  • In this video, I want to discuss why it is that Gibson continues to be such a popular guitar brand even though we have all heard the complaints to quality control and price as well as other things. Still, we continue to buy Gibson guitars and the brand continues to stay in the spotlight. for me there are a couple of reasons I want to touch on those in this video.. please make sure and share your thoughts in the comments below. I really want to hear your thoughts on this as well.

    Growing up most of my guitar hero’s played Gibson. My first guitar was a cheap copy of a Les Paul that I have learned on. I practiced and practiced till I got a real Gibson Les Paul when I was 15. I always owned or played LP’s for over 35 years. I had Fenders, PRS, Epiphone and others. I only own one Strat, an Epiphone and the rest are all Gibson. I don’t care about what people think of the brand I’m the one playing them lol. There is no doubt and something about a Gibson when you pick one up. I know exactly what you’re talking about. There are copies and there are Gibsons.
    RIP Dickey Betts

    I've had many Gibsons. Different models and years. I still have three. Tone is one aspect, quality another. At one time quality was a deciding factor among brands. Now however things are changing. I have a PRS 513 that is every bit, if not better than Gibson. The fit, finish and wood figure and tone is just as nice as my Gibson custom shop 59 reissue. Both were just over $5000 and both are exceptional guitars. I have two Strats, and their both ok but not in the same class as the previous two. I've looked at Fender custom shop units that were the same price as the 59RI and the 513 and the quality in my opinion was not even close. I guess everyone has to choose your own happy medium. Price vs tone vs feel vs quality. Just like this video states, there are good and not so good in all brands. I've heard cheap Fender Squier series that blew me away on tone. Maybe not perfect in aesthetics, but still killer tone. While top end guitars that sounded ok, but tone was mediocre. Maybe it's just pick ups and wood combinations that determine GREAT from ok.

      I think “great” is the sum of a lot of small details. I get what you’re saying about Fender CS. I love a great Strat or Tele but they just don’t feel the same as a custom shop Gibson or Core Model PRS. As you said, there are some cheap guitars that can knock your socks off and some expensive ones that really don’t inspire.

    My Gibsons are phenomenal. Ive been playing one particular 1980 SG since 1986 and it is the mist consistent guitar i ever saw or played. The tuning stability is unparalleled and i can play a power chord and have lunch while it rings out

    Mine are in the cases. I have two LPs. I bought a Strandberg. Then it occurred to me that my Gibsons were like x-wives. I was always fighting with them one way or another. Comfort, tuning, and even tone.
    The next time I touch my Gibson's it will be to hand them to the new owner when I sell them.

    • @thefretfiles
      @thefretfiles  5 месяцев назад

      What prompted you to get the LP’s in the first place? Obviously they aren’t working for you but I’m curious what the motivating factor was. And how do you like the Strandberg?

    • @ChaseTheHeat
      @ChaseTheHeat 5 месяцев назад

      @@thefretfiles since I was a little kid, I always wanted an LP. When I could afford it, I bought a few. One is a custom shop black beauty. Had I known what they really were. I never would’ve bought them. The Strandberg is the greatest guitar I’ve ever ever touched. Had I got a Strandberg when I first begin playing. I would be a session professional right now because I can’t put the Strandberg down. Ironic because now I can’t pick a Gibson up

      Well, it’s good that you found the right guitar to inspire you. I think a lot of the reason people buy Gibsons in the first place is like I said, their heroes played them and there’s an association with certain music from the past. For a lot of us those guitars inspire our best playing, but then there are others like yourself who realize that it was more just a desire to have one, but you then learned that it wasn’t the right guitar for you. Oh, and I forgot to say I absolutely loved your “ex-wives” analogy.😂

    I was a teenager in the early eighties when I got into rock music and this was when AC/DC was having their big breakout moment. I played the "Back in Black" album on an endless repeat and it became the epitome of what I wanted to accomplish when I picked up the guitar to learn. So, Angus became my north star and what does Angus play? Never looked back and now own a ridiculous amount of SGs. I've been extremely lucky (I guess) because I've never really encountered major QC issues with my Gibsons. They always played, sounded and looked great. I play slide and always enjoyed the upper fret access the SG affords.

      You know, as another comment mentioned I think a lot of these negative stereotypes about Gibson‘s are perpetuated by people who don’t own one. Like you I’ve had tons of Gibson guitars and I’ve never encountered tuning instability that wasn’t correct Abel with some basic adjustments and set up work. Being an SG guy like yourself, I also always hear “ I just can’t play them because of the neck dive.” And while there are maybe more examples of SG‘s that have neck dive, and some other models, I have to say that I rarely ever run into this issue with SG’s. And generally, the right guitar strap will fix the problem. But someone on a forum somewhere told them that all SG is have neck dive so you shouldn’t get one and they have just taken that as gospel truth and may be missing out on experiencing an amazing Guitar because they’ve let somebody else decide for them.

      @@thefretfiles Kind of weird. I posted this on your "Why the SG is the best guitar" video and it ended up here. 🤷‍♂ But, yeah, never had a problem with neck dive that a leather strap with a textured back couldn't solve. I've gotten to a point in my life where I can afford a custom shop and I went with the '64, light aged, in pelham blue. I didn't know what to expect, but it's an amazing instrument, light, chimey, it feels like a lot of the moisture weight in the wood that's normal in a production model is gone which gives it an almost hollow sounding quality when playing it unplugged. I'm not sure if I'm a super fan of the Murphy aging, especially the cracked finish feeling on the neck, but I'm getting used to it (a flake has already fallen off, but not a huge deal, gives it character). I would've been just as happy with a VOS and saved a thousand bucks on the purchase price, but ah, well.

      @@anabidingdude8079 not sure how you landed here either but I’m glad you did and thank you for commenting! Yeah, some of the Murphy aging on the neck can take a little getting used to, but I really think they look great. I never considered the moisture content in the wood thing but it definitely does seem like the custom shop would pick the drier and better wood. Your description of your guitar guitar mirrors how I feel about mine and it sounds like you found a great one!

      @@Les537 1000% THIS!!! I have had Gibson’s (and other brands) that had tuning stability issues and that simply means a little set up / adjustment time Is required. For instance, on my 64 SG with the Maestro Vibrola, people always ask me how I keep it in tune. Well it’s got a proper set up and lubricated but slots and I have zero issues. I also couldn’t agree more with the statement that a lot of people perpetuating the stereotypes about Gibson guitars do not or have not owned one.

    There's Gibson and there's Fender. All the rest ar basically copies. There's something to be said for originality and I don't care how good a PRS is, it's still a copy. I grew up in the 70's and my favourite guitarists were Jimmy Page, Peter Green, Billy Gibbons and Angus Young and seeing them play those Gibsons made them special. I've played Gibson's ever since, although I also have a Fender Strat. When I got my first Les Paul I couldn't imagine any other object on the planet could be better than that. Even though I know there are probably better quality guitars available that are probably better value for money I'll never buy anything other than Gibson or Fender. Doesn't matter how illogical it is, it's just etched into my DNA now I suppose.

      I think a lot of us feel the same way! When you grow up with heroes that all play the same thing you naturally want that and once you get it, I think the combination of just how great the guitars are plus the mental image of your heroes playing them just makes them extra special.

    I love gibsons. I've owned 4. Currently got 3. LP special and a couple of SGs. For me it's the short scale board, the full neck, that thick sound - p90 or bucker, that new gibson smell. I just love them. I've had some quality control issues, but still love them. I've owned about 50 other guitars and I'd trade a room full of them for one more gibson.
