Dale Jr's podcasts are outstanding, and this is a GREAT clip. Always a huge Rudd fan and the whole back story of his feud with Dale Sr. is put into great context here. It's also wonderful that they were able to patch things up before Dale's passing. God, racing was great back then!
It's fantastic to see Ricky Rudd again, thankyou for inviting him on. I always like how tough and respected how talented he was driving often times not top tier equipment. He's the original NASCAR Ironman in my book. I was really interested in hearing the stories he was telling in this episode. Life is too short to harbor grudges folks, talk about it, then move forward. Great video.
I was at that North Wilkesboro race in 1989. It was one of the craziest things I’ve ever seen. When Rudd and Earnhardt spun out, everybody in the stands went absolutely CRAZY. A lot of people cheered - Earnhardt fans got mad and went berserk. One of those moments in time I’ll never forget.
I live in Upstate New York. My dad has loved modified racing for most of his life and was huge Geoff Bodine fan going back to his days driving modifides. He wasn't overly fond of Earnhardt or Rudd either. I'll never forget watching that race with him and my sister and the three of us coming off the couch and jumping up and down as the last couple laps played out.
Me too friend. No more character anymore. Down home boys and simplicity is gone. That said. Rudd was a smart dude and smart driver. Race fans today are just video gamers. They dont get the beauty of the old school rivalry of love, hate and respect. It was special.
Ricky was one of the most fan friendly drivers I ever met. Ran into him at Patrick Ford in Fayetteville NC one day and happened to be wearing my DJ #88 QC Jacket and damned if he didn't offer to sign it for me. Tried getting him to trade me a race car for my 93 Cobra but he declined (politely I might add).

Ricky was my driver back in the day. Glad to see him interview, always seemed like a class act, great driver and a so-in-so you just didn't want to cross. Oh yeah jr. your okay too.
Always a huge Rudd fan and loved he owned his own team. A gentleman and a great shoe. Yeah Harvick needed his butt kicked a few times and Ricky was the right guy for the job. I am missing the old Nascar days.

My first NASCAR race was at Martinsville. Ricky Rudd won in the Tide car. The ambulance was waiting for him after the race. Hot temperature that day !! A few days later I was looking for a rim for my van. We ended up at Al Rudd's junkyard in Virginia by pure luck. His family greeted us & showed us around their shop. Ricky's family had a lot of class !! He is my all time favorite NASCAR driver. Thank you for being cool Ricky !!
Funny story, true story. 1989, 9 years old, first family vacation. Car broke down in MN and me and my dad fell in love with rudd and the tide car in the cozy rest motel over dq burgers and sundaes. One of my favorite memories.
@Thomas Miller that makes sense for me. Because it wasn't a few years later my old man started watching religiously and he was all for Brett and the quaker state car while I was rooting for rudd in the tide...but I had remembered the name rudd being talked about in the motel room. That actually straightened that all out for me. Thanks!

Junior seems like such a good dude. I can see everybody wanting to open up when they talk to him. I like him better than his old man. Dale Jarrett was my favorite driver
Ricky is the best ever to me. I was in the garages as a fan in the 90’s and hung out at his trailer. By far my favorite. I am lucky to have one of his race suits. I even drove at a local short track in Florida and painted my car like the Tide car and then like the Havoline car. I have so many pics and memories. This interview was awesome. Thanks.

Excellent interview. Junior, there is a gold mine of this stuff I'm just starting to tap into. So glad to hear these two worked things out. I most enjoyed at around 4:07, the tacit acknowledgement that if you were running good that day, Dale would spin you early so he wouldn't have to deal with you later. Yep. This is like that NASCAR legends tape when DW says anyone who Cale hit, raise your hands and everybody raised their hands
I was a nascar fan in the early 80s I lived in Pennsylvania so Watkins and Pocano were races closer to home I moved to Mooresville NC in 2002 and still followed Nascar but not like the old day's. One day I was at lake norman state park riding mountain bike and met up with Ricky. This was a real treat for me as I followed him back when he raced. We are the same age and we visited for awhile, he was real nice acted just like any normal guy up there riding. I moved back to PA in 2016 to retire, I miss running into these guys I used to follow. Living in Mooresville (Lake Norman) I'd run into drivers from time to time. Very cool memory.
