I CAN'T GET OVER THE DIFFERENCE THIS MAKES! I'm so glad I watched your video. My poor amaryllis bulbs were neglected and in their dormant state in my cold plant closet for way too long due to ill health distracting me from taking my usual care of them so I was not expecting much. I soaked just the roots by putting them all in the laundry room sink in a few inches of water, enough for the roots but not so much that the bulbs were in water and kept a small counter top box heater slightly tilted and aimed at the sink to keep them warm. Soaked for 24 hours, potted up and they greened up and shot up so fast I was amazed. Day one I thought, how do those look so good after my neglect, day two they were so green and vibrant lookin, day three I thought are those really that tall? Day four and they are going like gangbusters. Absolutely amazing. ALL 22 have survived and are thriving, including the babies that wintered over for far too long attached to the mother plant which separated when I soaked the roots. I fed them today, day four and hope they continue to thrive. I really can't believe it. Thanks for this very useful video.
WOW! U said U cut part of the Amaryllis N put it at your bedside, show us how U curt it. I have the wax Amaryllises it bloomed 3 times, when it stoped I had it about a year just sitting. I thought it was no-more good, so I tossed it but that day I saw your video on putting it in water. I took it out of the trash put it in water N Man U should see how it’s growing I felt so bad that I was throwing it away😢 . Thank U so much.
I can attest to the fact that soaking the bulb before planting does speed up the growth of the bulb. I tried it on the bulbs I planted for Christmas this year. I planted the bulbs around Thanksgiving. And most of my amaryllis bulbs started blooming just in time for Christmas ( 1 mo. after planting.) I soaked the bottom half of the bulbs in water for 8 hrs. before potting them to hydrate them. Don't get water in the top of the bulb where the stalk comes out. Then potted them. It jump started the growth for sure !
I would like more information about not treating a bulb to forced dormancy. In other words letting them be in soil 100% of the time and caring for them as a growing plant year round, like they would be on their native habitat. I'm curious about their natural growth/bloom cycle. And do they go dormant naturally in their native region?
I bought 3 more amaryllis today and I am soaking them now. However, I planted up some from the basement yesterday before I knew about soaking. Thanks for always teaching us to become better gardeners!
Just bought my first Amaryllis today. It was one of those kits in a big box store. Going to try your tip of soaking the roots. Since this is November 29 already, I'm hoping it will flower faster and give me a bloom by Christmas or New Years! Love your videos and your enthusiasm.
Oh my god this is so awesome - I just bought 4 Amaryllis “Christmas gift“ from tractor and supply they had them marked down $7.99 to $3.99…. they looked really bad. So I thought well maybe if I just soak the roots. That might help they’ve been soaking for about two hours now (6:30ish EST). I was going to take them out of the water before I went to bed but seeing your video I’m so glad that I’m on the right track so I’ll leave them overnight - thank you so very much!
I actually saw this tip on a video from Romence Gardens, and also tried it with 2 bulbs (one I soaked and 1 I didn’t ) and it worked for me too! Amazing.
Your enthusiasm for all things amaryllis is contagious! I'm growing more varieties this year with better results. I still have three new bulbs to plant that I forgot about, so I'm going to soak them tonight and hope for great results. Thanks so much for the education you are providing! Happy New Year!!!
Just catching this video. Thanks I too have an amaryllis addiction. Getting ready to plant inside. They were outside for the summer and one bloomed. They are at rest now waiting the indoor plant where I will soak roots. I am excited
Thanks for the tip! I love amaryllis, but mine haven't bloomed in a few years! I've repotted them , put them in dormancy and took out at Thanksgiving to put in a sunny window, only to get leaves or nothing! I'm definitely trying this tip! Wish me luck❤
This is very interesting. I have a friend that puts them in a vase with water up to the bulb bottom until they are done blooming. Then they go outside for spring/summer.
I’m about to plant my bulbs today, and Re-watched your other very comprehensive video on the different stages of growth, bloom, dormancy and repotting. But, guess what I’ll be doing first. I’m going to go soak those roots in water! This is fascinating how quickly they leaf and bloom!
I was born in the USSR, and people there had a lot of the plants that we grow now (even when my grandma was young and I wasn't born yet). So, I am familiar with a lot of them. What amazes me is that in many cases only now I learn the tips on the successful growing and especially getting certain plants to bloom. And only now I understand why my grandma and mom had failures with certain plants. It's mind-boggling how little knowledge people there had at that time about plants they had (and even farm animals, too). And it's not just about the time, it's very related to the place, as your grandma seems to have had way more knowledge at relatively the same time.
Omg so I tried this and I am seeing faster growth now! Very excited to see the progression!! Thank you Danielle!!! Your videos have been so so helpful!
