  • Needs a break-in period. Weber never should have changed the design of the airflow. Definitely has it's share of quirks and bugs, but for $51.00, it still gets the job done and should last if taken care of.

Thank you for the video. I can't really wrap my brain around the grill needs a break in period. For Myself.....I need to learn what to do and not do. I have a starting chimney....but I saw another guy use a torch..and light his in less than 1 minute. My point is merely.. there is a learning curve. I am a novice. The Smokey joe is my first charcoal grill.

I’ve got one. Set it up for 2 and cooking: Pile the coals on the side with the lid lock, open both side vents, lid over the indirect side. It can cook for hours like this at a cooler temp or sear the pants off a steak. It’s all in the fire configuration.

Top vent should never be totally closed unless you’re putting out the fire.

Nice review Dave! Just bought one but haven’t unboxed yet. Glad I watched this. I’m still going to do a review on it soon.
    Subbed, liked, and rang bell.
Cheers from Dave over at Dabomb Smokes🤘

Drill out vent fit butterfly nut and add heat shield material near handle... Took mine camping and seemed slow to cook first time...

A jumbo Joe charcoal barbecue 47cm is $229.00 her in NZ.
I had no problem with mine. I made a few changes.
I used two coal baskets so i could use indirect heating or intense heat for grill by moving baskets into the center.
As for the side vents, i could put the blower connector hose up to the vents and alternate. No problem.
Yes, the vent on top got stiff.
I got a tool and loosened the rivet .
My only problem was the ash.

I got the weber 57 master touch plus kettle
      $779.00 here in NZ.
      No complaints.
I got myself the best heat proof gloves out there.
No worries, absolutely no more fault finding

Our camp closed up and we ended up with two non-premium ones at home.
    Sooo, (-:
I cut the legs on one right where they begin to roll under. ~ Now I can either set it on the ground or on top of an old milk pail with top removed, latter of, putting the bottom vents over the hole in the milk pail.
~ It still gets plenty hot, ashes go in the pail and no bending over to ground.
Rare it is firing up a load of coals for 4 to 5 min steaks. Mostly chicken, burgers/brats...times of no breeze crack the lid some for more air.
~ Weber charcoal Go-Anywhere is a decent portable grill too for a few coins more.
~~ The bowl shape of Weber kettle types as a conical heater seems to direct its heat to itself/coals/wood as I see.
I even have a roadside grabbed 22" kettle, bowl shape buried in the yard to top of the bowl lip for bon fires/cooking any which way. From regular grate to sticks or tripod.
It just had bad legs, so I grabbed it.
Shape of is great for burning even stubborn moist-ish wood, in that sends heat to itself.
(lol, originally done for an out front bon fire as a warming spot for trick or treaters and parents, but the sun sets that side)
~ Decent size/heat output for a bon fire, at earth level to warm toes vs the 17" high store bought spaceships.
...tired, need to get to sleep and fire still going? Just slap the lid on and go in..vented or not. woot!
Please excuse my long-ish hillbilly experience with Weber stuffs.
    tips me hat ~

Got the old one, top and bottom vent. No problems at all. Amount of charcoal you use is the science.if you're direct grilling the old one rocks. Sometimes the Volkswagen is better to use than the Cadillac when grilling.

I used to have the basic smokey joe silver with bottom air vents and even that grill takes time to get used to. I now have the smokey joe gold like you and believe that Weber just remamed it premium. I have a completely different view of this grill and totally dig it in every way from the aspect of safety. Both grill are small and get hot. Being small easier to get bumped and fall over with hot coals so you need to be careful. Miss of the time I am right there in front of either grill attending to the grill or my beers. Once you are finished cooking the gold is easily and safely able to moved immediately after closing side vents and looking the lid down. The design not having any vents on bottom prevent hot coals dropping on to your feet or dry grass or flammables. To cook successfully on both grills coals must be very hot more so with gold than silver. The gold is more relegated to faster grilling and the silver can do a bit slower cooks. I only use my gold for travel so I don't know if I will ever get a silver again only because I have larger grills at home. I still very much believe that silver or gold are good but for saftey and travel without even cold coals getting all over your vehicle trunk makes the gold less messy to transport as no vent leakage of ash on bottom possible. I understand exactly everything you said and don't disagree much at all. I try to keep more minimal approach with charcoal and have to pack along chimney starter. I use the very tiny matchlight bag of Kingsford charcoal and use the big green egg fire starter cubes to get a fast hot fire. Otherwise its too much work to get it hot like a chimney starter does. If anyone tries to get coals going other methods they tend to face issues with airflow getting it hot. I love it for my needs.

I also recommend trying lump hardwood charcoal for quick cooks.

@@davec2470 interesting you bring up lump charcoal which is all I use in my big green eggs. Have thought about it recently and would need a chimney possibly. I probably give it a try at home to see how it works out at home.

Seems like a thin gasket with high temp silicone gasket maker would resolve the air leak issues new grills have. Seeing *especially* as how the food grate doesn’t fully extend to the inner rim, there’s some space there. I’m surprised you didn’t mention how there’s no DOME THERMOMETER, lol. I fitted my own Tel-Tru and it’s a little mobile beast. After bringing the Mini BGE around all the time, it’s a godsend to have a little throw around grill to travel with.

58 bucks eh not a bad price really. It might have Weber on the nameplate but made God knows where. Tbh all the bbqed I have owned I always modify it to my preference but that's just me. I have just acquired a go anywhere I have used it only once up to now. I actually dont see at the moment how it could be modified but watch this space.

I never used it with the cover because every time I did it put out the fire but that's because I now realized the bottom holes constantly got clogged. Leaving the cover off this way it worked fine but you never explained why it got hotter as you used it more. There must be an explanation but none was given except that it needs broken in. That's not an explanation on why it should get hotter as you use it more.

    • @davec2470
