    In today's video, we're diving into a common dilemma many photographers face: choosing between the Fujinon XF 56mm F1.2 and the XF 90mm F2 lenses. These two telephoto lenses offer fantastic options for portrait photography, but does one outshine the other?
    Let's break it down! I'm approaching this decision from a practical standpoint, exploring the specific use cases where each lens shines the brightest. After thorough testing and consideration, I've come to a conclusion: the 56mm F1.2 is the better fit for my photography needs.
    But hold on, don't think for a second that this means the 90mm F2 isn't equally incredible! Both lenses have their unique strengths and are versatile in their own right, so you really can't go wrong with either choice.
    So, if you're in the same boat, torn between these two fantastic Fujifilm lenses, join me in this video as we explore their capabilities, compare them side by side, and discover why the 56mm F1.2 ultimately won.

    I'm often doing a lot of event photography in large venues, the 90mm is just a freaking champion from my needs. I love using it because the autofocus is just immediately there every time. The rendering is just art. It is magical like you say. Some people say the 56 is the one with the artistic rendering and the 90mm has a more clinical look. I think those people don't have eyes. The 56 is amazing but the 90mm is exquisite. It comes in clutch for the venues I work in.
    It has made me seriously consider upgrading my 35mm 1.4 to the 33mm for the linear motors and modern rendering.

    Glad you discovered the 56 WR it’s so good. I’ve been playing with mine all week and it just is a gorgeous look that is addicting. I’d buy the 90mm as well but like you won’t bother as it’s not as versatile ultimately. For that range I have the 50-140…and after using the 56mm for awhile the AF is lightning, the OIS makes lower shutter speeds easy, and when you can use 90+mm the compression is a dream. It does flare pretty hard/lose contrast in direct light but frankly I like it since it can look cool. Also seems to have a different, harder fall off. But again sometimes that’s exactly what I like. Awesome pics BTW-you do awesome stuff.

    Ha!! Love seeing the various focal length images in this video. For you, the 56 was easily the logical choice. You love that low light stuff. But, I submit that if you would have gotten the old 56 you could have then been able also get the 90!! I have those two. Yes, the old 56 has slower focus. But, I don't care about that much. I just use back button focus with it. I use the 90 for sports and it's really good. I can't quite afford one of the long zooms yet. I do wish the 90 would take the 1.4X or 2X teleconverter. That would be sweet. I've been comparing and shopping for zooms now. The 50-140 and the 70-300 are the front runners. But, definitely need to save pennies first! Have a great week!!

    I choose old 56/1.2 R for it's character 😎 Skin texture looks very damn pleasing.. Perfect balance between lens abberations and optical correction. Old 56/1.2 R has most beautiful flare I've seen in any lens. Shooting against sun with old 56/1.2 R is just soo good. And I love shooting portraits against sun during golden hour. New 56/1.2 R WR? Naah, it's too clinical. It's renders same as any other modern 85/2 prime. There is nothing special about it. Plus on top of that it's not looking as sexy as old one haha😅

    I've only had my 56WR a week but unfortunately it's not living up to the hype. There are a number of problems with it, but the aspect that doesn't seem to being talked about much is the poor focus fall off, it is way too sudden. The transition from in focus to out is lacking graduality and you can get weird results at times where some part of the frame that is oof meets another part that is very oof. This tends to happen with a lot of lenses that strive for low CA and keep the weight and size down (somethings gotta give).
    Adding to this, I realise now I have been very spoilt by my previous lens experience with Fuji. The 16/1.4 (yes, 1.4), 23/2, Touit 32/1.8, 50/2 and 90/2 all have AF LIGHT YEARS ahead of this lens. With AF.C it will just not chill out, not even on a tripod against a high contrast stationary target, it micro pulses constantly. It is slow to acquire focus and simple tests like someone walking towards you it will struggle. It's one of the first Fuji lenses that for some work you will need to pop into Release Priority, otherwise not a single shutter actuation will ring out as it struggles to cope.
    Sadly however, there isn't much choice. If you want an autofocus lens at 85mm equivalent with a decent mfd then this is all we have. It is just mind boggling that Fuji did not try harder and get LM into this lens. I mean c'mon... it was released in 2022... I mean really... wth were they thinking?! If they can get LM into fast 23 and 33mm lenses, into the larger 90 and even into beasts like the 50-140... c'mon... there's no excuse! I think we would have all happily taken another 10-20% size increase for this thing to be properly performing on the AF front with some future proofing from LM drive. Right now it feels like a stepping stone, I will be jumping as soon as there is a better option.
    Overall, I would whole heartedly recommend the 90/2 over this lens any day of the weak. It has similar IQ, better fall off, better AF, also has a decent mfd (60cm vs 50cm on the 56WR) and is way cheaper. The only reason you go for the 56/1.2 is if working space is a problem and you absolutely need more background blur.
    Having said that... and to leave on a positive note rather than negative.... if things line up well for you, subject, oof areas, it will deliver very nice results. There is no issue here with CA or sharpness, flare is well controlled etc.
    I dunno... I just must be in the minority where I don't look for or need super sharpness on a portrait lens. About 5% of the subjects you'll have in front of you benefit from sharpness, the rest of the time your post processing will be all about taking the edge off. If you want a portrait with pores and sharp eyes.. use a macro! The rest of the time I want sublime fall off, interesting or supporting (but not overwhelming or distracting) bokeh.
    I think I will be trying the 50/1 next.

      Interesting. I've never shot with the 56MM, but I was recently loaned a 50MM 1.0 and after doing a portrait photoshoot with it I was kinda blown away, ngl. The lens was annoyingly sharp but it doesn't seem to suffer from all the issues you've had with the 56MM. I found the focus fall off to be smooth, and the AF to be surprisingly accurate/fast even on my X-T3. I tried it on an X-T5 that I got on loan from Fujifilm on some night gigs with barely any lighting and the focus was still surprisingly fast.
      I don't know if you've gotten to try the 50MM 1.0 since you posted your comment, but would love to hear your experience!

