    I've owned this lens for four years and I agree with everything you said, Dan. I think it's the sharpest lens I've ever used! I only need to use it more often.

      Thanks for the comment, Terry. Same. I’ll admit that I occasionally go through periods when I don’t shoot with it, but as soon as I pick it up again, the love is instantly rekindled. ❤️

    Thank you Dan. I couldn't agree more with everything you said about the 90mm f2, the best lens on the planet.hahah. A friend of friend used to get really annoyed when I said that to him. Joke apart I purchased the 90mm after owning the 50-140 and because of the wieght and bulk I'd rather choose to shoot with the 90mm over the 50-140mm and the 90mm is ideal for portrait.As you said I can carry it all day without any complain and it nail the subject with a crisp razor sharp every single time. I carry the 16mm, the 56, the 35f2 and the 90 mm on my engagement shoot. I usaually end up using the 35 and the 90 mm for the most part of my shots. Take care.

    • @DanBaileyPhoto
      @DanBaileyPhoto  4 года назад +1

      Nas, that’s such a versatile combination. And it’s totally the best lens on the planet! 😀 In this video, I show two jumping mountain bike shots. During that shoot, I was trying to nail them with the 50-140, but was having trouble getting a good AF lock in just the right moment. I went ahead and switched to the 90 and ended up nailing both shots on the very next try. The 50-140 is a great action lens, but I do think the 90 has the edge with regards to AF speed.

      Also, you had contacted me recently with an X-T4 issue. Did I answer you, and did you get the problem sorted out?

    • @nasroullahdinally5140
      @nasroullahdinally5140 4 года назад +1

      Thank you Dan, you did answer me and it helped resolve the issue. However I have another issue with the Xt4 and I even went to store to see if they can set something different in the menu to fix but the salesperson said that’s the way the Xt4 is. I owned the xt3 as well and I am wedding photographer. I don’t see that delay that is long like the Xt4 when the camera goes to sleep. The xt3 respond a lot quicker than the Xt4. Lately I”be been using the Xt4 mainly but having to wait a little longer than the Xt3 is annoying . The lcd screen stayed black too long before I can see the subject. Any idea how to fix that issue. Thanks Dan.

    • @DanBaileyPhoto
      @DanBaileyPhoto  4 года назад

      Nas, I’m not sure you can fix that. I haven’t used the X-T4, but my guess is that it performs this way to maximize battery life. The X-T3 has a quicker screen-dimming than the X-T2, because it’s faster processor needs to exact even more power from the same battery. One possible solution is to put the camera into High Performance mode and see if that makes a difference.

      @@nasroullahdinally5140 A couple things it might be. If slow to turn off/on, could be "sensor cleaning" and you can turn that off if its an issue as it doesn't really do much. If its slow after taking a shot, it could be the clarity setting, which makes it really slow if its set to anything other than 0.

    I love this lens. I think zooms are where it's at for landscape photography, given you cannot always zoom with your feet, such as when you're standing at the edge of a cliff ... you could zoom with your feet to an untimely death. Still, I echo your sentiments about primes. The constraints of a single FL can make one a better, more resourceful photographer. I especially love the challenges of shooting with a long prime like the 90. It's a matter of deciding what elements to distill. It's awfully fun and the image quality is, of course, top notch.

    • @DanBaileyPhoto
      @DanBaileyPhoto  4 года назад

      Daniel, good points. One wouldn't want to zoom towards an untimely death! 😱 I do like the flexibility of zooms for shooting landscapes and other subject matter, especially things like sports and action,, but I also love the simplicity of primes as well. I use both quite often in my photography.

  • @dkiechle

    Yeah, I love the angle of view provided by a 135mm lens. It was the first lens I bought for my brand new Minolta SR-T-303 in 1974 (it came with a 50mm 1.7), and you're right: you get used to what a prime will do, so you can pretty much frame without even raising the camera. However, I only just moved from a Nikon D750 to a Fujifimn X-T30 almost exactly a year ago; it came with an 18-55mm lens, and I bought the 55-200 and the 10-24, not to mention miscellaneous other accessories. It's time, I think, to take a break for a while. Still, that 90mm looks awfully good...

    Absolutely 100% agree with everything in this video Dan. I did my first wedding shoot with the 90mm on my X-H1 at the weekend and it was an absolute joy to use. Tack sharp and never missed focus once (other than operator error!) To think I was previously lugging around my 6d mk ii and 70-200 f2.8 is just madness. I had it paired with the 35mm f2 on my X-T30 which was also fantastic. The one thing I took away is I think a 16mm or 23mm f1.4 would be the ideal accompaniment to the 90mm.

