I started trying peat with the Lagavulin 8 and quickly grew to love that expression, very quickly, and I fell in love with Lagavulin 16. Then I got to this outstanding Ardbeg expression and I truly love this complex profile. I love the flavours I am picking up from the bourbon and sherry casks and I get leather, walnuts, cloves and a definitely earthy quality. There is a citrus element that is wonderful but it's balanced and more gentle. It's not too strong. I can't discern whether I am smelling pipe smoke or cigar smoke (I am erring towards pipe smoke!) but it's there for me on the scent. It's a deal $$ IMO and absolutely delicious for me. Ardbeg has gone down a bit in the past couple of years and I miss the expressions of a few years ago but it's always welcome and is always on my bar and my husband's section the bar! Ardbeg v Lagavulin? I always come back to Lagavulin as a super core range of single malt scotch that I have to have but Ardbeg puts out some terrific heavily peated scotch and it will always be one of my favourites as well! Being in Canada I am used to much higher prices for alcohol as taxes are higher. I am happy to pay the prices for good quality whisky! I give this beauty a 3.5 but I wouldn't add water. Cheers!
When I have a peated whisky , my wife complaints that I smell like a bonfire! :-) I'm a real peathead, my first whisky was a peated one, and I loved it! Hope to taste the Octomore 1 day!
Nice review guys. It's hard not to like Uigeadail. Just a few things to add here. I'm pretty sure that Rachel Barrie was the master blender at Glenmorangie at the time that Ardbeg was bought by Glenmo in '97. She helped in the creation of Uigeadail back in 2003. In 2009 it won WOTY in The Whisky Bible. Mickey Heads said that Uigeadail is a vatting of oloroso casks and 1st & 2nd fill bourbon barrels done about 4-5 times a year. The ratio is 15-20% oloroso sherry wood in the vatting. Also, I think it's important to check the bottling date. The older bottling dates seem to be a little bit better than current ones. It's assumed that they were using much older casks back a few years ago. On a side note, you should get your hands on a 2020 Sanaig. It's better than the current Oogie imo....and more sherried. ABV is lower but it's cheaper :). Cheers fellas!
Just tried this for the very first time tonight, but wanted to see what you guys thought first before opening it. And to be clear, I have not tried any of the other Ardbegs yet. But this... this is sublime! And yeah, adding a little water to it just opens it up. This may very well be my new favorite. Also, just for kicks, I tried it in a whiskey coke with just a splash of Drambuie. Like I know it might be considered profane, but... try it. Oh my god, try it!
I bought a bottle of this last year for $68, and now that bottle is almost empty, but it costs about $80 to replace it. Same thing happened to Bowmore 12, (talk about a "peated sherry bomb"!) from $50 to $70 in less than a year. It's hard being a working class fan of peated whisky!
Yes, still on the shelves for the old price until new imports come in with much higher tariffs I think. They go for about 80 now by me but some old stock on shelves in the 60s
Get it while it lasts. I’ve seen certain bottles at half the price even compared to the big stores. But once that stock sells, it’s gone. At one place I’d seen two bottles of some 1st edition bookers bourbon in a wooden box, for two years or more, selling for $60. I find out it’s some collectible bourbon going for 4 to $600 online. I race to the store only to find that they were gone. Along with their stash of every other bargain priced collectible scotch on the shelf. Including 15yr HP for $50 and Laphroaig 18 at $75 , Discontinued elija Craig 10yr, older batches of Abunadh in the 40’s and many more. My guess a collector or another liquor store owner came in and emptied it out. Prob over a dozen top shelf bottles at really cheap prices. They did manage to leave behind 7 bottles of discontinued scapa 16 of which I bought two for $70 each. Moral of the story. Buy it when you see it.
Find this bottle to have changed significantly over the past few years. The whisky prior to the bottling change(around 2018) was much richer in sherry. By no means a batch snob as I rarely notice much of any difference between batches but have had a few bottles since the change and the current Uigeadail is a different beast. Much more peat dominant and feels younger. Hoping future years get better.
I was at a whiskey bar in Downtown San Diego when I was watching this review. You guys convinced me to order one while watching. Dobt regret it. It's a close second to Lagavulin 16 for me.
I bought my first Ardbeg today and it’s the Uigeadail. It’s amazing! I’m a huge Lagavulin 16 fan, I enjoy Laphroaig 10, and I still need to try Ardbeg 10. But this Ardbeg Uigeadail is superb.
I love Sherry and Laphroaig, and this Ardbeg is on my short list. I revisited a 2017 Lagavulin 12 and it buried the Leapfrog deep. So my minds thinks--try the Uigeadail or get the last Lag in the local shelf.
Ardbeg Uigeadail came out in 2003, first one I tried was 2005 and was amazing supposedly with a mix of older stuff. Newer stuff is still excellent. According to Mickey Heads, 1st fill and refill Bourbon and 15-20% Oloroso Sherry casks.
Definitely one of my favourite drams, always a bottle sitting in the kitchen. One of them whiskys that opens up with a few drops of water. I love the medicinal (TCP) tastes, slight smoke not as much as the 10 year old. But the sherry punch and super long finish. Slight grassy hay, sweet tobacco tastes going on. Great dram. Much love from Scotland ✌🥃
This is possibly my new favourite whiskey, luv how smooth it is at 54.2. Haven't tried it with water because I like it neat so much but will try a drop or 2 at some point just to see. Looking forward to trying the Corry some day!! Great review 👌🥃🥃
Just watched Drew's top 5 for 2020 and purchased this one! Really enjoyable and a nice change from Lag 16 and Laphroaig QC! $109 ouch, but worthy! Cheers
Picked up the Wee Beastie Thursday night, just on the neck pour, just seems like a young 10. Have some Ardbeg 10 to compare it with after the Wee Beastie has sat around for awhile.
I get a very salty Brine smell and a campfire and bacon or maybe ham I went from Johnny Walker Black label straight too ardbeg and all the taste it’s like honey cream delicious I love the stuff I am hooked lol Great review
Awesome re-review. This is one of my favorites and I love introducing people to it! But holy cow... $99? I don't even pay that for the Cory! I can walk out the door with the Oogie for around $72.50.

$65 around here. Been all over this for a while now. Took it to xmas dad said he got porta potty on the nose.🤣😂 I got it after he said it. This bottle is awesome.
I picked up this bottle today (Dec 31st 2020) for $84.99 at a tiny hole in the wall corner store in Michigan. Only one they had. It's quite tasty and this is the first time I've tried peated scotch. Definitely a punch in the face, but it's like being punched with a complex smoky vagina. I love it

So dumb when people want to believe they are tasting all of these other flavors in a given spirit. Plums, chocolate, coffee, cinnamon, peaches, dark cherries, watermelon, etc. I mean c’mon guys.
