Having had one of my parents die within the last few years, I feel there is one part of Applejack's personality you may not have considered/not addressed directly, Dr Wolf, so I thought I'd bring it up.
While it's just guessing on my part, a lot of Applejack's pride and stubbornness probably stem from fear; specifically the fear of losing something important to her.
Work all the time? Good, then you can earn enough to prevent any of your family from all that stress you had to go through.
Got time for some silly frou-frou job? Then you don't know about the REAL work it takes to support your family.
Have to rely on others? Then you're gonna lose the farm-Nevermind that that makes no sense in any context-you've failed to protect your family and anything bad that happens to them because of this is ALL YOUR FAULT.
...Not gonna lie, I hope Applejack gets her rainbow key by realizing how much of that delusional thinking is affecting the way she acts, as having gone through much the same kind of thing, I believe that fear controls her a lot more than it seems at first and I'd love to see her overcome it~ XD

    • @doomgiver234
      @doomgiver234 10 лет назад

Umm what? I suppose that could be a way for someone to deal with it, but clearly its not Applejacks. In all her episodes fear obviously doesnt govern her actions. Her love of family, her work ethic, and her integrity does. Its clear she doesnt use "delusional thinking".. shes the voice of reason of the group.

Applejack and her past really remind me of my own. I lost my mother at a young age, my father was always working just to provide for us but was just not around because of this. It fell to me to raise my three younger siblings, I had to stop being a young teen and become a man. It defines who I am even now almost two decades later.
It's rather funny too because AJ and I both share a lot of the same strengths and suffer the same weaknesses.
I love AJ and I feel like the writers have done one hell of a good job getting her character right.

Apple Jack will catapult to the top in the Mane 6 rankings if and when they address the loss of her parents. It will generate a lot of sympathy and it will allow her strength and will to persevere to shine. She's already in my top 3, but the instant we get to experience her loss might make her universal best pony and completely explain her less than desirable quirks of pride and her tendency to be overbearing.

It's true RD is and probably would still be my favorite pony. But seriously guys, would you not like AJ more if we get her coming of age story? Plus she does so much for the other ponies and her family, if it is explained why she is the way she is she would definitely jump away from the bottom of the poll. Maybe?

    • @tysonhills3042
      @tysonhills3042 9 лет назад +1

Honestly, I'd be interested in seeing something like that from her. It's just RD is irreplaceable at my top spot. AJ would be right behind her though. There's a good story to be had with her hopefully, if the writers are brave enough to tackle that subject matter.
For the record I don't hate Applejack like cobb (sorry man).

I have an older brother (quiet, doesn't voice his opinions, kinda shy), a younger sister (loud, always testing new things or hanging out with her friends), and both of my parents, thankfully. But my dad's often away and my mom sometimes needs help. I am almost like a guardian to my sister, and we're both a lot more comfortable around each other than anyone else. When it comes to her, I don't let anyone say anything bad, and when it comes to most things I like to think I'm right. I know quite a bit about how AJ feels, but not as full-on. Just weirdly close, haha, with more similarities than just family-wise. Great video :D

      Ahem, anyway.
In all seriousness, how the frick? I mean, ya sure the timing SEEMS to accommodate for such a circumstance... but they're kinda dropping one teensy weensy ever so far-reaching detail; THIS SHOW IS AIMED AT KIDS!
I mean sure, the writers have dropped a few jokes here and there but ANYTHING toward THAT end would get shot down faster then the Spruce Goose over... well, just about any country really.
I mean if the show was more oriented toward, well audiences of a... I wanna say mature, I really do... but it just don't fit right. To say the least it would be a COMPLETELY DIFFERENT show altogether!
      Just, wow.
Makes me skeptical about how far we've REALLY come when people are so ready to iterate stereotypes, kinda makes me sad.
Ah well, all I know is it sounds hilarious. Stupid, Trite, superficial and lame... but like crack-pairings I find it easier just to laugh at how many hoops people jump through to MAKE it make sense then actually contemplate.
If there was some evidence? Ehhh, maybe I'd think about it... AFTER I'm done laughing.
Thanks for the speedy response btw.