    • @SummersSnaps

      @@yashwinning Fuji will send out a 50/1 for me to play with in the near future (I turned them down a few weeks back as I was too busy and they loan for a certain time period and not a moment longer). I'll report back.
      Here's what I think will be my conclusion however;
      - 56/1.2 wins overall. Because it is smaller, lighter, more manageable for event work (my line of work). AF will be slightly better than the 50/1.
      - 50/1 will handle oof areas better.
      - 56/1.2 handles flare, ghosting better. Similar sharpness, higher contrast.
      The two negatives for me with the 56/1.2 is this oof area thing. It's hard to explain and certainly not something you get on every shot, but it looks like everything gets flattened 'too soon' when it comes to things that fall outside it's DoF. So for example, in a portrait or whatever, the thing that is just behind the person (like right just behind them) gets as much oof applied as the buildings behind in the distance. And you see the same thing happening in the foreground. Whereas other glass can have a feeling of progression to the oof area, the things nearer the DoF are oof but there looks like more transitioning to the distant stuff. And of course this is in part due to super shallow DoF, but I shoot a 40/.85 (far thinner than 56/1.2) and it doesn't have this issue, it is far more grading, superb focus fall off.
      The next gripe is the AF. It's not that it's super bad, its just ANNOYING that Fuji made the call not to LM their updated version, like WHY!!?? I think everyone would have preferred a few grams more, a slightly larger 56/1.2 if it equipped LM. This might actually be their biggest stuff up ever imo..
      Right now, there is no 56mm lens that hits the sweet spot (and we have a lot!). Viltrox 56/1.4, Sigma 56/1.4, Sirui 56/1.2, 56/1.2 APD, 56/1.2R and now the 56/1.2RWR.
      Probably the R WR is still the best of the bunch despite its shortcomings. I really wish a bonafide competitor showed up...

    • @davidedante
      @davidedante Год назад

      I felt the same about the AF issue of the 56mm, then I read a comment on dpreview that changed my approach: the DOF is shallow, so if you half-press the shutter release before taking the actual shot, your subject might fall out of focus. Instead, if you press the shutter all the way down straight away, you'll get way more shots in focus! 🙂

    I also had to choose between the XF 90mm f/2 and the XF 56mm f/1.2 WR. I don't think you can go wrong with any of these lenses, but as I already had a 50mm f/2 WR, I went for the 90mm f/2, thinking it would give my photos more variety. I expected to be happy with the results (having seen hundreds of photo samples), but the XF90 still exceeded my expectations. I'm still blown away by the cinematic look of the photos that come out of this lens and even my friends who don't know much about photography noticed the razor sharpness. The XF 90mm is the perfect outdoor portrait lens for my needs, but I still plan to buy another prime lens just for indoor use because unfortunately the XF 50mm f/2 is still not wide enough to be practical in this scenario.

      @@Iamtongue Thanks. I think I will choose between the Viltrox 27mm f/1.2 and the Fuji XF 33mm f/1.4, because I often shoot at around 30mm with my zoom kit lens, so I know 27-33mm is very universal focal lenght that can fit many people in to the frame. My current XF 18-55mm f/2.8-4 kit lens is sharp enough for my needs (especially when I use Photoshop's Enhance Details function, which can restore sharpness to fuji RAW files), but it can't blur the background. I have to change my lens to an XF50mm f/2 if I want to blur the bacground and isolate the subject, and that's time consuming when you only have one camera body.

      Ah, the struggle of not having "RUclips money"! But hey, the Sigma 56mm F/1.4 is still an awesome choice. Who needs the expensive stuff when you can get great results with the Sigma?

    • @9Mtikcus
      @9Mtikcus Год назад

      @Iamtongue it is definitely a balancing act, between quality and price, the sigma 56 & 23 have excellent quality and a great price.
      My clients are happy which is the main thing, the fuji lenses may be technically better, but I'd bet money that if I printed 16"x12" photos using both lenses people would not be able to tell me which lens cost £999 and which cost £380

    I hear G.A.S. 🤣 but it is a very good choice especially when you have the Viltrox XF f/1.2 27mm as well. Perfect combo for portraits. And then also throw in the Viltrox XF f/1.2 75mm 🙃
    It works well as a studio lens. I have used it a couple of times, both the old and the new version. 😉

      Hey if you havent resolved it- it's most likely the AF motor is stuck/failed. It can happen.
      Had the same problem with my XF18-55 f2-4 kit lens. Sent it for a service to Fuji, paid about 160€ with shipping and all. They replaced the front lens and the AF motor unit. Works well now, no problems.

    There's no use worrying about the old XF 90mm F2 R LM WR because the Viltrox AF 75mm f/1.2 XF is far better and costs half the price. The Viltrox is sharper @ f/1.2 than the Fujinon @ f/2. Also the Viltrox's rendering is superior and it doesn't have the edge outlining on bokeh like the Fujinon XF 56/1.2 R WR has.

    I went the other way. Optically the 90 is way better - than the 56 1.2 I had. Yes you need more room but I use the 90 for kids so a little more reach is useful. Most studios I have seen are too small and compromises are made hence the popularity of the 56

  • @danielbogos263
    @danielbogos263 Год назад +1

    Clearly the 56 is better in many ways. More versatile, lighter and overall easy to shoot. However, the compresion on 90 is quite unique si different. But its too close man, this 90 is very hard to work with. If you are a portrait profesional photographer, having this gives you a bit of edge. For most people 56 is more than enough and 75 is max they go. And for good reason