When Rick Rudd won at Martinsville in 1998 in the Tide car he was absolutly drained and exhausted but kept on going to win the race. In pit lane they had to interview him lying down because he was so exhausted. I will never forget that. I think all Nascar fans that have watched the sport from when it was a southern sport wish it was like it was back then. There are so many things to complain about where do you even start. It’s a good thing we have RUclips so that you can watch old races and reminisce about the days of old. Because the good old days of Nascar are long long long gone....

That's something missing from today's NASCAR. There was a time when 500 mile races, or 500 laps on a short track, were endurance races for driver and equipment. That part of the sport is gone.
I was stationed at the Charleston Naval Station from 88-91. I went to every Cup race I could during this time period. My friend and I were at the 89 North Wilkesboro race where Dale and Ricky spun as Bodine drove underneath for the win. It was delayed a week due to Hurricane Hugo. The two cars parked on pit road in front of us. The crews went after each other and beer cans were raining down!! Someone even threw a beer during the race and it hit a windshield!! I wish that this track will get back on the schedule along with Rockingham. Great show, Jr!!
Good interview. Dale Sr was the best and rooted for Jonior his whole career. But am I the only one who find it difficult to deal with stammering, stumbling and mumbling?
Good story. Rudd was my favorite driver, primarily when he was sponsored by Tide. My dad was a P&G engineer, hence the connection. Met Rudd in Cincinnati one year. It was a highlight for me! Thanks for posting this Junior!
Such a great interview. My mom swears that "Ricky Rudd" was the first words i muttered as a child. Now that im in my mid 20s and getting back into nascar, this really answers my question of "what ever happened to him?".
Can't thank you enough Jr. for doing these Podcasts......it actually gives me a bit more insight and, to a certain degree, closure on a few events through the years.
Listening to dale jr talk to these old drivers about nascar of yesterday really makes you miss it and remember just how great it was. I don’t know what it is now but great it isn’t.
As a lifelong fan of the #28 Havoline car...I dealt with alot of heartache. When Ricky came to drive the #28 I was so excited. I had admired him before and since. Dude is a badass.
This was a great interview. RIP Dale Intimidator Earnhardt. Forever missed. I still can’t believe he died from that accident. I didn’t even believe it when I heard. How could that accident have killed him when so many horrible accidents didn’t
Man this interview makes me love Ricky Rudd! I grew up with him driving the 21, so I never really got to see or hear him that much groing up. Jr. always does a great job with these interviews.
Wow, I didn't know it was that bad between Dale and Ricky. I am so glad they patched things up. I was more of a Ricky fan than I was of Dale's. Great conversation.
One of the best. I love it when you these older guys who tell what I call war stories. I'm a 60 and it brings so many memories. I really hope you are able to get "Rooster" back on.
great interview, always loved Dale, meet him @ Charlotte, he was testing. he was the only team there, drove 20 yards from some guy kicked back in a longe chair, I walked up to him, & it was none other than DALE EARNHARDT . I was in awe ,as anybody could would . we sat there and talked about 20 minutes about nothing, while Richard Childress had his whole body underneath the hood working on car, WOW
These podcasts are awesome! Reminds me of the good ol’ days of NASCAR. When Davey Allison died,Ernie Irvin quit and Dale Sr. passed it took most of most interest away except for watching Dale Jr. I don’t much care for it anymore sadly.
