Please Learn From My Mistakes. Analyzing my March 31, 2023 Iowa Tornado Chase
When I posted the original video about my Iowa chase on March 31st, 2023, I expect to get a maximum of 2,000 views. I really wanted to make a breakdown of what happened to me, especially since I feel like I made some major mistakes, but I didnt want to put in the effort of making that video if the views it would get would be so low.
Well, over a million views on the video made me change my mind, and I want to go deeper into that day and explain why I felt like I was in a bad spot and also discuss what I could have done differently.
I am blown away by the reception of the past video and I cannot thank you all enough for your support.
I hope you enjoy this analysis of my chase, and I hope th...

How not to Chase a Violent Iowa Tornado. March 31, 2023
Просмотров 1,9 млнГод назад
If you are confused about the title of this video, I go into further detail with a full breakdown of what happened to me here: ruclips.net/video/EtXertYQl1A/видео.html Through a series of mistakes and bad luck, I was way too close for comfort on this violent Iowa tornado on March 31, 2023. For days leading up to March 31st, it was clear that there was potential for a larger scale severe weather...
Beautiful Large Tornado near Palmer, Iowa. April 12th, 2022.

April 12th, 2022 was originally going to be a classic southern plains dryline day, but capping concerns made the triple point in Iowa the safer play. This was the furthest north I had ever chased, but it turned out to be worth it. Special thanks to Glenn Johnston for helping me make and edit this video. twitter: @rockinatornado intsagram: @rockinatornado
Selden, KS Tornado 24 May, 2021

On May 24th, 2021, indecision nearly ruined my day, but some luck and boundary interactions lead to one the most memorable storm chases of my career. In this video, I tried to go more in depth into what I was thinking prior and during the event, so that hopefully anyone watching this can learn from what I did. Huge thanks to my friend Glenn Johnston for helping me create and edit this video.

To be honest, I had pretty low expectations this day, but it turned out to be the best chase of my life. I left home and got to Quanah, TX just as the storm started getting it's act together. I followed it south until it started showing a lot of rotation. I saw the first funnel it produced but was driving and wasn't able to film it. The video starts with the wall cloud as it passed over highway...
Real Time Footage of an Explosive Updraft near Sayre, OK 5/13/2020

This updraft occurred to our south as the storm moved closer to our position. I've never seen such upward velocity on an updraft before. It would later drop two inch hail on us.

Large Tornado Near Springer, OK 4/22/2020

Large tornado I observed near Springer, OK on April 22nd, 2020. I chased this cell from Healdton, OK to Lone Grove, Ardmore, then blasted north on I-35. This video was taken on State Highway 53, about a half mile east of the I-35 exit. In my six years of storm chasing, I can say, without a doubt this is the best tornado I have ever seen and this is the best chase of my career. This also marks t...

Severe Weather: How to Understand it and How to Prepare for the Storm

This was a presentation I gave to my office on April 1st, 2020. The purpose of this was to introduce those in my office who were no familiar with the severe weather in Oklahoma, why it happens, how to get information regarding future events, ways to get current information, how to use some tools for understanding the danger current weather presents, and how to protect yourselves in the event of...

Large Tornado Near Mangum, OK. May 20th, 2019
Просмотров 4125 лет назад
May 20th, 2019, High Risk Chase. While the apocalyptic tornado outbreak didn't occur, I chased this supercell as it crossed the Red River and got its act together near Gould, OK. I saw this large tornado near Mangum, OK. First part was taken on Highway 34 south of Mangum. Lost visibility and moved north. The terrain and chaser convergence was not friendly and it took a while to see it again. I ...
Wellington, Tx Harmon County, OK Rotating Wall Cloud and Small Tornado
Просмотров 4337 лет назад
Somewhere in Harmon County, OK looking west toward Wellington, TX on May 16th, 2017. The motion and inflow was insane on this storm. About 30 seconds in, I decided to use my car to brace my phone. A minute in, a small rope tornado develops just right of center frame. It only lasted a few seconds. I was sure this storm would drop a wedge in front of me, but the circulation became rain wrapped. I...
The Madness that was Charlotte Part 2

The craziness only intensifies in the final laps. Big wrecks, angry drivers, and a photo finish to top it off, Carl Edwards almost wrecked Dale Jarrett on the back straightaway. That is why the two traded blows. Kasey Kahne also cut a right front tire which destroyed his fender. Due to time constraints, I had to cut these out.

The 2005 Coca-cola 600 set a NASCAR record by having 22 cautions for 103 laps. This is part 1. I cut out the first caution when Martin Truex Jr. scrapped the wall in turn 1. He suffered no real damage and was able to continue.

