This is my favorite Ralfy review. Not because of any fondness for the whisky. It's the sincerity, honesty, and passion displayed in the final 20 or so seconds.
I bought my first "smokey" bottle of whiskey not too long ago. It is Ardbeg 10yo. At first I could smell croghan bologna and smoke. I did not like the nose or taste. I was more used to the sweet and spicey whisky's but thanks to all these ralfy reviews I've been trying all sorts of scotch whisky's. After a few more glasses of the Ardbeg I have now aquired a taste for it. My 10yo Ardbeg came with a sample 50ml bottle of Uigeadail and I must say its the best I've had so far. EXCELLENT STUFF!
Just got a bottle for my husband's birthday. Hope he enjoys. I will definitely share your review with him. By the way Scotland and its people along with whiskey, are one of the treasures of this world ;-)
Watching at the end of 2020 -- I remember watching this back in '09. The early Ralfy reviews were so good,...and different. I love the new ones too -- but the condensed versions had a real specialness to them. I bit more mystery.
So sorry if I might have already mentioned--------but I cannot stress enough how good it would be to see you review Ardbeg AN OA sometime..... Slainte from Wisconsin USA!!!!
thanks :) currently had a bottle of it that i really didn't liked for a year, and now after i saw the video , i got a glencairn glass , put in the uigeadail , added a little water , let it sit for a minute , then twisted the glass a little , and wow , totally different taste , now i like it a lot better :) :) thanks! i really like belvenie 12 , lagavulin 16 , laphroig 10 , macallan 12 , dalmor 12 , highland park 12 , smokehead , johnnie walker black label
This is the first scotch review video I've watched--very helpful! My mouth is literally watering, lol. I loved the bit about the Gaelic at the beginning ... I'm 1/2 Scottish by blood and spent a semester at University of Aberdeen, so I have a fondness for Gaelic. We even named our daughter Ceilidh :) Okay, off to watch more whiskey reviews!
Thanks for taking the time to reply. I will get my hands on a bottle of Glenmorangie Original next time before the Lasanta runs out and see if i can taste the difference. Also have started NOT putting ice in with my nips' after seeing a few people who review whisky do not use it. Now i always try it neat and then maybe a dash of water if required. it's made a hell of a difference in the smell and flavour. Thanks mate : )
G day Ralfy. I recently came back from Fiji and there was a bottle of this in the duty free section. Just opened it last night WOW it tastes like a christmas cake. Also had a block of dark chocolate with roasted almonds with it. I was in heaven
Quick poll: Uigaedial or the 10 Year Islay for my next bottle. To take into consideration. I like Lagavulin 16 mostly. I just had Highland park and thought it could be a bit more smokey like the Laphroaig's.
I just tried this Malt. It is awesome. I really like the Aberlour A'bunadh and the Laphroaig Quarter Cask that you reviewed. These are the first three bottles I have purchased. I like them all for their own purposes, but I the Ardbeg's finish is really where it is a step above the other two.
My god, what a whisky this is, got just under half a bottle left and will be buying more. Best I can describe it is a dark nutty chocolate while licking a peated bonfire, I'm getting new flavours each time I have a dram, great stuff.
They are both wonderful. I find the Lagavulin a little easier/everyday dram which although still complex doesn't quite have the punch of the Uigaedail. Either one will be awesome, but if you can only afford one and have some whisky experience go for the Uigaedail.
Tried the Uilgeadail. I like the Lagavulin 16 better. Only notes I get is smoke in the Uilgeadail. Not that complex. Love the iodine and fruitier notes in the Lag.
Hello Ralfy, on the very opposite end of the flavour spectrum (or not that far) - is there a review of the Glendronach 15 Revival planned? Sherry, I love it (as much as a good peaty Islay)!
Uigeadail is easily my favourite Ardbeg, even more than the Supernova which I didnt think i'd be able to beat. Absolute nectar, for the price its unbeatable.
I got into single malts barely a year ago (very much thanks to and with help from Ralfy). Through this great year I have established that strongly peated whisky is certainly my thing. The Ardbeg 10 y.o. is maybe my favourite single malt so far so I am dying to try the Uigeadail. I am wondering - is it going up in price?
@EnzoTorino I find Ardbeg to be more subtle than many well-known Islays. Compare the Laphroiag 10 to Arbeg 10. The Nam Beist is an amazingly complex bottle with beautiful creaminess; the smoke doesn't hit you over the head.
Sir Dangolf. I bit the bullet and tied the Bruichladdich 10 Year Old. Delightful! Rafly describes it better than I ever could. The Laproaig Cask Strength is an extremely different beast (the Bruichalddich isn't a beast-like at all)--but I've found a big difference between the 2011 and the 2012 Batch#4 Laphroaig Cask Strength. Have you tried both?
I have 2 bottles of Uigeadail, 1 of which was purchased this summer, and another just the other day. The difference in color, nose, and tasting notes of the two are as distinct as night and day! The new is significantly darker and doesn't have the same smoky peat blast of the older one. Still good, but disappointing because I prefer the profile of the older. The new label mentions that it was imported by Moet NY/NY and has a serial #L8, the older one lacks a # or import label. What gives?
About Glenmo and Sherry Influence: Ralfy, have you tried the Glenmo Sonnalta PX? Maybe you wouldn't review it because it's too expensive for beeing NAS, but I think this time, the Glenmo/Sherry combo REALLY works. It's around 55 Euros per liter, dunno how much it is in scotland... And for the Oogie: Despite changing of times, tastes, everything, it is still my most loved whisky since I first tasted it back in 2004! Lovely stuff, as someone we know would say.
Thanks again. I'm about 50 years older, but have also just gotten into single malts. I'm not willing to spend more $ than, for example, Laphroaig Cask Strength. Since you're young and energetic, I think it should fall on you to try the Bruichladdich 10 Year Old. Let me know!
2 points off each you say? Well, I had the 10 year old back in march and I just loved it! I think by far the best islay I've had (maybe Kilchoman sherry release tops it) but as good as it was, there's always room for improvement! The bowmore Tempest is up there with Ardbeg 10 but that's not saying much for bowmore given the price difference!