    • @DanBaileyPhoto
      @DanBaileyPhoto  4 года назад +1

      Gareth, it's an entirely different world shooting with the 90mm on an X Series body compared to a 70-200 2.8 on a big DSLR, and it's not like you're sacrificing quality. The 90 is amazing, and it does have extremely quick AF, even faster than the autofocus on the 50-140. And I would agree, the 23mm f/1.4 is also an incredible, razor sharp lens that would pair extremely well with the 90. Those two lenses would make an excellent combination for shooting things like weddings and portraits.

    Helpful video Dan. I’m not too long into Fuji (X-T1) and have already purchased the 35 f2 and 16 f1.4 (both WR). I’ve kept my Canon 40D and own a long range Tamron 18 - 270 which is outstanding for general street photography (in good light!), so although I’m tempted to acquire a WR rated telephoto lens for the Fuji, I may get try and get by with the Canon / Tamron for now and look out for a 90 f2 for my X-T1

    • @DanBaileyPhoto
      @DanBaileyPhoto  2 месяца назад

      Thanks for your comment. The 90 would be an excellent choice for a mid range telephoto on the X-T1. You'll find the quality to be excellent and the size/weight. make it very portable. Along with your 35 and 16 lenses, you'd have an excellent and very compact Fuji kit what would give you the wide/middle/long range view angles.
      Whenever I'm putting together a lens combination for heading out, whether it's for a short excursion or an extended shoot, this is how I always think: Wide, Middle, Long. This lets you cover all your bases without unnecessary duplication in your kit and overloading your camera bag. How are you liking the X-T1 so far?

      Steve, thanks for your comment. Yes, the 90 is very good lens, but it's expensive enough to take some time and consider how it would fit into your style. That said, I've always felt that every photographer should have at least one fast prime, and in my opinion, a normal or short telephoto prime gives you the most benefits of having that wide aperture.

      Timothé, Fuji has quite a few good telephoto lenses in their line. Obviously, the 90mm is an incredible lens, and I've already shown you what you can do with it in this video. I actually like the 55-200 for shooting landscapes, it gives you good versatility, a longer focal length and excellent stabilization, and it's not too expensive. The 18-135 is another good one, also stabilized, and gives you a wider range of focal lengths. And I love the 100-400mm for isolating distant subject matter. It's considerably bigger and heavier and it costs a little bit more, but the 100-400 is an incredible lens. I'll probably do a video about that one soon. 😀 Hope that helps.

      I live in a small coastal town in the Dominican Republic.. I shoot anything from real estate to beauty pageants and of course a lot of sessions on the amazing beaches nearby.. Earning potential here is very limited so I try to keep costs down.. I shoot X-T2 (T1 back up).. I'm pretty simple, I can shoot just about everything with the xf 35 f2 (love it).. when I need wider I have the 18 f2 ($200) .. (for real estate an adapted Canon 10-18 ($150)).. I spent a lot to get the 56 as my 'Wow' lens .. but it has been, at times, disappointing.. the focusing accuracy, on the T2 at least, makes the lens not as reliable and enjoyable as I need it to be.. When I shot Canon I bought, hated and sold the 85 1.8.. but when I got the 135 it was love at first shot and served me well for many years.. .. I'm a 'family guy' wife, 2 kids, vehicle payments etc.. so the $400 I saved for the Viltrox has already meant sacrifice.. another $400 for a used Fuji means I have to lie to the wife hahahaha.. I love my Fujis, I won't be changing systems in the foreseeable future, so $400 spread out over a couple of years for my main lens, isn't really very much.. I'm sure my clients would be more than happy with the images from the Viltrox, as they have been with the 56, but for me, for my own personal enjoyment and satisfaction.. I need to have the 90 .. plus my birthday (53) is on Monday, so that gives me a legitimate excuse, doesn't it?

      That's a really good way to look at it. Good equipment is an investment, and over time the cost will amortize, and it will likely pay for itself, since it sounds like you have clients who will be very happy with the images you shoot with that lens. 👍

      Ric, I have shot with the 16 f/2.8 a few times, and I think it’s a great lens that compliments the other small primes nicely. My main wide angle has been the 14 f/2.8. That was one of my first Fuji lenses, and I like the extra width. I like that the 16 I a little smaller, though.
      I prefer the 90 over the 80, mostly because it’s smaller and lighter. The 80 a fantastic lens, nearly identical to the 90 in quality but it’s quite a bit bigger and heavier, mostly due to the addition of the stabilization elements.

