed at me if I said anything wrong when speaking French lol) however, it definitely did have stereotypes and mainly just didn’t explore the main characters or the side characters lives at all

But my love for it is juxtaposed by my hate for how unrealistic it is. I wish my job would transfer me to Paris where I could just run into a hot neighbour. Plus, I know quite a bit of French and I've still never made friends with francophones in my area because my true personality can't shine through,I can't joke in French. How the hell does Emily charm all of those people, while being so insufferable? Ugh. I much preferred Camille, she was such a breath of fresh air compared to Emily.

I live pretty close to Paris and had a boyfriend there so I've spent most of my time there and this show was FULL of cliches. I don't understand why they portrayed French people being mean? I met so many people and everybody was welcoming and very polite. Not everybody smokes, in fact, smoking is forbidden inside public buildings since 2006 (or 2007?). However, I recommend everybody to go there at least for once. It is magical. The history is interesting and Paris is full of great art! Pls don't watch this show and assume people act that way. I mean if she can Americanise the pronunciation of French words that have no American counterpart there was no way in hell she was going to even attempt to properly pronounce French names that have do an American version to the pronunciation lol. You could see that even having someone show her proper pronunciation was a lost cause in the scene where she and the boss were repeating the same thing over and over and over again. The girl is a mess but I think that was the point. I can only hope that they made her this bad so that she can grow over the course of a few seasons and have real character development because honestly there's nowhere to go but up for her it seems.

I don't understand how people defend this show saying it's escapism, in my escapist fantasies I at the very least look stylish and come across as intelligent. Why would anyone want to be Emily.
Emily does not need to come across as intelligent. She is the most lucky person in the world. She posts one quirky line on Instagram and everything and everyone is falling into her lap. Somehow she has all this designer clothes even though she is supposed to have only one drawer in her apartment. She never even thinks about money and she has 3 boyfriends at once. She lives in a nice neighborhood in paris. She never even sees a homeless person on the streets. She never gets tired to walk on cobblestones in high heels. And also there is no global pandemic. That's great escapism!

Because she gets everything she wants and more. No need to make a character likeable or smart when you can just sheel them in plot armor and make them wear outfits that could pay the entire country’s health insurance.
What bothered me the most was the fact that Mindy didn't exist outside of the "white girl's supportive BFF" role, and they clearly added in the "disgraced pop singer" subplot *after* casting Ashley Park (who is Korean, not Chinese) because she's a Broadway actress. And they phoned it in on her dialogue because other than existing to patiently explain French customs to Emily, she mentions she's from China and makes jokes about communist China and speaks Mandarin (with a horrible accent, sorry Ashley) and that's it.
It 100% feels like Mindy was an afterthought and they made her Chinese because a PR person noticed there was only 1 non-white person in the show (in *Paris...* right...), and instead of making her Korean after hiring a Korean actress they just figured white Americans wouldn't notice. Either that or she was Chinese the whole time and they just couldn't care less about giving her proper dialogue... I don't know which one's worse.
I agree that was very sloppy and insensitive on how they had cast Ashley to play a Chinese role instead of just keeping her real ethnicity. Mindy could of talk about the intense pressure of the K-pop industry and high beauty standards and it would of worked too . Honestly I would of rather see a show about Mindy, an Au Pair living in Paris than what we got.
Oh vei. As an Asian-American I understand the frustration when they swap cast one Eastern-Asian ethnicity for another. Memoirs of a Geisha and etc. It makes no sense. Would it have really made a difference to the story or plot if she had been Korean-american? They were probably too lazy and just 'had to keep the bad China-related jokes'.

I really hope the review just pulled the worst “in China we do this” lines, because those ones in the video were gross and wrong. “One child policy”? I guess if you’re a 14 y/o white Redditor, that’s the extent of your China knowledge, but anyone who has spent time in China knows they don’t “all have one kid.”
It’s sad, because that could’ve been a great moment for some different fashion. The fashion coming out of Shanghai, Tokyo, Seoul, etc has a noticeably different flavor than Parisian fashion. Also, Chinese fashion, especially, is looked down upon. It would’ve been fun to deconstruct the obsession that SO many western women have with being a “chic” Parisian girl and shown that there’s more than one way to create an outfit.

