he had the flu and another time a stomach virus and kept on driving. iron man of nascar. man i miss watching him race. once he retired nascar was never the same for me
My family “Garingers” grew up down the street from Ricky. His family owned a junkyard and he raced karts as kid funded by the family business. Dude was a bad bitch on a road course in a stock car and was better than most on short tracks and still above average on super speedways.
@@samdilworth1989 had his back blistered from hot water on his back another, he won that race at Martinsville (treated and interviewed by Dr Jerry Punch in victory lane). The Rooster was as tough as they come. He is one of the drivers that I think their talent is not matched by their stats. If he could have stayed with a good team, and not started his own team, yeah I think his numbers would have been better. Even running his own team for all those years he managed to keep his winning streak alive for all those years.
@@samdilworth1989 at least HE got to retire, my driver stopped driving instantly on lap 200 in the '01 Daytona 500.....Alot was never the same after that day.😔
Ryan Preece's flip tonight at Daytona reminded me of this, when the car went side over side, end over end, strikingly similar to this crash at the same track nearly 40 years ago
Yes he was....I was at this race and just hoping that he was alright. I remember he won a race at martinsville and the firewall got so hot it nearly burned his foot off. He endured that pain to not give up the lead and win the race.
This was the first big high speed flip/rollover that we had seen. Where everyone was going 200 in a pack. It was very scary to watch live in 84. Ricky was one tough customer for sure. He used scotch tape to hold his swollen eyelids open so he could drive in the 500.
@smackythefrog23 Darrell Waltrip was severly injured in the 1983 Daytona 500. He raced the following week in Richmond and to this day doesn't remember it. He began to come back around when they went to Rockingham. BTW, I wish they would put Rockingham back on the circuit, even if it is just for a Nationwide race.
I named my Mother Ricky Rudd. Reason being, I have been a fan of Rudd for years. I have seen him spin cars around and then jump out and run. When my Mom was 89 she wrecked her car beyond repair. She walked away with minor injuries. Then I said to her, You have Ricky Rudd your car. Then I explained who Ricky Rudd is. She is now 95, does not drive anymore, and laughed her butt off when the conversation comes up about her accident. We tease her by calling her Ricky Rudd.
Yeah, roof flaps would of helped greatly in this crash, but you also have to consider he went over some grass and access roads sideways. And if you think about it, it was actually great he flipped, because if he didnt, he would of more than likely sailed head on into the wall there right before pitroad
No Dale drove the 15 Wrangler car the two years before this but switched rides with Ricky Rudd starting in 1984. It's possible that someone mislabeled the clip you saw earlier.
Great video! I would love to see some more of the Busch Clashes from 1979 to like 1985. These races seem kinda lost to history. & the cars really do look cool back then!
I still cant believe Ricky came back and won a race after this crash with his eyes taped open cause they were still puffy and black. He was always tough and missed.
three observations. #1. The "emergency pickups" sure were "primitive" back than. LOL #2. If that wreck happened today, they may have red flagged it / at least closed pit road. #3. What took them so long after this incidence for them to finally install those flaps on top of the cars which helps prevent them from going airborne.
I was there for this wreck as well as Randy Lajoies! Sitting right where Rudd took flight.... looked like he was ten feet off the ground from where we were sitting! I'm pretty sure he suffered two black eyes that they taped opened for the 500, then I was at Richmond the following week when he won the race! Unbelievable!!
@e521soediv also, roof flaps didn't went into use -at least officially- until Daytona '94, when those racers were still old-school and had none of the things that are being taken for granted by the Formula Drift- and Japanese Super GT types, for example
I remember the late Benny Parsons saying that the Ford Thunderbirds of the early eighties were basically empty shoeboxes and the littlest of spins those cars would lift...amazing how Rudd had two poles the win at Richmond and his worst finish of 9th in the first seven races of 84'
@nascarjohnsonfan48 no, there was a mandatory safety meeting at talladega in 2000, where drivers were told that HANS devices were going to be initiated at daytona 2001 and mandatory by the end of 2001 season. Dale responded to that by saying there was no way he would wear one because it would break his neck. 6 months later, he was dead.
Actually, Bobby Allison's horrible crash during the Winston 500 was the reason NASCAR installed restrictor plates, to help the cars not to go over 200 MPH.
I saw that Jimmie Johnson did the exact same thing in the exact same place that Rudd did in the exact same place, but because of the flaps on Johnson's car, he did not flip end over end.
@ShyteKreek46 did Earnhardt leave RCR to drive for Bud Moore in the #15 wrangler jeans machine then swap with Ricky Rudd back to the #3 RCR car also sponsored by Wrangler??
especially since he was having vertigo and could not clearly see for several weeks after this crash. In an interview with Dale Jr they asked how he was able to drive and he said he would just watch the bumper of the car in front of him and follow it.
Notice in the closeup of his arm outside the car when flipping but got it back in a little while later. He suffered a couple black eyes and some rib injuries and went on to win the next weeks race.
Wild ride, i remember watching it on tv. Rudd's arm reminded me of the King's flip @ '70 Rebel 400 in Darlington. Thats when NASCAR mandated window nets, and they have improved over the years.
His face was swolen black and blue after that. I think he lied to NASCAR officials about this condition after that so he could keep on racing the next weekend. Tough S.O.B.
I was camped there that year in the grounds at the west end of the track, was my first Daytona drunkathon, damn 25 years ago, what the hell happened to all those years.
In some cases, like a car shooting straight to its right, more times than not, the car will roll over regardless of what you do. The way they have the cars set up, jack it to its right while its racing, and the weight of the one side of the car just rolls it. Jack it to the left, and sometimes, the roof flaps wont catch quick enough, or if it goes into the grass quick enough, the car will get air underneath it, and will go over.
@1nm1 Those flaps don't prevent the car from getting airborne, it only makes it reluctant to get airborne. Look at ryan newmans flips at talladega last year, and carl edwards flip. When you're going that fast, nothing can save your car from taking off like an airplane the forces are just too great and technology can not stop the laws of physics.
@dolphinmagic24fan ....not mentioning a couple broken ribs and punctured lung..... -actually, there's an interwiew in which Rudd itself admitted having lied to the track's medical board about his injuries, so he could race at the main event that particular sunday....and it's all here on YT-

