Fiscally speaking, the loss of all those businesses translates into the loss of a sales tax base that ultimately erodes government's ability to provide services. These businesses are not offset by online sales taxes, they are plain fundamental losses equivalent to the destroying of the bottom of a food chain and you know that leads to economic death. Leo, FYI, the fire to this building at the corner of Geary Boulevard and Parker Avenue happened well before the pandemic, on Wednesday afternoon February 6, 2019. A clueless crew working for Verizon were digging beneath the Geary Blvd. street and accidentally struck a PG&E natural gas line, triggering the blast. The resulting fire consumed the building, including The Straits Chinese-Singaporean restaurant. The blast was so strong that it blew out the windows in the building across Parker Ave. Gas fueled the fire for an hour, because the PG&E crew, instead of using machinery, had to hand-dig the asphalt to safely locate the gas valves to be shut off. The trashed building has been derelict since that day. Presumably, Verizon (and PG&E?) put up a drawn-out legal fight, and apparently the landlord and business owners gave up. This closure is no fault of the merchant or of the local economy. This restaurant, former site of The Iron Platter, a much loved family-owned restaurant in the 1970s and 1980s, was doing fine before this tragedy. It's Big Business that is to blame for this particular, 5 year old blight in the Richmond District. BOYCOTT VERIZON.
Another great street report Leo. These entire closed areas are simply no longer for business risk or investment. Businesses who lost big are certainly not coming back to bad memories. It's clear when so many business side by side close, it is not good business environment. Burnt out property is condemned to no occupancy for long time. Why fix it and for who ? City council is so out of touch....good luck with that.

That restaurant building at the start of the video, was destroyed by a gas-main explosion, back in 2019. A ruptured gas line under the street, shot a flame 40 to 50 feet into the air. The intense heat from that gas flame set the restaurant building on fire.
Doesn't the lack of businesses to pay taxes, eventually cause the city government to have money problems? It is a growing cascade of closed businesses that ruin the people's chances to choose the products and services they want and need. How much farther do people have to travel to find "essential businesses"??
it's a downward spiral with no solution--rust belt cities already went through it... but even in cities that got destroyed 30+ years ago, the old crummy infrastructure is still rotting away. the people stuck living in the ruins just end up in little enclaves with the bare minimum businesses to supply what they want and need. Think about all those roads supporting those blocks of totally empty commercial buildings. millions of dollars per year to maintain just that infrastructure.
I’m so happy California looks like this!!!! This makes me SOOOOOO HAPPY!!!! 😃 Now dont you dare come to FLORIDA! Lucky for me California is sooooo far away! Sucks for Arizona that flipped to blue for life!
I cannot believe what SF is now. Same in Canada. Poor voting choices are the result of what we see today. I would be too concerned for my safety to visit SF now. Thanks for the video Leo. Good camera work.
The last time I visited SF with my family was in 2005. We stayed at the Bayshore hotel overlooking the SF International airport runways and the bay. It was beautiful with a confident feeling of safety. Not anymore these days. Too bad The citizens there chose to let the city decay like this. Shame and pity.
Seeing all these small businesses that people and families put their park and soul serving the community with being wiped out is absolutely heartbreaking. I can't help but be angry at the utter mismanagement of the pandemic that contributed so heavily to all of this. Shut down all the small businesses and keep the mega stores open, how did people not realize what being done?
People that think votes actually count are slow. Wake up. Political figures are puppets that are selected NOT elected. They are ALL blood related or part of secret societies.
The Richmond used to have so many great restaurants. It's sad It's been awhile since you've been to the East Bay. Maybe a revisit is in order. The closings are creeping out further and further into the suburbs. I'm seeing more and more small shops closing up here in San Rafael. No one's immune. It's the domino effect... Thanks, Leo! 👍👍
Once nobody needs/wants the urban infrastructure, it turns into a mega liability for a city really quickly... Not long until San Fran is Detroit west. There's neighborhoods/areas in Cleveland and other rust belt cities that are urban ruins decades after their destruction. The urbanist people who always want to build more expensive infrastructure need to explain plans for returning it all back to nature once it's used up and "gone now".
I remember going to SF for medical conventions in the 1990s and 2000s and the fun I used to have. Noted some incidents I had with street people. Now the conventions have bypassed SF, no hotels or shopping centers.
Omg that's my old neighborhood! The Russian Orthodox Church is beautiful. I shopped regularly at many of the places there including the Walgreens. Used to eat at the KFC and Five Happiness. I bought tires at that Firestone. So sad.

Wrong . Not in Texas. I live in north Dallas and every piece of dirt has a shopping center or they are building a shopping center . You get what you vote for .
Back when those stores and neighborhoods were thriving, Democrats told the public that things were terrible and that they needed to vote more Democrats into power to somehow improve things. I wonder how many people would like to return to those 'good old days' and start over.
I got to enjoy the last 2 decades of the SF Golden Era. It ended sometime around 1994. All the tech bro money that came next has made things worse for regular people.

