Northernlion if you're looking for an anime that isnt crazy you should look into Naoki Urasawa's "Monster". The plot is pretty crazy but nobody transforms or anything like that.

Monster seems like it would be up NL's alley. No fantastical elements, just pure character and plot brilliance. He might also enjoy Steins;Gate once you get past the first few episodes into the meat of the story. It technically doesn't have any "time travel," only altering of the past and diverging worldlines.
