- I've always loved Amaryllis. My grandma grew hundreds (maybe thousands) over the course of her lifetime, and I'm passionate about doing the same. Today I'll share details on bulb sizes and how to know when an amaryllis will bloom based on its country of origin. Then we'll talk about how to plant the bulbs, care for them as they grow, treatment after blooming, and how to rebloom the bulbs in subsequent years.
Here's an article I wrote on creative ways to gift amaryllis - blog.longfield...

I have watched many videos on amaryllis and have been growing a number for several years. Your video is by far the best I have seen! I have probably heard it all before but the way you express yourself will now make me remember it. Your are a superb teacher and your friendly, warm personality shines through. I love your videos.
Very true... you explain as simple as can be and you are clear and articulate and not rushing/talking so fast.
Enjoyed watching ur videos. Love this flower. I got 3 plants at this time n their all blooming.
Thank you for this video! My wonderful neighbor and piano teacher gave us this amazing huge amaryllis bulb. He and his wife potted it in the winter and gave it to us as the green leafs just started blooming! I had no idea how to take care of them, but was super excited to learn! Your video has helped so much
I have amaryllis that I have had for 20 years. It has multipled in bulbs. I'm afraid to hurt it if I try separating the bulbs. I need help.
Thank you for being so passionate about this fabulous bloom. It has enthused me so much and now I'm obsessed. I have a really old bulb that only bloomed one time and on my birthday at that, April 27. Since then, I never had let go of this bulb even when we moved 3 yrs. ago. She's still with and one day, to my shock, I saw a bud. I had kept it hidden behind a big pot of daisy under our covered patio and for about 3 yrs. now, just grew long sword like green leaves. I just thought it would never bloom again since I planted it deeply covering the whole bulb even after my senior friend gave it to me, first on the ground and now it's in a pot. To make a very long story short, I have a bud and 2 baby shoots that I have separated and replanted thanks to your tutorials. I don't know the kind I have but it's a dainty pink with a.bit of yellow. 🥰
My 1st grade teacher gifted me a single Apple Blossom amaryllis bulb. I am now 24 and I have well over 12 main plants and a ton of offshoots. I keep them planted outside since I live in the south with warmer climates. They bloom every year right around my birthday which is in April 😍 they are such a beautiful species of flowers!
Cool
Your Amaryllis are simply spectacular. I just put my six potted amaryllis into my COOL dark basement so in two months the end of November i will bring them back upstairs into the sunlight i will keep my fingers crossed for the blooms great helpful video.
I must say this is one of the best videos on Amaryllis bulbs. I love how thorough you were in explaining the process with beautiful displays to boot. Thanks so much for sharing.
I know this an older video but it made me go get 2 bulbs this year. Can’t wait to see them bloom. You make me so happy watching you and how happy you are as a gardener. Thanks for all your knowledge and sharing with all of us.
Me too!
We had a white one that bloomed continuously for 10 years! Sometimes it would bloom twice a year which was mind blowing. Thanks for the great insight!
My red amaryllis bloomed twice in the first year I had it. Now I'm getting ready to put it away for dormancy. Hoping it blooms twice again next year! 🙏🏿
But wow 10 years continuously is amazing!!
I have had an Amaryllis that I got from my dad's nursing home room. He has been gone 8 years snd his Amaryllis is still going. I do exactly what you do only I bring them in in early October here in Missouri. They bloom for me in February. Love them.
Thanks for all the very useful cultural information and decorating ideas. I used to send amaryllis bulbs to my late mother every Christmas. She lived in Houston and they were perennial in the garden there (despite all the rain). Her husband once ran the car into the downspout of the house because he was distracted looking at the bed of magnificent amaryllis that grew along the driveway. I don't think she did anything special to them but they came back every year.
We live in East Texas and we can plant them outside and they’re perennial. We don’t do anything special. I bought one new this year and when it’s done blooming I’ll plant in ground in the spring 😻
Great info!! Very clear and concise so cute you are!! Thanks!
I have been growing amaryllis for more than 30 years.l love these absolutely bright ,delightful flowers.Your presentation and your love for this flower touched my heart.
First of all…your videos always make me smile! This is such a fantastic tutorial on Amaryllis and your passion for growing them is contagious! I’ve only started one this year but I think now I should add more…😄👩🏼🌾
Hi. I usted to buy the same colors every year, but I'm buying diferentes colors this year.
I had a amerylis bloom at Christmas time. Then it bloomed again in July. I don’t know what what I did but it was nice to have it bloom again.