Any thoughts on how the ARDBOG they just released compares to this Uigeadail? I tried the bog today and was quite impressed, beautiful sweet savoury saltiness going on. Quite dry and intense. Tossing up between the U and the bog.
ralfy and others, how do you get over the peat blast to taste the other flavors in this whisky? When I opened my bottle it made the entire house smell like smokey peat. It was the most unreal experience I've ever had with a drink. How did your palette conform?
ralfy, I'm in the market for an Ardbeg sometime soon. I had settled on the Uigeadail (which I have tried and loved), but it turns out a store near me has one bottle each of the 1978 and 17 year old at prices not much higher than the Oogie. Advice?
Thanks for the Bruichladdich tip. Have you tried the Ten Year Old? We seem to have very similar tastes. (My local store has warned people off the Ten Year Old because a few customers say it tastes like pure aspirin.) Thanks again.
Hey Ralfy, I'd like to try one of these Islay whiskies with sherry influence. I am considering Uigeadail, Laphroiag triple wood, Lagavulin distiller's edition. Also I just saw Arbeg Day in my local shop (although from what I've read about it seems like a younger gimmicky version of Uigeadail). What do you consider the best Islay whisky with sherry influence? Thanks and I really enjoy your reviews!
Hey Ralfy - not meaning to sound redundant, but as we're well into 2013 - how have the more recent bottlings of the Uigeadail been holding up? I'm looking to place an order online sometime soon, and as we know this whisky isn't cheap. Thanks again for all you do!
Hey Ralfy, Tried Uigeadail for the first time and I'm in love. Just got into scotch a few months ago and I cant go back into anything else. I was curious about Galileo. Whats your opinion about Ardbeg's Galileo?
Ralfy, have not tired this one yet but love the 10 year. 4 years ago you gave the Uigidail a 92 and the 10yr a 90, Have they held up or has the quality changed?
@EnzoTorino To be more precise, the smokiness is still there, but is masked by something else which seems to have been added. Could it be that Ardbeg has "dumbed-down" the flavor for the American market (see import notice) by adding caramel (see darker color)? T'would be a shame if this were so, indeed.
@EnzoTorino If you are drinking L8 and earlier, you are a lucky man. If you like more blast, Supernova is the drink for you. The 2010 roars in like a lion. Amazing stuff.
@onetimeonthegoodfoot It's not too late. This is the more mature "brother" to Ten. But as with all whisky, each year's bottling may be a bit different. If you look at the bottle code, you will see, for example, an "L11". This indicates that your Ardbeg was bottled in 2011. I love Ardbeg; I will drink just about any bottle of Ardbeg. BUT this year's bottle may be slightly different than last year's. Serious Ardbeggians hunt by code. I wouldn't worry too much - just drink it.
Why would sherry influence work well with this ? But with Glenmorangie Lasanta when they add it you say it's poncy. I'm new to this you obviously know quite a deal about them. I never liked scotch growing up but as we get older our tastes change and i have both of these and enjoy sipping on both of them.
So is it too late to buy this whisky? Given the phenomenal reviews and the incredible buzz about Ardbeg, will they be ramping up production? Do you have a rule of thumb: "once a whiskey gets this much acclaim, I stop buying it"
Another excellent review :) this baby is more expensive than Lagavulin lol. :D Anyway, what about Cardhu, ralfy? It's my poison and don't see a review in your channel yet? Cheers :)
I agree. A couple of years ago Uigedail was complex, rich, a wonder. I've had only one good bottle. The second two were flat, one (or two) dimensional, boring. Anyone else experiencing this? It's not happening with Laphroaig--Quarter Cask, Cask Strength.
Yup. I mean the Uigeadail is good, but doesn't merit the high scores that it usually gets. It is indeed very boring. No complexity at all. The Laphroaig cask strength is super complex and less so is the Lag 16. I like the lag 16 due to the iodine note...just love it. I guess you live and learn. Lately I've found the Bruichladdich Rocks a super value. My favorite scotch at the moment and it is very affordable at around $40.
@ralfystuff Ha, all three? I'm not a collector and wouldn't buy these bottles as an investment to sell later (my state has very prohibitive liquor shipping laws). This would be solely for taste. Thanks!
Ralfy, here you claim that "finishing" can work, as evidenced by the Lagavulin Double Matured. However, in an earlier video, you said you would not review the Glenmorangie Quinta Ruban or their other finished whiskies because the idea was gimmicky. Which is it? Will you review the other Glenmorangie offerings now?
Hi Ralfy. Hey in light of a recurring comment in many of yor V-logs [ie. to paraphrase ... "I tried it once before & it wasn't good but this time its quite good] Will u be "revisiting" any of the 'done and dusted' reviews being as whiskey is such a dynamic spirit and the palette an ever-learning sense?! This whisky really is the dogs bollocks (permit my swearing just for artistic license). I have a bottle here. Sooooo good. Nice to start the evening on the 10 year old Ardbeg and then move on up to this salty beast.
My latest version of Oogie noses and tastes almost like the Aberlour Abunadh. Very sweet sherry, chocolate and almost no peat and tar. I think the sherry speaking way too loud here. Add a huge amount of the old peat, tar, lacquer and smoked bacon notes here and this would be perfect!
Ah, the Uigeadail is a lovely super peated dram in it's own right but when I taste it I can't help but remember the powerful yet nuanced and delicious Islay perfection that was Ardbeg's Airigh Nam Beist, and I get all wistful, and a tad disappointed. Man was that stuff great, polished off my last bottle X-mas 2017, will probably never own another!
@SmileDudeMusic Yes I have tried that - I like the complexity and sophistication of the Lagavulin 16 year old but it lacks the intense sweetness, depth and youthful peat of this Ardbeg. Also like Ralphy says, with the Uigeadail, its always one step ahead of you - the Lagavulin, despite its complexity, isn't quite on that level. Making it less of a branded whisky could help, I'm sure, and in the Uk at least, the Ardbeg offers better value for money in my opinion.

