I worked for the Tappan stove company in Mansfield Ohio from 86 -92. It was the plant that built the first microwave oven in the 50's, however we didn't make microwaves when I was there. The plant closed in 92 and the building is torn down now. I got to go to HVAC school for free, for the plant closing. I think it was called Frigidaire when we left. It changed names 3 times while I was there. I can't help wanting to refurbish that furnace. Only ac's and electric heat here SW FL. Dude, I really enjoy watching.
Horizontal furnaces like this vintage should have a 24 volt heater, to help the fan start, built into the fan control. Same as the Down flows. It’s called a sure start. The fan and limit control will have 6 terminals 2 for the fan, 2 for the limit, and 2 for the heater. It also keeps the fan from going on and off. Those burners are shot. I wouldn’t trust that the crossovers aren’t rusted, by the sound of that delayed ignition. That furnace is older than you think.
I dunno what it is but I love to see these old beasts. Inlaws had the original 1964 Luxaire in their old house, probably lost half its BTUs up the chimney but it was still answering the bell when they moved away...
Ted, you know if there was something wrong with that heat exchanger your flames would definitely be doing the Wango Tango!!! That's perfect for Crazy Teddy, the Motor City Madman. 🎶🎵🎶🎵🎶🎵🎶🎵🎶😎👍
Lol ,, deep down I had a feeling those flames weren't gonna budge, those furnaces were tough, it needs a new fan-limit control and vent pipe of course and let her roll.... It's also very possible that someone in the past installed the wrong fan-limit control with the wrong probe length..
Clean it, install new fan limit and fix the exhaust duct. Maybe find or replace the rollout door that's missing. Probably make one and put in a roll out switch. 200 dollars tops.
I'm running the original 44 year old Borg Warner (York) gas furnace in my house. Just last week, it passed a combustion analysis and heat exchanger inspection with flying colors. They don't build them like they used to.
Nice blue flame and steady when the blower is going. You simply have to wonder why the USA has decided to build junk these days vs. honest equipment like this one. More videos of the old stuff might just help us in the public get more value out of things the more we expose them to current junk on the market.
In a weird way… we should be glad they shelve out junk. Keeps the economy humming along! How many jobs would we all be out if they made shit to be indestructible?
Those Tappans & Chrysler Air Temps we’re notorious for small cracks along the welds, seldom blew the flames off the burners but definitely would blow air. Good example why B vents are required by code in unconditioned areas nowadays. Amazed any of those things are left. Have fun putting that new Train unit in 👍.
She’s a crusty one mama! I’m surprised where the fan / limit is located, I would think it would at least be a few inches closer to the heat exchanger but who am I to second guess the manufacturer. I was half expecting to hear a belt driven blower too. Cool old piece of equipment I’m glad you published this video.
I lost my eyebrows to one almost exactly like that one. I had just got in the business, that was 19 years ago. Those things are HEAVY. And they hardly ever quit. Gas gussling dinosaur, but reliable IF you keep thermocouple for it in stock. Usually a 24" is perfect. Definitely needs double Wall vent pipe.
Don’t be ASCARED Theodore , those old Tappins are beasts. That unit still may have a few seasons in it. A little blow back isn’t all that scary. Those flames didn’t even flicker. May be time for a change just for efficiency. You could have replaced those vent elbows just to tide it over until you could change it out. 👍🇨🇦
I was going to say, a fan switch and elbows and that furnace still has loads of life left in it. I had a house with a 1962 gravity furnace in it, and in 2001 it was still heating the house just fine. A new thermocouple now and then and she was running good. That is a great furnace. Just a little TLC and remove and clean out those burner elements. Some people I swear.
That’s a real jewel. Hopefully you just replace the vent pipe and let it keep on keeping on. It’d be a shame to replace that with one of our modern pieces of junk that we have now
Great crawl space shot I was wondering what happend to all those gas grill lighters from the dollar store went. People say "They don't make,em like they use to" and its a good thing but it is a war lord. The cameras on phones sure paints a good picture when only you eyes are looking at the decay.
I retired from so cal gas co 10 years ago i`m surprised the gas valve wasn`t leaking past the o ring around the stem below the reset on/off know, a common issue with the honeywell valves. be sure to have them get you to check it annually.
That furnace is probably older than 38 years old. We have a similar Rheem horizontal furnace at work that still works, although it's in a part of the building that's seldom used so it rarely runs. Blue paint and I'd say it is either from the '50s or '60s. It takes forever to start the blower (as Rod Graff mentioned in his comment) and has a weird mechanical limit (literally a thermocouple tied into a separate mechanical gas valve) for draft hood spillage. Still works like a charm but probably incredibly inefficient compared to the Lennox Pulse 21 furnaces that heat the rest of the building. It should all be replaced but the new equipment won't last nowhere near as long.
Wow ! Those where built solid like a tank ! I’m sure that furnace has be running up bill . With its age & the availability for parts that furnace should be replaced.
"Just change some vent elbows and a switch, and it will keep running" - People who complain "You were just out here 3 months ago!" When it lights their house on fire or dumps exhaust into their houses.
Yikes! Some vent pipe, a new V-belt for that blower motor, a few drops of 3-in-One oil and a brand spanking new filter and... there yea go. Good for a few more years of 75% efficiency heating.... Customer may turn off gas pilot when not in use to save on gas. lol
You could say he got his money's worth out of that dinosaur. If he had invested in a high efficiency furnace 10 years ago he would be further ahead. Thxs for the vids!
I like the video i love old equipment it is really interesting how they did some things back in the day now i believe in replacing things like this but im also broke as a joke so honest question if this was my unit and i asked you to clean it to fix the explosion problem at ignition fix the exhaust vent to make it safe and install a new thermal couple so i can save to get a new unit but get some time of course have carbon monoxide detectors installed if not already present i don’t want to die i have experience with this and a bad furnace in real life not good anyway knowing what you know would you fix it
Mass production catering to a world demanding lower and lower prices for goods is the reason nothing lasts long these days. That and planned obsolescence coz you need the latest and greatest furnace
That's a changeout for sure Ted. Talk them into some AC while you're at it :). That old girl served for a long time, now it's time to put in something that will last maybe half that long if it's lucky.
as rusty, dirty and clogged as those burners are, it's for sure has high levels of CO gas chooching out. that also explains the poor ignition and blast off that about removed your hair. 🥳🥸🤯

