    Subaru is smart for creating a PHEV. If car manufacturers want to be competitive, they need to plan and adapt for the future. This a great step in the right direction.

    Its pretty funny that everyone has something negative to say, i think everyone forgets this is the first model, obviously once Subaru starts figuring out the cons and pros they will be able to compete more, and continue to excel in the automotive field. I feel its a great start and step in the right direction. plus if you're wanting something with range and better off road capability, obviously don't get a hybrid.... Thanks for the video, very well done.

    I wish Subaru would do something for the Outback. I do a mix of all kinds of driving and off-roading but fuel economy is awful for any city driving. PHEV would be perfect for that back and forth to the office on the weekdays, you could do it all on the battery.

    A good start by Subaru, but the EV range is lacking. I actually just sold my ‘16 Crosstrek and bought a Chevy Volt. Sacrificed AWD for 53 miles of battery power. Love, love, love Subaru (owned 5), but am awaiting a bit more range and practicality from their PHEV offerings before I pull the trigger again.

      Subaru is not going to make any good progress on hybrids. They never really will since they've never made hybrids and their business model isn't really on hybrids. Comparing overall, this new hybrid is more detrimental compared to the old 2016 hybrid models of crosstrek in overall category in terms of performance. The engine is much worse than the 160hp you get from the older ones. The gas mileage isn't all that better considering you can get close to 35mpg on the newer FB engines from 2018.

    • @calivalley9056

      They need to not waste RD money on PHEV and go full EV. Subaru is so far behind. I to love Subaru, I am always hoping they will future proof their company but every year I get disappointed. I also own a 2nd GEN Volt, great car, perfect fit for my situation but having owned for a while I now know the hybrid gas component is a waste. Full EV is the only way forward, until it is not. ICE is dead. All these cars being released are milking the dying ICE market. That is the reason Ford, Gm and VW have all pulled back. They a bracing for peak ICE sales, we are there now. This is the paradigm shift and it is going to be rough.

    • @chrisrader8547
      @chrisrader8547 6 лет назад

      Im already shopping out a Bolt EV to replace my Civic next year. For us, the Volt is handy with its gasoline engine enabling us to make treks to Colorado and other places close enough to not need to fly, but far enough to make an EV run impractical. Biggest thing that needs to happen is for EV prices to come down to sane, normal car price levels. That tax credit they like to tout only works if you were exposed to tax liability to begin with, otherwise, nada.

    I suspect that the CVT is actually a modified version of the Toyota hybrid drivetrain (like the one in the Prius) which uses the 2 electric motors connected to different parts of the planetary gearset to change the ratio between the internal combustion engine and the wheels, rather than being based on the previous Subaru CVTs. I mean, Subaru probably has access to that design what with something like 30% of the company being owned by Toyota and the Prius drivetrain is pretty well polished by now, so it would make sense to do it that way.

    • @joechief2456
      @joechief2456 6 лет назад +2

      @fukthegoog I've got nothing but respect for Subaru's developments in the CVT space but this isn't a Subaru CVT, it's a Toyota eCVT, the difference being that it's actually a planetary gear set that uses 2 electric motors attached to 2 other inputs on the 3 input gear set and clever control of those motors to vary the effective ratio between the engine and the wheels. Subaru's more conventional CVTs are traditional belt and pulley style designs. Subaru may have better belts and pulleys for a conventional internal combustion car but Toyota is the undeniable leader in hybrid powertrains and it's clear that Subaru agrees given that they have either licensed/bought this system from Toyota or copied it (the latter being unlikely given how close to Prius level fuel economy this is).

    • @bob15479
      @bob15479 5 лет назад

      @fukthegoog if they don't need toyota's tech why do they use it? it's no speculation look it up

  • @chazlyle41
    @chazlyle41 6 лет назад +6

    19 Rav4 gets better mileage, has more room, doesn't cost as much as another car to go hybrid, and you don't have to plug it in.. I've always preferred Subaru AWD to Toyotas, but if you're here for the hybrid soft-roader the Yota is the clear choice.

    There's a huge plus for the battery placement in this. Its not in the bottom of the car where it would be prone to getting smacked off road. Also, extra weight will only help in a collision.

I do wish my car had heated seats but it sits in a garage so it’s really not even an issue anyways. Leather gets super cold. I made the right decision with the base. Big encouragement here to reduce pollution so would have considered this as an option but not sure I would want to give up all that boot space. If it's as heavy as the Forester would prefer Forester with same system and possibly more boot space.

    They should have fit the battery under the rear seat for that range how did they not manage that? I have a new Leaf thats where they put it for a 230km range and the result is 50% more rear storage capacity that the SUBI. Once again some neat ideas and tech but c'mon Subaru go full EV. Do it in the Forester and sell more than you can possibly make...That and finally end the head gasket failures once and for all.