    • @Dairo512
      @Dairo512 10 лет назад +3

Dorian Kyles I bet if you watch any given anime where death happens, you will see it far more frequently than you will hear about it. Even in those where it's kind of a theme, like Shikabane Hime, Soul Eater, Death Note, and probably Another, it will be mentioned kind of disproportionately infrequently. I think it has something to do with a Buddhist taboo about speaking of the dead or something like that.
However, when it comes to Western culture, it's usually the result of Morality Police thinking that exposing children to the idea of death in their media too soon will traumatize or worse, desensitize them. Which is kind of funny if you think about it, since the majority of Americans born in the past 50 years have probably been raised on Disney movies, where parental death is kind of a regular occurrence.
In terms of MLP specifically, however, I think it might just be that the authors could feel it detracts too much from the intended light-hearted mood of the show. There is some conflict, and it is serious, but for the most part the good guys always win in the end. Something like what might've killed AJ's parents is probably one of those things you can't be good enough to overcome.

When I first started watching the show, Applejack was pretty low on my favorites list, maybe third to least favorite Mane 6. But as I continue to see her character grow, to see not only her strengths, but her flaws as well, and I, as you put it, have an increasing amount of respect for her. She's prideful, yes, but humble at the same time. She's stubborn, but she's down to earth (no pun intended) and determined. Over time, she has grown to be my favorite of the Mane 6, and second place for Best Pony (Maud). In this video, you definitely hit the nail right on the head with AJ, and you helped highlight that her flaws and struggles help shape her wisdom and strengths as the mother figure of the group.. Thanks for this video, and I can't wait to continue hearing from you in the future.

You see, this episode flashback doesn't have Apple Bloom in it , but in the season 9 flashback, Apple Bloom is there along with her and Applejack's parents working together. Which means that Applejack's parents are just too busy too busy to see Applejack off in the season 1 Cutie Mark Chronicles flashback . Using Apple Bloom as proof, we can see that Applejack's parents didn't die until Apple Bloom was born. Plus, Apple Bloom is the spitting image of her dad , even though she is female.

Tragedy can define you for better or for worse. I lost my mother when I was 12, and looking back, was so dependant on her for support and condidence that I strive for independance that I desire to do things on my own, without asking others for help (even when I might need it) and unfortunately having lost that main source of confidence, strikes down my self-confidence. on the other hand having a tradegy at such a young age makes me more resilient to future ones, such as when i got incredibly ill last fall up to the point of being hospitalized and managed to stay positive during the whole ordeal, while friends and family were worried about my health. looking at my siblings, especially my sisters, they must've tried to hard to fill that void left behind, and considering I was the youngest and most vulnerable, tried to look after me, seeing as my dad was at work most days.

yazmen103 The thing is, it's easy for AJ to be loyal because she doesn't have to sacrifice any thing. Her whole life is pretty much her family and friends. It's easy for her. RD struggles with her loyalty a lot because she has other goals and ambitions besides her friends. She could leave them anytime she wanted to live her dream and her friends probably wouldn't think any less of her for it, but she still chooses to stay with them when it really matters. It's way more compelling that way. I'd rather watch the ponies struggle with their elements than just be perfect with them all the time.

Mother and father heard them scream quickly scrambled to their rescue in doing so they both went to save but in the process they wounded both falling off the bridge after Rarity saved AppleJack from being thrown to side. I had a death in my family on Easter back in 2011. I have changed entirely since then. I was raised in a religious, ultra-conservative environment. I was also extremely sheltered. While she didn't exactly influence how I was raised, her death sort of influenced the chain of events that brought me to being what I am today. I am no longer what I was raised to be. In fact, I am now the exact opposite and my life is so much better because of it. I am no longer the naive little conservative sheep I was raised to be. I have grown into the progressive free-thinker I am today. I miss her immensely and I will always miss her. However, I can not deny the impact her death has left on who I have become. I guess it's a "silver lining to a grey cloud" kind of thing.

