An update from a longtime owner of this truck. Parts availability has grown. You can literally search Amazon for "wltoys 12428 upgrade parts" and find shock upgrades, tire upgrades, differential upgrades, metal body parts, everything. You could easily put $300+ into this inexpensive little truck. So I'm going to help guide you through what I consider essential upgrades. > Metal gear differentials are *mandatory.* If you bash this truck and slam the power and skid and jump and do all the stuff Nate and Abby do with it, you're going to strip both differentials. I wrecked mine inside of 6 months. Upgrading them to metal gears is an affordable piece that'll dramatically improve your beloved truck. > If the bouncy, bouncy shocks aren't to your liking, you can drop some oil-filled shocks in there for a perfectly reasonable price and end up with a far more "planted" truck. Personally I enjoy the bounciness, makes it feel just more lively. > The stock tires aren't great. You can dramatically improve its grippiness in hill climbs and general off-road performance by installing larger, wider tires. Seriously, never underestimate the effect good tires can have in off-roading.
Kristjan Kalda This is a common issue with these buggies; the ESC/Rx isn’t quite up to the performance demands put upon it, and can indeed overheat. Unfortunately, beyond replacing it with an upgraded unit, there’s not much you can do other than reduce the load on it. Frequent high-throttle Fwd/Rev direction changes put stress on the entire drivetrain, from ESC, all the way through to the tires; it even makes the battery drain quicker. So minimizing this type of operation should help the ESC stay cooler. Also, weight-reduction is always helpful. My biggest recommendation with these buggies is to remove that silly spare tire from the back of the rollcage! It makes the buggy much more prone to rollovers, and adds unnecessary weight. And removing the body panels could provide more airflow to the electronic components, although it would also expose them to more contaminants, if you drive in dirt, sand, water or mud.

Hi there guys Rob again. You were saying how good the wl toys buggy in blue was and that it was almost the same as the 12428. I agree so much I have one and can't fault it in any way. It's fast it looks good and if you turn down the throttle you can then use it as a Crawler with ease. I've given mine to Lisa my wife for her to learn with an she's like me, she absolutely loves it. It makes a fantastic drifter and basher when on full power. Yet makes a brilliant crawler when turned down. On the trail on an evening with all the LEDs on it looks absolutely brilliant and its faultless. Plus it's unbreakable too. I've tried and tried to break it. But how ever hard I try I never seem to be able too. I totally love to play with this buggy and love jumping it off ramps all the time. With it doing between 43 and 45 miles an hour fairly it's great even off road too. I do like the fact you can bash it by The way but I wont ever be doing that ever. I haven't ever done it though and I never would. I think it would be very interesting on the short course, especially as it's so fast I'd give the buggy 11 out of ten every day of the week with out fail. One time I drove this thing up a ramp and it flew up three feet and landed on its back, and it still works perfectly today. Thank you so much for creating this channel! I have this truck and its amazing. modified the battery tray, change the rear differential and converted to brushless due to burned ESC. this is always in the back of my car during my RC itch. it just put smile in my face every flip-over.

This is one of my favorite videos of yours, partially because of the RC, and mostly because of the joy in this! I just purchased one myself- largely because of this video, and because you explicitly mention it as a must-buy in your 2019 recommendations (over three years later!!) Also - this thing has a high load cutoff, so it's possible that when it gave up on the hill, the load limit kicked in, in which case you just turn it off and on again. But 12 minutes of hard bashing on a Li-ion is not bad. What a great little RC!

Thank you for your honesty. I just bought the 12428. Am new RCing. A silver VW Rabbit was my childhood RC car. Went in the forward direction, and left in reverse. This car is seemingly way far advanced than that... LOL.
This video, your recommendations, and a few other "top ten best rc cars under $100" lists influenced my purchasing this WLtoys 12428, 1:12 scale buggy. I did it via your hyperlink to Gearbest's flash sale. I've used it only 2 days so far but so far so good. It comes with a EU-US adaptor and is completely RTR ready to run. The six LEDs are awesome in the evening or at night. I also purchased and am waiting on a Feiyou-03 Desert Eagle, which is the 12824's competition. It is red, around the same price and has a 390 brushless motor. They say they drive very similar to each other. Always good to have or purchase an extra battery or two, which are compatible for the two models I mentioned, it's a 7.4V 1500 mAh. I will update this post. allenm00 yes this is the main reason i bought two of these last Christmas. However nothing has broken yet apart from a small bodywork chip from one of the car when my son drove it at full speed against a rock. Amazing RC car. Quality / Price is off the scale.

Seth Haughian NO NO NO DONT TRUST CHINESE BRANDS WHEN THEY SAY WATER PROOF it will only last for a while in water then it will fail but after it dries it should be working fine again
Based on my research, I'd say that it's "Weather Resistant". Since that is what the advertisement on Gearbest emphasizes, "play with it no matter what weather". In short - it can handle being splashed through shallow puddles, bashed over muddy terrain, or run during a modest rainstorm. I wouldn't plow it through deep water, immerse it, or take it out during monsoon season though, even though it can probably take such once or twice.