when I really young, early 2000s late late 90s I was really into Nascar.. I played the videos games. But it wasnt anything serious..I just had a love for cars. I actually learned about nascar mostly was through the game I played on Ps4. I learned most rules, drivers and how to race different tracks through a video game. After a couple years I grew out of it. And havent turned back but Dale Jr's show has really remarked my interest..I love these little podcasts
we talked about fishing mainly , I was in Charlotte for a job interview,,he told me if I got the job to get in touch with him and we would go fishing . I got job , but never tried to get in contract with him, ( knew he was very busy) but followed his career every lap from 1987 till Daytona 01
I moved south in 1984. My first race around 86. I was a Rudd fan from the get. I lived in Chesapeake va. At that time. Never gave up on him. Great to see that he and I are now gray headed thanks Rickey
The Man The Myth The Legend, The Iron Man of Nascar, RICKY RUDD!!!. Man growing up Rudd was me and my Dads favorite race car driver. When Rudd retired I lost all interest in Nascar. Every Sunday use to be awesome knowing that we were going to get to watch Ricky Rudd race. Good times back then. I dont no if Rudd remembers but at Homestead during the meet and greets my dad was in line and saw Rudd walk out and Yelled God Dam its RICKY RUDD. He was so excited that when he shook Rudds hand he almost broke it haha. Rudd needs to come out of retirement for 1 more season. Come on RICKY RUDD give us 1 more year.
I remember when Kevin Harvick had it in his mind to scuffle with Ricky Rudd, and Rudd just stood there while everybody was keeping Harvick away. I'm certain that Harvicks face would have gone to bashing Ricky Rudd's fist.
Here is a video: ruclips.net/video/W2vzoH73Yow/видео.html I do not know, Harvick was a tough boy. But you can not be jumping on another drivers car, you can wreck them but stay off the hood. :) "Here we go!"
I remember the run in Ricky had with Harvick at Richmond and Harvick jumped on Rickys car.. Ricky's crew wouldn't let Ricky out of the car to get to Harvick.. Jimmy Spencer said that if Harvick had wanted to get his ass kicked that night, Rudd would have done it.
He has the “Days of Thunder” Rowdy Burns edginess and toughness to him. In the episode they also bring up 1984 at Daytona where he wrecks then races the 500 with tape to keep his swollen eyes open, he suffered a concussion that wreck and his arms were flailing out the window, unbelievable. A true NASCAR legend.
I would have loved to seen Ricky Rudd to have had more time in the #28 Texaco Havoline Ford. I know Ricky Rudd was a light years ahead of the field for a long time at the road courses before any other's got ahead on them. I was so glad to see Ricky win at the Brickyard as a owner/driver...
We were at Daytona for that wreck. My husband has some amazing pictures and he got Ricky to sign one of them.My husband was at the 1 st Daytona 500 and he’s gone every year for the last 50 years. We love you and your show, keep bringing the guys from the past back to let everyone know how great racing was then.

Jaime Deloach lol
Rudd was one of the greats like Mark Martin who never won a championship.
I met him twice and he was just awesome, thanks for coming, stood beside me for a photo, could not have been nicer unlike some other guys I met.
Those were the years when Rudd was around! Hearing where many of these guys got their start is fascinating.
Go Dawgs! Damn squib kick versus Georgia Tech. Go Hutson!
Can't thank you enough Jr. for doing these Podcasts......it actually gives me a bit more insight and, to a certain degree, closure on a few events through the years.
Love seeing the older racers talk about interactions with Dale Sr. Great show! Always liked Ricky Rudd. 👍
I have never really been into Nascar. I'm familiar enough with it but these old school guys from the 90s and back are just so fun to hear from.
I never get tired of hearing Dale Sr stories. I wasn't a fan of Rudd back in the day but I very much enjoyed his interview. Respect.
Listening to dale jr talk to these old drivers about nascar of yesterday really makes you miss it and remember just how great it was. I don’t know what it is now but great it isn’t.
Great to see Ricky Rudd again. Used to love watching him out on the track!
Haven’t watched a single NASCAR race since Dale passed away in 2001... I truly miss 90’s era NASCAR and it’s drivers - this show ROCKS!
@kingeris1657
That's what I thought too
"Oh that's not bad"
What I said
Sr. and Ricky battling for the win at Northwilkesboro......I'll never forget that.
The true golden age of NASCAR.
What a wonderful interview. Jr. and Rudd are great.
Man this interview makes me love Ricky Rudd! I grew up with him driving the 21, so I never really got to see or hear him that much groing up. Jr. always does a great job with these interviews.
Jr's Nascar show is the only one that really interests me anymore . I have been to oval tracks weekly and this is my 40th year ! Great job Jr !