I was put onto this whisky by a colleague and I am blown away by it every time I take a dram. Love it, can't get enough of it.

The best whisky I have ever tried. The Uigeadail alone made my trip to Scotland worthwhile.
This is just one of your many fine reviews, but I give it extra points for "having a good laugh at the sassenachs."
Oh to return to these days when the reviews were quick and simple.
My god, what a whisky this is, got just under half a bottle left and will be buying more. Best I can describe it is a dark nutty chocolate while licking a peated bonfire, I'm getting new flavours each time I have a dram, great stuff.

Never had a bad Ardbeg...deffinently one of my favourite distilleries...
Well said. Ardbeg and Glenmorangie never disappoint.
ralfy,

This is the king, definitely. Ralfy is dead on. HUGE peat and smoke, but a NICE smooth sweet creamy sherry taste to it.
Thanks for the Bruichladdich tip. Have you tried the Ten Year Old? We seem to have very similar tastes. (My local store has warned people off the Ten Year Old because a few customers say it tastes like pure aspirin.) Thanks again.

Ralfy, what is your opinion between the Uigedail and the alligator? Alligator is harder to find but is it that more better?
So Uigedail is your favorite in the Ardbeg range for now?
Hi Ralfy
due to my budget I have to choose one of the Uigaedial or the Lagavulin 16 .. which one do you recommend ?
Ralfy, have not tired this one yet but love the 10 year. 4 years ago you gave the Uigidail a 92 and the 10yr a 90, Have they held up or has the quality changed?
Ha Ralfi can't wait for your review of Ardbeg Super Nova
Should i put a bit of water in my glass when i first try this?!
@EnzoTorino To be more precise, the smokiness is still there, but is masked by something else which seems to have been added. Could it be that Ardbeg has "dumbed-down" the flavor for the American market (see import notice) by adding caramel (see darker color)? T'would be a shame if this were so, indeed.
... someone brought along Marshmallow and Glühwein... next time i'll try to discover these - a really great picture for me. Thank you very much.
@EnzoTorino If you are drinking L8 and earlier, you are a lucky man. If you like more blast, Supernova is the drink for you. The 2010 roars in like a lion. Amazing stuff.
Is this the 2009 bottling?