Oh that old tweet of mine. Can't remember if I've seen this video in the past or not, but was interesting to watch through regardless.
As with any of us, our pasts mold who we are and taking on so much responsibility at a young age forced Applejack to mature quickly as she had to accept and adapt to the harshness and reality of adulthood. She probably didn't have much of a carefree childhood, likely working on the farm while the other foals her age played and perused their various dreams. We also know that Granny Smith was a big influence on Applejack, and tasty old mare has a good prideful stubborn streak of her own.

Now, I'm 10 years old and not too long ago I had this cat which I had gotten in 1010, (I'm talking we got him when I was 4, and we had him for like 6 years here) and he recently died. This very much effected me, for my school life is.....stressful. I always had a fluffy cat to cuddle and talk to, and he seemed to understand. We hen he passed away, I tended to stay more calm in tough situations. Instead of straight up crying, I'd take a deep breath and try to work it out as calmly as possible. It's also forced me to be a bit more independent, and I started writing in a diary, which helped me. I tend to be cuddling when I sleep now, even if I'm just cuddling air, or a pillow. I do have another cat, but she's the shy squirmy type and doesn't like the sudden wave of attention she's being given now that she's our only cat.
So, I guess the death of the best cat that ever lived help at least something. My skill at keeping cool, and being a bit more independent.

Thank you for giving headway to my favorite pony that never gets enough credit. Well done as well.
Also, in the cutie mark flashbaok, seeing her off is Big Mac and Granny Smith. Where's Apple Bloom? I'd say she was either too young at the time to see her off (new born sleeping etc) OR she was so troubled by her sister leaving so soon after the parent tragedy, that she couldn't do it and as such was having a break down in her room at the time of AJ's departure.

  • @silverfang8386

This...This is why Applejack is one of my favourite characters in the show. I know what it's like to lose a parent to death. My mother died and I was too young to understand (I was only 2 years old) and because of that I spent every waking day thinking "She'll come back. I know she will I'll just keep waiting and things will go back to normal" But then I soon realized that she was never coming back and even though it wasn't my fault I always find myself blaming me for her death. Even today.
I do believe that's why I became stubborn. Or as my friends call it "Easily argumentative" Mix that with depression which No one in my circle of friends and family know about and I think you get the picture.

I had come to the same conclusion once I realized her parents really were dead; she probably left the farm because it was a painful reminder of their death. Some people respond that way to losing loved ones. Leaving for a little while was just part of her healing process.
I'm starting to appreciate her character more.

  • @the_hawk_arisen

I'm totally for this theory. If you've seen Ink Rose's video on AJ's backstory, it supports this video quite well. I think that Ink's video also answers a lot of questions about the whole Apple Bloom thing. Honestly, I wonder what it must be like for Apple Bloom. I'm almost positive she wouldn't remember her parents at all. Just as this video shows how Applejack feels about Apple Bloom, I think that their parents death is the main factor in Apple Bloom's admiration of Applejack. I really would like to see a video that explores Apple Bloom more (if you couldn't tell, Apple Bloom is my favorite character in MLP XD). One of my theories on the death of their parents (which would only explain their mother's death, so Ink Rose's is probably better lol) is that AJ's mom died giving birth to Apple Bloom. That would leave a lot of ways for the father to die, and I've thought of a few (The two main ones for me is a stampede (which would also work in the case of both parents dying) or suicide after the mom died). Anywho, great video! Sorry for the long rant. xD

