Lyrics
Blank face in the windowpane
Made clear in seconds of light
Disappears and returns again
Counting hours, searchingthe night
Might be waiting for someone
Might be there for us to see
Might be in need of talking
Might be staring directly at me
Inside plays a lullaby
Slurred voice over children cries
On the inside
Haunting loneliness in the eye
Skin covering a secret scar
His hand is waving a goodbye
There's no response or action returned
There is deep prejudice in me
Outshines all reason inside
Given dreams all ridden with pain
And projected unto the last
The main riff is 100% emotion

When I first heard Damnation was a soft album I was like "lol that's kinda lame".
When I actually heard the album for the first time I realized that it wasn't a soft album technically. Like, it's soft sound wise, but the overall feel of it is just oppressively, but it's lyrically their heaviest. Like, it's the musical equivalent of a dying old man reflecting on his failures. This album alone made me love Opeth more than I already did.
This was my first contact with the whole band. I agree with the lyrics and beautiful compositions with a sound engineering that supports the lyrics. I think
mine as well! and now i prefer the "slowpeth" as my friend called it
Calling music "soft" is the biggest cancer of the metal head community. Hard/soft doesn't matter when the music is incredible.

this song kidnaps my soul away from my body and into an infinite space where nothing but emotion exist. No logic, No thinking, Just feeling. First time i listened to this song was 2010, never had a device since then where it wasn't downloaded. This isn't a song, It's a drug. Everything is so perfectly crafted, The instruments clash with each other with so much unison and coordination, and the voice of Mikael Åkerfeldt is so soothing and powerful at the same time, i can feel the words he is saying, and they're only heightened by the angelic melancholy of this beautiful symphony.
It is a shame. This song, it's quality. It feels like serious injustice that only a few millions have heard this song, It should be held at the same regard that genius musicians are. I will never stop listening to this song, it has captured my heart, and i feel it will only release it after another masterpiece like this comes out. IT... HAPPENs Forest Gump
@@ronkozlowski8169 Why do we have to lumped with the Gump? Live can come fast and hard, sometimes taking anyone of us off our game. This has been a back pocket album for me as well, but it's almost like hearing it again for the first time It's nearly as delicious now as when I bought the album 16 years ago. I'm so good with that. Reminds me, and wait for this, an album named Journey. Pre Steve Perry, when Neal Shon and Greg Rolie ran the band. They both came from Santana, not exactly a band of slouches in the early 70's. Sadly, they hired a, I don't want to be rude, but a chick pleaser to front the band. What happened to this album is exactly what happened to the following band for me.
Nazareth's Loud and Proud, an unbelievable album that for some unknown reason, went out of production for many years. I'd moved on from vinyl during the early 90's and I know, it was a huge mistake, But you could no longer buy it during that era. It contains the most amazing version of Bob Dylan's The Ballad of Hollis Brown, one of those super heavy bass driven tunes that make you try to destroy your car speakers. I'd never forgotten that one because I remembered I sold the record for around $65 after I left my last turntable behind, oh, that was pure regret. Most of my music had a copy of a cassette tape (You might have to look that up, I wouldn't know) but that isn't one of them and I missed it hard until a few years ago.
Anyhow, I'm glad I've been reminded of this, I'm sure there are many more albums I've forgotten about in my nearly 57 years. Someday, you get here too. You may not believe it's possible, but brother let me tell you, it's gonna get you wether you believe it or not. It's not a senior moment either, it's just life. If you've dealt with the shit that came at me, losing my father when he was 52, Mother shortly after, 2 divorces before I was 25 and numerous long term relationships till I found the right one 25 years ago, and her pain in the ass parents, living out of my car for more than a year in Buffalo, NY (winter sucked hard twice) because shit got BRUTAL due to my job being sent overseas several times and the death of my only child, it can be quite distracting when it comes to music.
This wasn't a top 10 band to me, but easily a top 25 to 30, and I consider my top 100 to be amazing. You just simply lose track some times.I truly hope none of the things that distracted me happen to you, that'd be fantastic, but rest assured, I didn't mention all that life had in store, not even close. But we perceiver and simply hope we don't forget about our favorite tunes. Be well Ron and rock on.

A fucking amazing song
I remember reading an interview with Mikael where he mentioned the lyrical inspiration for this song.
He was out partying with some friends one night, and on the way home at like 3 AM he happened to see an old man looking out from a window. Nothing else happened, but he started to imagine what that man's life might be like and wrote these lyrics. It's basically about loneliness and the many (often older) people society forgets about.
I always thought "Happiness is a warm gun" by The Beatles was the main inspiration. The guitar and vocals sound very much alike and there's even a reference to a windowpane in the Beatles song.
Gave me chills!
I woke up at 3am to a full moon and this song in my head last night. Havent' listened in 10+ years. Spooky
I've just been recommended to give this a listen. Love it; I'm hooked.
Easily one of the best songs ever written
Before Opeth I could not listen growling metal one bit. This kind of using of perfect harmonies with mixture of different kinds of emotions in music really caught me. And yes this album and this song was crucial for me to getting used to the band's style and then moving on to Blackwater park and Ghost reveries which became even a bigger favorite for me than this album. What a band, none other is good at this level of progressive metal which is not just bout rhytm but really getting the amount of depth to a one song.