There’d been a huge problem of cars flying twenty or more feet off the ground with the downsizing of the cars though Phil Finney In 1980, John Banks in 1976, and Terry Mock and Red Farmer in 1975 in the bigger cars also flew high off the track
November 1990. At this time there was no speed limit on pit road. Ricky Rudd roared into the pits on lap 300, lost control, spun 180 degrees and slammed broadside into Bill Elliott's parked car. The rear tire changer on Elliott's crew, Mike Rich, was caught and crushed between the two cars. Rich sadly died of cardiac arrest in an Atlanta hospital.,i might be wrong but this guy seems to be unable to control his car, thank god hes ok tho

It probably was Ricky's first race! I thought they switched for the beginning of 1984, and the Busch Clash is the first event of Speedweeks. Talk about a wild beginning.
@MrDontFuckAbout I think Dale started 1981 driving for JD Stacy after Rod Osterlund sold the #2 team and ended the season driving for Childress. Then he drove the #15 Wrangler Ford for Bud Moore in 1982 and 1983 while Ricky drove the #3 Piedmont Airlines Pontiac/Chevy for Childress. And finally, in 1984 they swapped rides and Wrangler sponsored both teams. *takes a breath* Confusing, isn't it?
"trouble ricky rudd slamming toward the wall crashing rolling over" god bless and come back to the booth ken squire we miss you and your dramatic voice
@Philip83151 and @ thrashmaniac99 Richard Petty never ran in the Busch Clash because he didn't carry sponsor Busch Beer's decals on his car, from a promise made to his mother about drinking. Thus he wasn't eligible for the race.
Even if the car had roof flaps, it still would've gotten airborne. As Rudd is sliding sideways, you can clearly see that the transition between the grass and the access road actually pops the front end of the car up, allowing air to get underneath and lift it. Flaps are not going to help at all in that situation. If the road was not there he most likely would not have flipped, but instead hit the wall very hard, which would have been much worse.
If you go back and watch the first replay you can see Ricky's arm was straight out the window due to the centrifical force. Ricky's lucky that he didn't lose his arm.
Weird fact : This was in the 1993 movie "Traces of Death" which I dont reccomend looking up unless you like watching real life deaths and stuff, it's pretty brutal
I wish for a comeback for Ricky every single year. Unfortunately, (or fortunately), he's one of those guys who seem to avoid the spotlight. I want him to come back as a road course ringer. And a question: Who is worse as a commentator? Richard or Kyle Petty?
The 2 black eyes come from the impact and his eyes trying to be forced out of his head. Don't take much to get black eyes. He can control his car. Has the record for most consecutive starts and most years in a row with at least 1 victory. He was tagged here and there was oil from a blown engine on pit road when he spun out in 1990. would have happened to anyone just terrible timing.
I have a friend who races sprint cars and back in the day he had a very nasty situation and I mean nasty love him to death but he was hard to look at it was like his eyes were bleeding from all the vessels that were broken and the swelling and bruising was disheartening had to sit out for a couple of weeks but got right back in it to tell you the truth I'm not sure that I could have done that
No roof flaps yet, they came 10yrs later. After 15 cars got airborne btwn the '91 and '93 seasons NASCAR assembled a group of engineers to fix the problem. Gary Nelson led the group that included Jack Rousch. They tethered a car on a flatbed backwards @ an airport and pointed a jet blast at it to see when it lifted up. From the data they gained, the roof-flaps were designed and approved by Ford n GM. NASCAR holds the patent on them, and they've used them ever since.

Gary Nelson led the group that included Jack Rousch. They tethered a car on a flatbed backwards @ an airport and pointed a jet blast at it to see when it lifted up. From the data they gained, the roof-flaps were designed and approved by Ford n GM.
NASCAR holds the patent on them, and they've used them ever since.
damn! What a hard flip. He lucky that he missed the wall.