    Looking to keep my kit small and simple - I was looking for a telephoto for sports. It's good to see that you also shoot cycling! I like to shoot crits, and races at the velodrome (indoors). I want a lens that's able to do well in lower light at the track but also affordable and light. I currently use a Tamron 70-180 on Sony and thats around 800g. The fuji is heavier, and twice the price of the 90mm f2... I wanted to know your opinion about whether the 90mm would be a good alternative for the 50-140. I know you said it would be more of an addition than a replacement for your purposes, but I only use telephoto for sports. Otherwise I want to use an 18/35 combo. Thanks for your comment. Yes, I do think the 90 is a good altneriative to the 50-140. Not only is the 90 quite a bit smaller and lighter, it also has very vast AF. I've been in situations when the 90 actually outperformed the 50-140 with regard to autofocus, so yes, it's an excellent optic and there's no reason you couldn't use it as a dedicated action lens.

That’s a fantastic combination and would give you wide, middle and long focal lengths, in a high quality and compact setup. If you have the space, that would by my choice over the 18 and 56, because the 90 will give you more soft background telephoto options at medium and longer distances. Dan. What’s your processing preference ? Lightroom? Capture One? Iridident X-Transformer?

    • @DanBaileyPhoto
      @DanBaileyPhoto  4 года назад +2

      I’ve used all three of those programs, and I think they all have pros and cons. I’ve used Lightroom for years, and it’s pretty comprehensive, so it’s hard to move away from that program. Capture One does an exceptional job with color and RAW rendering, especially with the Fuji colors. I also like the simplicity of Luminar, compared to the complexity of Capture One.
      I also think that Brian has done an impressive job with Iridient Developer. I used it for awhile a few years ago.
      However, as much as I like and tried to incorporate all of these programs in to some form of my workflow, I realized that I was complicating my digital photography life. Add in the fact that I absolutely love the Fuji Jpegs straight out of camera, these days I’ve embraced the notion of shooting Jpeg as often as possible. I still use Lightroom for my main catalog, and use Luminar for much of my occasional processing.
      Again, though, I spend most of my energy trying to nail it in the moment and being really happy with the Fuji Jpegs. When I need/want to process, I usually use Luminar.
      Hope that helps. I know I gave you a long winded answer, but I’m a huge proponent of embracing the capabilities of today’s cameras and spending less time sitting at my computer editing images, as I outline in this video:

      I'm not too familiar with the Viltrox, but from what I have seen, it's a decent lens. I don't think it will match the sharpness of Fuji's 90mm, but it does get the job done at a considerably lower price. The 90 is really hard to beat, so I guess it comes down to whether you want to pay for that quality. In the long run, if you truly love a lens, the extra few hundred dollars usually end up being pretty negligible, and would probably end up being spent on something dumb, like bills, gas, or expensive coffee. 😆 Given that you have all of the other f/2 primes, then my advice would be to go for the 90.

    • @DanBaileyPhoto
      @DanBaileyPhoto  4 года назад +1

      Philip, I'm currently using the X-T3. The X-H1 has the same sensor and processor as the X-T2, which I always found to give amazing image quality. The back side illuminated sensor has a few more pixels and slightly better low light sensitivity, and the updated processor give it slightly better color rendition.
      In real world terms, I'd say the X-T2/X-H1 image quality can absolutely hold up to the newer models. Photos from those camera still look incredible. When I browse through my favorite images that I shot with my X-T2, X-T1 and even the X20, I'm still impressed and am still in love with the colors and the overall look of the images, as much as I am with my recent X-T3 images.
      Our modern technology world makes it so that all the camera companies have to chase each other every year, and that means they continually upgrade models on a regular basis. However, Fujifilm builds the X Series so that each model has lasting legacy and can give you years of enjoyment and great performance. So yes, the X-H1 still produces wonderful looking images. Bottom line, if you're happy with the images you're making, then there's never a need to rush out and get the latest camera.

      Michael, do you already have the 16 f/1.4? If not, and you want to go lightweight, you might consider the 14mm f/2.8. It's quite a bit lighter than the 16mm f/1.4. Or even the newer 16 f/2.8. That 14mm is an amazing lens, though, it's been my go-to wide angle Fuji lens for years. Super sharp, close focus and considerably lighter than the 16. The 16 f/2.8 is even smaller and lighter. For a hiking kit, I wold consider one of those two over the 16 f/1.4, especially if you're concerned about saving weight.

      Marcin, both are great lenses, and each have their strengths. Yes, the 90 is amazingly sharp, very fast and it's weather sealed, but it does not have stabilization. The 55-200 is highly versatile with powerful OIS stabilization, and a longer focal length zoom range. And it's less expensive. For general use, the 55-200 is a pretty sweet lens. I bought this lens for nature and portrait.
    Do you think I need to think a second time about selling this lens?