I honestly felt like this show highlighted more problems with Americans than anything. I liked watching how well they represented our lack of respect, research, and language learning when we travel and how we expect the rest of the world to conform to our morals and ways. It also highlighted our hypocrisy and flaws in some of our believes like when they discuss the American idea of happiness or work ethic.
We just have to hope that young American viewers are intelligent enough to "get it."
If I look at at lot of the comments under this video I think that they don't get it. They are just very offended by the Emily Character.
It represented it but didn't challenge it, or at least not enough. A lot of her ignorant actions were just brushed off and therefore made it seem like her behavior was ok.
This is also what I took from my binge of the show.
Before my first trip to Paris (prior to Covid, I was spending a couple months a year there), I made damned sure to learn what I could about the culture and to try my best to learn French, and then booked a place on the outskirts in a non-tourist area so that I could live as much like a local to learn about the true culture, not the tourist culture. I found the French people to be really nice as long as you're polite. You say "bonjour" to the bus driver or you'll get a deservedly nasty look ("bonjour" means so much more than "hello"). You say "pardon" if you accidentally step on a foot in the metro. At least makea. real effort to speak French. That effort goes a LONG way, and those who speak English there are usually very happy to help as long as you've shown a true attempt at their language.
Incidentally, Americans tend to have the attitude that those who come to America should acclimate to American, yet when not Americans travel to other countries, expect those countries to acclimate to Americans.
As a French person (also from Paris), I totally agree with everything you said. It's like they tried to make Paris like they wished it was for an American to move there, rather that how it really is. I think it would have been so much more interesting if they had been just a little more realistic.
Her outfits and the whole premise/characters/everything seemed very early 2010s...it’s as if the show’s creators wrote up in 2011/2012, left it, and rediscovered it recently and thought “this could work today!!” It really took me back to that time :// honestly, we don’t need to go back, what with the beautiful fashion trends we have now and the momentous strides taken for fleshed out characters, namely women/minorities/LGBTQ.

She herself has mentioned later in the show that she would've never thought she would've worked in Paris, that her dream was Chicago. Second of all, she accepted that job immediately, without a second thinking about her partner that was supposedly her fiance. Such big decisions need to be discussed beforehand with your partner. That's how long term relationships work. In the beginning of a relationship, you're supposed to share preferences, dreams and aspirations with your partner. That's how you decide if you pursue a long term relationship or not. So if it would've been her dream, he would've known from the beginning, and she would've known that it wasn't his dream. But it wasn't.

the story is too white. First of all Paris is a city that is verry diverse. Where are the arabic people ? the people from portugal, spain ? The people that from eastern europe ? It's absolutely infuriating that the show is completely oblivious of the fact that they are insulting every aspect of French culture while trying to "educate" the main lead about the same culture they just insulted. It's also painfully obvious that the show thinks its viewers are as clueless and naive as the main lead. There's nothing wrong with campy/cheesy shows as long as the characters are funny, relatable, and endearing with genuinely heartfelt and emotional messages that pays respect to its story, characters, and themes. THis could've been a great comedy if the show framed Emily as clearly in-the-wrong. She tries forcing the French locals to adapt around HER; rather than the other way around, but it just puts her on a downward-spiral.

Yes I do agree with you. Chinese culture is bought up in a negative light whenever mindy was on the screen. And what they did to french people is definitely horrible.
Lol we were supposed to believe Mindy came from a wealthy Shanghai merchant family but the fact her dad cut her off financially was so American, not Chinese at all. And lol...One kid?
It doesn’t “trash” Paris, it just shows some stereotypes but it goes to the other side of the spectrum too. They also showed some american stereotypes (talking loud, obsession with social media, etc).

The show acted like her ideas were genius but they weren’t. Some of them were stupid.

Her lack of hair changes for one.
In one episode antoine’s brand was making a commercial where a model was nude. Emily thought It was sexist and so they decided to upload it on Instagram and asked wether or not it was sexy or sexist. In reality this would create too much controversy and would be damaging towards the brand. Also during an influencer contest she made a pun saying “berry” instead of “very”. The CEO saw this and was like “ wow such a smart lady” lol 😂

And in that episode, instead of explaining to them exactly why she thought it was sexist or make suggestions on how to alter it, she's like "it's sexist cus I say so and I'm American so I must be right" and then puts it up on a poll? But as a finished ad? The company would be cancelled.

Hold Lily Collins accountable; she was bragging about how much she was involved in production of the show, as well as the development of “Emily”. Then reverted to saying she had nothing to do with the offensive stereotypes portrayed in the show after the backlash. I never ever want to see her as Audrey Hepburn; she is entitled and unbearable and I’m glad she was rejected for that role. Ew

I think the person who did this video might be right. It seems like the writer(s) is/are people who travelled in the 90s or earlier to places like France and China for a short period of time (1 or 2 weeks) and they're pulling info from their limited knowledge to craft this script. The info is outdated like being able to smoke in offices in France or the one child policy in China.