I loves me a nice refreshing how I effed up really bad video. People who have the courage and take the time to display such blunders do a great service for anyone venturing into any type of dangerous waters. Such lessons help create more genral awareness and forethought as to what and how shit goes sideways. Peace man!
Bizarre. He never even gets close.
shudda got closer
Америка сдохнет ? мы нет мерзлота спасет планету,🤣🤣🤣🤣
I read this was an EF 3, but it looks like an EF5 beast to me.
I thought something terrible was gonna happen but it seemed alright. I personally wouldn’t do this because i’m a wuss but hey. 🤷🏻♂️
First 2;30 of the tornado - Blurry and unfocused AF, but after that some amazing footage.
As storm chasing goes it doesn't seem like you were too close. Reed Timmer does this stuff in rental cars all the time. I'm just glad you're not screaming at us the whole time. Thank you for your work.
Next time turn your wipers off occasionally...great Video though!!! ;-)
Not close at all, we all know storm chasers use extremely powerful telescopic zoom camera lenses which can record up to 10 miles away.
That thing is both beautiful and ugly at the same time.
I remember this very well Ricky looked like a tornado coming down pit road
You do not look genuinely sorry in your disclaimer. 😅
L
That was quite a day. 3 different tornadoes touched down within 5 NW, NE, and S of my house. Fortunately, they were all EF1
Wow. I don't know how Midwesterners deal with this. It's like if you live in this part of the country, you're automatically entered in the evil weather lottery: maybe it destroys your life, but maybe it doesn't. Every single year. Does everyone just get used to it?
Good for you for being responsible and adding your disclaimer so other people don’t kill themselves. However, I have the soul of a storm chaser too, and I would’ve been right there with you! This is awesome footage. I live in Illinois and whenever our sirens go off, I put the dogs in the basement and I go outside to see if I can see the tornado, lol! I’ve never seen one though.
That dude in Martinsburg and the guy to the south of it were in terrible spots too
I'm sure all storm chasers make some mistakes, and don't feel bad for being rewarded for uploading that video! Your ego took a hit doing that, but it was honest and constructive (especially for new storm-chasers) to learn from. I hope more chasers will post educational videos of their mistakes the way you did! I really want to get into storm chasing so for me, videos like this are a big part of that learning process!
You dint even understand the science of a tornado
*didn't
This would be like me born and raised in Florida going to Alaska and confronting a bear
Incredibly good luck. You are just not very smart
I've been called worse by better people
2:53 I love how there is a massive, deadly, monstrous beast of a tornado right in front of this man, and people are legit just walking around like your average day an nothing is different or out of the ordinary.
3:06 the old man did a better job lol my uncle used 2 tell me "tornadoes are like strippers, stare too long you bound 2 get sucked up"
I didnt see that you were that close, mabe im wrong, great video tho
Maybe y’all should learn from this lapse of judgment and stop this foolishness of attention seeking “look at what I did! pay attention to me-ism!”… Y’all are a gone adult, so get over yer self - huh?
Lol "I got way too close to this...." proceeds to get closer
Your disclaimer makes zero sense. What bad luck and poor decisions? That makes it sound like it almost took you out. Based on your video you were never in any danger. What bad luck? There are chasers that literally drive into tornadoes so I think youre fine. No overkill disclaimers are needed.
Nice, but find a way to mount the camera on the hood or something exterior. What's often happening is the camera is automatically focusing on the windshield with the storm itself being out of focus, but that's not always true during the chase. You found some very interesting footage.
A bit overdramatized with the safety at the beginning. You didn’t appear at risk and there wasn’t a close call with any large debris. Still, it’s a good idea to emphasize safety because there are plenty of stupid people out there that think it’s ok to get up close and personal with these monsters. For that, I thank you.
This is the most amazing video I've ever seen. The power and beauty of nature filmed in super high definition.
I lived in the bootheel territory of southeast Missouri, the area you did not go to. During my 12 years there, I went through 4 tornados 26:32 . As a result, I lived in terror beginning about April of every year. Before going to bed every night during that time of year, I would place my shoes just so right by my bed so that if a tornado came, I could get to our basement as quickly as possible. Much more is now known about how these storms work and I applaud you and your chaser friends as well as the scientists who are doing the work that helps us understand how these monsters work.
3:21 That's one HOT tornado. WOW!
“I got way too close to this” Proceeds to drive closer 😒🤦🏽♀️
Nice video capture 👌. That thing is a monster!
Bro your videos from 17 years ago got some views. Nascar was a helluva spectacle
Great video. No screaming and yelling. Stay safe
Great footage not to close you were in the right area just have to watch tracking.
The roar 😵💫
Thank you very much for your honesty and sharing. I live next to those railroad tracks in Jerome, Iowa which is southwest of you by 35 miles. and the trains can be very long. I appreciate your sharing of what you did wrong to those who chase and those who are interested in watching. Best to you and keep chasing. Your video was wonderful and your emotion insight was wonderful. We recently moved here from Florida but grew up here. We had more tornadoes there but they were wimpy little things that dropped into a yard, tore a lanai screen and the fell apart. The tornadoes here are long-track and violent. Our first act was to get a tornado shelter for our basement. We got a larger one so our neighbors and their dogs can join us. Anyway, thanks again and stay safe.
Yes, that’s a very stupid thing you did there. However, no price is too high for clicks.
Way to close? Everything you did looked fine to me. You gave the impression that you drove right into the Tornado. Looks to me like you handled everything calmly like you should.
bravo
I love how everybody is just SO CALM watching it. If I were within five miles of that thing, I'd be loading my drawers. :D
You call that close?
It's hard to believe this is only a day's drive from southern Manitoba, where I'm from. Manitoba can get some pretty severe thunderstorms and tornadoes too, but only during the summer months. It's unthinkable to imagine a tornado happening here while the trees are still bare and the grass is still brown!
I appreciate the fluffy sheep observer.
His name is Potato :D
@@JacobHernandez I love it!
Thank you for not screaming.
If you’re still alive you weren’t too close.
