The M109 will not change Putin's mind but it will change the "health condition" of some Russian equipment and Russian soldiers making Putin's war even more costly for the invaders. Currently, in Ukraine, the Paladin is most useful in a defensive role but local counterattacks will demonstrate its versatility.

This won't be the first time the US taxpayer has funded the military of our adversaries, Afghanistan comes to mind, a totally unnecessary loss of $60B to $80B of military equipment due to incompetence at our highest levels of government, yet not one person has accepted any responsibility or been punished?! Hell, we've been China's military R&D for 50 years! But you must admit our choices were scant. We could, 1) do nothing and surrender Ukraine to Putin, 2) support Ukraine through advanced military equipment giving them a chance to defend themselves, or 3) Get directly involved with NATO troops & equipment on Ukraine's side. Since Ukraine is not a member of NATO this option has no legal standing and could initiate WWIII. Of the options, we chose (2) and we don't know the outcome yet ...

I used to be a defense contractor technician on artillery systems years ago. The M109 system is now fully digitalized and has the latest in fire control and other systems that enable this weapons system to hit their targets on the first round. The best use of this system is to take out the Russian artillery units in the field and destroy the fortifications that have been erected in the occupied parts of eastern Ukraine. Along with the now fielded Himars and other anti-artillery/Materials systems, the balance of power can be shifted if enough of these weapons systems can be fielded. Now the Ukrainians have to also provide anti air assets to protect these artillery units, as to the Russians will be having the drones and other air assets out looking for them.

The reason Ukraine is doing better than the Russians is because Britain and America have been involved in training of Ukranian troops. At this very moment thousands of Ukrainian troops are in Britain where British and New Zealand troops are teaching them to use weapons such as the MRML and various artillery pieces such as the L119 gun. This is part of an ongoing effort to upgrade the Ukrainian army's training.

Not just UK and US... Lithuania after the 2014 annexation of the Crimea and basically trained the core of Ukrainian light infantry brigades.
Russia expected an easy country to steam roll little better than what they encountered in 2014, what they found was an army that had been trained in NATO tactics that had been greatly upgraded equipment wise and the only saving grace Russia has is NATO hadn't completed the re-arming of Ukraine.

This is one of my favorite 155mm self-propelled artillery pieces which where used (Vietnam) in extensive combat offensive/defensive operations. For example, in the battle of Khe Sanh it was the M109 and the M107 artillery equipped units which prevented Khe Sanh from being overrun with hourly artillery barrages. In Vietnam it saved many units from being wiped out. The one I rarely see covered is the M107 175mm self-propelled artillery piece which can hurl shells up to a max of 25 miles. In Vietnam, they were quite numerous. I don't think they're produced anymore. The USA Army fell in love (plus cost justifications) with the "Paladin" featured here. But the M107 is still in service today with dozens of NATO and non-NATO Armed Forces. Would make a lot of sense to send some of these M107s to Ukraine from other NATO Armies since they probably are not in active use anymore. Maybe takes to long to bring the M107 up to spec given today's technology of precision artillery pieces.

I was in Viet Nam in 1968 and when we set up a battery of M-109 howitzers, in Viet Nam, My unit, the 3/13 artillery (The Clan) attached to the 25th infantry division (Tropic Lightning) used a 4-man crew on each M-109 because all the "Fire Direction Control (FDC) came from a cental location located on an Armored Personnel Carrier (APC) which directed a battery of 6-M109s in an extended "W" formation and they all fired at the same time in the same direction based on meticulously surveyed in coordinates at the battery's location. The Fire direction control on the M-109-6 paladin is now using satellites and every gun can be directed by its own Fire Direction Control adding 2 more personnel on board eliminating the additional crews on a pair of separate APCs. Now all 6-crew members are trained on every aspect of the M-109 operation and can be swapped off if needed however the pay grades are different for each member and high pay grades get the more technical positions. In Viet Nam, the 3/13 Artillery had 3- M-109 batteries of 6 howitzers each making 18- M-109s for battery's A, B, C with D battery being made up of 4 - 8-inch self-propelled Howitzers. The weight if a 155-howitzer shell was 97 pounds while the weight of the 8-inch howitzer round was 235 pounds and needed hydraulic loading and handling of the shells and took longer to set up and feed ammo to and mostly stayed at the base camp, because they would not be good at "Shoot and Scoot". All the howitzers used "Bag Powder" to fire the projectile as you can see in one of the videos. Kill radius of a 155 shell was 50 meters and an 8-inch shell was 125 meters. Needless to say, you do not want to be on the receiving end of a Paladin.

Some criticisms on this video. All are tied to the secondary armament.
1st The video states that the secondary weapon is a 2.7mm machine gun. There is no country in the world that uses a 2.7mm machine gun in any capacity. The gun shown in the video is a .50 cal M2 machine gun.
2nd the .50 cal machine gun M2 could be converted to 12.7mm, which would almost fit in with the video's 2.7mm spec, but they lost 10 mm in their description and the dialog.
3rd Since the Paladin is originally a United States weapons system, converting the .50 cal to metric disservices the weapon. The M2 is one of the most venerable and consistent weapons ever used in the U.S. arsenal. The WORLD knows it as the .50 cal M2 Machine Gun.
So please, if you want to present yourself as a factual report on the specs of the Paladin, at least GET THE WEAPON SPECS RIGHT! Stop trying to make your report multi-national and stick with what the World knows the weapon is.

Gernamy's inability to arm Ukraine in any meaningful quantity CLEARLY shows how poorly the German army has been ill equipped.