Looks like it only needs a new fan limit switch and a few new vent pipe elbows and the thing will probably run for another five to ten years.
The rusty burners are trash.

Our 1964 furnace is still working fine, albeit with new wiring and a new gas valve
Ted, you know if there was something wrong with that heat exchanger your flames would definitely be doing the Wango Tango!!! That's perfect for Crazy Teddy, the Motor City Madman.
🎶🎵🎶🎵🎶🎵🎶🎵🎶😎👍
That's back when they made 'em!
Man I thought that was older than 35 years. Great video

Worked on one with a similar burner setup. Was a Magic Chef. Thought they only made stoves, blew my mind when I saw that monster in the crawl space.
The Magic Chef name has been replaced by Airease at the Allied Air division of Lennox.
i bet with a new pipe and a cleaning this furnace would live annother decade
I know a lady who has a gravity furnace still heating her home.

Are you ready for this......profit.
Problem is that a lot of things, anything really,is being made by a certain country whose name is that which shall be unspoken .
There is no money in reliability.
In a weird way… we should be glad they shelve out junk. Keeps the economy humming along! How many jobs would we all be out if they made shit to be indestructible?

38 years old, that thing was 38 years old when I started in the trade in 93
Old rail burner, it takes while to heat up the cast iron heat exchanger.
UNCLE TED!, Good Call!!!!!!! 👍👍
I can hear customer , can you just patch it up to get me through until I can replace it. Nice to see old furnace cranking along.
Good little vid Ted and good call leaving it off ...
a few parts and good vacuuming
What a beautiful shoelace blowtorch igniter.