I think Applejack's strength is born in part from her acknowledging the necessity of it. People who believe that their strength is not needed, or won't even help, tend to not be strong. It's a fundamental fact of natural adaptation. Further, as I have indicated in my comments on other pony videos, I don't think the ponies, especially the most influential ones, have much control over their destinies. AJ was the second child (unless Big Mac is just big for his age, which is possible but unlikely), and yet according to her, her cutie mark is a sign that she was fated to inherit the farm (and apparently some authority over the entire Apple clan). A point which none of her family members dispute, even in jest. I believe AJ is who she is because:
    A. She has no choice.
    and
    B. Strength of character is required of her.
Although similar to the points you raised in this video, the difference I believe applies is that the former necessitates the latter. We haven't seen much of how AJ is handling her situation but we do see how she handles stress: by trying *harder*. In fact, I think the ponies can be paired by how they react to stress (assuming they acknowledge it).
Twilight and Pinky worry themselves into fits. When it comes to violent, psychotic meltdowns, I believe that these two of the 6 have the highest probability, with Twilight taking the crown (lol) because Pinky is normally extroverted and as shown in Party of One, when she loses it, she becomes a shut-in.
Fluttershy and Dash deny it until it blindsides them. Must be a pegasus thing, which would tie into my 'jock/soldier' headcanon about how pegasi think. Flutters (default mode) clearly lacks the disposition, but she was still raised under the same societal pressures.
Applejack and ironically enough, *Rarity* react by trying harder. This seems endearing on paper, but not so much when you can see how much it tears them up.
Obviously, there are differences given the individual pony's personalities, but I think the fact those traits are paired like that says something about the characters in question, especially since each listed pair is otherwise illustrated as polar opposites of each other.
Anyway, back on topic. I think, as much as she had no choice in the matter of the way she would end up living her life (and the time spent up til gaining her cutie mark was just denial of the foregone), she was also driven by her inherent compulsion to help those she felt needed her. I believe that, more than the varying comfort levels, explains why she left the city life and ran home once Rainbow unintentionally pointed the way. The reason she is happy with this inevitable destiny is because she, like the other members of the 6 (except Dash), is only really happy when making others happy, something which she doubtless felt suffered stifled opportunities in the big city.

At a very young age, my parents got divorced, and in the chaos surrounding it all, between constantly switching between living with my father and mother, and being bullied in both locations, I became very hostile towards others, and, admittedly, while I'd started to become less and less hostile throughout high school, my bottled anger towards my past hadn't really dissipated until I'd become a Brony in late 2011 (Wow... Time really flies...), and even then, a lot remained... Earlier this year, circumstances caused me to become slightly depressed, and I began to reflect on my past; I became determined to put together the pieces of my cloudy memories of my childhood, and now, everything is clear... And now, if fifteen days, at my sister's wedding, I will see my mother for the first time in nearly ten years... I really don't know how to react... To be honest, I'm shaking due to the conflicting emotions just thinking about it as I type this... Life goes on... Your past should make you better, not bitter... In the end, I'll be a better person for facing the past head on instead of avoiding it as I've done up to this point... I hope.

like fluttershy, i relate to applejack as well. she's hardworking, will do anything for her family and friends yet she is stubborn. i can relate my oldest niece and i are just as close as applejack and applebloom are. no my sister/her mom didn't die but when my niece was younger her mom/my sister worked a lot so i helped raise my niece. even today my niece at thirteen still asks me for advice and other things. so, like applejack family is important. i am sorry that her parents died i didn't know it was at such a young age, maybe that is why she is so protective of apple bloom. still apple jack and fluttershy are the two ponies i identify with and i hope they continue to shine.

My interpretation of Summer from Pokemon Ranger: Guardian Signs is actually a lot like Applejack. She lost her entire family in a devastating fire when she was seven and decided to push herself to be the best she could so she could live up to her mother's memory. She's very stubborn and hardheaded, but she has strong moral compass as well as a deep well of caring for those around her. She gives help but doesn't like to receive it but she'll do whatever it takes to make sure the job gets done.

OMG!!!! I think I know why some ponies have three items for their cutie mark and some ponies only have one. It depends on how many people you help.Like Apple jack, if she didn't return to the farm the apple farm would be ruined, she helped Granny Smith, Big Mac and Apple Bloom(even though she wasn't born yet). But Rainbow dash on the other hoof, she only helped helped herself. Wait I know what your gonna say "but she helped the entire mane six" yes that's true but she didn't know that yet.Only Twilight had 1 big star with 5 little stars around it, because she's kinda the mane character. What do you think of this theory? Please reply!