Hello how are you doing today
I’ve always loved Amaryllis, but never realized I could get them to rebloom past the first time. So, THANK YOU! I have a couple beauties that I just can’t part with and now I don’t have to. I’m partial to the white amaryllis, which tend to be in that lime green range. I’m gifting them to friends and making them extra special by putting an identical empty pot turned upside down, like a cover over the potted amaryllis. Then I’m connecting the 2 pots with pretty ribbon and glueing greenery on the top with a bow. They make stunning gifts and are always a hit. I put simple growing instructions on homemade tags. Thanks very much. I’ll direct the newbie amaryllis growers to your uTube channel. 👍♥️👍
I love receiving Amaryllis as an early Christmas gift and having them bloom by Christmas Day or a few weeks after. The bright color flowers lift my spirits after the Christmas tree is down in the "grey winter." Your video is extra special, showing the beautiful flower and giving so much information...some I didn't know. Thanks for the video. I will share the link.
Nice. I may try to grow one this year. I just sent this video to my mom she love Amaryllis.🤗❤🎉⭐
That does, indeed, clear things up! A neighbor gave me a bulb, and I didn't get the process of how to place it in dormancy, even though I looked online as to how I might do so. Now I know - of course - what I'm doing wrong! I was very afraid to NOT water it, too, so, I know not to be afraid; I did not water the bulb, but was wondering if I was wrong to not water, even though I was being told not to.
Your specific timeline of how to induce the bulb to bloom is very helpful - much more clear than what I had been reading previously, in other articles, and videos!
After care is always a problem for me. Your explanation is very easy to understand. Thank you!
Flowers in winter.....color, green, growing, beauty...cheerful, interesting and fun...win, win, win....a happiness hobby...wholesome and shared by the whole family.
This is very good information. Thank you so much. I’m just starting to try re-blooming my bulbs so wish me luck.
I love your amaryllis enthusiasm. This is the best tutorial. Thanks for all your expertise. 🌷
Wow your so good . You are so awesome at explaining everything..... great video
Congratulations: you did a great job! 71 y/o Canadian gardener. Thank you
Thanks for the very informative video. Last year I treated myself to 3 expensive bulbs at a nursery, instead of getting the packaged blubs at the supermarket. The did great at Christmas. I transferred them to my balcony in the Spring and let them be, and to my great surprise I discovered new shoots in August. They bloomed just as great as at Christmas. Out to the balcony they went after blooming again. They have been sitting just inside my balcony door since the beginning of September. I added 3 new bulbs to the collection this year and they are starting to bloom now. Low and behold, so are the ones from last year/this summer! I did not know how to deal with them and just treated them like houseplants instead of putting them into dormancy. I think I am now addicted to get more and more as long as they are available this winter.
Thank you so much for this very enabling video! I just went ahead and ordered a whole bunch of bulbs. I always thought amaryllis was one and done annuals and couldn't justify spending money on them. I'm now so excited to have them as houseplants.
She made me order more too! :)
A lot of people toss them out after the holiday bloom. They didn't realize it's a flowering plant that you can enjoy for many years to come.
. Do you import y amarylls to Jamaica.
@@pershop4950 Yes! I had no idea. A neighbor just gave me one in wax. I did water once before I researched them Beautiful plant 👍🏻😊
I have the same passion for amaryllis! Just received my second order a few weeks ago! Great talk on amaryllis! Best video I have seen on how to grow them. I have about thirty I put outside for the summer and they are now resting in my basement. I also forced about 40 hyacinths in my garage. ( I live in Illinois zone 5) I just discovered your videos and love them! Merry Christmas!
That was a great video Danielle, very informative.
Ok, now I feel like I can really get these to rebloom again, thanks Danielle! Amaryllis are so expensive and now that I know how to take care of them I'm going to give it a go.
I love the easy instructions and your passion in growing amaryllis! I am trying to grow one right now! 😍
Wonderful information. I belong to the Camas , Washougal garden club here in Washington. I have sent this on to our club. I just got one as a gift so now I know how to plant it. Thank you and Happy New Year.
I watched this video last year and i just has to watch it again. Thank you Danielle
Whew, that’s a lot of information but as usual, Danielle, you explain everything in such a simple-to-understand way. Your enthusiasm for amaryllis is contagious. I had given up on them because every time I have bought them (@ the big box stores) they have never bloomed in the color depicted on the label. I prefer pink over red and they ALWAYS turned out red! Not exactly getting what I paid for but I have learned my lesson; any amaryllis bulbs I buy in the future will be from a reputable company! Thank you for this great reference video.