I purchased one of these about month ago (and use it almost everyday!) and it is definitely a blast to drive, it's my favorite r/c I've ever owned so far. At the time of purchase I paid $55 (free shipping) for mine from a site called tomtop and it only took about a week to arrive due to them having a US warehouse ^^ I hear a lot of people complain about it not having a throttle trim, but my transmitter has it and I can confirm it works so there may be slight variations between models? I dunno my biggest recommendation for anyone about to buy one is to invest in either a few new OEM diffs, or look into metal diff gears. There's a forum post (on rcforums I believe?) where someone found and linked where to get metal gears (I believe they're from Remo). FYI, my truck is currently rwd because of a worn out front diff....though on the bright side, I can say it still handles pretty well on only 2 wheel drive, lol Also, if you're like me and can only primarily drive on the street, you'll want a few sets of extra tires, or at least a separate set of street only tires because these knubbies wear down really quickly on the street...constantly doing burnouts and wheelies doesn't help either, lol

hello there i have this buggy already 7months. running once a week. one issue only the propshaft got. broken and replaced with a metallic one. rear oil shocks KYX for 1/10 scale installed in this buggy 😂 whole painted now in matt black: looks like a little Mad Max car so cool enjoy!

This is my favorite video because I was looking for an “above toy grade” 4x4 RC vehicle and came across this video which led to me doing lots of research on it and subscribing to your page. I’ve watched several of your videos and keep up to date with new ones. Thanks guys! -A fellow Kentuckian!
Mine finally arrived. A few comments: 1> They revised the controller. The new transmitter now includes a throttle trim, to turn down the sensitivity of the throttle trigger. It's also a little bigger, and takes 4 AA batteries. 2> This thing is SO MUCH FUN. 3> Put an FPV camera on it. Seriously. Go do that now. You will have all the fun. What I did was put a rubber band around the top lid, then pin the micro AIO camera against the top of that front V strut and the top lid with the rubber band. Run a wire to the back of the truck, then put a small battery in the extra space in the battery compartment to power it. This combination will outmatch the Ratings King!
finally you get it on your channel. the only thing I didn't like on these RC are the not oilfield shocks! but for this price it is awesome! and if you want you can upgrade it too! nice

Do you have any tips against overheating? Atleast that's why I think it keeps cutting out when there's still battery left.

The correct term for this type of truck is a Rock racer. Independent suspension on front and a solid axle on the back.

This is the my favorite video for your contest because the RC truck is actually pretty cool compared to the 2 drones. I watch your videos a lot however I rarely comment. I mostly watch for your drone videos I feel you give an honest opinion on your reviews. Also you don't only do videos on high dollar RC's, I have watched way more affordable RC video's on your channel then on most of the others I've watched. Keep up the good work.

Seth Haughian NO NO NO DONT TRUST CHINESE BRANDS WHEN THEY SAY WATER PROOF it will only last for a while in water then it will fail but after it dries it should be working fine again
Based on my research, I'd say that it's "Weather Resistant".
Since that is what the advertisement on Gearbest emphasizes, "play with it no matter what weather".
In short - it can handle being splashed through shallow puddles, bashed over muddy terrain, or run during a modest rainstorm.
I wouldn't plow it through deep water, immerse it, or take it out during monsoon season though, even though it can probably take such once or twice.

I purchased one of these about month ago (and use it almost everyday!) and it is definitely a blast to drive, it's my favorite r/c I've ever owned so far. At the time of purchase I paid $55 (free shipping) for mine from a site called tomtop and it only took about a week to arrive due to them having a US warehouse ^^ I hear a lot of people complain about it not having a throttle trim, but my transmitter has it and I can confirm it works so there may be slight variations between models? I dunno
my biggest recommendation for anyone about to buy one is to invest in either a few new OEM diffs, or look into metal diff gears. There's a forum post (on rcforums I believe?) where someone found and linked where to get metal gears (I believe they're from Remo). FYI, my truck is currently rwd because of a worn out front diff....though on the bright side, I can say it still handles pretty well on only 2 wheel drive, lol
Also, if you're like me and can only primarily drive on the street, you'll want a few sets of extra tires, or at least a separate set of street only tires because these knubbies wear down really quickly on the street...constantly doing burnouts and wheelies doesn't help either, lol

This is my favorite video because I was looking for an “above toy grade” 4x4 RC vehicle and came across this video which led to me doing lots of research on it and subscribing to your page. I’ve watched several of your videos and keep up to date with new ones. Thanks guys! -A fellow Kentuckian!
Mine finally arrived.
A few comments:
1> They revised the controller. The new transmitter now includes a throttle trim, to turn down the sensitivity of the throttle trigger. It's also a little bigger, and takes 4 AA batteries.
2> This thing is SO MUCH FUN.
3> Put an FPV camera on it. Seriously. Go do that now. You will have all the fun.
What I did was put a rubber band around the top lid, then pin the micro AIO camera against the top of that front V strut and the top lid with the rubber band.
Run a wire to the back of the truck, then put a small battery in the extra space in the battery compartment to power it.
This combination will outmatch the Ratings King!
finally you get it on your channel. the only thing I didn't like on these RC are the not oilfield shocks! but for this price it is awesome! and if you want you can upgrade it too! nice