    • @DanBaileyPhoto
      @DanBaileyPhoto  3 года назад

      For the most part, focal length is personal preference, there's really no right answer to that question. There are some looks that will really inspire you and drive the creativity you want with your imagery, and you'll find that certain looks will appeal to your style more than others. I always recommend having at least one fast telephoto lens, because that kind of lens can really come in handy for shooting certain styles and isolating subject matter from your background with nice, shallow focus.
      However, I agree that the 35 f/2 is extremely versatile, and you can achieve similar effects by simply moving in closer. The 90 is a fantastic lens, but if you find that you don't use it very often, then perhaps selling it and paring you kit down would offer you a sense of simplicity, and as I said, you can still get some nice, shallow DOF effects with the 35. Hope that helps.

Second, do you also have the 56 1.2? I have the 56, and I think it will be redundant to have this. And third, I'm choosing between this lens, or the 55-200mm lens for portraiture. I don't know if you have the 55-200mm, if you do, how's the sharpness between the 2 lens? Thanks again.

    • @DanBaileyPhoto
      @DanBaileyPhoto  4 года назад +1

      Edwin, thanks for your feedback. To answer your questions, no, I don’t have IBIS on my camera. Shooting those kinds of relativity slow shutter speeds requires the right subject and a steady hand. Actually, when shooting with low speeds, I’ll often brace the camera by pulling the strap right against my neck.
      2. Yes, I do have the 56. Also and incredible lens, but I wouldn’t necessarily say that it’s redundant. The longer focal length of the 90 can give you a much different look, especially at medium distances. And the AF is WAY faster as well. They each have their strengths. But can compliment each other.
      3. I do own the 55-200. It’s a good lens, and I enjoy using it, but hands down, the 90 is far superior. It’s noticeably sharper, especially once you start to shoot further away, it’s let’s in quite a bit more light and has WAY faster AF. The only thing the 55-200 has over the 90 is that it’s stabilized, but overall, it’s just not in the same class as the 90. And with the current rebates, the 90 is only $100 more, instead of $250 more, as it normally is.

    • @DanBaileyPhoto
      @DanBaileyPhoto  4 года назад

      Marcelo, that's a tricky question, simply because there are so many different styles of cinema. Trying to nail it down to a single "look" is tough. However, there are a couple of looks that could be defined as having a cinematic quality. Shooting slightly wide angle to normal, around 28mm-35mm on your Fuji, and shooting telephoto with a shallow depth of field.
      With your 15-45mm, you already have the wide to normal range covered, so you could achieve a cinematic look with your existing gear, it would just take studying camera angles and focal length that some of your favorite directors use and practicing.
      Having a slightly faster lens like the 35mm f/2 can give you a very nice look with a more shallow depth of field, and having a longer lens would definitely give you more options for isolating your subject matter against. shallow, compressed background. Fuji's 50-230 is an inexpensive zoom that would give you that nice long lens look. If you wanted to spend a little more, then you might consider the 90mm f/2, or Fuji's 16-80mm f/4. Hope that helps. I wish this lens had 9 aperture blades for better bokeh

      Thanks for the comment. While it's true that more blades made for smoother circles of confusion, the bokeh on the 90 has a pretty cool style. I like the way it looks. What Fuji do you use and what do you like to shoot?

      @@DanBaileyPhoto I have an X-Pro3 and I shoot street, travel, and portraits. I've checked the 80mm f2.8 Macro and the new 50mm f1.0, but I'm not a fan of their lemon shaped bokeh balls at their widest aperture. I like the 56mm f1.2, but it's not WR. I guess I'll stick with my 50mm f2 for now.

      That 50 f/2 is a pretty awesome lens, especially for the price, size, weight and the fact that it’s weather sealed. 👍

    Fuji 56mm f/1.2 APD is better.

      I haven't actually used the 56mm APD version, but I do have the original 56mm f/1.2. It does have incredibly optics, but I do like the slightly longer focal length of the 90mm, and it has a much faster AF motor than the 56. They're both great lenses, though, and highly capable tools for different uses.

    10% into your video and you have not talked about the 90 yet. Yikes. What a waste of time!

      Thanks for your comment. You're right. First mention of the 90 is at 1:40, but I wanted to give some background about my style and history, which is a large part of why I love this lens... just like the title says. Are you a Fuji shooter?

    YOU NEED TO RELAX WHEN DOING YOUR VIDEOS

      Hey Daniel, you're not wrong. 🤣 I get pretty excited when talking about cameras and stuff. I do try to keep myself under control, but it doesn't always work. I'm much more diligent on some videos, while others are basically a runaway train of energy. In fact, one time in college, someone said to me, "you have much more energy than you need." Thirty years later, nothing has changed.
      BTW, What Fuji do you use and what do you like to photograph?