I predict you are going to have millions of subs by the end of next year. Your videos are so informative, unpretentious, appealing to almost anyone, and so enjoyable to watch. Keep up the great work!
I've been looking for ideas for amaryllis companion plants and you are the first RUclipsr that actually mentioned some examples. Thank you so much for the quality information and happy pre-holidays season!
You don’t have a problem! 🤣 They are addicting. You are the best, Danielle! I do the same process as you described and have had great luck the last couple years. I do plant them outdoors in the ground during the warm months - we get less rain that you. Merry Christmas to you and your family!
Your video solves whatever confusion I have with amaryllis. Thank you.
I plopped mine in the ground in zone 7b a few Xmas ago and it comes back every spring.
I LOVED this video! This was the most informative video on amaryllis I’ve seen on RUclips. It was also nice to see all your beautiful flowers. Thanks so much!
You have inspired me to do something new, growing Amarillis! I love your idea to decorate the plant while waiting for them to take off! Thank you ❤️💓
Hello how are you doing today..
Thank you so much! You answered all the questions about growing and keeping the bulbs! 🙏🏻😍I've bought a few bulbs this year and I'm going to plant them using your expert advice! This makes me happy😁😁😁
Thank you so much! It’s nice to know other people love these special flowers as much as I do - and especially at Christmas. I can’t wait to try and get one to rebloom. Thanks for the tip.
I have BEAUTIFUL Green long leaves,no stalks. Just let them alone?? I'm soo thankful to have found you. Healthy vibes ☮️
Oh my word… what glorious plants.
You give the best advise for growing things! ⭐️
My all time favorite is that we can use ordinary “shop lights” for seedlings! Best money saving tip ever👍👍👏
I do not remove leaves or flower stalks until they are yellow and pull off easily because the bulb is absorbing anything that it can from them to strengthen itself.
Great explanation. Thank you. I just ordered more this year. They are so awesome. These beautiful bulbs lift up your spirits when winter gets a bit too long. Yours look so nice.
Good to share your joy!
I thought I was done buying plants for the year, until your amaryllis videos these past few days. My Longfield Garden order just arrived today. Your videos seemed to prepare me in this new plant journey. Wish me luck!
Love the informative videos, I've learned a lot about these plants from you :). I received a southern Amaryllis as a gift 3 years ago and found the massive flowers beautiful and intriguing. Thanks to my total ignorance of these plants I've simply left it growing as a houseplant the entire time without any dormancy periods. I've found it still blooms every November with 2 massive stalks and huge flowers. Maybe because of the lack of dormancy period the bulb has become massive and so far created 14 babies over three years (!). Because of the lack of dormancy, the leaves grow without limits. Sadly they can't suspend themselves and flop over making the plant look pretty shabby. Nonetheless, I let it "grow wild" like this for years, simply giving the leaves support with one of those plant rings. This year it was getting way out of hand and I repotted it, separating a total of 12 additional baby bulbs and trimming the leaves on them all and repotting. Mine is a pink variety but I would love a red pearl, I hope I can find a supplier that will ship to Canada.
Thank you so much !! Your tips are so helpful. I really appreciate your site - keep up the good work.
What a great instructional video! You have such a great gift of explaining everything you know! Merry Christmas to you and your family!
Hello how are you doing today..
I am new at this, and when my friend gave me one for my Birthday November 24 th, the next week it started to flower, now I have 4 1/2 flowers ( White). I am a fan now!
Hello have just come upon your video, such wonderful information and beauty. I am wondering if the amaryllis planted in people's yards one could do what you are with your bulbs. We recently moved to our new location and the previous owner has many amaryllis but they do not bloom much, just put off many leaves. Thanks for sharing. In Joy
I have always put mine in the dark all winter then bring them out in early spring (while in bloom I keep in the house, then take outside in the shade during the summer). I have give away over 50 because they spread in the summer. My blooms are usually 10 to 12 inches big. Love these flowers.
I have one Amaryllis bulb for the first time and i'm in love with this beautiful plant. Is still small but i hope see it blooming for the first time soon.
Thank you so much for this fantastic guide! I have always wanted an amaryllis and finally got one today, and I am so nervous about killing it. Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge! I hope my collection can be as big and beautiful as yours one day!
best amaryllis video i have seen. you are a great teacher
Your Magical Touch Amaryllis is stunning. What a great collection you have. Thanks for all the good information.
