    Bjørn‘s educational videos are the best. Thanks. Would love to see more.

    Actually Type 2 also supports DC power (officially up to 70kW) using pairs of pins for - and +. It's this pinout that tesla use on the european superchargers (though they exceed the allowed current in the standard). Here in ireland we have more than 1000 22kW AC posts. But only 107 DC rapids (only 49 multistandard). The rapids have queues and the 22kW posts are practically abandoned.
    Also worth noting here again that because Tesla use the Type 2 in europe with the addition of the CCS pins they'd have physical compatibility with both CCS and existing superchargers with one socket on the car and no adapters. Hopefully supporting CCS in europe is the reason the Model 3 chargeport cover/area is so large, because the european CCS network is way larger in geographic coverage (and often more convenient) than the supercharger network.

    You ended your video so suddenly it felt like being left alone. ;) But this is just complaining on a high level. The video was great although I already knew all this but I liked to watch how you explain it to everybody else :)
    And of course to see how it is in Norway compared to Germany

    What happens if you lost your RFID Key? how to unplug the cable from charger?

    • @bjornnyland
      @bjornnyland  7 лет назад +22

      I forgot to tell in the video that if you unlock the charging cable from the car, the charging station will also unlock the cable.

    Oh wow! I really wanna meet you, especially as I live at haugerud! I've always gone past these charging stations, and I've always wondered how they work. Thanks for the demonstration! :)

    A bigger problem with the schuko is ware and tare. It is prone to damage, especially if people unplug the schuko first.
    When you are here i Trondheim, visit one of the public places with schuko, for instance the one at Heimdal centrum. It's burnt and cracked. I'm sure the type2 will hold up against abuse much better.

    Living in North America we only use J1772 (or what you Europeans call Type 1). Interestingly our charging stations all have the wiring & plugs built into the chargers, so all you have to do is swipe RFID/credit card and pull the plug from its socket and into your car.
    While the Type 2 Mennekes is beneficial as you can get 3 phase charging up to 22 kW, having to lug around your own cable to public charge sounds like a pain.

    • @bjornnyland
      @bjornnyland  6 лет назад +2

      it's not a pain. And 22 kW charging kicks ass compared to 7.4 kW.

    Do you know where I can get a US Tesla to European Type 2 adapter? Please help!

  • @jesperlundberg9836

    Tesla should bring back dual charger så you can charge at 22kw. Or even better quad charger 43kw. Dont even have to be dual anymore just put in one or two 22kw chargers in the car. In Northern Sweden 22kw ac is becoming common but very few dc charging stations.

    There is an other advantage of a type 2 cable: It can transport three phase to the car, which triples the power. A UMC with Schuko is single phase. You should mention this and the small "3" logo in the charge screen of the car. The second charging post is single phase according to the charge screen, whereas the first was three phase.

    • @bjornnyland
      @bjornnyland  7 лет назад

      Incorrect. UMC can also charge 3-pase 400 V. Up to 400 V, 16 A.

    • @56932982
      @56932982 7 лет назад

      Slight misunderstanding. I wrote: "A UMC _with_ _Schuko_". Schuko makes it single phase. (The same for the blue CEE plug: Single phase.) The UMC can do three phase of corse, but only with the red CEE plug.
      In Europe. In the US they usually have no three phase in domestic installations, but 240 V / 50 A single phase. So a US UMC can do 240 V / 48 A which gives about the same power as 230 V / 400 V three phase at 16 A.

      @rgolab3174 2 года назад

      @@56932982 Sort of correct. UMC is limited to 32A even with a 240V 50A plug. So the max an American Tesla can charge at is 32A X 240V = 7,6KW when charging with UMC. However, U.S. model 3 is equipped with an 11.5KW onboard charger so this is the max rate for AC charge in U.S. This can be achieved with the Tesla wall charger or a type 1 charger with an adapter that comes standard with U.S. Teslas, single phase (actually called split phase as there are 2 "hots" or phases 120V each, which are 180 degrees out of phase of each other, giving 240V and with 48A give a total of 11.5KW.

    Can you adjust the charging speed to only 5A or 10A or 13A in a Model 3 using the type 2 cable?

      A bit late but yes. You just go into the charging menu and select what amp you want to charge with.

    In Europe you bring your own type 2 cable for public chargers. In America the public level 2 240 volt chargers have their own cable,but tesla needs adaptor for J177 . That locks to the car but the j177 is not locked and can be unplugged. Does anyone know why tesla has a proprietary plug in America but in Europe they have a standard 240 volt that all EVs use?

      At least in Germany, any new charge station needs to come with a Type 2 socket. It’s in the law. Also is the EU Standard.

    • @rgolab3174
      @rgolab3174 2 года назад

      There was no type 1 or type 2 standards when Tesla started making their cars so they made their own standard.

    Which cable length do you recommend?

    • @bjornnyland
      @bjornnyland  7 лет назад +1

      Depends on your needs. The cable shown in the video is 4 m which works for me. But there were times when 5-7 m would be better. The downside of longer cable is that it takes up more space.

    • @cros13
      @cros13 7 лет назад +1

      The good side of a longer cable is you can work around a fossil car blocking the chargepoint.