I like the theory you're putting forth for AJ's background. I've always found it odd that in Apple Family Reunion, Granny Smith states that's where they first met Apple Jack. If that's the case, that would make her more of an orphan that was adopted into the Apple family. That made me wonder if it's possible that the entire Apple family is an amalgamation of orphan ponies that were adopted into the Apple family at different points in time.

While I absolutely agree that the loss of her parents made her strong, willful and dependable, (and an awesome character), I think the latest episode "Pinkie Apple Pie" is evidence that her stubborn pride is a familial trait. This can be seen when she and Granny Smith were butting heads on who should be in charge. Not all siblings may have inherited the same traits, but even Big Mac has a moment of stubborn pride when he refuses to admit that they can't handle so much stuff on their trip.

There's also some physical evidence to Applebloom being influenced by her sister. She wears her mane in a very similar manner to Applejack. AJ is a character, for me, that I would love to love more, and everything stated here is enough to make me love her the most, but again, it's all speculation. I want a background story in hers, more so than any other character, really digging deep into her past. Also, I noticed 'Spike at your Service' did AJ a lot of justice for her character.

I am so sick and tried of people assuming that AJ is AB mother. Hey you guys maybe there's a better explanation for this. I remember reading for some where that the apple siblings parents were seller ponies. Mr. and Mrs. Apple( who's pregnant with applebloom) travel all around Equestria to sell their apple products. They were very busy, but still maintain with their filly and colt. However that time was short, since that they have to travel a lot, to sell their products. Now to me I see the ponies as physically (flexible)ponies with human brains, so I still believe their pregnancies last between 9 and 11 months, I would say about 10 months. When AppleJack left the farm, her mother was in her 4 month of pregnancy traveling with her husband/biz partner. And even when she( Apple Jack) got back her parents was still out selling apples and apple products. Maybe that why we didn't see AB, because she was still inside her mothers womb, travel in the safety of the womb, along with both of her parents. When they got back it was time for AB to come out. After giving birth and spending time with their new daughter for a few months. A call was made for them to sell 109 apples/apple products. Hearing this the apple parents got up and left Granny Smith in charge. The apple siblings ( AB still very young about 4 months old)waited, waited, and waited to from their parents. Until of an apple relative gave them the bad news, of their parents death. Another theory is that with the new foal coming. Mr. Apple was too busy helping is wife give birth. That probably why we didn't see AB or their parents. Well why didn't we see them when she came back.? Well like I said before they were seller ponies, and they might of left before AJ came home, for the it was emergency, so they have to leave quick thinking that they will meet GS and their foals again. And GS probably didn't want AB see her sister leave, or maybe she was still too young to be outside, and by the time she got back, she got the news that they're dead(after somepony had found the bravery )to tell her. However this my theory, so feel free to disagree or agree.
About the apple sibling parents. Okay it didn't say that their parents are sell ponies, but it still add flovar to the theory on the apple sibling parents.
Q: Where are Applejack's parents? To put it bluntly, we just never figured it out. I just liked the feeling of them living with their Granny, but keeping the family dynamic tight and small. To be honest, I would like to simply say that they passed away somehow, but it's just it would have likely been deemed too sad for a kids' show and I don't think it would have ever been approved. There was brief discussion of them being traveling salesponies or explorers, but since we never needed the information in an episode, nothing was ever made official. So it will have to remain a mystery until someone decides to define it. fyre-flye.deviantart.com/journal/FAQ-276161988. To get links press and click open.

While we are talking about Applejacks stubborness and pride, have you ever noticed that the writers puts these aspects always in a negative way? I don't think that AJ have had a single episode where her pride and stubborness have been showed in a positive light and I think it could be a good episode where she gets to shine. I imagine a episode where Applebloom gets lost in the Everfree forest and everyone is looking for her and in the end is AJ the only one who won't stop looking for her.

