Ardbeg 10 vs Uigeadail vs Corryvreckan

  • Ardbeg Ten Years Old is revered around the world as the peatiest, smokiest, most complex single malt of them all. Yet it does not flaunt the peat; rather it gives way to the natural sweetness of the malt to produce a whisky of perfect balance. Named World Whisky of the Year in 2008.
Non chill-filtered with a strength of 46% ABV.
    Uigeadail
In 2009, Jim Murray’s Whisky Bible named Ardbeg Uigeadail ‘World Whisky of the Year’ - in praise of its “utter silky brilliance” and “complexity on a level only a handful of distilleries in the world can even dream of reaching.”
Pronounced ‘Oog-a-dal’, it’s a special vatting that marries Ardbeg’s traditional deep, smoky notes with luscious, raisiny tones of old ex-Sherry casks. Ardbeg Uigeadail was voted by the 120,000+ strong Ardbeg Committee as their favourite Ardbeg.
    Non chill-filtered at 54.2% ABV
Ardbeg Corryvreckan takes its name from the famous whirlpool that lies to the north of Islay, where only the bravest souls dare to venture. Swirling aromas and torrents of deep, peaty, peppery taste lurk beneath the surface of this beautifully balanced dram. Like the whirlpool itself, Corryvreckan is not for the faint-hearted! Awarded The World’s Best Single Malt in 2010 and voted World Whisky of the Year in 2010.
    Non chill-filtered at 57.1% ABV

As a recent Ardbeg convert, I recently had the opportunity to compare the Uigeadail to the Corryvreckan and so far, for my money, I prefer the Uigeadail. I find the Corryvreckan lacks some of the drama of the Uigeadail, which is what I enjoy so much about it. The Corryvreckan seems to be the more balanced and dare I say, "muted" of the two.
I guess when I'm in the mood for a peated Scotch, I'm not really looking for subtlety.

This is an oldie but goodie!! I love all of these Ardbeg expressions and I think the UIG is my favourite!. I do love the higher ABV in the Corey but there's something that really grabs me with the UIG. The peat is a bit harsh in the Ten but someone could pour me any one of these beauties and I'd be happy. To be honest I really like the punch from the Ten. I usually want more peat, more smoke, a nice tar peat, a delicious cigar peat, but still the UIG is lovely and it's pulling as my fave of the 3 right now. In Canada the UIG is about $160.00 plus tax right now. Single malts are going up so much in price. I do love these! Terrific tasting notes guys from the palette! Hey I am in Vancouver so I noticed the RCMP cap right away! Cheers!

My first Smokey scotch was Ardbeg uigeadail, it was super heavy smoke at first, made me think I was more of a sweet, smooth guy. I tried Redbreast 12 Cask strength and Lustau, Glenfiddich 12,Bruichladdich 2010 Organic. Which I love, then something happened, came back to Ardbeg Uigeadail, and I loved the smoke. Now I'm a heavy Peat lover..

Just purchased Ardbeg uigeadail for the first time last night and it was Amazing. Up until last night, Ardbeg 10 was my favorite but the complexity of the uigeadail is amazing. I don't get "sweetness" from the uigeadail, rather I get a nice dark red wine note from it that I interpret as more "rich fruit" than "sweet". The front palate literally tastes like Im drinking dry sherry wine, and its not until the mid palate where that tangy/meaty and rich ardbeg smokieness comes in. The finish ends with a salted bacon note, grazzed with bbq sauce that was mingled with rich dry red wine. Simply Amazing.

Ardbeg 10 is really great, isn't it? :D Just tried it first time about 2 weeks ago, I'm in love with these peat infused isles scotches now. Haven't even touched my Wild Turkey Rare Breed bottle in this time xD Got the Corryvreckan on order atm, I love the lack of sweetness of the Ardbeg 10, the strong peat smell, and the bitter taste at the end. Corryvreckan should be just that, but one level higher. I'm excited not gonna lie lol

100% agree with Bart. The 10 is a magic drink with a singular character. It's delicious. I tasted the Uigeadail a few years after drinking the 10 religiously. For the first few drams I couldn't get my mind away from the 10... The Uigeadail seemed like a confused younger brother... BUT after a few drams I got it. Uigeadail is complex and really tasty with a little sherry influence, treacle and salty caramel influences. It's delicious.... BUT....BART.... you are on the money. The 10 knows who it is. It's simple and it's sensational. The Corryvreckan is just a gimmick...