Would love to see a follow video of the changeout if you get it

agreed!!!!
clean it up and put a new fan/limit switch on it good to go for years
I feel the same way. I'll make it last forever.
I was waiting for massive rollout when it lit
Looks like one of those old Consolidated Industries units that were recalled.
The flames were surisingly blue considering how crusty the burners are, definitely time for a new one.
Why? The longer it runs the more money you save.
yeah, a new elbow will do the trick. glad to see you checking it.
Great crawl space shot I was wondering what happend to all those gas grill lighters from the dollar store went. People say "They don't make,em like they use to" and its a good thing but it is a war lord. The cameras on phones sure paints a good picture when only you eyes are looking at the decay.

Check it, clean it and fix the vent. Good for another 40 years....
That long horizontal exhaust flue was never acceptzble

Was that a Studebaker in the driveway? 😎
Wow ! Those where built solid like a tank ! I’m sure that furnace has be running up bill . With its age & the availability for parts that furnace should be replaced.
I think it's fair to say they got their money's worth out of that thing
Missed you Ted😉
That rollout was juat the old techs shaving kit from 35 years ago sure saved on razors when u singe all the hair off your stache
So is Ted gonna fix the flue for the guy or say you need a new one.. flames looked perfect lol. Some techs see to much work and rather sell a furnace
"Just change some vent elbows and a switch, and it will keep running"
- People who complain "You were just out here 3 months ago!" When it lights their house on fire or dumps exhaust into their houses.
That looks similar to a consolidated industries furnace that was recalled. Maybe it was made by Consolidated and Trappen is just the label.
It’s 65% efficient folks.
Maybe when it left the factory it was 65%
Definitely an antique, looks like an old space heater converted to forced air.
😂😂😂😂😂 You made me laugh out loud Ted! 👍👍🦈🦈🦈🦈
Nothing like the sound of a crackling gas appliance.
That flue pipe definitely is got issues and definitely unsafe
that's, a bomb, just waiting for the right time, BOOM
Definitely time for a upgrade.

What year is it ??? The furnace
Wow... Tough old unit there. Throw a new tailpipe on it and run it another 38 years! ;)
I like the video i love old equipment it is really interesting how they did some things back in the day now i believe in replacing things like this but im also broke as a joke so honest question if this was my unit and i asked you to clean it to fix the explosion problem at ignition fix the exhaust vent to make it safe and install a new thermal couple so i can save to get a new unit but get some time of course have carbon monoxide detectors installed if not already present i don’t want to die i have experience with this and a bad furnace in real life not good anyway knowing what you know would you fix it
Flue probably full of soot too and rust.
Time for a new furnace 😊😊😊😊
cant leave it on regardless the blower does not stay on but for a few
New flue pipe, new thermocouple, clean burners, good to go. Simpler is better, IMHO.
That's ancient!
run jeff run
RUN!
Wow just wow
They sure don't build em like they used to 😂
Premier.
Class action suit.
Lots of mfg.put their name on them.
Nox rods were the demise.
How did they react when you told them they had to buy a new furnace
$$$ 😢 WHAT ??? 😢
The duct is done, not so the furnace!
That's an old furnace. Did they get their monies worth?
Mass production catering to a world demanding lower and lower prices for goods is the reason nothing lasts long these days. That and planned obsolescence coz you need the latest and greatest furnace
👍
burners just need a good blow out with some compressed air.
Shhheesshh!
I never put my face in front of a furnace lighting up Old or New ..
It's a ducane dedicated horizontal where we're at. Seen many of homes burn to the foundation because of those.
Your videos always has dust /dirt floating around lol
Hopefully you can get a change-out on this one.
Wango Tango
Iike Know
That's a changeout for sure Ted. Talk them into some AC while you're at it :). That old girl served for a long time, now it's time to put in something that will last maybe half that long if it's lucky.
Hello carbon monoxide.
catawampus unit belongs in the smith oleum museum
Wow Ted, a new heating system is the right move other wise the house may be be blown off its foundations 👍
Crusty
Yea, that's a nope. Needs replaced.
as rusty, dirty and clogged as those burners are, it's for sure has high levels of CO gas chooching out. that also explains the poor ignition and blast off that about removed your hair. 🥳🥸🤯