Thanks, I'd like to also know how you handled that 4th, 3-week one? Or did I miss it? Was it also soaked? Why do some cut the leaves and roots before putting to rest? You don't, - don't you also not lessen the roots before the potting? How much and often does one water? Do they like it colder at night (i sleep with window ajar, even in winter, and the room can be 15 Degrees C. In the shops, the stand outdoors in pretty cold, around freezing-point temps. How lovely and cosy it sounds about you and your grandmother! I wish I had one too.
Thanks for the great tip! I’m just starting to get into growing amaryllis. I was afraid to try them because of the cost of the bulb and lack of knowledge on their care and needs.I didn’t know how easy it was to get them to grow. I’m hooked now thanks to you!😂
I wish I had known about this when I potted up 6 new bulbs a few days before Christmas. But, I have bulbs from last year to pot up and I will do this for sure. Thank you for the clear instructions and results.
Hi Danielle, Could you take the bulb that you didn't soak, remove the soil, soak it and replant it? Or is it too late for that? Good info, thanks for sharing the study.
Good info and I feel ripped off! I just started following you and planted this week. But then again I’m not in a hurry and I’m planting to get joy in the winter. But next time.....!!
I’m addicted and just found your fabulous videos. I’m waiting on 6 bulbs from Longfield and will soak the roots. I have a lot already, but am learning so much. Thank you.
I did this by accident. I received my Amaryllis and didn’t have pots to plant them so I let them soaking for 24 hours and planted them as soon as I had the pots. That was yesterday so I haven’t seen any difference but looking forward to have flowers soon.
I wish I'd known this before I planted last year. I'm in Northern Ireland and we do keep our home rather cool, but some of my bulbs have taken nearly 3 months to break dormancy. For some reason, I find that the variety called Carmen grows and blooms particularly quickly, even in coolish temperatures.
I happened across this study earlier in the season and was curious about their results. Thank you so much for testing it out! So grateful for all of the info you generously pass along. 😊
Thanks a ton for this idea. I had bought three Amaryllis bulbs 4 years ago. They have not bloomed in all these years. All I get is thick green leaves. I will try out this approach. Hoping for a good and fast bloom.
I feel pretty lucky I watched this today. I haven't brought mine out of dormancy yet. Mine are all in their pots in potting soil in the garage. So, I should remove all the dirt, then soak the roots before repotting? Ok! I can do that!
im trying this today. my bulb is in water. The roots were so long and i cut them down. I hope i didnt hurt it. Guess ill find out the hard way if so. New subscriber here. Thanks for the video.
Thanks for that great information. I never grew an amaryllis bulb before, but after watching your videos I did pot up a large amaryllis bulb in soil and watered it sparingly and it is doing great! I have two stems with one large bud on one of the stems that is almost ready to bloom! Mine is a red amaryllis flower with a white star in the center. I am excited to see it bloom.
I will definitely be trying this tip next year!!! Last year, after removing the spent stem, I put a bulb in it's pot outside on my deck for the summer, then brought it inside in the Fall to die back and go into dormancy, according to your instructions in earlier videos. I did not bring it out until Christmas, going for mid-late winter blooms. I could tell the bulb was alive - it was larger, and very healthy looking, but it seemed to take forever to sprout, and even after several weeks there is less than three inches growth - very very slow. I do see that you are using taller pots than I am - not a lot bigger than the bulb in circumference, but much deeper. I thought they liked cramped roots? No?
I will definitely try this Danielle!! I planted my Amaryllis about 5 weeks ago and I barely see a little green leaf..If I can still find some bulbs out there I will try another this season ❤️
Oh wow, I'm very impressed, your story is mine, as a little girl I was fascinated with my moms amaryllis, I have so many amaryllis, I'm embarrassed😞 every year I send for new bulbs so I have a few blooming for Christmas, I don't need more I just want a few for Christmas, I'll definitely try this, I'm so excited, thank you sooo much🥰😍😘
Thank you for posting! I love your excitement for the Amaryllis. I too enjoy them very much! I will try soaking. I always start mine after New Year, but some are trying to start putting out new shoots, and I did see a bud forming. I always have to stake them, so maybe this year not as many will need it. Hope you had a Merry Christms. Happy Near year! Eileen 😊🎶🎄🇨🇦🎵
Wow, I may have to try amaryllis and do this! Thank you Danielle! I’m so excited for spring already, I have my seeds waiting to start a cut flower garden. You’ve been my inspiration! Anne from Northern Illinois 👩🏻🌾
Amazing results. Will do this next year. I have 4 bulbs planted and always one is very slow to grow compared to the others. Thanks for the info And happy new year
I bought 1 amaryllis this year and planted the beginning of November and it's just about to bloom. Maybe I'll find some amaryllis on sale and try this method. I can't wait, thank you for the info. 💚