Interesting review! Most of us brits find the two NAS expressions to be vastly different from the dry smoke if the 10. Both corry and oogie have a strong saline punch on the face that is unique, the oogie has a sweeter complexity due to the sherry casking. Corry has no sweetness at all, it's like being punched in the face and then laid down gently on a bed of cinders! If you like slightly peated sherried Islay malts try Bunnahabhain 12. Personally, corry is the king of peated islay but that's the fun we all have different tastes!

@@ScotchTestDummies Right, that makes sense - I've been respectfully working my way through a airport one-liter bottle over a longer period of time approaching it in different ways and I honestly find it almost smooth (within the style) when you come at it in certain ways and the layers of the smoke on the aftertaste I find quite delicate and velvety and subtle, compared to the bonfire style of say some Laphroighs. Some of it's ashen sure (though not ashtray, to me - lifelong non smoker here) but not limited to that - and the lingering sweetness I think carries it beautifully and in simple honest way ... straight from the bottle it can be a bit short-lived up front and I agree perhaps harsh if you will, but that really changes A LOT with time and gives way to something else ...

Enjoyed the Uigeadail! The weird thing is the first dram from the bottle was massive sherry, than the rest of the bottle I never got the same sherry experience. I just finished a bottle of Bowmore Darkest 15yo, very good but a different peat than Ardbeg.

the Bowmore Lamrig, cask strenght and so much better than the Darkest. More rich and more complex. If you can get your hands on it, it's a must.

If it doesn't state on the bottle that no colour is added, you have to assume that it is. Laphroaig is in a green bottle too but even the 18 says on the label that it has colour. It just doesn't say it in English. (German and Danish, as far as I can tell).

    • @ScotchTestDummies
      @ScotchTestDummies  8 лет назад

Certain countries have rules that it has to be on there. USA doesn't. You are correct if it doesn't say no colorant, assume it is in there. Thanks Colourless!

Isn't it great when you can buy a 10 yr scotch and love it. How often can you say that. The only peat scotch that I've had was the Famous Lagavulin 16 which was hard for me to finish and the Talisker 10 which wasn't to bad. Both of which are well under $100. Anyway's the Ardbeg Uigeadail is on my list being sherry influenced, cost me about $70 and rates as 97.5 PTS - 2013 WHISKY BIBLE WORLD WHISKY OF THE YEAR. Great video.

    1) Corry
    2) Uigeadail

Like all of these quite a bit, but Corry by a nose. More unusual and unique. Like it best cut to about 100 proof. And the Ten wins in bang-for-the-buck.

For the record, I am not anti "body-putty". With that said, I'm still looking for that 1970's unleaded gas waft. ha ha Enjoyed this. I have a question which is slightly off topic, but related. I'm a bit of a comic book and retro game collector. When you collect things of this nature, there is the whole cost/space issue. Just ask my wife. With the amount of Scotch and Whiskey you review.. unless you're borrowing it, how the heck do you store it? ha ha I mean, at some point, you reach critical mass. Had to ask...

I think I'm not going to try the Ardbeg 10, sounds to peaty for me. I left a comment about the Uigeadail on your other video. Just the right balance of peat, nice complex and a nice sweet note. I will have to pick up a 50ml sample of the Corryvreckan before I commit to a 750ml bottle. Uigeadail cost me $60 what a steal. Will let you know what I think about sampling the Corryvreckan before I spend $74.

    • @ScotchTestDummies

+Scotch Test Dummies Tried a 50ml sample of the Corryvreckan last night while watching the Warriors. Tried it neat and with water. It was to sharp, to strong even with water. If you add to much water you will kill the scotch profile. I can't imagine paying your scotch prices. I don't know why Kansas charges more than Ca. Our gas prices are higher, so is our housing. I guess that's the trade off?

Uigedail on other hand ia definently peaty taste and cherry sweetness. But corywrecken is real deal. But u cant take it neat. U need some milka cookies with chocolafe to open up its magic. Coz its dry its peaty and its tasteless like its almost alchemistry in ur mouth. I still tryjng to figure out the corywrecken but its definently in another ballpark
