Pete...my long lost Clydesdale. You are the horse I looked my whole life for. Please believe me...you will be making many, many long trips home with me for the rest of our lives. I love you buddy. You have your forever home.

I’ve been listening to this repeatedly lately. I’ve heard a few people play and sing this live in the USA. Due to its origin and vernacular being from “across the pond” it’s always seemed foreign enough to me that I haven’t attempted to sing it myself. This morning I realized the family connection that makes this song so appealing to me.
My grandfather wrote a book about pioneer days in Wisconsin, how his grandfather had homesteaded 40 acres. He mostly wanted the land for a great stand of Timber. Once logged, he tried to make a farm, using a team of oxen to pull up the stumps and plow.

Possibly my favourite song, by my favourite band. Lived on a farm that had a couple of them working in the West Country back in the mid 40's, and the gentility of these giants was nothing short of amazing !

My favourite song of the turn of the Millennium. I could not get it out of my head. And although I am Welsh and not Scots, when that bagpipe break arrives, the frisson that goes through me still reduces me to tears of both joy and sadness. Genuinely thrilling. And gosh, if those noble Clydesdales could be represented by just ONE human voice, then surely they would elect it to be Davy's. The warmth and compassion in his voice is quite nonpareil. So tragic that he was to die so young and so soon after this recording. Go see his mural in his native Prestonpans. (Dai Woosnam, Grimsby)
    THE LAST TRIP HOME
(Lyrics and voice, Davy Steele: melody, John McCusker)
A've ay worked on farms and fae the the start the muckle horses won ma heart,
Wi' their big broad backs they proudly stand, the uncrowned kings o a' the land,
An' yet for a' their power and strength, they're as gentle as a summer's wind.
    [chorus]
So steady boys walk on, oor work is nearly done,
No more we'll till or plough the fields, the horses' day is gone,
An'this will be oor last trip home, so steady boys walk on.
Now you'll hear men sing their songs of praise, of Arab stallions in a race,
Or Hunters that fly wi' the hounds, to chase the fox and run him down,
But none o' them compare I vow, tae a workin' pair that pulls the plough.
    [chorus]
Aw the years I've plied ma trade, an aw the fields we've ploughed and laid,
I never thought I'd see the time when a Clydesdale's work wid ever end,
But progress runs its driven course and tractors hae replaced ma horse.
    [chorus + bagpipe break]
As we head back our friends have lined the road tae see us one last time,
Not one o' them will want tae miss, the chance tae see us pass like this,
They'll say they saw in years tae come, the muckle horses' last trip home.
    [chorus + repeat]

I should have thanked holsteincowboy for doing us a huge service uploading this glorious track and matching it with such a moving video. And I should also have added regarding the enchanting Scots vernacular, that there is one word to translate from the lyric. And that is 'muckle'. In its context here, it means 'very large'. (Dai Woosnam, Grimsby).

They were loved and well cared for, and like many working animals, enjoyed the work.
