This would also allow me to compare both BRAW from Pyxis vs FX3/FX6 when the time comes!! Super excited to compare them!
your reasons for transitioning from Sony to BlackMagic sounds similar to my recent journey going from Sony to the Leica M system on the photography side. 1. going back to basics (manual focusing and all) 2. working on getting rid of bad habits (due to convenience and relying on tech) I'm a hobbyists with no need for a Pyxis, but I want to try one out day (it's the techie in me) lol
Love this video man! Its great to hear about what goes through your head as a working professional. Its also good to hear that you itch for the desire to challenge yourself and switch things up. Im sure its reassuring for most of your viewers to know that you go through similar dilemmas as a film maker
@@Technicooler it’s good that it’s being received that way to some extent! Definitely good to push boundaries. I’m excited to learn and share some valuable information through this journey.
Nice! I'm a Sony owner myself, but I've shot a couple of project on Blackmagic cameras. They're definitely up there in terms of image quality (and menu system!!). Like you I was immediately blown away by the images I took. They did made me wonder about switching! But in the end, as I work solo most of the time, the usability was more important to me. It wasn't recent iterations of BMC (like the pyxis, or newest Ursa) and they had problems with ports, no auto-focus, unusable battery life, heavy. But seeing thi I will definitely look to try a Pyxis! Cause if I had to make a narrative piece of work with a team, I would look to something else than the FX3 too! Have fun!
Exactly my thoughts!! Hence why we use tools for the right jobs! I'm slowly trying to learn more into the cine workflows and it's been a fun ride. Sooo excited to film more!
for the past 6 years I've gone from Sony to black magic 3 times :D. From a73 to BMPCC4K to A7siii, to Ursa, to FX3. Selling my s5iix and fx30 because this is a beast for anamorphic shooting.
Great review. The camera doesn't make you a great cinematographer, but it can be a great tool. One of my favorite cinematography books of all time is the Mastershots series. Beginning film makers always wonder why their first films look like bad family gathering videos. Mastershots will teach you that by showing you most of the important movement and lighting patterns. I'm looking very much to use the Pyxis as an intermediate cinema camera. Cheap enough to afford and experiment on without breaking the bank. Eventually a big narrative shoot will have a signifcant budget and you'll hire a DP will rent some big Arri or Red setup. Until then you've got your Pyxis to play with. I'll be playing with it to see how my anamorphic lenses will look on it.
Ah I was there some time.. I own the Pyxis as well, but I have to say it is not the best choice for "money jobs". If you work in larger teams, the Pyxis may work quite well. But when it comes to working quickly on set, you're practically lost on your own. The rolling shutter is also so terribly bad, it's really sad. You can practically only make very gentle movements. I really like Blackmagic, but I always use their cameras more as a “Sunday car” and not for every day work
Enter your lens metadata on the proper slate metadata fields, and in resolve enable gyro stabilization with a low setting and a lot of the RS panning artifacts just go away.
Thank you Marcel! Trying to push my cinematography skills with a camera that inspired me. Hopefully will get some tutorials or some video breakdowns out!!
Really love how bm just gives us what we want. Sony is great but still has some ways to go to enable us in that way. But like you said right tool for the right job. Lots of people miss that. Great stuff as always. Looking forward to see what pump out with this system,
I agree for most of what you said, the Pyxis is fantastic and I wanted to preorder from the moment Blackmagic was making the Livestream about it, BUT ended up going for Komodo because even though it’s a higher price, it also gives you more. With what I didn’t agreed, personally, is that the RED workflow is much much better than what BRaw is, and I have several reasons why this is, not saying it just because, don’t get me wrong, I love BRaw but it became my second favorite raw video format after R3D. Still I love the Pyxis and i would love to own it still, I feel it would look fantastic along side my Komodo as a B or even A Cam sometimes depending on the Job.
I do agree the RED gives you more and no doubt it's way better!! I think I just need to spend more time on that workflow and system for me to truly appreciate it. Maybe I'm just lazy to do a full dive but for now, I'm happy with what BRaw provides! Great cameras nowadays.. can't go wrong with many of our accessible options
@ I agree, everything is amazing this days, I even grabbed that new X-M5, it’s crazy good, 5-10 years ago we didn’t had gear close to how good it is nowadays, specially at this prices.
I dont need it all the time but having AF is a no brainer for me. I currently own BM and while ill agree the image is nice and easy to edit...sometimes for just normal stuff its a PITA. People complain about rigging it but I find no issues. The built in ND is a must and I would consider the Pyxis if it had them.
Yeah same here.. Exactly why the FX3 is there for those types of jobs needing AF. Maybe the DJI Focus Pro would be a great alternative to put on the Pyxis but meh haven't really thought of it that much. Internal ND on the FX6 is so clutch too. Would be nice to see in a Pyxis 2
Lumix and Black Magic are so compelling when you want to shoot anamorphic, but I don't see myself using anything other than Sony for my current paid work since it makes more sense for a solo operator.
I've gotten my FX30 built out and it truly is a powerhouse, but if I were to ever get another camera down the road once I have increased my skillset enough to need something better, I imagine myself getting a Blackmagic or a box style camera as well. Cant wait to see more content on the Pyxis.

Hi Victor, would you ever consider a video on how to get into filmmaking for brands? It’s something I definitely want to get into as I’m building my portfolio, and would love to know how you did it and some things you’d of done differently?
In well lit environments with slow moving subjects, the Pyxis is a value leader in many respects. But for most quick turnaround commercial work and for most event coverage and documentary filming Sony FX is the way to go. I shot with the BMCC (full frame) at the beginning of the year and when your max useable ISO is 1250 (yes on the package it says ISO3200, but 3200 is very noisy) then that sensor is a real clunker in anything but bright conditions.
Could you elaborate more on the 1250 ISO? I've done my quick testing and found 3200 on the pyxis to be decent. While still noisier than I expected even with decent lighting, I wasn't quite impressed with it. Mostly stuck to 400 and push the lights brighter but 1250 in "low light" I'm quite interested to know. I'll do my testing once I get back on the studio but I just want to know more since a few people have suggested me to try 1250!
@@VictorLaforteza 1250 tends to be much lower in noise than 3200, in fact about as clean as 400. And it’s not just me saying it, I’ve seen this mentioned many times with this sensor.
Hey :) 1250 is the start of the next base ISO. If you have some windows in your shot and go from 1000 to 1250 you will see the windows blow out. You’ll notice in Resolve that if you can change the ISO of the clip. But only between 100-1000. Or 1250 to 6400, depending on where your iso was set when shooting. 1250 will give you the lowest noise level when you switch to the second iso circuit. I do agree with you, have to switch things up now and then to find inspiration :)
If the dji focus pro was better, and the Pyxis had higher iso ability I’d buy it, but as it’s not designed for that type of work, I’ll have to skip it.
Hope you the best in the transition! I'll sadly have to unsubscribe as your Sony content helped and I have no plans for other systems, despite they have their own greatness.