just ordererd one, hope it is really that good
Hey Ralfy, just got my hands on a bottle of Ardbog, any experience with this one?
Another excellent review :) this baby is more expensive than Lagavulin lol. :D Anyway, what about Cardhu, ralfy? It's my poison and don't see a review in your channel yet?
Cheers :)
I agree. A couple of years ago Uigedail was complex, rich, a wonder. I've had only one good bottle. The second two were flat, one (or two) dimensional, boring. Anyone else experiencing this? It's not happening with Laphroaig--Quarter Cask, Cask Strength.
sherry + peat CAN'T BE BEAT ---> 100% VERY AGREE R A L F Y!!!
when it comes to peat whisky , Arbeg is the one to my test,
Yup. I mean the Uigeadail is good, but doesn't merit the high scores that it usually gets. It is indeed very boring. No complexity at all. @ralfystuff
Ha, all three? I'm not a collector and wouldn't buy these bottles as an investment to sell later (my state has very prohibitive liquor shipping laws). This would be solely for taste.
Thanks!
Ralfy, if this gets only a 92, what gets a higher score?! hehe cheers.
Do you know how old this malt is?
Ralfy, here you claim that "finishing" can work, as evidenced by the Lagavulin Double Matured. where can i find this glasses?
Hi Ralfy. Hey in light of a recurring comment in many of yor V-logs [ie. to paraphrase ...
"I tried it once before & it wasn't good but this time its quite good]
Will u be "revisiting" any of the 'done and dusted' reviews being as whiskey is such a dynamic spirit and the palette an ever-learning sense?! I think this is a valid concern. whattayathink?? cheers mate.

Can anyone confirm that this bottle is No-Chillfillered & No E150a ?
It will be highly appreciated... And also Aberlour a'Bunadh ? Those are in my top 10 list,, and I REALLY hope they don't have e150a in it ... Dear, Malt mates,,, please provide me ACCURATE INFORMATION...
Nevermind with a response Ralfy...I just saw an answer to my own question in which you replied to another poster here (with basically the same question I had).
Hi Ralfy, first time 've seen you today. Love your delivery and personality.
Have you tasted Ardbeg Alligator? if so, what do you think?
regards
Harpreet
This whisky really is the dogs bollocks (permit my swearing just for artistic license). I have a bottle here. Sooooo good. Nice to start the evening on the 10 year old Ardbeg and then move on up to this salty beast.
Thanks a lot ralfy - appreciated. :)
dont we love the sound of a popping cork :) thumbs up on that one! :D
Very nice whiskey grab a bottle you can't go wrong!
Picked up a bottle from my local SAQ today. but OUCH the price $155 CDN (75 pounds) is crazy. Talk about fleecing the public.
I don't know much about whiskey, so i was wondering, why do you add water?
when you taste a 57% alc glass of whiskey you'll understand;
When I'm going to buy a bottle of malt, I always check first what Jim Murray and Ralfy has to say.
At 00:26
I wonder what does the word "Uigeadail" mean in Scottish... any idea?
If you're still wondering a year later, it means "dark place" in Gaelic. It's the name of the loch that supplies the water to the Ardbeg distillery.
@Omnis2 You aren't supposed to conform to it, YOU EMBRACE IT!!!!!!
@ralfystuff thanks ralfy! i'm getting ready to make an overseas order, and ardbeg will definitely be on the list. i think it will be this one :)
You're a treasure!
Why did they go down so much?
Just came from Whisky Novice's latest review on this....for research purposes.
@ralfystuff
Hey Ralfy,
Malt Moron here. Is the Uigeadail, your highest rated whiskey in terms of malt marks? BTW, keep up the good work.
Cheers !
$170 in Canada. I won't be trying this for many many years on my budget.
whattayathink???
This is the best I ever did taste.
Tried a bottle from 2012 and was not that impressed. Basically got just smoke. Much prefer Laphroaig 10 yo cask strength and lagavulin 16.
No I haven't. I'm in my early 20s so I just got into scotch.
So i just went to the whisky shop cos and bought this bad boy because Ralfy won't let me come round to his house....
Hi ralfy keep up the revieuws i like you but ardeg is overrated
I think you just don't like the names. To call it "port wood" is ok, but "Quinta Ruban" is, well, poncy, I believe.
