    Until recently, scientists thought cannibalism was a rare response to starvation or other extreme stress. Well-known cannibals like the praying mantis and black widow were considered bizarre exceptions. But now, we know they more or less represent the rule. Bill Schutt shows how cannibalism can promote the survival of a species by reducing competition, culling the weak, and bolstering the strong.

    I remember reading recently that the "fact" that cannibalism is a regular part of praying mantis mating is incorrect. Yes the female will eat the male if she is hungry enough, but more often then not the male is able to live and mate another day. This myth comes from studies on captive specimens, where they were kept in close proximity to each other and the male was unable to escape due to the confines of their container. So yes, praying mantises are cannibals but it isn't a normal part of their courting behavior like the australian red-backed spider.

      Thank you! It’s always so, so important to keep in mind that what we see happen between individual animals in captivity may not always be the case for other, free-roaming individuals-If I remember correctly, one Portuguese study found that under natural, wild conditions, a mere 25-30% of male European mantids are eaten by their partners.

      No that makes Differenc ehumans from animals... we rather nurture weak ones and care of them if we able. they survive and sometimes even become stronger.. and more resistant toward things in certain ways. ofc the polution and over things reduces the protection we develope... since we have medicin we can cure heal nurture things...

    What you left out is the fact unlike humans when cannibalism takes place disease is not contracted! For us to eat each other all sorts of problems are passed on including neurodegenerative disorders! This happens because socially it has never been the norm within our species so we have evolved differently!

    • @pigeonlove
      @pigeonlove 5 лет назад +22

      Not so, in many places around the world it was the norm up until fairly recently. Including eating your elders.