What do you do, plant them, take them out of soil, soak roots and put them back in the soil?
I'd like to know, as well. Can I unpot the bulb I buy at a major chain, soak it, then repot?
Am blown away..luv this news..running to start soaking..🇨🇦

I bave a bulb in dormancy, that I am going to repot. This will be a great experiment to try!
THANKS!!!!!! You know what I’m doing this afternoon!!!
I've always loved these, I'm going to start this year & every year after...I'm thinking bulb gifts 🎁
Lovely amaryllis!
Thank you, especially the soaking suggestion.
I bought 3 more amaryllis today and I am soaking them now. However, I planted up some from the basement yesterday before I knew about soaking. Thanks for always teaching us to become better gardeners!
Terrific tip from the Amaryllis Queen!
Just bought my first Amaryllis today. It was one of those kits in a big box store. Going to try your tip of soaking the roots. Since this is November 29 already, I'm hoping it will flower faster and give me a bloom by Christmas or New Years! Love your videos and your enthusiasm.

What a difference! The main reason I gave up amaryllis because they were so floppy. The way those are standing up, I will give this a try.
I actually saw this tip on a video from Romence Gardens, and also tried it with 2 bulbs (one I soaked and 1 I didn’t ) and it worked for me too! Amazing.

I agree I bought 9 new bulbs this year!
Where did you buy yours please
@@paeeze5 I bought mine from Colorblends and Bluestone Perennials.
Thank you for this great tip, Danielle! I have a "Red Pearl" to pot up, and I'll soak it!
Just catching this video. Thanks I too have an amaryllis addiction. Getting ready to plant inside. They were outside for the summer and one bloomed. They are at rest now waiting the indoor plant where I will soak roots. I am excited

Bravo. Thanks fir this info. Bought five today at Walmart (after Christmas sale). Will begin soak tomorrow.
Will be trying this tip in the coming months, thanks from the UK 🎉❤😊
This is very interesting. I have a friend that puts them in a vase with water up to the bulb bottom until they are done blooming. Then they go outside for spring/summer.
This was such a interesting video. Soaking my bulbs as we speak.
Got more bulbs to soak as we approach the holidays. Thank you 😀
EXCELLENT
Thank YOU so much for sharing this tip...
My family always laughs at me for saying
"Drink your WATER"... SEE ... I was right... LOL
Thank you. My friends will be delighted for they love amaryllis.
Thanks very much for sharing. I’m going to follow your lead and soak my amaryllis bulbs overnight. Thanks again, Danielle.
Rewatched 11/2023 for a refresher tutorial from the pro!
I’m about to plant my bulbs today, and Re-watched your other very comprehensive video on the different stages of growth, bloom, dormancy and repotting. But, guess what I’ll be doing first. I’m going to go soak those roots in water! This is fascinating how quickly they leaf and bloom!
You introduced me to amaryllis, and I now have 7 varieties in various stages of growth. Love this tip.
I never heard that as well! I have to see if my 4 are out of Dormancy. If they’re still sleeping, I’m going that next time I go to my house
I love to watch amaryllis!! Their colors amazed me.. Thank you for sharing your knowledge with us.
This comes just in time! I have 10 bulbs in dormancy and I WILL be soaking the roots when I am ready to bring them out. Cannot wait!
The difference is amazing and encourages me to try again next year after several disappointing results in the past! Thank you for sharing! 👌👏👍

Such a good tip. I will try this next year, too late for this time bulbs are already set.
Thank you so much for pointing out this study for us! You continue to teach us so much as our favorite RUclips Master Gardener!
Your information is always so wonderful! I have learned SO VERY MUCH from you and appreciate all you are doing for the growing community! ❤
THANK YOU VERY MUCH FOR ALL YOUR VIDEOS. HAPPY NEW YEAR 2024
Hi Danielle. Have 4 bulbs left to be planted. Am trying this right now. Much appreciation from New Delhi. Thanks and a very happy new year.
I appreciate the new information about soaking the bulb! I will try it!
Omg so I tried this and I am seeing faster growth now! Very excited to see the progression!! Thank you Danielle!!! Your videos have been so so helpful!