How do you even convert a theater into housing? Slanted floors, giant open space, no windows. Sheesh
Oh yeah. That’s right after I pay back that money you loaned me.
Believe me those in charge have a plan, and I guarantee we the people won't like it very much.
When someone goes to sell their property,
they will be hit with higher taxes!
Or, have it taken by defaulting.
- They get paid and we get SOLD!
City makes most revenue from property taxes which don't go down right away. They also sell muni bonds to plug up their defecits
First step, stop voting Democrat. the proof is before your eyes.
it's a downward spiral with no solution--rust belt cities already went through it... but even in cities that got destroyed 30+ years ago, the old crummy infrastructure is still rotting away. the people stuck living in the ruins just end up in little enclaves with the bare minimum businesses to supply what they want and need. Think about all those roads supporting those blocks of totally empty commercial buildings. millions of dollars per year to maintain just that infrastructure.
I really like you and your videos. I look forward to them.
I appreciate that!
This used to be the Richmond district, Gone NOW!!!!! 😪
Let's go Brandon! You have done a great job!!
I’m so happy California looks like this!!!! This makes me SOOOOOO HAPPY!!!! 😃 Now dont you dare come to FLORIDA! Lucky for me California is sooooo far away! Sucks for Arizona that flipped to blue for life!
No way Arizona was red always what you mean blue now?
@@AlisaPowerDashaREDVVVBriga-e4v it’s a democrat state for life it’s never changing back to red
Now there’s a city for Palosi to be proud of.
I cannot believe what SF is now. Same in Canada. Poor voting choices are the result of what we see today. I would be too concerned for my safety to visit SF now. Thanks for the video Leo. Good camera work.
I some how believe it isn't the voters, more likely the vote counters.
FJB FJT!!!
This is what people want. If they didn’t then they wouldn’t vote the way they do. You get the government you deserve.
People that think votes actually count are slow. Wake up. Political figures are puppets that are selected NOT elected. They are ALL blood related or part of secret societies.
I enjoyed watching the pigeons in your movie because I love them... 😅
Me too. Their cooing is so soothing. I am not being ironic. I salute their love of life.
Now I know why newson has a budget problem. Business gone no taxes paid.
You crack me up man . Thanks for the walk about.
Any time!
You’re in the Richmond neighborhood. Loved that Burma Superstar restaurant. It’s been a long time since I’ve been to.
Me too. And the Shanghai Restaurant. Their Singapore noodles were the best
Looks like the last movie at that theatre was “Back to the Future II”. Playing now all over San Francisco. Gone Now!
Even poor ole Michael J Fox is gone now.
I love the suggestion to see Fisherman’s Wharf. We visited many years ago when SF was still a vibrant city. So sad to see this.
The Richmond used to have so many great restaurants. It's sad
It's been awhile since you've been to the East Bay. Maybe a revisit is in order. The closings are creeping out further and further into the suburbs. I'm seeing more and more small shops closing up here in San Rafael. No one's immune. It's the domino effect...
Thanks, Leo! 👍👍
I definitely want to go back to the East Bay and now that you mentioned San Rafael I’m going to swing by eventually ,thanks for the info.
@@LeoMetalTraveler San Rafael is in the North Bay Metal Leo.
Thriving business in plywood, security gates, iron window bars and NGO social services.
NARCAN sales are lucrative
Paint also
Drugs as well and weed shops are everywhere in San Francisco
Protect this man at all costs.
Perhaps making ready for those 15 min cities? Somebody will buy it up. They probably already have.
Nice job Nancy piglosi. She's a multimillionaire
I agree ..my late Dad said there should be term limits..and he served this country...drafted in 1955 same time as our beloved Elvis Presley 😺☘️😇💚
She is a US congressperson- not in the SF city government
Yeah too geedy to retire ...like normal people 🌻💚
Take your misogynistic comments elsewhere, bud.
Planned obsolescence of country. These images remind me of the movie Excape from New York.
they voted for it.....the shitty of no return......
Its not "crime" that these stores are closed.
@@tofuyam7361 but here’s the story of the day. No one really cares.
Yea crime is down because there is nothing left to steal from

I remember going to SF for medical conventions in the 1990s and 2000s and the fun I used to have. Noted some incidents I had with street people. Now the conventions have bypassed SF, no hotels or shopping centers.
Omg that's my old neighborhood! The Russian Orthodox Church is beautiful. I shopped regularly at many of the places there including the Walgreens. Used to eat at the KFC and Five Happiness. I bought tires at that Firestone. So sad.
@8:08 I saw a prophetic historical picture of the Alexandria Theatre. The film on the marquee : 'Fall of the Roman Empire'. They should put a big 'Jesus Is' over the 'Coming Soon 'sign. Thank you, Metal Leo.
In the 90's San Francisco was the place to be. So sad. I want to cry.
13:18 I changed the hours on that B of A a few times. There is an elevator to the right and a roof parking lot. Know it well.....They closed hundreds of branches in the last few years. Good bye Jobs. Great job......Most of the branches they closed were in CA.
Ex-26 yr resident of Portland, Oregon. Also lived previously in Richmond, CA. Got lots of stories to tell.
All across the country, "Gone Now" !
…and bring back the California State GOP ASAP!!!
I got to enjoy the last 2 decades of the SF Golden Era. It ended sometime around 1994. All the tech bro money that came next has made things worse for regular people.
Here's your sign. GONE!
Thanks governor