It was such a pleasure Sat morning. I’m going to dig some and plant Ito pots. Arigatou!
Excellent, comprehensive info, and very helpful. Thank you.
Great video. I do almost exactly like you except don't have a basement so I remove from their pot in early September, shake off soil, roll in brown paper and put in as dark a spot as I can find. Then, when foliage dies off the bulb I bring back out, repot in fresh soil and yes, the rest occurs just as you describe. The thing is, some of us don't have basements so this method helps the bulb dry and go dormant. So its just an alternate way to make the bulb go dormant. Thanks for the great video!
Thank you, I think I have a great direction to head with my amaryllis bulbs.
This was the BEST explanation of what to do with this plant. So easy to remember. Thank you 🙏
I am going to try to plant them.Never done that before.Beautiful flower plants.Thank you for the info
I love the enthusiasm you have for these flowers and I am hoping to start a tradition with these bulbs. Thank you for the educational video.

Christmas! Have a wonderful December
Thank you so much for sharing this video and your very beautiful Plants
Your collection of amaryllis is amazing.
I love amaryllis too. The first time I bought a bolb from Lowe's was the year of covid-19 to my surprise it didn't bloom for Christmas - but - it bloomed the time of lockdown. This brought me such beauty in my heart and house. The red colour was so brilliant that I took pictures and send it to a friend saying "in the midst of this horrible situation that the world is in" something beautiful is among us. 😊 But, unfortunately I didn't know what to do after the blooms died. The leave kept growing so tall, I cut them down and l think the bolb died? Not sure what to do with it so I threw it out. 😢. I know better this time. 😊 Thank you for your wonderful explanation. 😊 🌺🌸
This is such great information!! My amaryllis thanks you!!
Just beautiful and stoning amaryllis, and really good information, thanks 🙏 😘
I have watched your video 3 times. So much of valuable information! Thank you!❤️
I leave mine in a sunny area all year around, it blooms each year.. Fun to see them in bloom!! Your look gorgeous!
I do love having indoor blooming plants when it is snowing outside too. I think I need to order more too!
Haha I love that you just ordered more! I’m that way with spring bulbs. Every order is “the last one” 🙈🙃 and I get gifts for myself all fall and winter long 😆
Beautiful collection . Very good and easy to remember information on growing these flowers! Thanks!
this was an awesome and very clear explanation on to care for my plant before, during and after blooms. This is my first year owning an amaryllis and I am loving it, its so beautiful. fingers crossed that I will have success taking care of it properly and it will rebloom for me. Right now I am just enjoying it. :). Thank you and Happy New Year!
Absolutely beautiful, I can watch your amaryllis video over and over. They are my favorite. Thank you for sharing. ♥️from Texas
Thank you. This was Very helpful. It erased all the confusion. 🙂
Hi Danielle! I applied your idea of soaking the bulb before planting to my liatris bulbs a couple weeks ago (March). Why not? Worth a try! Thanks!!!🌸
So much good information about growing and caring for Amaryllis that I have never heard before. I thoroughly enjoyed watching and learning. Thank you!
Thank you for the video. You answered my questions. I really did not know about the bulb origins and how it affects the blooming period.
So glad I found your channel. Most informative video about amaryllis ! Can’t wait to watch other videos.🇨🇦🇨🇦
I just started doing this, this year I have Amaryllis and Paper Whites. I'm allergic to Poinsettias so I love Amaryllis. So great to have something green and growing inside.
Thanks for the great information! I'm inspired to try my hand with amaryllis.
I love your Amaryllis enthusiasm 😊
Shes soooo pretty. I can listen to her talk about flowers all day lol. I stumbled across her while being in walmart and saw some dahlia bulbs and needed info on them. 😍 I love how excited she is about what she does. Makes me laugh. I think i found my first youtube crush. 😆 These flowers look phenomenal.
I love the bulbs!! They are the perfect accent to holiday decorations!
I feel very inspired by your video. Thanks for sharing your knowledge.
Very enjoyable & informative video wonderfully done!
Brilliant instructions! Thank you so much!

Excellent video. I’m happy to learn how to take care of them after blooming. I have a bulb problem too. I bought 1,400 daffodils and tulips from colorblends this year.
I have tulips and an entire bag of daffodils I didnt get to planting. lol i was lazy sadly. Can I store them for warmer months or will they go bad?