I don't get why loads of ppl are like "no parents in a kids show?!?! that's a bad message for kids" no its not. it happens. parents can die, they're not invincible, even if their kids think so. telling your kids lies like "yes she does have parents they just live some where else" isn't going to help them. everybody will die some day, and it'll just be more of a shock if you try to keep them away from death when they actually experience death. like assuming that someone without parents is a bad influence and can't be around your child is NOT fair. oh and FYI, teaching your child that if they don't behave their parents will leave is not good. especially if they repeat it to other children. trust me, I know. so to all you death-hating over - protective looking-over-shoulder parents, gfy.

This theory could also be the explanation for the other big mystery, why AJ seems to be so attached to her hat (to the point of sneaking it on during the wedding). I think that, to her, it's a symbol of that promise she made, that she would be there for the farm and family no matter what. I am in the camp that still thinks her dad probably wore a hat just like hers and gave her the first one (this gets around the fact she has more than one). She wears it as a constant reminder that she HAS to take over her parents role (you talk about AJ being AB's surrogate mother, but in a certain sense, she is her surrogate father too; she's AJ's protector as well as nurturer*) You notice she didn't have the hat when she left, and I don't think it was because it wouldn't fit her yet. Big Mac already had his horsecollar (which is probably HIS version of the hat) even though it doesn't fit him all that well yet.

Hmm... maybe her parents left her at a young age, and the two shooting stars in the sky in the one episode was supposed to represent her parents supposedly leaving the reunion, or possibly her parents DID die... possibly in an accident? because in the episode Somepony to Watch Over Me, Apple Bloom takes over Apple Jack's job in delivering her pies to the town, but then discovers how dangerous it can be with mixed animals trying to EAT the young filly, and even the flames shooting out of the ground at random times. Is it possible that maybe they DIED on that trip? And leaving Apple Boom at such a young age must not have effected her as much as it did Big Mac and Apple Jack, not knowing her and all... Maybe the reason Apple Jack seems to independent and reliable is having to take over raising Apple Bloom herself and help out with the farm work with Big Mac as you said. This is starting to get a little long, so the point is that Apple Jack was effected greatly, and just matter of working by herself with so many responsibilities just overcame a motherly sense that wasn't supposed to overtake her until a little later to work as hard as independently as she does.

It doesn't really have anything to do with responsibility, but my brother really changed and matured since our cat passed away over the summer. He and I drifted apart as friends as we grew, but when the cat who had so casually wandered into our lives eighteen years ago died in my bed, he was suddenly friendlier to me than he had been in years. It was like the jerk I had come to know and love as my older brother was...gone. There was a new big brother in his place. To be honest, though, I don't miss the old brother.

Although I doubt Hasbro would allow an episode like that be made or aired on The Hub. It seems the subject of death has become too taboo a topic to discuss in children's media nowadays.

I think Applejack is Applebloom's Mother! Think about! Applebloom doesn't have the the same colors as Applejack and Big Mac (who themselves have different colors), and she does not appear to yet exist when Applejack Returns from Mainhattan. and there is also the Fact that Applejack treats Applebloom more like a Daughter rather than a little sister. i Think Applejack did more than just go to Fancy parties in Mainhattan, i think she might have mixed with some rotten apples and conceived Applebloom during her stay in Mainhattan.

They gave birth to Big Macintosh and then a couple of years later, gave birth to Applejack, then only weeks or maybe even days after giving birth to Applebloom, they both passed away. Maybe because of an illness or an injury or maybe their mother could have passed away because of Applebloom's birth and their father was so heartbroken by this, that he passed away soon after. Poor little Applebloom never met her own parents....

It's a movie. The plot of the Equestria Girl movies were not to focus on family bonds or problems in life, but saving the world/healing broken friendships.

someone pointed out where did Applebloom go in the magical mystery cure. this may be a clue to when Applejack parents past away. the two questions about this are Did she here about her parents death by letter and the baby? or did she leave because it was too painful? i believe the later choice. she clearly has a deep rooted foalhood trama. she is faking being happy on the farm. she hides it from her friends and family. this may also be the reason of her stubborness too.