Wow, I didn't know it was that bad between Dale and Ricky. I am so glad they patched things up. I was more of a Ricky fan than I was of Dale's. Great conversation.
Rudd was the only one that knew it.
Ricky Rudd in the #10 tide car was fun to watch.
One of the best. I love it when you these older guys who tell what I call war stories. I'm a 60 and it brings so many memories. I really hope you are able to get "Rooster" back on.
Been waiting for this! My all time favorite driver Ricky Rudd!
Wow, great stories I grew up watching him as a child. Dale Jr thanks for having him on and please bring him back if he can get back on. Thanks.
Ricky Rudd was always a force to be reckoned with on a flat greasy track, the road racing events, and at Dover.
damn that's why he was always in the detergent car
Man im hooked. Love your show. Jr keep up the. Great. Work
great interview, always loved Dale, meet him @ Charlotte, he was testing. he was the only team there, drove 20 yards from some guy kicked back in a longe chair, I walked up to him, & it was none other than DALE EARNHARDT .
Sooo proud to say I was a Rudd fan! All the way to the end! Definitely miss his no nonse style.
It sure is great to see all these old nascar drivers I use to watch back in the day. I visited Ricky's shop after he went out on his own.
we talked about fishing mainly , I was in Charlotte for a job interview,,he told me if I got the job to get in touch with him and we would go fishing . I got job , but never tried to get in contract with him, ( knew he was very busy) but followed his career every lap from 1987 till Daytona 01
Great to see Ricky Rudd again! Love these stories!
I moved south in 1984. My first race around 86. I was a Rudd fan from the get. I lived in Chesapeake va. At that time. Never gave up on him. Great to see that he and I are now gray headed thanks Rickey
The Rooster . NASCAR needs guy's like him now .
The nicest guy ever! Met him at Michigan when he drove the tide car
Man what this sport use to be!!
Agree, the day Dale died, nascar died.
I've watched this video 10 times. It's hard for me to believe Ricky has been retired so long. I loved the competitor that he was
I like how Dale Jr brings it to reality of what things were. Great podcast.
Come on RICKY RUDD give us 1 more year.
dude he's like 60
Me too my man. After 2007 I lost all interest in NASCAR for a while. No driver grabbed me like Rudd did. Now I'm a Logano fan. Team Penske
I know this is a few years old, but man, Ricky looks fit and healthy as heck. I'm sure he still does today.
My 3 yrs old daughters favorite, she called him Ricky Rug lol
Excellent episode JR! Thank you! Good to Ricky again.
This is Dales Best show, YET. This was as REAL as it got, between these 2 Racers.
I remember that and thought the same thing. Good to see The Rooster again.
yes sir i Harvick is punk
I remember Rudd running a race with both eyes taped open because of a crash the week before. Drivers were tougher back then for sure!
Man, when I was into NASCAR Ricky Rudd was my favorite. Tide cars was the coolest. Ricky sounds like a class act
Outstanding interviewing skills Dale Jr. Love watching all these. SUBSCRIBED
@@davidfletcher6089 he was very impressive as an owner driver, not many others were
Finished 7th in the 1984 Daytona 500 after the Busch Clash wreck. Goes to Richmond the week after Daytona with his eyes still taped and won the race.
Martinsville years ago, the pit crew ran a water hose down Rudd's back that had been laying in the SUN all day. Burnt the hell out of him. Still WON!
God bless Ricky - he didn’t have to spill his guts, but he did. Love all you guys do at Mo .
Hey JUNEBUG, You buddy are doing absolute Justice to the sport, you don't pull any punches Bo. And you listen to the whole story and don't take sides and call it like you see it and listen to the other folks on the show the other drivers the other team members crew chiefs owners I'm loving it man you doing a great job. Don't stop JR. You may save nascar, well hell we can dream! A.H.
This is awesome! I'm glad I found it. Wouldn't have noticed this one but it gave my tide car videos a little bump.
I really enjoy hearing from the older race car drivers, lot cooler stories and personalities too.
I was at Riverside, sitting at the "Kicker" ! My god I'm old!!
Another good interview. Thanks Dale