  • @dkphantomdk
    @dkphantomdk 6 лет назад +6

    Well, you where going way to fast.. !
    - such a shame when people who are testing cars do this.. drive those test cars like you paid for them !!
    But.. The Subaru Crosstrek Hybrid.
    It is the same 2.0L H4 as the normal crosstrek.
    But it is allmost 500 pound more heavy.
    - this is a dead give-away that the car will have a lower mpg than the standard car.
    Dragging 500 pounds more uphill takes more power = more fuel used.
    you can use the electrik engine to suport it, and regenerate on your way down.
    But, a normal engine dont use gas downhill hanging in gear.
    you NEED to plug in the car at home to have any benefits from the electrik engine, you cant trust the regeneration to give you any advantage over the normal car.
    - so I believe that this is stil a way to make people THINK they are going green by having a hybrid.
    Also, the price is to high.. 7800 USD extra for a hybrid car.
    you can buy 2.600 gallons for those money.
    that will take you 30mpg x 2.600 gallons = 78.000 miles..
    So you will have to drive 78.000 miles on FREE ELECTRIC only to even make the extra payment worth paying
    So tell me again, where is the point in buying a hybrid car?
    - more expensive, same engine and you will not save money at all..

      You are free to choose but it doesnt mean you have the right to call someone stupid.
      Personally i also think hybrids are pointless. You have to fill a gas tank and a battery instead of just filling one gas tank. It may burn less fuel but it has already polluted the environment via the production of these battery packs.
      Again, the choice is yours.

    27 Km of EV range is stupid but better than nothing and it'll be enough to get you from your house or apartment to work and do grocery shopping. It would've made 'so' much more sense if they came out with a plug-in hybrid version of the Forester and the Ascent and top them off with an EV range of 50 to 75 kilometers.

    • @441meatloaf
      @441meatloaf 6 лет назад

      Having a hybrid with the ascent is really stupid. Ascent is a heavy car being a 7 seater. The turbo FA24F is a very new and improved engine on performance and fuel efficiency compared to the existing FB turbos used on the WRXs that has the similar torque and power. Also FA24F i believe doesn't require premium fuel which is a plus.

    • @firefox39693
      @firefox39693 6 лет назад

      @@441meatloaf No. It's not a stupid idea at all. Americans and Canadians both prefer larger SUV's. The difference in weight isn't a legitimate point to take since the Outlander also competes directly against the Ascent.
      The BMW X5 has a plug-in varriant with 80 km of EV-only range. The Volvo XC90 T8 can go over 40 km on a charge.
      Having a plug-in hybrid powertrain makes great sense for people who live in an area with a carbon tax and high gas prices. Being able to skirt paying the carbon tax and paying for gas is great if you can do it.

    • @441meatloaf
      @441meatloaf 6 лет назад

      @@firefox39693 Americans and canadians do not really prefer larger suvs unless you have 3 kids. The trend is compact suvs for the majority especially the market is for millenials. They will not buy a 4 runner that is larger than a minivan. Second is cost and fuel economy. Hybrids are not efficient on larger vehicles + the extra premium price of another 10k thats cost recovery is very low. BMW hybrids are all on the smaller side of SUVs especially BMW is pushing sales of X1.

    • @441meatloaf
      @441meatloaf 6 лет назад

      @@firefox39693 gas has become less of a problem when fuel.efficiency technology has been revised and increased on every year. The bigger problem is space. Also subaru is very bad at hybrids

    • @drivingsports
      @drivingsports  6 лет назад

      Subaru said that they will be released in 10 states to start. Another consideration is maintenance... outside those 10 states Subaru dealers can decide if they want to get the proper equipment to maintain the new PHEV powertrain. So if you do want to cross state lines, be prepared for a long drive if there is a powertrain issue and your local dealer decided to not get equipment and certifications for PHEV.

    • @drivingsports

      The petrol engine is a flat-4. No Subarus use Toyota engines. The closest thing is the Toyota fuel injection included the BRZ/FRS and even that is part of a Subaru boxer (yes, in both the Toyota and Subaru-branded versions.)

    • @441meatloaf
      @441meatloaf 6 лет назад

      @@drivingsports Hmm, Atkinson Cycle is not native to Subaru's ignition cycle used. Subaru has opted most of its cars to use new DIT from toyota and is much more fuel efficient while retaining the power considering 2018 models already have variable valve timing to increase efficiency. Wouldn't this actually be detrimental to the crosstrek itself adding 500 pounds of weight to the car? Comparing to the older hybrid models subaru first attempted it achieved 160hp combined. The EV component doesnt add much in terms of performance and overall seems like a waste for a top of the line price tag which is just appalling. You could buy a low end Lexus UX for that price. I can likely see those wont go well in terms of sales for this model especially only 17 miles on EV range......the regular gas model does way better.

    • @drivingsports
      @drivingsports  6 лет назад

      @@441meatloaf They don't normally use Atkinson cycle because it robs low-end torque. That is supplemented by the electric motors, so it makes sense here. Also, DIT from Toyota is only on the BRZ/FRS, other motors use Subaru's in-house DIT. The old Hybrid had a 13hp motor. It's just calculated differently.

    • @drivingsports

      So many PHEVs have this range because the US Govt. says the average commute is 16 miles. By that measure a 17 mile range can get a driver to and from work without using gas. (Assuming there is a charger at work.) I agree the range should be longer. However, for a PHEV I can understand the reasoning. Also, people are already complaining about the lack of space. More range equals even less space given the current packaging.

    • @shadowdance4666
      @shadowdance4666 6 лет назад
