Within 5yrds after the line of scrimmage contact is allowed. If no such contact is made five yards after the line of scrimmage. The play is safe. But since #9 made contact within that five yards margin it should not of been OPI.
But that OPI missed that they reviewed, after Christian Watsons "OPI" was way beyond five yards of the line of scrimmage. Contact that isn't allowed. Yes refs screwed the Packers, but since the lions are good. The NFL can elevate the Lions to help them make more money from betting against teams that don't fit the script.
Especially since betting has been made legal. Can you imagine how much more money as a ref you could be making officiating your preferred outcome?

Question, if you told the refs one player was eligible and he announces to the entire stadium and the viewing audience that a different number was eligible before you lined up and that mistake would cost you the game, would you tell the refs or just run the play and take the L?

He was clearly just a blocker, should have avoided the contact. He targeted the DB. That's a direct violation of the rules. If you illegally target a DB the refs are a lot less likely to look at the one yard rule as closely. Laporta was a receiver who turned around and looked for the ball immediately as contact was initiated by the linebacker. Laporta's immediate motion was to meet the contact of the defender and turn around to catch the ball. He initiated nothing. The Packer receiver blind sided the defender instead of avoiding contact. Get a clue guys....

In the second half Love rolled out to his left. He threw a pass into the flat that I believe was incomplete. Love is pursued from behind by one defender, but Zadarius Smith comes at him from straight on (relatively) jump a up and with his right hand makes fairly simple v nificant contact with Love's face mask, helmet and head. That is a 15 yd penalty with at least a warning for a DQ.
That same side of the field missed a spearing call earlier in the game on Detroit. Pass was caught in the flat behind the line, the ball carrier led with the crown of his helmet to contact the head of a Packer defender. 15 yds and a DQ for spearing.

    1:18
A pick play is when a player is sent downfield to block a defender so the receiver he is covering gets free, this is illegal.
A "pick-play" is essentially offensive pass interference
Blocking more than one yard beyond the line of scrimmage by an offensive player prior to a pass being thrown is offensive pass interference.
A blindside block is any block toward the blocker's own end line or against an opponent who because of his physical positioning and focus of concentration is especially vulnerable to injury. A blindside block is illegal unless it is initiated with open hands.

    • @antoniouniverseantonio9630

If a receiver is running a slant route and another defender playing man-to-man coverage trying to cover a back in the flat then runs into him, that's not a pick play. The defender can run into the receiver bc they are allowed within the rules to bump a receiver within 5 yards of the line of scrimmage. Watson was clearly ahead of his defender cutting into a slant when the safety made contract with him. You don't see Watson using his arms to block. He had the posture of a receiver running his route. The issue is that Lions were playing man-to-man coverage, and the Pack ran a play to beat man-to-man coverage. The officials took it upon themselves to rewrite the rules and call the play offensive PI and take a TD off the board.
There were also a ton of plays in which the Lions committed OPI and there was no call by the officials. This has to go down as one of the worst officiating games ever in the regular season.

@@antoniouniverseantonio9630 First of all I am not that knowledgeable about football and all the rules. So you might know more about that then I do. As a guy who grew up in Detroit I have followed the Lions off an on all my life and feel the rivalry with Green Bay and Vince Lombardi's legacy and all that. I am pretty excited about this Lion's team and certainly see the excitement the NFL has for them this year. But I am not so jaded to think they don't make a serious effort to be even handed. This was an important game but I had to follow it on the radio because it was blacked out in my town.

Now I'm not talking about the rest of the game just this one play.
I put the 1:18 time stamp there to highlight the contact. Adjust the playback speed to .25 and hit the 1:18. Watch it a few times and tell me it's not OPI. One way or another.
I did not say it was a pick play although it is possible someone else might. I thought the explanation in the video was off such as saying the hit occurred on the 5 yard line so I put up some examples of illegal plays that were mentioned in the comments.
Kerby Joseph is clearly focused on the quarterback to see where the ball is going to go when Christian Watson who is looking right at him slams into him with his shoulder and sends him flying. Bit more than a bump I would say.
If you want to prove this was one of the "worst officiating games ever in the regular season" I think you've got your work cut out for you.

Incidental contact. The two came to the same spot innocently. The Packer defender was keying on the Lion receiver and didn't see LaPorta. That was his pursuit trajectory. LaPorta had his head down running an inside hook pattern. You can see he is dragging his plant foot before the contact. The contact is in the process of hooking. Incidental...

The Lions defender wasn't even looking at Watson, which is why he bit the dust when he bumped Watson's shoulder. On the second play, you can see both Lions receivers, on both sides of the field, targeting and initiating contact with the defenders. Pretty obvious.

The first play should actually been called a pick not pass interference

Except that Watson had every right to run his route... the incidental and unintentional contact was obvious.

Are these guys blind? You can clearly see contact is past 1 yard of the line of scrimmage.

Wow 3 yards just killed the packers. If they had those yards back they could have beat the LIONS by 50 points.

the ball has to be in the air for it to be considered a PI. And the first played, contact was clearly made at about the 4 yard marker and the Lions defender landed at 5 because of forward motion. and the Packers were trying that at other times in the game as well. You've misunderstood the rules.

Their might be a way to do something about pass interference calls. Give each team a challenge for the pass interference infraction. If they use it in the 1st half they'll get that challenge back in the 2nd half if the call is REVERSED. If you lose the challenge then you have no more challenges left in the 2nd half for PASS INTERFERENCE ONLY. You still keep your regular challenges for each half that you already have.
The call must be made within 1 minute from when New York receives it

My personal opinion is it's not poor officiating it's very good officiating because it's intentional because the games are fixed and there's a lot of money riding on them and that's all there is to it
