omg, you're a life saver. Reading tons of articles didnt help, but you've explained it in a really simplistic manner which was amazing! thankyou so much!
Just came across this site. Truly excellent--if I knew as much as this man this is exactly how I would want to present it for others to understand the grand overview. You can make little sense of the details under you understand the grand overview. Thanks so much Mr. Hughes!!!!!!
+Frode Østhus To represent the concept of containment. The Soviets represented by the red of the ketchup and the US' job is to keep it from coming out. I think, yeah, that's the ticket!
I am a soon to be English translator in Argentina (University of Cordoba) and let me tell you.. your videos brought me closer to my degree! You are GREAT!
How ironic is the comment he made about Bin Laden at the end of the video? That is, considering looking at the fact that Bin Laden was killed the day after this video was uploaded
Thanks for making that fun instead of boring! Ive had issues my whole life with zoning out during history lessons because I'm bored and in turn, not remembering much information. Now I'm taking history online and pretty much have to teach myself everything. I have a 5-essay midterm due today and 3 of the essays have to do with the cold war, which I really didn't understand. Your quick, interesting lecture has given me the background I needed to be able to get through further research! THANKS!
Thank you so much! Ur video helped me rap up the idea of the cold war better than my timeline study guide!! It would be more awesome if you added or talked about the presidents involved in the events briefly as you went through them! Thank you again!
Thank you for your amazing lessons online , Its nice to have question answered without hours of research :) Thank you from all the way in South Africa :)
Ahh if i had only found this video earlier the war would have been much easier to understand instead of having to read the goddamn school book. Thanks and great video, interesting to listen to! Hopee i pass my test tomorrow..
@jeffrman777 correct, there has never really ever been a real democracies. Of course we are republics, I just talk fast. Thanks for the comment clarity!
Thank you so much for this video and the one on the Cuban Missile Crisis, it's gonna help me with a presentation for International Studies Minor that I am applying! Cheers.
Would you consider doing some alternate history videos? Given your fluid understanding of actual history and the nuanced nature of history, your take on potential alternate histories would be very entertaining and thought provoking. This vid gives me a topic idea: If Douglas MacArthur was given the nomination in 1944 and if FDR died in Sept 44 most likely Mac would have won against an unknown Truman. Would Mac have taken the German troops and turned them against the Soviets like Patton wanted?
Hughsey, love this vid and love all your vids. Just one Q. Why do you mention and almost emphasise that the soviets were atheist? (10:10) I don't question that the majority of soviets might have been atheist but was this detail's main significance for motivation of the arab resistance (being predominantly Islamic) or some other reason? Again, love your work bud. Keep it comin
Thanks brother for the kudos. I emphasize it because they did, that might be a cheap answer but it is the answer. And it is how we define it. Do you know we added the word "God" to the Pledge of Allegiance in the 1950s in order to define our selves as not atheists. So I blame Ike! lol. If you keep watching, Ill keep producing. ~Keith
If your cramming Id hit the US History playlist, this is for World history (but crossovers) Either way good luck! Go earn yourself some college credit! Hughes (share my page with your peeps for finals and next year!)
Thank you so much for this video! I have been studying for my History final and a huge chunk of it is on the Cold War (according to my teacher), and I had troubles with that unit. This video helped a lot! Thank you :)
I had a history teacher in college who was stationed on the German border during the cold war. He was out on patrol in the wilderness with his squad, and well, they were bored, so they sent someone for beer. He came back with a lot more beer (although it was an off brand) and more change back than they expected. They checked his change more closely and realized he'd accidentally slipped across the border into Czechoslovakia.
From the 1917-1945 period the Soviet Union did not take much action to expand... to in the US' view, "threaten" us influence in the world.... that changed at Yalta... at least in terms of US and Soviet Foreign policy. But there was no love lost in the 1920-1940 period either... the US supported the white russians after the revolution and I think our own red scare in the US allowed the more hardcore forces in the USSR power....
When talking about Soviet Russia, "All that good stuff out of the window" Also, he literally calls Stalin the devil. I think I understand the hate of communism in NA but I'm not sure if this needs to be shown in an informative video about a key event in world history that formed the social and political climate we live in today. But all of this is very subjective so I'm sure other people's views will differ. Although, apart from a few points, I found this video helpful.
it's really what happened, the soviet view is pure propaganda. I mean, if you looked for the north Korean view on the Korean war obviously it'd be propaganda, but if you look at a south Korean or an American view (I mean, there would be some amount of dogma, but what really happened would probably be released) then obviously you'll get a different more realistic story. Do you really want a Russian view on the war?
Oli Geary Ugh. He called Stalin the "red Devil" because that was what the US viewed him as at the time. I don't think he really thinks that. "all of that good stuff out of the window" was definitely a joke. And hell, freedom of speech is good, no? I know it depends on where you live, and it's all about perspective, but he is western, he is bound to have some bias. NO human is without bias.
Your not being rude. I think I do. Communism, in my mind is an end endeavor. The paths to this utopian land of equality are different in their methodology... in how they get there. How they deal with the bureaucracy of the pathway.... economics.... the bourgeoisie......individualism/statism... I understand it is much more complex than a ten minute lecture.
"What's more important? Freedom of speech or that we don't hurt the president's feelings?" Oh my lol this hits too close in 2017. I'm watching these videos in my late 20s and enjoy them thoroughly. Thanks for the history.
To be fair the whole England, UK, great britain thing is pretty confusing. I don't think we even get it ourselves. I mean our Olympic team is called team GB, yet it has people from Northern Ireland in it which obviously is not part of Great Britain.
OK. 1917-1939... but much of what they took they took through aggression, except for homegrown revolutions like in Cuba and Vietnam (not that the US has not done the same) In school not much... Sputnik....was the big one in the curriculum. But on my own, I went on to read the communist manifesto and I took a history of the Soviet Union in college.
to be honest the cold war is the most passive aggressive measuring competition that ever happened honestly great video though I know I'm gonna pass exams now
I agree, I wear western civ glasses so I see the world that way but agreed things are never so black and white. Rest assured I challenge my kids on the problems inherent in capitalism (poverty, healthcare) but also within the communist state (freedom, liberty). I would agree though there is really no such thing, things are much more nuanced and layered. Thanks you for contributing to the dialogue, you sound like a smart one.
I actually don't really care what people call the U.S.. I've responded to the England/GB thing ten times already. I get it. And I actually appreciate feedback, I just thought you served ur feedback on a plate of meanness. And my patriotism is in my humanism, not my nationality. With that being said, I think I detected a compliment, so Ill take a bow, tip my hat and say thanks. But at then end of the day, I always now say The United Kingdom. I also like cheese.
man the way you're speaking just like my school teacher is what made me lose my attention.. i felt like i was in the class room and i hate being there D=.. how ever nice info and thx for explaining :D
lol. never been accused of being too patriotic, usually the opposite for being critical of many US foreign policy actions. And sir I do understand communism, just ask Dr. Slavin, my college professor in the History of the Soviet Union, I think he was KGB.
Please refer to the part of the video where I said the Allies were all good or soviets all bad. showed propaganda but only to emphasize the climate of the cold war. Both sides emphasized falsities in their efforts for world domination.for the record,I am lean 185 pounds and calling people you don't know stupid, is well, kinda stupid.I think I just broke my own rule. My bad. rest assured we do units on propaganda and teaching kids to analyze and think for themselves. the world is indeed grey.
I have been watching all of your videos and they are simply amazing, I just wanted to thank you so much for all the effort you put in to making them. You should really get a youtube partnership and make some money that can be put back into your classroom. Your videos are getting tons of attention now that there are only a few more days till the exam.
Thanks Keith this really helped. Im not to good at history im going to sub so you can help me by making more videos so i can better understand history! (:

omg, you're a life saver. Reading tons of articles didnt help, but you've explained it in a really simplistic manner which was amazing! thankyou so much!

I really enjoy how you relay information. Interesting and not overwhelming. Thanks! :)

+Frode Østhus To represent the concept of containment. The Soviets represented by the red of the ketchup and the US' job is to keep it from coming out. I think, yeah, that's the ticket!

Thank you for this. Always wanted the gist of the Cold War without delving too much into it. I appreciate your efforts in helping us out :)
@olatrollmann yeah but it was impossible to catch, so they stopped.
Thanks for making that fun instead of boring! Ive had issues my whole life with zoning out during history lessons because I'm bored and in turn, not remembering much information. I got straight A's for the first semester of history without a textbook thanks to you! Legendary!
your school must be easy as hell
Can you do a video on how the Cold War affected the foreign policy?
This was so useful to get just a summery of everything and you explain it so well
That really help me to understand this complicated events I like your simple way of explaining better than those complicated documentary long videos
Thank you so much! Ur video helped me rap up the idea of the cold war better than my timeline study guide!!
It would be more awesome if you added or talked about the presidents involved in the events briefly as you went through them!
Thank you again!
You really made boring things interesting and simple. It helps a lot in clearing my concept, thanks;)
You've officially saved my life at least six times now.
If you're part Cat, I can only help you 3 more times.
Listening to these videos while studying, helps a lot thanks :)
Did you notice on the map it said United Kingdom, not England
Thank you for your amazing lessons online , Its nice to have question answered without hours of research :) Thank you from all the way in South Africa :)

10:55 hahah thanks for learning me a little bit of the cold war :)
Is there a chance someone could tell me where I could find the video being refernced in the beginning.
Kinda surprised you didn't mention George Kennan.
You can really tell that this is an American view on the cold war...
Very much...
how so ? I just started this so I'm not familiar. With it
When talking about Soviet Russia, "All that good stuff out of the window" Also, he literally calls Stalin the devil. Sugar plum. No it isn't. 😵
Great explanation for world history!! I think ill pass my final now
Its Britain not England!
Hilbert Halsey It's actually the United Kingdom.
no. Its been the UK since the late 1800s.