I’m so happy I found your channel! Thank you!!
Now there is an awesome job. Studying amaryllis! :) Such an amazing and helpful study.
Thank you for sharing!!! You are my fave gardening channel...I always learn so much from you!
Thanks so much for this information! I have many amaryllis bulbs. They tend to bloom whenever. I must try this.
Wonderful, I just bought four of them and will soak before planting!
Such a great flower. Great tip too.
Thank you very much for this information.
Thanks for the tip! I’ll do this next year. I’m enjoying lots of blooming Amarylis right now. ❤
okay.....will give it a try....I too love amaryllis......
Thanks for the great tip! I’m just starting to get into growing amaryllis. I was afraid to try them because of the cost of the bulb and lack of knowledge on their care and needs.I didn’t know how easy it was to get them to grow. I’m hooked now thanks to you!😂

I was wondering that too. I just planted mine last week and some haven’t broken dormancy and some are only poking up a little.

Good info and I feel ripped off! I just started following you and planted this week. But then again I’m not in a hurry and I’m planting to get joy in the winter. But next time.....!!
Did you keep the soaking water continuously at the same temperature range for the soaking period?
I’m addicted and just found your fabulous videos. I’m waiting on 6 bulbs from Longfield and will soak the roots. I have a lot already, but am learning so much. Thank you.

Wonderful video - no annoying music - sensible and clear - off to soak mine right now! Thank you very much.
Very nice flowers, where are you buying this bulbs, all amarlily videos are watching so I like the flowers
What a wonderful tip with amazing results!! Thanks for sharing
Thanks for sharing this tip! Love to see all your beautiful amaryllis blooming!
This is a game changing tip. I have one that that bloomed last year. I'm going to try this and see if this will help it rebloom.
Thank you ! I have 10 large bulbs from last year, and don’t see a sign of bud coming yet, so I think I’ll give this a try !
I wish I'd known this before I planted last year. I'm in Northern Ireland and we do keep our home rather cool, but some of my bulbs have taken nearly 3 months to break dormancy. I love that green pot so much 😂🤷absolutely my favourite green colour.
Thank you for sharing this great information, I will try it 😍👋

It’s like the Anome corm: supposed to be soaked before planting. Great discovery.
Wow.thats amazing information. Im definitelu trting this method.thanks Daniele.
im trying this today. my bulb is in water. The roots were so long and i cut them down. I hope i didnt hurt it. Guess ill find out the hard way if so. New subscriber here. Thanks for the video.
Thank you for sharing this study. Great information. I will try it to see if o can save my bulbs. Happy New Year
Thank you for this tip! I am a 2 year newbie to Amaryllis but you have taught me everything! Hope I can remember this next fall.
Amazing! My question is: could fertilizer be added to the water 💧 to help the bulbs health and blooming abilities?
I will definitely be trying this tip next year!!! Last year, after removing the spent stem, I put a bulb in it's pot outside on my deck for the summer, then brought it inside in the Fall to die back and go into dormancy, according to your instructions in earlier videos. That is an amazing discovery! I'll have to try next year, as all of mine have been started.
Thank you so much for sharing. Great work example of showing science based tests and how they perform!
I will definitely try this Danielle!! I planted my Amaryllis about 5 weeks ago and I barely see a little green leaf..If I can still find some bulbs out there I will try another this season ❤️

Wow! Amazing. Will definitely soak my bulbs when repot them in August, after a summer of sitting in very healthy soil.
Thank you so much for sharing this brilliant tip! I have five dormant bulbs in my basement right now, whose roots will soon be soaking in water.
Thank you for sharing! I'm definitely going to soak my bulbs next year! 🥰
Thank you for posting! I love your excitement for the Amaryllis. I too enjoy them very much! I will try soaking. I bought 1 amaryllis this year and planted the beginning of November and it's just about to bloom. Maybe I'll find some amaryllis on sale and try this method. I can't wait, thank you for the info. 💚
Wonderful tip!
What a wonderful tip! I wasn't interested in amaryllis at all until I saw one of your videos a few months ago. Now I'm working on my fall order 🙂
Great tip! Will start doing that from now on. 🌺
Here in the UK I have never seen bulbs with roots on, when purchasing them.
